Slipping Some Facts with @Scout Fu-Hai

Emily was well aware of the reaction she could've expected from Scout just by uttering Casey's name alone; a look of pure confusion and dare she say repulsion. After all they've been through, she couldn't think of a good reason why she wouldn't, though Emily was also aware that Scout wasn't quite up to date of their frequent communication with each other.
"I-I'm not saying you need to apologise first or anything. I just think it would be nice to see you two finally get along. I mean... You both seemed to feel pretty bad after what happened at camp... So maybe you guys could... You know..."
Emily didn't quite know how to approach Scout given her contempt for the Ilvermorny boy. Well, she had calmed down since the "incident" but the waters weren't clear for them to be buddy-buddy just yet. She could read Scout when it came to a lot of things - as could Scout with Emily - but Casey was always someone she couldn't tell where Scout stood. People weren't far off the mark when they say, "Hate blinds you."
"Try not to hold it against him. Casey's not a bad guy, he's just... Well..."
See, this was what was going to be hard to explain to Scout. Casey never really had a bad bone in his body. Not inherently anyway. He was just frustrated deep down, for a lot of things. Things that Scout wasn't in the know-how about. Even if Scout found it to be a good reason, there was probably no excuse for his behaviour in the first place in her eyes.
"Well... I don't know how much I should say since this is more Casey's business than it is mine... But he's had it rough for a while. Thing is, I don't know if we're really close enough to be friends, or if it's just worked out because we... Um..."
Emily was worried for when she would eventually have to talk about this with Scout. There was more for Scout to get angsty with Emily for talking with the boy that was relentlessly angsty back at them for a while.
"Near the end of camp, he and I... Actually met up. We started talking things out and... It just kind of worked out, I guess. He apologised for what he did and we actually... Bonded. I told him about me, he told me about himself... And it turns out his older brother is missing. So I guess he's been grieving over the fact that he's been gone and the fear of him possibly being... Well, you know..."
Emily fidgeted slightly before continuing. "I never really told you before because I didn't want you to think I was "fraternising with the enemy" or something and upset you. The point is, Casey needed someone after feeling like the world was against him for so long. Whether we're actually friends, or if he's letting me help him for convenience, I don't really mind... It just relieves me to see him loosening up a bit and getting used to people being in his life again. And it looks like it's doing him the world of good, just going by the fact that he reads and responds to my letters."
It was something to talk about with him when he'd arrive at Hogwarts the following week or so for the Autumn Ball. Emily was certain they were friends but she knew Casey's resolve to find Nick would always come first, regardless how it would end. Perhaps that's why she suddenly felt nervous when she contradicted herself in that moment. For all she knew, Casey was only in contact looking for aid in finding Nick - that was how they even started the chain mail between them in the first place.
Emily wanted friendship, Casey wanted answers. Was it true, or wasn't it?
Emily cast her glance to her knees. She wasn't omniscient but she hated being unsure.

Even if she didn't succeed, Scout knew her friend would stop nothing at trying, even when she needed to stop. A part of Scout wanted to be upset at Emily, just a little. She beat him up for being an ass to Em, dealt with the soul-crushing hatred of herself for doing so for Emily. But she wasn't that stupid, you can't stay mad at someone forever. Well, Scout probably could, but Emily definitely couldn't!
"He only felt bad 'cause he got his ass beat by a girl." She huffed matter-of-factly, rolling her eyes. Even with the story of his missing brother, Scout was having a real hard time feeling empathetic to him, even if she did really want to. Every time she'd feel bad, she'd swear she could see a flash of Emily's face after everything went down and suddenly her sympathy would drop to dangerously low levels. "I'll think about it, I guess."
She needed to get over herself first, though. What kind of ultimate Gryffindor hero could she be if she got as emotional as she did today? How could she let the wall she had carefully crafted break down, especially in front of Emily? This switch from red-hot anger to ice-cold misery wasn't going to help anyone's situation, much less hers. Right, that was it. Today would be the last day she ever thought about herself being a monster, or even contemplated the way others looked at her. No more red notebooks, no more red anything.
If the only way to hide from herself was to dig a deeper hole, then she might as well bring a shovel.
"Em... it's fine, honestly. You don't need to explain yourself." She sighed. "I'm sure everything will be fine. Maybe we can just talk at the Gala or something." Ugh, this felt horrible. For some reason, the pushing of the conversation felt more difficult than before, made her face contort into a grimace rather than the smile that came naturally. God, what was she doing wrong? Maybe it was because she had been so vulnerable before, pushing away the honesty was more difficult. Whatever.
"Listen, um, let's just go to the Great Hall or something, I'm kind of hungry." Oh wait, dinner wasn't for a little while... "Wait... sorry, the kitchen. We can sneak in there if we're peckish, right?"
don't look at me; you can't understand, right? i'm just like a monstrous flower that bloomed too soon

Dinner Time with @Scout Fu-Hai

A huff of laughter escaped Emily after hearing Scout's remark. She was a tough cookie, always had been. It wasn't like Emily really needed to be reminded but she would never steal Scout's thunder. "You were pretty feisty back there, Scoutie...!" Emily gave her an affirmative shoulder pat. If there's one thing Scout should at least be proud of herself for, was her unbreakable backbone.
As shown when she said she'd "think about" an apology with the boy that was admittedly a little bit of a jerk. Emily snugged her buddy, feeling proud of her. "Atta girl, Scout! You'd be doing the honourable thing...!" Scout could be stubborn at times but Emily always knew she could listen to some form of reason. Maybe it did her a service that Scout held her ears open a little longer for Emily whenever she needed guidance.
It certainly seemed to be the case when Scout listened enough to trust Emily that she held no ill intention behind making amends with Casey, as well as seemingly okay with the thought of Emily on a talk-level basis with the guy. Maybe it was the power of friendship, but Scout just had this uncanny ability to flip a switch and take things graciously when it came to anything Emily-related.
That no less earned Scout another hug. "I'm glad you understand, bud... Heh, I bet I can knock a few words of sense into him if I haven't already...!"
It was as Scout said, she and him had the entire Gala to talk everything over.
Scout's sudden mention of food signalled that she needed a break from all the emotion sharing, something that Emily picked up on and respectably honoured. "I guess we do have a little bit of time before dinner... I think I have a few spare treats back in my room! Buuut... The kitchen is quicker," she grinned. She stood up and lifted Scout to her feet, immediately linking arms with her as they began walking back towards the castle.
"It'll be okay, Scout. Some how in some way, everything will all work out for us! We'll just take it all one step at a time...!"
