Growing From The Ground
Airlia · Lumi · Winter
As a student that would have to travel to her home country right after leaving Hogwarts, Airlia packed early to be through and avoid the huge hassle as everyone else packed and thus had some free time during the busiest hours at Hogwarts. So as a well-raised young woman, she offered to help with some errands. The job that landed on her was gardening and Airlia didn't really mind. She was quite good at herbology and this errand was practically made for her.
She hummed a happy song as she walked around one of the greenhouses looking around at where she should start. There were a lot of plants that were in small pots too tiny for them to keep growing comfortably. Some of them had roots spurting out from the bottom to get more space and others had even cracked ceramic pots.
When Airlia got to work she rolled up her sleeves and put on gardening gloves. She pulled flowers, herbs, and other saplings from their pots threw away the broken ones and planted plants into bigger pots after adding fresh soil to replace the old, dry one. It was actually a pretty nice sight to see the plants in bigger pots where they actually fit. And now with free smaller pots unused, Airlia placed seeds in those so that after summer vacation there would be ready baby plants waiting for herbology.
At last Airlia filled a watering can and watered all the flowers in the greenhouses before finally going outside to start her work on the grounds.
It was a sunny day so Airlia wore a big summer hat to shield her skin from burning as she certainly would, if she were to spend too much time in the heat.
Airlia started from a tulip field. The tulips were gorgeous and looked like they were thriving. Red seemed to have taken most of the space from the small field as the yellow and purple seemed to be drowning in the red ones. It seemed that the soil on Hogwarts was so fertile that every flower planted rose from the ground and towards the skies faster than anywhere else. She walked along the field, watering them as she passed and felt the soft petals graze her hands.
The number of different plants around grounds were astonishing. They went from magical to muggle variety, to creatures that looked like flowers but actually weren't. Airlia learned that the hard way when she flowered a big, red bud growing near a hollow tree that suddenly jumped up with a snarl and looked at her with bid wide eyes revealed behind ears that looked like petals. There were flowers that sang, danced and jumped, others Airlia had seen around the muggle world and seemed to bear no purpose. The ones that dance were Airlia's favorites. She also really liked the purple Foxgloves, but knew they were poisonous and thus didn't touch them at all while watering.
When every flower was refreshed with some water Airlia took to the second step of her list. Planting flowers by the lake. She got on her knees to the ground and buried her gloved hands into the dirt as she planted plants of all kinds. Mostly those that needed a lot of water and by the lake would get just that.
There were hard roots sometimes in her way as she was digging a spot to plant a bigger bulb and would have to use the mattock provided to her. She had to move to another spot when the soil suddenly turned dry and the grass around it was dead. It almost looked like someone had been practicing spells unsupervised.
She got rid of all the biggest weeds from the grounds. it was a tough demanding job and after the muscles were like butter from pulling out the resilient greenery trying to kill everything planted. Weeds were a plight in anyone's garden as they stole all the sun and nutrients from all pretty flowers and juicy vegetables and fruits.
Next, it was time to go to the vegetable garden and took tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and green peas so the ones on cooking duty could make a traditional green salad.
Digging for potatoes was a dirty job, they were rooted in the ground so tightly she kept falling over when she pulled them out of the ground. The potatoes would taste excellent however when grilled with some corn and summer zucchini. Fresh-grilled vegetables taste amazing with brand new potatoes of summer. Add a little aroma with grilled sweet potatoes and you would have the perfect summer meal.
Then, she went to find some fruit for a fruit salad and picked some purple grapes, red apples and pear. Some honey melon and pineapple would give the fruit salad a nice twist in taste so it wouldn't be as plain.
She placed all the fruit and vegetables into a basket and took them to one of the greeneries where she could lightly wash them in a water bucket. I didn't want to have to carry them to the castle all muddy and full of dirt. Prewashing them would also make it easier for those who would prepare the food and since everyone was packing it was quite a hassle around the castle. Thus Airlia did all she could to help her fellow students and the staff that seemed to have their hands full trying to contain all the ruckus. The packing charm was being overused around the castle even by those that weren't too advanced in charms and thus clothing, books and trunks were flung around dorm rooms as the spell went wrong on occasion.
Airlia even saw a Ravenclaw girl get hit in the head with a book and have to go see a teacher to heal a cut she got on her forehead.
Frankly, Airlia was glad to be outside and away from the hurries of the castle.
When she was finally done with everything on her to-do list she gave a content sigh and looked at the two hours of work she's just put in. The flowers glimmered in the sun as the light reflected from water droplets. The vegetable garden now had more space and the weeds were gone from around plants that had been almost swallowed by the pesky little things hogging all the sun, water and nutrients. For certain, the small tulip field would thrive even more now when the flowers had more space to bloom.
