The History of a Hogwarts Goblin
This Solo follows through Ernest's upbringing and how he got where he is now.
Part one
Most history lessons always start with the birth of the person they are speaking about, that they were born to this family and had this upbringing. Either “Where did it go wrong?” or “Do you see why they did what they did?” This one will be a bit different. It is the story of Ernest Baird, and why he is. But first, we must start with Maria Drakes, and why she was the woman she is.
At this point, Maria Drakes is more of a story, as no one can find her, but she leaves behind many secrets. She was half-goblin and half Wizard; a pureblood mother and a goblin father. She was raised by her mother mostly, an illegitimate heir to a poor pureblood line. She didn’t know much about her parentage until she was Hogwarts age, and her mother warned her to be cautious of those who would see her difference. Maria could pass for a human, she was pale and short, but so many women were, so who would know?
She made it through her studies in peace before she met Octavius Baird when she was close to graduation. He was a nice wizard, kind and handsome. It wasn’t long before she was tempted and gave in to it. They were not meant to be though, on no, it was more the whims of hormones and new relationships. It was never supposed to be more. The Clark was born. Not his original name, no not to the Half Wizard, but she didn’t get a real say in that, as she put him in the care of others, as she couldn’t be the mother to such a thing, so small and innocent. She never did tell the child's father, though she did hope one day they would end up together, father and son.
She met her real father during her first pregnancy, more so for advice if the child resembled him more than she could pass as ‘funny genetics’. He was around to help her decide on what to do with her son, the first time, and he was around when she came back a year later with another baby in her arms.
Ernest was not like Clark, no, he was different. Clark had the cutest nose and beautiful blue eyes and looked human, completely that of his father. Ernest was born with tiny pointed ears that hung drooped as he cried, and pale skin with yellow that never left no matter how many days Maria took him for strolls. He was unmistakable for a half-breed baby. Maria couldn’t help but feel pity next to her adoration of this baby though, and she stayed long, even as she told herself she needed to go and let his baby have a life with someone who looked like him.
She stayed for a year and watched as Ernest became a bubbly child, running through the second-story house where her father lived. He was kept inside or within the garden at their home, never seen by the world, Maria didn’t want that. He was her beautiful little secret. She brought him to her father’s house only a handful of times during their year together. He was her secret to love, he was hers.
Ernest was…. “Mama?”
She didn’t know why she chose that night to leave, right after his first birthday. He had spotted her that night, she hoped he didn’t remember it though. Hoped he didn’t remember her. He was her secret, their time together was hers.

The History of a Hogwarts Goblin
Once upon a time, Ernest wasn't looking for him mom. Though the goblin boy didn't remember those days that much anymore. The feeling of someone missing so overpowering in him that he felt like there was never a day without that longing.Part Two
His mother was a small part of his life, but she was the most important to him. He would walk through the halls of Hogwarts, wondering if she ever did the same. What robes would she had worn? Green ones that the ones in his own closet, the very knowing snake crest that told everyone just how cunning he- they were. Or maybe, she would wear red, a deep color that would go well with her blonde hair, that would go well with the freedom she longed and the bravery of running to get it...
Maybe she-
Ernest would get lost in his ideas of her, he felt like his own Hogwarts experience was missing something without the account of hers. Reggie had slowly grew away from him, his bubbly friend being lost to the crowd of kids without ghosts hanging over them in the form of running mothers. Ernest barely noticed the space, his days filled now of Elisa, who was a spitfire. She was pureblood and perfect, and
Sometimes Ernest would glance too quickly about her face would look so much like one in the past. Her eyes tinted a different blue, her hair darker blonde. Then she would be her again, and Ernest would be looking for the pass in a girl would could have been his future... maybe
With Elisa, came Prat. He was the friend that Ernest needed. He always had him on his toes, chasing away old memories and longing with duels and snarky remarks, it was almost enough. Almost.
It was December 16th when he got the letter. He was about to go down to the Great Hall, the last in his dorm as he looked for his gloves so he wouldn't have blue hands with green skin. The owl came through the door with a squeak, having to fit in the narrow space that was closing as his roommate closed their dorm door to head up.
It was a snow white owl, a Hogwarts one, with a letter in his beak, not tied to his foot. Urgent letter, Ernest was quick to figure out. He couldn't figure out who would have anything urgent for him to know this late in the afternoon, so he took the letter with soft hands.
It was a quick read. The signature at the bottom read Maria Coleman nee Drake. His mother.

The History of a Hogwarts Goblin
The ticket was purchased quickly, too quickly. Really Ernest felt like time was going too slowly and too fast all at once. His mother wanted him, always did. She was just… She was human. Ernest could forgive her.Final
He packed quickly, his things from Octavius and from his grandfather being packed in a gray suitcase, his life fitting so well in the carry ons. The letter remained in his pocket a lot during that time, the fear it wasn’t really was there, almost always.
He wrote letters, for his friends and for the girl he thought he could have loved. He wrote many different ones; happy ones, remorseful ones, cold ones. He hoped the letters found them. He hoped they cared enough to send one back.
Ernest had sealed the letter quickly, a picture of the boys laughing sealed with it, a copy of said photograph nestled into Ernest bag earlier in the day. He sent this one first, late at night on the eve of his move. Elisa sent a couple hours later, when the sun threatened to come back all too soon.Dear Prat
It’s weird, writing a letter to you instead of just throwing the news at you in our dorm like it was another monotone topic. It’s going to be strange not having a pureblood brat taking up half the room with his ego.
Okay, maybe I can be more serious now. I will miss you, Prat. Even though our hangouts were in the hospital wing more than anywhere else socially, I think they were some of the best I had at that school. I will miss those moments, even if I don't miss how we got there.
I’m writing this because I have some of the best but worse news to share. My mom is back, I got the letter a couple weeks ago. I’m sorry I didn't tell you and Elisa sooner, that I didn't give you the time to miss me before I was gone but… I wanted some normal before I was gone. I will miss you all. I’m moving to America, my mom is there. She is married, and I have a little sister there too. I was sent a picture, she had pointed ears just like me!
Don’t let Elisa tear herself ragged for these classes, and don’t go mad trying to duel everyone in the school, I hope to come back one day to two of the most important people I know still being intact.
I will miss you, Prat. Thank you for being my friend. -
He didn’t slip a photo into her letter, no, he instead slipped a note with the address of his new home. Maybe…. Maybe one day. The letters arrived to the children by the time the sun had risen, though by then, the pointed-eared boy was already at the Porkey station, that would take him to his new home.Dear Elisa,
Don’t hate me. I know I should have said something sooner, that we have been together long enough that i should have read the letter with you, that I should have shared this with you when it happened but…
She’s my mom. I can’t let her go again. I hope you will understand, I hope we can still write letters when I’m gone. I will miss you.
I got the letter weeks ago, and she sounded so happy, knowing that I wanted her just as much as she wanted me. She’s married now, to a half blood in America, I have an Half sister now! She’s three, and she has the same ears as me. I get to be a big brother. I get to have the family i wanted.
I will miss you, though, everyday. I believe with time, we could have been the best of love stories, but I know that i wouldnt be happy without trying to have this family first.
Do take care of yourself, and don’t let Prat get himself hurt in his duelling.
I will miss you, Elisa.’
