Gem’s eyes followed James’ pointed finger, his eyes widening up a bit at the violent threat. It was funny, in a way, that a group of centaurs were focusing on a young boy that had done... wait, what had he done again? It didn’t matter, unless the centaurs were planning on a conspired murder of an eleven year old that happened to attend Hogwarts.

“It seems that they’re plannin’ the Great Fascist, Child-Hating Centaur War of 2019, all of these great big paintings against ya,” Gem laughed, sipping a bit of the milk he’d been given. He was originally going to get Logan that milk he’d asked for, but he beat him to it, resorting to instead smiling at him warmly, and a silent nod of thanks for the introduction he’d given prior to the ongoing conversation. He ended up looking down at the table for a moment after being slightly intimidated by the painting– not only that, but the way Logan’s face twisted in a threatening way that he couldn’t quite put his finger on... it was something in his eyes. He distracted himself by getting another spoonful of porridge in his mouth, which had thankfully cooled down by now.

He was in the midst of another bite of porridge when James had addressed him, unable to wipe the grin off his face at James’ grand introduction, clearing his throat and straightening up so he could give his own.
“Well, it seems you know me name already. I’m Gem, the great porridge warrior an’ mere servant of the Sausage King of Hogwarts, at yer service.” He bowed his head again, unable to keep himself from giggling under his breath, ruining his stupid little acting spiel. “I’m just Gem, from Sheffield. Obviously a Ravenclaw an’ proud, it’s good to meet you lot. That’s about all I can say fer now, but I’m excited ta get ta know you guys.” It was a lot more heartwarming than he’d originally expected, but it was better than giving them some awkward, tight-lipped lie about how he was determined to save the world— that seemed like too much work, and he needed his beauty sleep.

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

Taking a seat the boy introduced himself but before Lark could give an answer Logan gave it for her. Lark's mouth hung open for a moment before turning her head and giving a half smile to Gem.

Lost in thought Lark pushed around the cut up bits of waffle on her plate while the others were deep in conversation. They would have homework and classwork to do soon, something she was looking forward to. At least they all would have the same classes which was a relief. She thought of earlier sending their letters out and decided to write to her Gran later on. Lark knew if anyone in her family would answer her it would be her Gran.

Wait a minute...Sausage King?
That made her tune back in. Following the stares of the others she noticed the rather unpleasant looking Centaur. He really did mean business!

"Ye really did insult 'em didn't ye?" She gave a short laugh.

“It seems that they’re plannin’ the Great Fascist, Child-Hating Centaur War of 2019, all of these great big paintings against ya,”

Lark snorted into her goblet of juice in sending some up her nose. That would be something! Pushing aside her plate Lark grabbed at an orange from a bowl of fruit decorating the table. Peeling it she nodded at Gem.

"Well ye wont be short on laughs with this group. We're missing Clem but we were considering a quest ta the kitchen after classes if ye want ta come along."

Collecting the peels onto her half eaten plate she thought back to the shock of James at all the news of the magical world. She didnt want to seem forward but figured she may as well ask just so she didnt say it do anything to freak anyone out.

"Not te sound... rude but are ye from a wizarding family?"

Gem’s eyes seemed to sparkle a bit when he was invited to a bit of an adventure to the kitchen, grinning at the girl across him, nodding ecstatically.

“Yeh! Yeh, I’d love ta do tha’, we’ve got e’ same classes, so I’m sure we could joost meet up after class or sumfin.” He glanced over at James’ plate, sneakily reaching a hand over to steal a sausage off his plate, getting a hefty bite. He brushed some hair out of his face with his clean hand, peering at Lark peeling her orange, listening intently to her question.

“Mm-“ he lifted a finger, indicating he needed a second to answer, his mouth full. “No offense taken, mate. Yeh, I’m from a wizardin’ family, grew up around it a bit. Still, me dad and mum liked the muggle world more for wotever reason, so we joost stuck around there. Don’t mind it, though, Sheffield is a pretty place, consider it me home.” He finished his sausage up, only to fill his trap up with some more porridge straight afterwards.

He looked around a bit, noting in the back of his head that the centaur that had previously threatened James was gone, making him raise his eyebrows curiously. Where could that thing possibly have gone? It was a damn painting! God, to live in a world where your friends get threatened by canvases. Truly remarkable, he couldn’t comprehend it sometimes.

“Why? Are you muggle-born? Don’t mind if yeh are, people who do are rubbish as is, mostly Slytherins, as far as I’m concerned, but y’know... it could be anyone.” He sniffed, looking down with a frown when he noticed that his bowl was empty— it didn’t matter, he wasn’t hungry anymore anyways. “Do people still call other wizards... y’know,” he looked around, making sure a professor wasn’t nearby, leaning in closely, his voice reaching above a whisper. Mudbloods?” He knew that was a slur, his dad threw the word around like a ball, but his mum told him to never say it or else he’d get into big, big trouble. He wasn’t sure now was an exception, he never wanted to offend. Usually.

"Yeah, he really must've insulted them badly. But hey, I doubt the centaurs will be willing to take on four or five people at once, so if we stay in a group, James'll be protected and still able to rule over all the sausages." Logan chuckled.

"If James is the King of the Sausages, and Gem is the Warrior of Porridge, guess I'm the.. milky advisor? I don't know, not very good at that kind of thing..." Logan slightly sighed, before slightly perking up again, turning to look at Lark. "Hey, Lark, what are you?"

"So that's what you and Clem were whispering about." He commented. "If you're ok with me coming with, I'd like to as well. I'd love a chance to learn how to actually bake, I'm.. not very good at baking or cooking." Logan admitted sheepishly.

"Ah, Lark is a wizard-born, and I am. However, both James and Clem are muggle-borns." Logan smiled. "And yeah, that kinda thing really doesn't matter too much if you ask me, and since you asked, yes, I have heard people using that slur but I don't wish to hear it, so please don't mention that slur again, if that's ok." Logan added, slightly frowning at the mention of the term 'mudblood'.

Lark gave Gem a look of interest. The mention of their kitchen trip seemed to perk him up quite a bit. The expression on his face made the girl give a wide grin as well.

"Of course! If these two don't take off an' leave me behind again we can all head there from class." She paused for a second as Gem snagged a sausage. Letting him finish she continued her train of thought. "I wanted ta go ta the courtyard at some point too. Could be a good place ta explore." Honestly she had been wanting to go over some of the statues and architecture. She had been itching to draw lately but hadn't the time. Maybe today. Once Gem finished he explained his answer to her question.

"I wish my parents had let me know more 'bout Muggles.. they traveled quite a bit for their jobs at the Ministry but my Gran kept watch. She hardly let me go out ta town let alone be around other Muggle families.." The girl frowned. It seemed like everyone else already had a good grasp on Muggle culture. She felt rather left out but at least James and Clem could fill her in.

"Hey, Lark, what are you?" Logan asked.

She just gave a shrug unsure what sort of title she could have with the group.

Bringing up her conversation with Clem she gave Logan a quick look, her brows furrowed. That possibly of Clem baking had planned to be a surprise for James to cheer him up. 'Too late now I guess..' Pulling her heated gaze back to the table she felt her fingers clench into the fabric of her robes underneath the table. Where was this frustration coming from? Pent up energy over her parents? Maybe lack of sleep, either way it made her feel impatient.

Taking a second to collect herself she glanced to Gem as he asked about her own bloodline.

"I'm-" but Logan had already once again offered up Lark's reply to Gem. Putting her hands in her lap she took a breath, her fingers strumming against her leg. Was this typical of being around others? She never grew up with friends so perhaps it would be something she just needed to accept. Anxiously she continued to tap at her thigh. Her golden eyes bore a hole into the table as she tried to calm her nerves.

Mudbloods. The word made her nauseous.

"I've only heard it here an' there.. but I agree, an awful word." Her eyes fell on James wondering how he would react to this nasty term once explained.

James continued to work his way through his horde of sausages, making an exaggerated look of disbelief as Gem stole one from his plate, secretly very grateful.

His mouth was still full as the others planned a trip to the kitchens. He thought it sounded like fun but wondered if they even could

"Aren't the Kitchens out of bounds?" he said, his voice muffled through the sausage, "Like- it's a totally great idea, don't get me wrong but- can we even get in?"

As he heard the term mudblood he felt is blood go cold. He'd never come across the word before, but knowing that it pertained to him made him feel sick. He wondered if his muggle heritage was going to make life difficult for him at Hogwarts. He'd never experienced prejudice before, but he didn't like the feeling.

"That's- gross..." he said quietly, "Do lots of wizards feel that way about us? Like- is it going to be a thing I just have to deal with while I'm here? I don't know if I-" his voice trailed off more a moment and he stood up and then sat down again.

He wasn't really sure what to do with the new information, he felt like- taking it somewhere. Like he needed to dump it or just do something constructive with it. Instead, the truth of the matter just hung there in the air, stale and thick.

He knew for certain now, that some wizards would just hate him; hate him because of his mum and dad and he also suspected that there were a few wizards out there that would be willing to kill him for it....

Gem felt the heaviness of the topic weigh down on all of them as soon as the term left his mouth, putting him in an increasing state of guilt. He'd never seen someone's demeanor drop so quickly, all from a single word that held an unfair amount of power with it-- it disgusted him as much as anyone else, he couldn't even begin to imagine how that word had affected wizards. And to know that he'd never ever know what that felt like-- sure, he was grateful, but knowing that his friends would have to carry that around with them? It filled him with rage, contempt, an indescribable amount of emotions that all lead down the path of sadness. He would never know what that kind of prejudice would feel like, the most he could do was stay for support to his friends who would, and look down upon people who used it against them to try and keep themselves up.

Fucking cretins, he thought, his eyes training down on the table. He mustered up the courage to speak after something like that, hoping it would bring James up after he was brought down.

He reached over, putting a comforting hand on James' shoulder, smiling as tenderly as he could.
"Aye, man, I'm sorry for bringin' tha' word up," he apologized, the shame on his face making it abundantly clear he meant it. "Don' worry about it. You've got us on yer side, we'll protect you from those wank stains of wizards an' witches who think it's okay to call ya tha'." He hoped it was reassuring, making a promise as bold as that one. They could've gotten into a lot of trouble for starting up something if anyone ever messed with James in that light, (or in any light, for that matter) but it was a word he was willing to stick by for as long as he'd be able to think.

"Sorry-I'm-late-I-found-this-really-cool-hallway-and-while-it-didn't-really-go-anywhere-I-did-find-a-patio-garden-and-then-I-lost-track-of-time-because-y'know-plants! Sorry sorry sorry!" panted Clem as he plopped down at the Ravenclaw table. He really thought he had been just behind all of his friends as he left the Owlery, until suddenly he hadn't been. And then once he had realized how distracted he had gotten (really, was it his fault that there had been some gorgeous morning glories growing out there?), it was a mad scramble down the Great Hall. Honestly, he was relieved that he had still gotten there in time to eat anything

Looking around, he noted the dull quiet that hung in the air around the crowd of first years. "Sorry, I hope I wasn't interrupting anything?"  he asked as he pulled a plate towards him and started filling it with eggs and bacon. If pauses like this were going to be as common as they had been in the last 24 hours, he was going to have to stock a veritable pantry in his dorm somewhere, he realized. It wasn't a problem per se, but it was something he would have to consider.

Turning towards the first year that he hadn't met yet, he stuck out his hand "Hey! I don't think we've met yet. I'm Clem. Uh, Clem Larch."

"Yeah, we'll protect you. Plus, even if I wasn't trying to protect you, I would likely attack anyone using that slur anyway. I hate it when people are so rude and horrible to others, especially over things a person can't control, like who their parents are." Logan added, completely opposed to even a single mention of the slur. He was never going to say it, not even to tell a person about it. He had sworn this to himself, and he would swear that to others if need be.

He lightened up once Clem arrived, though. "Hi Clem! You're allowed to explore, although I may like to explore with you next time, just to make sure you don't get too carried away. Being late to lessons would be terrible, after all." Logan smiled. "You missed James talking about how all the centaur portraits want to declare war on him, though."

"No, you didn't interrupt anything important, we were just about to change topic anyway." Logan reassured, not wanting anyone else to tell Clem what they were talking about. It was bad enough that James knew how poorly muggle-borns were treated by the more elitist pure-bloods. He didn't want Clem to also have to know about that.

He also didn't want Clem to hear the slur. No way, he didn't want any muggle-borns to hear the slur if he could prevent it.

James smiled at the various gestures of support from his new friends.

"Thanks guys, I'm so glad I met you all" he beamed, "We'll look out for each other, yeah? I don't want to be this- sort of- fragile thing you've you all got protect. I'm happy to throw a couple of punches if anyone messes with you lot too. Or does that sound too much like a Gryffindor? I'll - uh- throw a book at them."

He started to laugh as he saw a small group of centaurs gather in a Landscape of a hilly countryside and begin firing arrows at him.

Clem finally joined them and he surveyed his friends, welling with pride - Hogwarts housed some excellent people, he knew that for certain.

"Welcome Clem!" he said, deepening his voice theatrically, "You are now in the majestic presence of the Sausage King of Hogwarts, please present your sausages in tithe to your benevolent leader."

"You missed James talking about how all the centaur portraits want to declare war on him, though."
Logan said, in response to Clem's request to be caught up.

James grinned sheepishly, and his cheeks went a slight tinge of pink, embarrassed that his temper had gotten the best of him.

"Yeah, I may have called one of the paintings a- uh- um - son of bitch, and long story short I'm the sworn enemy of all the Centaur paintings in Hogwarts."

He couldn't help but laugh a little at his own predicament.
