In all honesty, Lonnie was a little bit afraid of heights.

"Up! Up! Up!" She repeated sternly. Each time she said it she'd wince, turn away and close her eyes, secretly praying that the broom wouldn't come to her hands. Deep down, she really didn't want it to. Because if it did, she'd have to ride it. And then it would fly way too high because she was too stupid to control it. And then she'd lose control. And fall. And die.

"Up!" Still nothing. Lonnie looked around at her classmates. She swore only a minute ago, everybody was in the exact same position, hand reaching outward, repeating the same words as Lonnie. The courtyard filled with echoes of children's voices, all shouting: "Up! Up! Up!"

But now, it was just Lonnie. Everybody was either bragging to their friends that they could get the broom to come to them or even already hovering a few feet above the ground. Lonnie frowned, eyes shifting to her old, dusty broom. No way this was stable. If she even did get it up (which in itself was incredibly unlikely), she was going to die. She was going to die because she fell off a broom during her first day at Hogwarts.

She just had to stall a little bit longer. If class ended before she could get her broom to work, she wouldn't have to fly. And she'd survive. "Up, up, up," she kept muttering unenthusiastically. Bored, her eyes wandered, staring at the surrounding students. She didn't really know anybody yet. She wondered if she should try. She hated talking.

Then suddenly, the feeling of rough wood met her palm, and she subconsciously clutched her hand around the object as it hit her hand with a thump. "Oh no," she groaned, looking around to see if anybody noticed. Maybe she could get away with pretending she still couldn't do it.

Avis stood leaning slightly against her upside-down broom, the handle settling into the moist grass from this morning’s dew. Her eyes crossed slightly as she watched the bubble of Drooble’s gum grow out of her mouth until it popped with a soft smack. She chewed it back into a ball, lazily observing the students around her.

Today was the first day of flying class and Avis couldn’t help but feel a but confident as she’d been flying with her brother for years back home. This might be the one class she hadn’t been nervous about so far, but it was early in the first week. Hopefully there would be another class she wouldn’t be feeling butterflies over besides Flying.

As she observed her fellow students finishing up the task they’d assigned, Avis smiled to herself, satisfied with her ability to command her broom to her hand on her first attempt. Soon, the chorus of “ups” died away until only one student was left repeating the phrase to her broom. Avis cocked her head in curiosity at the girl to herself right. She was close enough that she could tell the fellow Ravenclaw was rather unenthusiastic about the whole thing. Avis couldn’t imagine why. Flying was her favorite thing in the world! How could anybody not be entirely overcome with excitement about the prospect?

Finally, it seemed as though the girl had given up as she glanced around at everyone else, but to her and Avis’ surprise, the splintery old school broom shot up into her palm as soon she stopped repeating the magical phrase. Avis stifled a giggle until to saw the look of slight panic on the girl’s face as she mumbled a quiet “oh no”.

Before she could look away, the girl glanced around and their eyes met. Avis offered her a sheepish smile.

Not a huge fan of flying I take it?” she whispered to the girl as the class was given their next instructions.
