The Drowsy Unchaperoned
brewing another potion with: Reuben Garcia @Mellani Miller
Della watched as Reuben finished their first potion. She almost regretted asking him about dueling since what came next was an outpouring of words—this kid sure could talk. But he seemed to be a competent potioneer, so it didn't bother Della too much. Their first potion looked as it should, and it was almost time to move to the second.
As she gathered the ingredients and organized them, she responded to him: "I'm a muggleborn, so I didn't know that pureblood parents took sports so seriously. I mean I guess some muggle parents feel the same about their kids joining football or rugby—keep up the family legacy and all that." Della hoped her blood status wouldn't be a problem for Reuben. He seemed affable enough, not the type to get caught up in those kinds of politics, but it was always hard to tell. Of course, she wasn't going to bring up the mystery of her father's side of the family, which may involve a pureblood lineage.
"I guess as long as you enjoy it, right? You sound like you're making the most of dueling. And you speaking isn't bothering me—I suppose getting to know each other a little bit will help us with the final task." And maybe even help with forming a long-distance friendship—it wouldn't be too bad for Della to have a talkative foreigner to look forward to seeing a few times a year. "Yeah, I'm captain of one of the house broom racing teams. We're pretty good, but one of the other houses is really good, too. I guess you can say they're our rivals. We're facing them next week in the first match of the school year. And yeah, Slytherin has had quite the losing streak—at least as long as I've been here. But it's a new year, things could change."
With that, it was time to start preparing the second potion: Della took one spoonful of bdellium and added it to the mortar, grounding it down into a sticky paste. She added one measure of it to the cauldron. Then she crushed a single chamomile leaf into powder, also adding one measure of that to the cauldron. She turned the heat to medium and carefully counted out twenty-five seconds aloud (hoping to single to Reuben so as not to interrupt her concentration here). In the same fashion, she removed the cauldron so it could cool and counted out five seconds. Then she added two measures of the standard ingredient, placing it back on medium heat. She waved her wand over it and made room for Reuben to access the cauldron.
"It has an hour of brewing, and then it will be your turn. How does Hogwarts compare to Uagadou? I've never even left the UK to be honest. Coming to school here was my first time in Scotland, in fact."

Reuben perked up the moment Della mentioned that she was a muggleborn. "Oh! Muggleborns always fascinated me! Like how does magic just appear in someone? Also don't worry, I don't care about blood status and stuff, that's just my parents. I had a lot of muggle friends who I used to sneak out and meet, because my parents would not let me meet any."
Della was right about Reuben enjoying dueling. It might not be much, but he got to meet new people every year, just like he was meeting Della this time. Hopefully, they would become friends (if they weren't already) and their friendship would last. Long distance friendships hopefully weren't as hard as long distance relationships.
"Yeah, I do enjoy dueling. I try and make the most of everything, because how are you supposed to be happy in life if you don't cherish every moment, right? Also which is the other house? Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw? I've heard Ravenclaw people are really smart!"
Once Della started preparing the second potion, Reuben shut up, getting that she need to concentrate. Her loud counting hinted as much. Reuben looked at the recipe, and hoped their idea would work. Finally the time came for the potion to brew for one hour, which meant one hour of waiting and talking and making a new friend. Reuben set the timer, and then answered Della.
"Honestly, I can't say much about Uagadou compared to Hogwarts because I haven't really attended any classes here. The thing I like about Hogwarts is the weather, because it's really hot in Africa like pretty much all year round, whereas at Hogwarts, it's cool enough to not feel like your feet might burn the moment you keep them on the ground. Overall, Uagadou is as awesome school though, and I love all the teachers and people there."
Once one hour was up, Reuben got to his part. He first added one measure of standard ingredient, then heated on highest temperature, putting a timer on for two minutes. Once that was done, he added 2 valerian sprigs to the cauldron, stirred three times anticlockwise, and once clockwise. Once that was done, he waved his wand. "Aaaaaand all the potion brewing for today is done!! Hopefully nothing goes wrong, and we win this thing! Not that it matters if we don't. I would have made a new friend and had an amazing day brewing potions, and what more could anyone ask for, right?"
