The Pine Tree and the Rain
The morning air was slightly chilly for summer at a brisk nineteen degrees Celsius. Clouds were forming overhead, seemingly taunting the grounds with an early afternoon storm. Looking out the window, Victoria decided that she had better go on an adventure now if it was going to happen today, otherwise she would get caught in potentially nasty rains.
Preparing for rain, Victoria began to get dressed and get gear together. After thoroughly preparing, she left her room decked out in dark jeans, teal rain boots, a matching long-sleeved teal t-shirt, and a yellow rain coat. As Victoria was beginning to look over the land to decide where her adventure would take her today, her attention was drawn to a peculiar looking piece of parchment attached to a notice board for Hogwarts students. Upon further inspection of the paper, she realized it was a request for students to volunteer to help upkeep the grounds during the time of summer camp. Listed were six simple tasks that they could choose from and would be compensated for upon completion. Victoria quickly read over the list and decided that she would help with the collecting of trash as she loved animals, and this seemed like something that would help them out the most. Scanning over the instructions a second time, she found where she needed to go to get the materials to begin her project and headed off in that direction.
What an absolutely gorgeous place, she thought to herself as she walked. Even with clouds overhead, the brilliantly green grass in every direction seemed to glow as if the sunlight had been captured and incased in each blade. The trees stood mighty and strong, gently swaying to one side as the wind pushed against their leaves. Although it was a very short walk to get the supplies, a rabbit, a few birds and squirrels, and a deer, all made an appearance to Victoria. She smiled at each of them, feeling somewhat like Snow White talking to all the woodland animals as she told them all hello. “You are very cute,” she complimented one particular squirrel. As she hunched down to get a better look at the creature, it looked up at her then scurried frantically in the opposite direction. A quick giggle slipped from Victoria’s lips. Okay maybe I’m not so much like Snow White, she thought. She seemed to have much better luck getting the creatures to speak to her.
Finally making her way to the cleanup equipment area, Victoria found another instruction note. “Take what you need, but leave enough for others to help,” she softly read aloud to herself. “Bring all items back when you are done and dispose of bags in the appropriate bins.” Turning her head to the side, Victoria found the bins that they must have been talking about. Gloves, bags, recycling bins, pointed sticks, and a few other items that Victoria couldn’t identify were neatly sorted and placed on a bright green table for anyone to use. It appeared no one had yet come to get equipment that date, and by the looks of it, it didn’t seem like anyone else would be coming for a while. I guess it’s just me today, Victoria thought as she grabbed a pair of gloves and a recycling bin. Well that’s okay, that means it will only be me that is scaring the animals away.
Slipping on the gloves and carrying a large blue recycling bin, Victoria made her way down the grounds towards places she thought she might find rubbish. Cluttered around a towering pine tree was a massive amount of trash and recyclables that were left behind by multiple children. It was so messy that it could have passed as the living space of multiple people for several weeks. Victoria sighed as she began to pull recycling from the pile into the bin. She greatly enjoyed that she was able to help keep the grounds clean and help the animals, but it angered her that people had left such an amazing amount of rubbish around in the first place. There were literally hundreds of rubbish bins around the grounds of the castle that the trash could have been disposed of – not to mention many of the campers were above first year and undoubtedly knew spells that could have been used to help guide their trash to the provided bins. As she picked up piece after piece and placed it in her bin, she couldn’t help but wonder what kinds of people she would meet while she stayed here for the next seven years.
After nearly an hour had passed, she had finally finished sorting what used to be a massive pile. All the recycling had gone into her bin (that must have been enchanted by someone – she could have sworn there was much more recycling than the amount that seemed to be in there now). All the trash that she found she placed in a neat pile, hoping to make the job easier for the person who would choose to pick up the trash. Standing back from the tree a bit, she looked at her work and was pleased. Many animals would now be able to utilize this area and would be all the safer doing so.
By the time she was done and making her way back to the table to return her items, the first rain drops began to fall. There was not enough rain that it was hard to see or that she was bothered by it, but it was enough that many people would run to find shelter. Victoria, however, enjoyed it. The smell of the rain filled her lungs and she grinned from ear to ear as she placed her bin in the appropriate area. Today had not been the most adventurous adventure, but she was satisfied none-the-less. Now that it was raining, she would go back to her bed, snuggle into the sheets, and read a book to go on a completely different kind of adventure.
