This is not a dream—no, it’s not a dream.

Vivian Polaris had to pinch her thigh countless times on the train just to confirm the reality of it all.

Ever since receiving her acceptance letter, she could no longer trust the common sense of the real world. Was this truly possible? Magic? Could such a thing, existing only in fairy tales and novels, really be real? Her well-read parents couldn’t answer these questions. They merely gave her peculiar looks, sighed, and said, "Whether to go or not is up to you."

In a daze, Vivian followed the guide assigned to Muggle-born students and bought all the necessary items for enrollment. Afterward, she barely slept a wink. Her precocious mind was filled with questions, as if only by truly stepping into this unheard-of magical academy could she find the answers.

She couldn’t admit it, but deep down, she was a little excited about the day she would leave home, about experiencing subjects she had never imagined. She even got up in the middle of the night to secretly flip through the textbooks she would use in the future, reading with wide eyes for hours before sneaking back to bed before her parents woke up.

To say she didn’t want to go to such an intriguing place would be a lie.

So, accompanied by her parents and her five-year-old sister, Vivian took a two-hour train ride from Manchester Piccadilly Station to London Euston Station. She didn’t cry. The four of them arrived at Euston and walked toward King’s Cross Station, and she still didn’t cry. She was too excited, clutching the corner of her robe so tightly that her palms were sweaty, as if the tears of farewell had flowed out through her hands.

Then came the goodbyes. She boarded the train, which sped toward the school. Everything happened so fast that she barely had time to feel sad. Thump-thump, thump-thump—her heartbeat was loud in her ears. She even forgot to talk more with her future classmates in the compartment—not that she was particularly good at that sort of thing. Still, she managed to receive two chocolate frogs from a friendly student.

“Thank you.” She tried to muster a sweet smile, though it likely came off awkward and stiff.

As the crowd followed one another into Hogwarts, Vivian finally felt the reality of being a wizard apprentice. The grandeur of the building’s interior, marked by traces of history, caught her eye, followed by the abundance of food on the tables.

Everything seemed to welcome their arrival. Yet, at that moment, she realized she had no idea what would happen next, nor what her path as a newcomer would entail.

Fortunately, the answers came soon enough.

The one who had sent her the letter, Headmaster Solomon Lear, began a speech detailing the history and significance of the Sorting Ceremony. Vivian listened intently, nodding at the interesting parts, until the magical Sorting Hat was brought out. The sight of it made her suddenly nervous, her hairs standing on end. Was it really that simple? A brief mental scan by an enigmatic entity to determine the group with which she would share the next seven years of life, care, and glory?

Vivian couldn’t imagine what she would be like seven years from now, nor could she fathom what sort of future this Sorting would lead her toward.

She was among the last students called to the front. Clutching her robe, she swallowed nervously as she approached the Sorting Hat.

The hat obscured her vision, plunging her into darkness. It stayed silent for a long time, long enough for her to think something had gone wrong. Just as she was about to take it off, the hat spoke.

“Oh, oh, wait a moment,” it said, startling her.

“Questioning the nature of things, brimming with curiosity, possessing excellent comprehension… and an arrogance ingrained in your very bones. How fascinating! You even doubt my existence.”

I just think it’s impractical, she thought, to which the hat responded, “Heh… one moment’s result doesn’t dictate everything. Can’t you still become the person you wish to be?”

“It could be Gryffindor, or Slytherin… or maybe neither? Regardless, I know the right place for you. Have you made up your mind? Shall I announce it?”

Vivian felt as if the world had been vacuumed of air. All she could hear was the hat’s voice, analyzing who she was, encouraging her to carve her own path, and her own whispered response: “Okay.”

RAVENCLAW!” the hat bellowed. The blue-and-silver-adorned table erupted in cheers and applause. Vivian flushed so deeply she thought her face might drip with blood, too embarrassed to believe the celebration was meant for her.

Just before removing the hat, she heard its final whisper: “Don’t lose your agency, young lady.”

Vivian trembled but bravely stepped toward the long table, meeting the welcoming smiles of her seniors and peers. She thought to herself: I won’t. I won’t become someone I don’t want to be. She would strive onward, scaling the peaks of knowledge, letting nothing stand in her way.

這不是夢,對,不是夢。

Vivian Polaris

After a deep breath, Swan followed the crowd of new students into the Great Hall. She felt a lot of things at this moment, joy, excitement, impatience, stress, fear, curiosity. That was a lot to take in. She was trying to hide the fact that she was nervous, but the way she was fidgeting on her necklace was betraying her.

When she entered, she was even more overwhelmed. The chatter coming from every corner of the room was making it really loud, and the four table seemed to never end. But like probably most of the students, what caught my attention was the flying candles. Of course, she heard about it but seeing it with her own eyes was special. She couldn’t help but also notice the food that looked delicious, until she got pulled out of her thoughts by the Headmaster of Hogwarts, who introduced himself.
The young girl listened intently, and let out a little giggle when the sorting hat intervened. She couldn’t help but be intrigued by the headmaster, his outfit was definitely an interesting choice.

Then everything went quickly, and soon enough, the blond headed found herself sat on the tool, with the Sorting what on her head. It was.. weird for the least to say. She could feel her cheeks reddening, she was feeling exposed. And the feeling of the hat reading into her like an open book was like being threatened that someone could reveal all her secrets. But of course it wasn’t the job of the Sorting Hat, it only aim was to give her a House that could define her next years there, just that, nothing important. Swan knew that her sister was a Ravenclaw student, a part of her wanted to be in the same House as her sister to have someone familiar with her, but another part of her also wanted to be sort in another house so she could build her own path. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the Sorting Hat spoke loudly :

— The loyal and hardworking, Hufflepuff !

The concerned table cheered, and Swan felt her cheeks going even more redder. She got up and walked towards the table, still overwhelmed but ready for this new adventure. She didn’t really know what to think about her house, so just decided to let herself be surprised.

Was this even real? Adeline gazed at the impressive facade of Hogwarts castle. It was even more grand than she could have imagined. The cold stench of wet stone and cedar filled the girls nose, and it felt like home. The train ride had been a wonderful journey- one that ended in a pair of new friends for Addie. Would they be sorted into the same house? All Addie could do was hope that would be the case.
As the children filed into the Castle and toward the Great Hall, Addie's wonder only grew. She spotted some of her future professors, legendary moving portraits, and plenty of tantalizing corridors. Entering the Great Hall felt like entering a dream- hundreds of candles, lit, but somehow not dripping, dotted the false sky above the tables, which were loaded with a variety of cuisine. The students filed in, one by one. The tension was palpable.
The Sorting Ceremony would begin soon.
Adeline had lost sight of the two girls she had met during the chaos at the boat docks, but she hadn't stopped scanning the crowds for any sight of them. Nothing. At least she would see them when their names were called. Adeline took a seat, and sat quietly as the ceremony began.
An important looking man took his place on the grand stage. He wore armor, and had a kind aura about him that made him feel quite approachable. He settled the students before loudly stating "Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As it is our tradition here we are going to engage in our first ceremony known as the sorting ceremony. The sorting hat has been a part of our school's tradition since the time of Godric Gryffindor, one of this institution's founding wizards. This hat is very much sentient." Suddenly, the HAT spoke,
"Sentient, I am intelligent"

Adeline sat in awe as she watched the hat speak, and begin to sort the other students. She was practically in a trance, when suddenly...
"Adeline Spinks!" She had been called. Adeline froze, but quickly collected herself. She gulped, straightened her robes, and took the daunting walk to the Sorting Hat. She sat on the stool, the sting of everyones eyes heavy on her conscience.
"I see..." The hat began. "I am sensing a bit of... hesitation? Or is it.. insecurity?" That didn't feel good. Adeline sat up straighter in an attempt to show the hat, and herself, that that was not the case. "NO! Perfectionism.. THAT is what I am sensing.. Intelligent, curious, and most definitely hard-working..." The hat trailed off, Adeline was getting nervous. Just when she thought the hat would never decide, it spoke once more. ".. and plenty of potential. Better be.... RAVENCLAW!
Adeline was relieved. She had always dreamed of joining the mighty eagles, enjoying the views from Ravenclaw tower, and sharing her days with like-minded friends. Hopefully Lisa and Karina are Ravenclaw too. She could only wish. Adeline joined her new family at their table, her fears of this year slowly morphing into dreams. What a day it had been.

Ellie sat at the table in awe of her surroundings. She had never seen such an extravagant building... or so many kids. The girl had never considered herself to be particularly shy, but the crowd was making her doubt herself. But back to the task at hand- the sorting ceremony.

The sorting ceremony had been one of the few things Ellie's father had known about and consequently explained to her when she received her letter. Apparently, your house was a big deal. Her father had told her that she would likely be put into Ravenclaw, for her intelligence. Ellie didn't mind that idea. She had often spent more time in a book than most of her peers. Ellie's pondering was cut short as she heard her name called.

She slid onto the stool, feeling nervous as the hat was placed upon her head. What would the hat say? Would it tell her she didn't belong?

"Of course you belong! The only question is where do you belong?"

Ellie startled a bit. She knew the hat would talk, but she didn't think it would be so loud. She supposed she should respond, but before she could-

"HUFFLEPUFF"

That seemed quite fast. Ellie felt like she was on autopilot as she smiled and went to the table dressed in yellow. She wasn't quite sure how to feel. She hadn't wanted Ravenclaw that badly, but she couldn't help but feel slightly put out. But as she looked around the table at what would become her peers, her worry dissipated. They seemed like good people. Ellie was glad to see herself considered one of them.

Eulalia stepped off the boats along with every first year around her. Unlike the other students, she'd spent the entire boat ride non-verbal. Observing. She wanted to get an idea of who she'd be surrounded by for the next seven years. What atmosphere she'd be in.

Walking through the halls of the stone castle, the footsteps of Eulalia and her peer's shoes echoed agains ths walls, ths slight flapping of their robes a secondary sound to her ears as small burts of air ran through them.

Observing the path they took to the Great Hall, Eulalia began memorizing her way around the castle, already predicting she might have an issue later. An unnecessary issue. One that her parents would not be happy about.

Walking through the stone halls, tje group of first years finally reached the Great Hall, gasps of wonder and shock surrounding her as everyone got their first look at the massive, enchancing room. Eulalia kept her poker face on, yet inside, she was ready to burst in amazement and excitemnet. This is what she'd been waiting for for so long.

A boice spurred her out of her thoughts. The name of the first student to get sorted. She watched as the kid went up, sitting down on the stool nervously before the old hat was placed on their head. Soon enough, the sound of a house being yelled out, followed by a bunch of cheers rang in her ears.

For the second time that day, Eulalia became anxious. What of the house she was sorted into wasn't going to be what her parents wanted? Would she disgrace the Vasilios name?

"Eulalia Vasilios!!!" rang through the hall.

That was her. That was her name. Steadying herself, Eulalia kept a straight face as she made her way up to the podium confidently before sitting on the stool. "Don't mess up" rang through her skull. Moments later, she felt the hat on her head and a voice that wasn't hers.

"Ooh, a Vasilios!" the voice exclaimed, "I haven't sorted one of you in a year or two."

Eulalia decided that this voice was the hat.

"Ahh, you're intelligent, such a wonderful mind. You crave knowledge too. You're independent, but you have ambition. You're willing to do what it takes to impress your parents, to bring pride to your name." the hat spoke.

"Hmm... I know you'll do best in... SLYTHERIN! the hat announced.

Eulalia smirked slightly. So far so good. Feeling the hat get lifted off her head, she walked towards the cheering table and took a seat. Eulalia knew her parents would be pleased with the result, and even better, is that she knew she'd be pleased too.

Following the mass of students from the boat house towards the great hall was a small time of release for Claudius. Boats, he had concluded on the way over the lake, were spawns of evil and he would never get back onto one! While he had been to the beach before this had been his first time on a boat.
Still absorbed in his new found dislike of those floating wooden constructs Claudius didn't notice that they had already arrived and nearly bumped into the student before him.
Finally back in the present time he took in the grand view of the great hall. He heard the stories about Hogwarts from his parents, that is from his mother mostly, but seeing it in person was something else than just hearing about it.
After listening to the Headmasters speech and alter the song of the Sorting Hat the young boy suddenly realized that he had no idea where he would fit the most, or even where he wanted to be sorted. Once his name was called Claudius walked to the front and the Hat was put on him.

"Hmm, where to put you?" sounded the Hats voice. "Ambition, yes.."
"Really? I don't even know where to go, how am I supposed to be ambitious?", questioned Claudius, interrupting the Hat in his thinking.
"Give it a couple years, but it is there. A bright mind as well, intelligent. But also kind and you are loyal to those that deserve it."

"I would say you belong with the eagles:"

"Ravenclaw!!"

With a smile on his face Claudius makes his way towards Ravenclaws table. He could get behind this decision, after all books where something he understood.

Louisa McStately’s eyes bulged in surprise as she entered the Great Hall. Sure, she had imagined it before but even in her wildest daydreams she had never thought it might be this… spectacular! From the four long tables that bore many children to the floating candles to the portraits on the wall. We’re they… talking? Louisa blinked in confusion but soon seeing a man cross towards the front she turned her attention upon him.

The man was, how to put it.. politely a little odd. He, Louisa hurriedly remembered, had greater them at the front doors of the hall. Louisa frowned, he had and did seem nice, but there was something that made her nervous. Trying not to feel nervous, let alone nauseous, Louisa willed all her attention on the man.

And he began, "Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” Louisa made an inaudible gasp of understanding. So that’s who he was - the Headmaster of Hogwarts. No wonder I felt nervous around him. He’s a professor after all! Thought Louisa satisfied, a small smile stretching across her face. For her, at least, it was natural to feel nervous around professors, let alone a headmaster.

As the Headmaster continued talking, Louisa felt an undeniable quench of nervousness. I’m going to be sorted. I’m going to be sorted. My future is about to start. I’m going to be sorted. Her throat tightened painfully, and her stomach buzzed with bees. She strained herself to listen and understand every single detail.

It was when a voice said “Sentient, I am intelligent” that Louisa turned around to see who had said it. A professor? No, one was rolling their eyes and they were all looking at a… a hat! No way! The hat couldn’t have spoken! Louisa’s eyes fluttered in excited confusion, trying to understand what she was sure was meant to be a joke and trying to understand the logic of a talking hat!

As the Headmaster began to talk of the process and the four houses, Louisa’s stomach began to knot even worse then before. What if I don’t belong? Or what if it can’t decide because I’m muggle born? Louisa’s fears began to grow rather to fast as she watched the other students get sorted.

”McStately, Louisa!” A voice called, awakening Louisa from her thoughts. With a nervous step, she made her way to the small stool and readied herself next to the professor with the hat.

”Mmm, uh huh!” The hat began, causing Louisa to jump in her seat. You are ambitious, oh yes, and you want to prove your worth. Smart, yes, very studious. But loyal. Friends mean more then anything to you do they? Louisa felt herself gulp to speak a yes, but alas - the hat had continued! Loyal and hardworking, oh yes, then you shall belong in… HUFFLEPUFF!

Louisa sprang up a huge beaming smile crossing her face. Any house that was loyal and hardworking would certainly suit her perfectly! With a joyful spring in her step, she headed towards the Hufflepuff table.

As Fiona MacGregor stepped into the Great Hall at Hogwarts for the first time, she was struck by the sheer majesty and grandeur of the place. The enchanted ceiling above mirrored the night sky, dotted with a tapestry of twinkling stars that seemed to stretch on forever. The four long tables were filled with students eagerly awaiting the Sorting Ceremony, their faces alight with anticipation.

The golden glow of countless floating candles cast a warm and inviting light over the hall. Fiona's heart raced with a mix of excitement and nerves as she took in the sight of the professors seated at the staff table, including the imposing yet kind-eyed Headmaster, Solomon Lear.

As a Muggle-born, Fiona couldn't help but feel a slight pang of uncertainty. She wondered if her lack of magical heritage would set her apart from the others, if she would ever truly fit into this world of wonders she had only recently discovered. The chatter in the hall hushed as the Headmaster, holding a scroll and the Sorting Hat, stepped forward. Fiona watched in awe as one by one, new students were called to sit on the stool and don the ancient, frayed hat that would decide their fate. She couldn't help but feel a mix of curiosity and anxiety as her turn approached.

Finally, her name was called. "MacGregor, Fiona!" Headmaster Lear's voice echoed through the hall. With a deep breath, Fiona walked up to the stool and sat down, feeling the weight of the hat settle on her head.

"Hmm," the Sorting Hat's voice murmured in her ear, "I see a kind heart, a love for nature, and a strong sense of loyalty. You value friendship and are not afraid of hard work. Yes, I know just where to put you—Hufflepuff!"

A wave of relief and joy washed over Fiona as the hat declared her house. The Hufflepuff table erupted in cheers and applause, welcoming her with open arms. She couldn't help but smile as she joined her new housemates, feeling a sense of belonging and excitement for the adventures that lay ahead at Hogwarts.

Headmaster Solomon Lear gave her an approving nod, and Fiona knew she was exactly where she was meant to be. The Great Hall, with its magic and grandeur, had made a lasting impression on her, marking the beginning of her journey in the wizarding world.

Sorting Ceremony 2024-2025
IC date: 1st of September

Walking among the crowd of students, Arden kept their pace rapid. Not wanting to fall to the back of the crowd, they wanted to be at the front of the crowd, even if it meant awkwardly shuffling in front of another student. Though their attention had been caught by the castle itself, the high roof and detailed architecture, it reminded them slightly of a church that they had visited with their father, in Glarus, Switzerland, where one of the last witch burnings happened. Though unlike the church, Hogwarts seemed to be mostly made out of stone and was much larger and more magnificent. Arden found the castle impressive, despite having seen so many other magical sights, hogwarts just felt different.

The large pair of wooden doors opened before their eyes. The Great Hall was definitely a sight to see. Arden slowed their hurried steps as they blinked at the bright stars that glittered on the ceiling. Arden wondered for a moment if they would learn to make a sky like that in any of the classes, is it charms? Or maybe the lifelike image was runes or it might be part of the castle's inherent ancient magic. Arden even spotted a few constellations that they recognized, even though the names of the stars escaped them. With a calm feeling Arden lowered their gaze to the actual tables, slightly embarrassed to be caught gawking at the ceiling.

Arden stilled slightly, regretting their decision to strive to be at the front of the crowd of students as they observed the Hogwarts students at the tables. They wouldn’t even be called soon, if their aunt's explanation that the students were called to do their sorting ceremony in alphabetical order was true. Arden resisted the urge to sigh as they began to observe their fellow first years getting sorted.

They were slightly surprised by the sorting hat, it looked quite old and Arden didn’t think they wanted to put on an old hat that had been worn by hundreds of students before them. Though it didn't seem like they were getting a choice on the matter, so Arden decided to resign themselves to the task, besides it was traditional to get sorted by the sorting hat as had every other student before them. That thought made Arden feel a bit better. Family traditions were quite important and Arden was quite excited to see what kind of traditions Hogwarts possessed. The castle was centuries old and filled with history, so some of the traditions might be a few of the oldest wizarding traditions alive!

The hat called out the house of the fourth student as Arden realized they had not been paying any attention, straightening up as their gaze flicked around the hall. Hoping no one had paid enough attention to them to notice their absentminded state. Arden suppressed the urge to grimace at their own behavior. It was just the nerves getting to them and the unfamiliar crowded place that they would have to stay in until the holidays.

Arden wasn’t often around crowds, preferring the solitude at home, maybe spending time with their father or going to visit an old magical forest in Norway. They had even gotten their school supplies quite early, on a quiet Tuesday morning with their aunt when Diagon Alley wasn't as hectic as usual. It was safe to say that Arden was unsure of how to act around this many people, especially people near their own age.

Arden perked up, hearing the first R starting surname be called. Preparing mentally as they knew they would be called soon. Schooling their face as they made sure their posture was perfect, their head held high as they pretended to not feel the nervousness rising up their spine. Arden smoothed down their robes slightly, wishing they could get this over with as fast as possible.
‘’Rosethorn, Arden!’’
Their name was called out, Arden patiently walking forward, keeping their steps fast but not hurried. Sitting down gingerly as they placed their hands on their lap, closing their eyes as the sorting hat was placed on their head.

'hmm rosethorn is it?..', The hat hummed. Arden realized that the sorting hat was a magical object, well not the usual kind of magical object, but one that seemed quite sentient compared to most. ‘Indeed’ Arden thought, slightly curious to see if the hat could pick up on their thoughts or only their mind. Arden could hear the hat chuckle in their head ‘Well that’s certainly true. Quite curious are you....though there is a lot of loyalty in you... You aren’t the bravest or boldest either…there is ambition and pride too.., choices, choices..Then again..hm i think that is it’ The small voice rambled, before announcing out loudly ‘HUFFLEPUFF!’

Arden resisted letting out a wince at the hat’s loud voice before they set the hat down from their head. Placing it on the stool before swiftly moving to the hufflepuff table. Quite content with their house, they knew that their father would be happy for them no matter their house, but Arden thought hufflepuff suited them more than their father’s slytherin or their aunt’s ravenclaw. It would have been quite nice to be in the same house as their father, but it didn't matter now. Settling down at their table as they spared a glance at the other first years, maybe this could go well?

Sorting Ceremony 2024-2025
September 1st

The Great Hall was overwhelming to Kayla. She tried to keep her mouth closed as she looked up at the grand ceiling and the decorations. She quickly snapped back when she bumped into the person in front of her after they stopped. After a quick apology and pat on the back she continued to look around. She noticed she wasn't the only one enjoying the sights of the hall, others in the new group of students were admiring the scene as well. She tried to look friendly and excited since these will be the same people she will spend the next few years with; looking for potential friends and study partners.

She looked over the different tables, noting the distinguishable colors, wondering which house she would be sorted into. Her father didn't experience this, but he mother always said it was the most exciting part of Hogwarts. Kayla tried to remember which house she said she was sorted into, Ravenclaw? Maybe, don't think it was Hufflepuff, but her father always joked that's probably where he would end up. The thought was broken at the booming voice at the front of the Great Hall of the Headmaster; then names began to be called.

With each name then the houses be announced, her excitement and anxiety rose. Before long they were already calling out the R surnames. Kayla watched a new Hufflepuff go to their table. She thought to herself; maybe I'll be in that house and be friends with them? Wait do I need to be in the same house, maybe we'll have classes together, wait what was their name again? It was just called out, how did she expect to go good in class if she can't even remember a name-. The thought was halted when she suddenly heard her own name.

"Slattery, Kayla!"

Kayla pushed her way to the front, on her way should could tell her very Irish name said where she was from already, while we were all kids; family teachings shape us differently. She nervously took her seat under the sorting hat as it was placed on her head.

"Ah, aren't you interesting, plenty of knowledge can fit in this head of yours. Plenty of determination to prove yourself, I see."
The hat muttered, Kayla was to excited to talk, her head was racing just thinking about all the experiences she's had at museums and family trips.
"My, this is a easy decision."
The hat pauses and loudly bellows
"Gryffindor!"

Kayla's heart swells with pride and hops down from the chair, everyone in the Great Hall is clapping; but she has tunnel vision walking to her new family. She takes a seat with the other Gryffindors, looking around at her future friends, excited to begin her new journey.

Where you off to? Can I come too??
