lunchbreak
────────────────────────
The girl followed the mass of teenagers heading towards the Great Hall for lunch. A thin frame with long silver hair amongst the student body. Her sickly pale skin tone and grey eyes contrasted with the black of her uniform. Eyebags showed her lack of sleep and her face was emotionless, almost numb. She was walking without really thinking about where she was going. She just wanted this day to be over, and she had had interesting classes in the morning. Four hours of listening to teachers, taking notes that would be completed later in the evening, rolling her eyes each time someone interrupted the lesson with some dumb remark or question. And now it was lunchtime.
Anastasia found herself sitting at the edge of the Ravenclaw table, close to the exit, her leather satchel under the bench. In front of her was a plate waiting to be filled, but she could only think about her mother’s words during the break. It had been like this since she came back - she would sit in the Great Hall, stare at her plate and think. “Why didn't you get the maximum grade in all your exams and homework? And keep your back straight please.” Mathilda had said on Christmas Eve’s dinner. Since September, only three or four of her grades were the second best. During the rest of the break, her mother had criticised her studying techniques, her posture, some of her clothes... Basically everything she did.
But she already was in a bad place mentally, hiding the sadness due to her father’s mourning, blaming herself for her mother’s unhappiness and she was willing to do anything for Mathilda to be happy again. Even if it meant acting like the perfect daughter she knew she wasn’t. Having perfect grades, staying out of trouble was not enough - she also had to look perfect and go to those stupid balls Hogwarts organised twice a year. To be the perfect daughter, according to her mother, she had to study more, work more, always have the best grades. And if that could make her mother happier, Anastasia would do it without a doubt.
So, for the past few days they had all been back to school, she had been waking up early to review the day's lessons. Her lunches and dinners times were shortened so she could go to the library before her afternoon classes or curfew. After Christmas, her mother had her redoing the works she hadn't got perfect grades to. She read more, made flashcards, worked a lot on magic theory. With a sigh, she put some food on her plate, making a mental to-do list of the things she needed to do before going back to class.
