Train to Hogwarts PV

*September 1st*

“Listen to your teachers!”, “Make friends!”, “But don’t be too friendly…,”, “Do you really get Owls?”,”I’ll buy her 3 toads!”, “Hush down give her some space.”, “Do you have to go?” her siblings and mother all chorused out various words of wisdom.

Her father silenced them and kneeled down. He said, “We love you, and will miss you. Give me a hug now, hun.”
Yolanda cried, she cried a lot, but not like this before, silently, not sobbing just silently. Her family surrounded her, then waved goodbye. She’d never been on a train yet alone away from her parents or her small little town...
She stumbled onto the train; kids zipping up and down. So many kids. More on the train than in her whole town probably!

*Yolanda ran into the first passenger carriage she saw, sat on a girl, introduced herself. When the girl stayed silent, Yolanda quickly coughed mumbled something about heading to a restroom and darted back out.*

The train was so busy! What was she going to do?

Breathe.

Yolanda regained her composer and decided to move on. Snapping her fingers she looked around a few passenger cars; peering in shamelessly, not quite understanding the etiquette of a First Year. In this new spot, surrounded by all these people, she was becoming nervous.

She didn’t know anyone.

She saw a boy trying to shove his huge luggage in a compartment alone… another bumping into people with his luggage, mumbling to himself. Another cart held 4 kids, all looking new, helping one of them get their heavy luggage up… Yolanda had a tiny luggage with only what was on the List in her things. She didn’t care about leaving her things behind; she cared that she had to leave her pet cat…

Carts full of friends, or new kids sitting alone. Who could she possibly talk with? Not someone in a cart of friends. Not a new kid with no choice but to say hi…

Gazing into another few carriages she started to panic!

She was alone.

Breathe.

Peering into more carts Yolanda saw two boys - a red haired boy and a black haired boy - should she talk to them? Probably not. She saw a cart with two girls laughing with a cute cat. Wish I had my cat with me…

Finally she saw a slightly older, Red-haired girl, sitting alone in her compartment. The girl had a quiet confidence about her. She was by herself but didn’t look lonely. Maybe she was someone friendly, someone who could say hi - or not - and someone who wouldn’t mind a stranger in her carriage… Yolanda got felt a sense of peace come over her.

Again – breathe.
Without considering any more she gave a short knock on the door, opened it and gave it a chance.

Hi, I’m Yolanda, I’m er- mind me sitting here?” Yolanda threw out a smile and tried to put on the same friendly and quiet confidence the red-haired girl had.
She could only hope things would start to look up.

Linda was thinking about summer. It was a nice time as usual and she was hoping that this year will prove to be good too. She was hoping to meet Rey, but was okay with not sitting with her now. After all they surely will find each other in Hogwarts.

As she heard someone opening door to her compartment, she looked at the girl who looked like she could be first year. Hi, I'm Linda. Yes,you can surely sit here. She replied with a warm smile and kind voice.

Her first time going to Hogwarts felt much different from what she felt now. She was excited, interested in which house she will be. Now she only hoped that this year will pass without any bad news. Although if Linda would be completely honest with herself, she still was looking forward to the fall ball. Time when she again could meet Quentin.

She smiled at the memory before deciding to give some more attention to Yolanda. Do you mind me asking if it's your first time going to Hogwarts? Linda asked curiously. She was wondering if the girl already had some knowledge about the school or she knew about it only from professor who delivers letters to muggleborns. However, this could wait.

"Hi Linda, I'm Yolanda and yes this is my first time on the train." Yolanda felt she must have had that 'new kid' look splayed all over her face. She wasn't great at hiding her emotions and most likely had a deer in the headlights stare.

Yolanda didn't want to admit this was her first time on ANY train - yet alone the Hogwarts train full of magic and wonder.

"So - er - are these chocolate frogs real? I mean - they're moving. Do they feel anything? Or make noises? Or are they sentient?" Yolanda paused in contemplation before realizing she was rambling a bit - she did that.

"Thank you so much for being so nice and greetingful." Yolanda said with her words jumbling about themselves. She did that too sometimes. Well, a lot of times...

"What year are you in? Do you come from a magic household? My parents are mug er...," Yolanda pulled out her notepad and pen. The one good thing about these odd looking robes she was wearing was they were full of useful pockets. "Muggles," she read from her notes. That's why she kept a notebook - to remember useful things. And other reasons. Yolanda smiled - proud of herself for her minimal magical knowledge.

"What are you looking forward to at the school this year?" Yolanda questioned sitting down and getting settled in.

Linda had a kindness about her and Yolanda was quite happy to have found this compartment.

This might be a good schoolyear after all.

Linda looked at Yolanda and smiled warmly. However next questions that came from the girl left her surprised. She never thought about all this, so she took a second before answering.

I am unsure what you mean by real, but they are just magical. They don't feel pain, don't make noises. I think it's just moving chocolate with a wizard card in it? Linda paused, unsure of what to say. It was intriguing how something, that she never had questions about, was causing someone so many questions.

Linda smiled again hearing next questions and small detail about Yolanda. I'm starting third year and I am from pureblood family, so fully magical. She replied softly. I'm looking forward to some new subjects, new spells and potions. Also I hope to spend more time with my friends and hopefully I can meet someone and talk to him about something. What about you? It must be all so new for you.

Linda asked curiously. I was always curious, how does it feel to know about magic and Hogwarts when you are not surrounded by magic daily? It was something that made her intrigued but so far she never asked it. Perhaps Yolanda would like to share this with her, although Linda didn't mind not getting the answer.
