Sandy was not a stranger to embarrassment, nor was she a stranger to being horribly, terribly shameful when it comes to her interests in genres.Guilty Pleasure
/guilt•y pleas•ure/
noun
something, such as a movie, television program, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.
Now, she wouldn't call herself a romance enjoyer, per say. Did she read it sometimes? Yes. Did she enjoy it? Yes. Would she stay awake at night sometimes just to read the latest romance book she snuck from the library back home? Yes- None of that was the point though. It was a light hobby, something she picked up and definitely did not hide from her family knowing they'd make fun of her till the day she died. People with light hobbies did that. She was sure there were people with worse light hobbies, like throwing rocks at ducks. Sandy didn't throw rocks at ducks. All she did was read books about two people falling in love, was that such a sin?
Tucked neatly in the small seating area, away from the threatening row of students who were studying or working near the other side of the main corridor, was Sandy. It was as though she was attempting to be as inconspicuous as possible, deliberately making herself smaller than usual to blend neatly into the large gathering of armchairs around her. While it wasn't quite a challenge to seem small, given the fact that she was a bit cursed with her height, there was a challenge not to be so anxious about reading a book.
It was stupid, wasn't it? To be embarrassed? Maybe she was overthinking it, but that feeling of shame deep in her gut drove her to feel a bit more gross than usual. It wasn't like other students didn't do the same thing... Everyone liked what they liked, and romance was a very common genre... But it was weird for her and only her to enjoy it. That was her standpoint.
"You're fine." Sandy whispered to herself, firm, "This is fine. Everyone reads, and this is no exception. You're just being weird, again."
Digging her fingers further against the hardcovered book, Sandy desperately attempted to keep her attention on the words. Reading was already a struggle for her on the daily basis, words flitting around the page and never quite clicking into place with the rest of the sentence. Her mind loved to wander, a creative spirit, as her mother would describe her. She didn't feel quite as creative as expressed, not with how agitating it was just trying to read a simple sentence without starting over five separate times. Another thing that wasn't normal about her to be added to the tally - Bullies 10, Sandy 0.
Eventually, she paused with a huff, dragging the book up to her face in order to hide in it. Her cheeks scorched with something of embarrassment, pressing the pages against her to soothe the painful heat that encroached on her personal facial property. Some words were mumbled into the paper, about how stupid this was, and that she'd never be in this library ever again if she could manage.
So help her god, if she had to do this once more, she was sure she'd drop to the floor like a moth after touching those moth traps.

And that's that lovin' sound.
───── Contrary to her outgoing and fitting for her physical appearance, Gekko loved the library. It was her go to when she was home and didn't have any friends, where she could stuff her face into a book and go off on adventures in her mind. Granted, it wasn't enough, and she'd much rather experience it herself, but it was good enough. Books also paid a huge role in prepping her for making friends, as it already proved it with her new owl friend Aodhan. The boy was a little odd, but the more she spoke to him, the more free she felt. It was like Pandora's box was opened and showed her that other people were like her. Plus, the boy had taught her a bunch of new words, and she was excited to send an owl back home and tell her parents all about the increase in her vocabulary.
Her hands dusted the various shelves of books as she walked through the library, humming softly to herself as she glanced around. It was pretty busy at this time of the day for some reason, maybe most kids didn't like studying in their dorms or just didn't like reading in comfort? Or they were stupid, it could be any reason honestly. No matter, more kids being here wouldn't mean much to the young witch regardless. Besides, her reason for being there in the first place seemed to be playing hard to get. She'd heard of Hogwart's library housing a book of comedy that was voted the best in ages, and she'd all but ran to the library to check it out in a rush. Unfortunately, when she'd asked the librarian about it, they just gave her an odd look, and she slightly deflated, realizing her obscure obsession wasn't as well known as she'd hoped. So now the young girl was looking through the shelves one by one, determined to find this book if it was the last thing she'd do.
The soft intensity of her musing and searching was interrupted by the sound of a frustrated huff, making her ears perk up. Most of the studying students were diligently quiet, and it almost seemed like any sound echoed in the area, but then again, she was pretty far away from the study area. So it had to have been just another student who also enjoyed reading for fun. An opportunity to make another friend presented itself, and Gekko slowly backed away from the bookshelf, the thought of talking with someone more important to her than a book she could find any other day. The time to make another acquaintance was always more fun. With a skip in her step, she'd left the middle of the shelves and out to the seating area, her head moving around to find the source of the earlier noise.
Almost as soon as the girl stepped out did she notice a young blonde with her face quite literally stuffed into a book. She seemed to be...mumbling? Cursing? Whatever she was doing to that poor book, she was sure it didn't deserve it. A small smile twitched onto her lips and she slowly tipped toed her way over to the girl, wanting to give her a small jump scare. Her hands slid over the blonde's shoulder, and her head peeked over to glance at the book in her hands. A romance novel? Cute. "I'm not sure what that book did, but I'm sure it doesn't deserve to be cursed at. Romance novels have a lot of misunderstanding themes, but don't worry, they usually resolve pretty fast. Or slow, if the author is an idiot."

Fear, the root of all love. Unfortunately for her, and any dreams of a lovely romance, this fear was just fear, not love. Pressure, light and relaxed, pressed against her shoulders, followed by a voice. Sandy adored conversation when it was wanted, which was every time but now. Unlike her brother, she actually liked human communication! Except human communication only seemed to like her when it had a chance to embarrass her. She wondered why that was.
Jolting the book away from her, a quick slam of the pages sounding close after, she rested it on her lap. She was distantly aware to cover the title with her hands as she shrunk away from the touch, "Nothing! It did nothing, I just... Happened to be reading it. Terrible pick, really. I mean- Psh, who would even read this stuff anyways! It's gross!"
Slowly, she shifted the book away and onto the ground. With this freedom of her hands, she used it to scratch at her wrist before taking her glasses off, clumsily cleaning them with her shirt, "...Surely you, um, had better things to do than to watch over me doing a little bit of joke-reading... You- You weren't there for long, right? I mean, not that I'm assuming you were, unless you're some stalker from those weird romance books, but-... Well, I'd kinda hope you aren't."
Sandy, with the chime of death and a hole metaphorically opening right in front of her, felt that it was time to shut up. Permanently, she'd prefer. How many times had she done this? Embarrassed herself to no return? She'd need to start a tally, honestly. Lord knew her family would have a field day with this information. The beloved little girl of the family, lost to her own stupidity. Title for the ages.
Tilting her head away at an awkward angle, Sandy caught a partial glance of the person. A girl, still obviously young. Black hair - Cared for awfully well, may she add! Sandy took note to ask for her hair routine - cut to a shorter length. She was pretty, from the very minimal knowledge Sandy had of her, but Sandy thought all girls were pretty. It was just- A teeny problem that this girl was so close to her. Way too close. Maybe she was overreacting, that this space amount was normal, but it was seriously making it hard to properly think. Not that she had troubles thinking, of course! She had a good head on her shoulders, according to her momma! But, well, it seemed like as of recent, any voice of reason was really lacking. Maybe that weird voice went on strike, who knows. She'd go on strike too if she had to keep telling stupid people to not do things all the time.
Now, don't get her wrong. She wasn't saying she didn't entirely mind the lack of space right about now, but she assumed it'd be a little bit more comfortable if whoever this was maybe just... Didn't stand behind her when she was just relaxing in a chair. In front, sure, but she couldn't quite imagine a way to do that without it being intimidating. Actually, she couldn't really think of a way for this to be comfortable at all...
...
She stopped thinking about how she could get this stranger to be closer to her.
Tilting her head forward slightly, Sandy put her glasses back on, awkwardly adjusting them and scratching at the bridge of her nose for a moment before dropping her hands to rest on her lap, clasped together. Sweaty, a little bit rougher than she'd like them to be, too tense. Ugh, so much to work on. Why did body autonomy exist? Why couldn't she just be words on a paper that wasn't entirely cohesive enough to read? Why did people, pretty people, have to come up to her and interact with her?

And that's that lovin' sound.
───── Gekko had many flaws in how she handled things when it came to other people, all of which were due to her lack of proper age interactions with kids her age growing up. Perhaps that's why her friends often called her touchy. But it wasn't like she could handle it, this was how she was raised, in a household full of constant touch. This too was a form of communication.
With her arms wrapped around the blonde's shoulders, Gekko leaned down and rest her chin on said shoulder. She had to bite back a small laugh of amusement at the sight of the book being not so discreetly pushed to the floor, her eyes sparkling with mirth. Was she embarrassed at being caught reading, or was it just because the book was romance, of all things? That was absurd, no one would realistically care that much about the contents as long as the book is good. This is from the girl who relies on joke books for comfort, so of course she'd never judge someone for what they read.
"There's really nothing to be embarrassed about." Her words were soft and quiet, glancing up in the direction of the librarian before finally pulling herself away from the other girl. The young witch moved to instead stand next to her, picking up the discarded as she did so. "Unfortunately, I am not your romantic stalker. I just like interesting things." The girl hummed as she turned the book over, reading the synopsis with a ghost of a smile threatening to quirk up on her face. A stalker romance, huh? At this age? Maybe she'd gotten the girl's hopes up, but the mental image of herself stalking someone was so prosperous that Gekko nearly laughed. She'd managed to stop herself with a quiet cough, setting the book on the table instead.
Without much consideration for boundaries, she honestly never thought about them in the first place, the young girl took the seat next to the blonde and turned to her with a tilt of her head. "Are you embarrassed about reading romance books? Or is it just when they're a little...abnormal?" She really had to hold back a laugh at that, it was rude to laugh in people's faces about their interests, even if it was only in teasing. With a soft touch on her hair, she tried to give the girl a look of comfort and ease. She wasn't judging her interest honestly, all books were good in her opinion, even if some were in odd taste. But her overdramatic reaction really didn't help, and it reminded her of the neighbor cat that roamed the streets acting hurt for attention.

Sandy was overheating. With such sudden, absurd amounts of touch, she felt almost overwhelmed. Of course, it was embarrassing to be caught reading such a ridiculous book (though it did make her blush a bit. Maybe she should be concerned about that), but Sandy would've never expected to feel such a sheer amount of warmth, especially one that seemed to amp up at the other girl's touch. It was obscenely scary, and she really didn't know how to feel over it. Truth be told, cross her heart and hope to die, she wasn't entirely sure that the anxiety of being caught was the whole reason her heart was racing.
"Aha... Yeah, yeah. Nothing to be embarrassed about." Sandy choked out, forcing the words through a closed throat. She watched as the book was picked up, eyes skimming over the back with an amused expression on the other's face. Only then did she really feel like allowing the earth to swallow her whole, put her out of her misery and pretend she never existed on this cruel plane of land in the first place. Nobody would miss her. Nobody would remember her as that girl who was reading a stalker romance at a ripe age of - Well, too young for those books.
She had half a mind to speak up, fumble for an explanation. The book was just interesting, she argued in her head, a compelling plotline she hadn't explored yet... And really, obsession was always a bit attractive in her mind.
What, who said that? Such a weird thing to think... So glad it wasn't her thinking that! Sure would be a problem if it was, right anonymous voice in the back of her head?
Sandy stayed quiet, flushed cheeks prominent against her tan skin, no matter her poor subtle hiding skills with her hands. She was hardly covered, instead just rather seeming like she was resting her head on her palms. Thankfully, she wouldn't have to explain that she was too embarrassed to the point of hiding herself, but that also meant she'd have to explain the fact that she was blushing over an obsessive stalker, which seemed equally worse. Don't get her wrong, an actual stalker? Totally disgusting, but a fictional one who would never potentially harm her? She could get behind that.
Tapping a finger against her cheek, Sandy debated the question, bottom lip taken between teeth as she thought about it, "Okay... It's not- Well..." Almost instantly, her answer was thrown off, deliberately fucked up by the comforting look of the other girl. If not enough for her body, her heart seemed to pick up further, a painful thrumming in her ears as she fumbled for words once more. She quickly turned her gaze away, choosing to examine the floor instead.
"It's just interesting. You- You'd be embarrassed to read a topic like that too! Like, I don't usually read these things... But the plot seemed cool to me. Usually it's all, like, weird romanticizing stalkers and finding them sexy, y'know, all that and a bit more. This one just made it seem more- Dunno, realistic. Scary. Yeah they still get together in the end, or, er, I assume, but she's scared and he knows that, I guess."
Taking a deep breath, Sandy mustered up the confidence to give a small shrug, finalizing her thoughts. That seemed normal enough, right? Pretend she was interested in the horror, rather than the romance? Yeah, people did that. Totally normal. Easy win.
