Slytherin vs Gryffindor: Match 1
NOTE: I just caught a slight edit in my last mod post. I took away 5% of the damage from the Confringo that hit Meenauh wrongfully, as she only has 2 strength. So she actually should have been hit for seven more points of damage. I have edited the Round 3 mod post to account for this.

Last round, the Gryffindors had begun to turn the tides, but Meenauh's shocking spell had taken a lot out of her, and the other Gryffindors as well - they had been caught in the crossfires too, after all. What would happen next might make them wonder if it had all been worth it.
The Slytherins had been affected sure, but they still knew that out of all the duelists in this duel, Meenauh had taken the most punishment of all of them. They MUST have known...and they were coming in for the kill.
This time it was Ruby who managed to trip Meenauh, using that devastating spell that made dodging near impossible while trying not to fall on your face. And in that moment, the other two snakes struck. A powerful blasting curse hit Meenauh head on! She would feel her energy slipping away, unable to stand up to much more of this, but only one thing would save her at the last moment. Astrea had also been readying a blasting curse in her direction, Jake could tell - because what ACTUALLY happened couldn't have been on purpose. The blasting curse went rogue, and barrelled straight towards Ruby! Perhaps Galton's fog had paid off after all, throwing her casting off. Ruby would jump out of the way of the errant spell but feel just a bit of its singe as she did.
With the dust settled, and most of the Slytherin team still in fog, the Gryffindors would have to work with the knowledge that one of their team-mates might just be on their last legs...

The only time she could recall where things had gone worse was the match that had left her with scarred with a lictenburg figure. And this wasn't much better. She had managed to buy the lions a moment of reprieve with a skillfully duplicated healing spell, but a in impulse of electricity coursed through her within seconds. Muscles seized, shooting pain monopolizing her thoughts for a few minutes. It was all she could do just to remain upright, and unless her senses betrayed her, the snakes weren't to blame. Apparently it would take her longer than average to come down from the temporary disability, no doubt impeded by the lingering dampness of the robe clinging uncomfortably to her form. Her chest heaved with the spike in adrenaline. She swallowed, glancing quickly to both of her teammates to take stock of the situation. The match might not have been over yet, but they had been put on their heels and not even a healthy dose of luck might be enough to turn this around.. Still. They weren't out. "..Not yet." |

Slytherin vs Gryffindor: Match 1
He’d seen it happen to others. In matches he’d moderated and matches he’d fought in. There were moments where it seemed as if a duelist’s (or the whole team) brain would skip a beat. They’d stand there, wand in hand, not casting. And in all of his time he’d never thought it would happen to him.
What foolish pride. It happened so fast. In a blink it was too late. They’d missed their casts. It was dumbfounding. How could he have missed such an opportunity?! As much as he wanted to lament on the shock of the situation he couldn’t let it happen again. “No, not yet.” He’d mumble in response to Evelynn.

After her plan to disarm Evelynn failed, she half-considered trying it again, hopefully without the shockwave this time, until Ruby incanted a Trip Jinx. That changed her strategy in a blink, moving her target from Evelynn to Meenauh and switching disarming for a small explosion. The Trip Jinx was a team play, ineffective if they didn't take advantage of it, and Bridget could see that Meenauh wasn't looking well. Which was a good thing for her in this context, on opposing sides of a duelling match. The blast was nothing personal.
The same curse was going rather haywire next to her, Bridget recoiling slightly from the heat off Astrea's mishandled targeting. Ruby avoided the worst of it; they could brush off the friendly fire, but it certainly wasn't something she wanted to repeat. She'd much rather lose to Gryffindor in a well-fought battle than to themselves.

Slytherin vs Gryffindor: Match 1
Twitching still with strange electricity and unused to the effects of such foreign magic, Astrea’s aim had never betrayed her quite as painfully as it did now. Her spellwork had been so severely jerked out of reach that, between the gritted incantation and sudden sharp intake of breath, it had instead veered completely towards Slytherin’s own territory. It was only due to skill and that her Confringo had been so easily dodged even amidst the fog, the splinters of its destruction still hot with regretful power. To make matters worse, her rare blunder had been ever starker with Gryffindor’s complete lack of action. There was no way to mistake it as anything other than what it was.
If Astrea were a kinder duellist, or perhaps just one one afflicted with a less severe personal code, she would have immediately admitted her remorse as it swept over her. Unfortunately, as it stood, the young heir was also as quietly prideful as any good pureblood. She could apologise to her slighted teammates after the duel, unwilling and therefore unable to reveal the crack in her stoic mask for the world to see. Thank the gods for the thinning but still existent fog. Burning with amended perfectionism, her non-dominant hand came to still the other. Down the barrel of her wand did she peer, grip tightened and seeking some opportunity at retribution.

The thing that rarely, or actually, never happened was the silence.
The problem was that she was hit so hard, it practically stole her breath totally. To the point, she was in the same position as if she'd be hit with a Petrificus. She just... couldn't cast. Her non-verbal, or wandless, wouldn't help. She just couldn't do a thing.
Even though she was barely breathing and really close to collapsing, she had to act. Another Confringo would just kill her where she was standing.

Ruby was not a big fan of the Fog Charm; she didn't like when her senses were impacted. At least this was just an official duel, though, and so the amount of actual harm that could be caused was likely pretty limited—there were rules and surely enough capable people were watching. She sent a Trip Jinx in Meenauh's direction, hoping it would land, and two calls of "Confringo" came from her teammates. Unfortunately, one of those, seemingly coming from Astrea's direction, was now headed at her, and while she managed to get out of the way even despite the fog, there was still the debris from the blast. Had this happened with pretty much any of her previous teammates, Ruby would've made an irritable or snide remark, but, well, this was Astrea. She could forgive this mistake as long as it didn't repeat itself.Doing as strategized

Meenauh was on her last legs, and everybody knew it. No matter how she tried to fight on, it was impossible to ignore the damage that she had taken this far. Perhaps that was why Meenauh valiantly put up a shield charm, ready to take the spells that were coming her way. Evelynn even tried to bolster her team-mate, casting a healing charm to give her just a bit more energy. But this time it wasn't going to work...because the Slytherins were ready for all of this.
Exploding firecrackers, EVERYWHERE! So much chaos on the platform that Jake had to cover his ears. The explosions were so persistent, so all-encompassing, that even Ruby took damage from her own explosions. But when the dust settled, Meenauh was down...her shield charm was overwhelmed, ready for a full-on assault but unable to protect her from the sides, where the Slytherins wisely struck. And not only had they gotten Meenauh, but Galton and Evelynn would feel the singes as well. Galton fought bravely, trying to stop the assault by attempting to tie up his opponents, but his spells missed in the chaos, and all he got for his troubles were a wind jinx to the face from Astrea. The Slytherins had gone with an all-out attack, one that not even the fearsome Gryffindor team could fight back from. Jake was in awe at the strength of the Slytherin assault, which had managed to stop any Gryffindor comeback in its tracks.
Jake held out his hands to stop things until Meenauh could be removed from the platform...the first duelist in this explosive battle had fallen. And now, if the lions had their work cut out for them before they certainly were going to now, both of them feeling their energy waning. They weren't out yet, not by a long-shot, but the Slytherins had so far taken full control of this duel.

Slytherin vs Gryffindor: Match 1

There was a point in the duel when there was no need to continue. Even Meenauh the Mighty knew this. Even though there was not a single duel in her career that she wouldn't fight until the very last breath.
When she heard the incantations from the rivalling girls, she knew her shield was in vain. She wanted to give a signal to her mates that it was over, that there would be no point. But she didn't manage to. She heard one explosion over another, and the start of her phrase drowned in the deafening noise from the crackers. And then the next moment was already in a blur as her mind put her to sleep. It was enough for the first duel of her last year.

Meenauh was the first to go down, which wasn't surprising with the way things were going. She even shielded at the right time, but the Slytherins had one more trick up their sleeves: Cracker Jinxes tended to go everywhere, including where you didn't want them to, such as back in Ruby's face, but also around the carefully constructed edges of a Protego. And that was enough to do it, to make this three versus three into a three versus two and a mental note for Bridget to visit Meenauh after this, unless of course she ended up in the Hospital Wing, too. It wasn't a concern on her radar right now, she felt fine, but Galton and Evelynn were powerful and skilled enough to still sour the morning for at least one of them.
