OOC: I actually want to torture Aurelia first before she could even write the W.H.I.P article she desires. Builds character, full-time coddling is a no can do, lol. Made this open-ended so anyone can disturb Aurelia's work! (An excerpt is referenced from the original Hogwarts: A History copy by Bathilda Bagshot, Alarm Eighteen, N. Zentaurius (Illustrator). Full credit goes to them for the whole excerpt.)
DECEMBER 14 | TIME: 8:40 | Great Lake
Aurelia Valentine squealed when she slipped and slid down the snowy slope. Thankfully, she didn't hit any tree as she attempted slowing down her momentum by digging her winter boots in the snow; it served as a terrible mistake since instead of sliding down, she started rolling forward—face first—and the whole thing only stopped when the Hufflepuff witch reached an even footing. Half-expecting that she'd meet her perilous end in the frozen Great Lake with no witness whatsoever, Aurelia let out a whimper before trying to kneel in all fours.

Who actually likes winter in the first place? I'm going to give them a good talking to and smack some sense into them, Aurelia thought to herself as she huffed out a chilly breath, the gesture visible in the wintry air. The Hufflepuff witch scrambled to stand up, hoping against hope that no one saw that embarrassing moment of vulnerability as she looked around before picking up her leather satchel. Trusting that stupid tradition about tapping one's wand seven times on the rim of Helga Hufflepuff's cup—the copy, of course—for good fortune seems like a stretch. This is why she wasn't superstitious. First step of Wintry Hogwarts' Informative Exploration (W.H.I.P.), and she's already rolling down the snowy hill with a great risk of breaking her neck. Upon that realisation, Aurelia wrapped her Hufflepuff scarf around her neck more securely than ever. As if that would prevent anything.

It would prevent her from freezing all over. For Helga's sake, her winter cloak and coat are already wet from that roll! Choosing the Great Lake might have been the worst idea to start off the exploration. But then again, it stopped snowing in the meantime, and she thought she'd rather seize the opportunity to explore the grounds and the outdoors first before she loses that chance because of the weather. Shivering slightly, Aurelia brushed away the snow over the large boulders with her gloved hands before setting down her leather satchel. Her brown eyes sweep the scenery, devouring every detail as she put her gloved hands over her hips.

The Great Lake is so beautiful in winter. The supposed murky waters are entirely frozen, glittering midly. She didn't want to test the brittleness of the crystallised surface, but it is more likely possible to skate here. Skilful figure skating, more like. The stones that served as steppingstones within the lake are also covered in snow but not entirely submerged. The trees are also glittering with collected snow on the treetops. If while rolling down and she had hit one of them, she would've broken her back plus the collected snow would be disturbed and drop down on her, covering her dead corpse. Now that's an anticlimactic way to die. The scenery is, indeed, beautiful, but is it worth breaking a few bones for? Aurelia didn't think so.

Catching herself from being distracted once again, Aurelia approached her leather satchel and opened it. Taking out her copy of Hogwarts: A History by Bathilda Bagshot as well as parchment and muggle ballpoint pen, she flipped through the pages with her wand to prevent it from getting wet. The Hufflepuff witch let out a sigh of frustration and exasperation when she saw the fonts of the blasted textbook. King James' Version of the Bible-esque, more like. When she first read the book months ago, she had a difficult time identifying H to T, R to B. It took a lot of patience and time to finish reading this book, therefore she didn't get to finish it.

“Okay, here goes,” Aurelia mumbled to herself before clearing her throat, “The Great Lake—also known as the Black Lake, this is the large body of water located to the South of Hogwarts Castle. It is about half a mile in diameter; in some places, many fathoms deep, and full of creatures that would make a Muggle naturalist swoon with delight—as long as terror did not seize them first... As previously mentioned, the grounds of Hogwarts function partly as a nature reserve for magical creatures which have difficulty existing in Muggle inhabited areas, as is true for the Great Lake. There are Grindylows, Merpeople (a hardy Scottish strain) and a giant squid, which is somewhat domesticated and permits students to tickle its tentacles on sunny days, while it basks in the shallows.

The lake is often said to be very cold, but more daring students have, on occasion, been known to swim in it. This is not necessarily advised by the staff, however, as the castle's plumbing network drains into it.”

Wondering if she had read that right, Aurelia stood up from the large boulder she was sitting on, her eyes bulging as she eyed the frozen Great Lake warily. Half-expecting that some large tentacle would just break the crystallised surface or some sort of magical creature and magical being would jump out and stab her, the Hufflepuff witch scribbled furiously on her parchment as she jotted down the information.

OOC: THIS IS NOT MINE, just so you know. Full credits goes to the person who rightfully owned Hogwarts: A History. Kneeways, isn't it difficult to read? I've been struggling to read this ever since Aurelia started her exploration. This is the type of textbook I just know how King James' Version of the Bible was ever written. lol

Surprisingly to Juliana, her second year at Hogwarts taught her that winter could be beautiful. Despite her hatred for the biting cold, the snowy landscape had a strange allure, pulling her out of the cozy library and into the crisp air with no mercy. She walked carefully along the path, her black skirt swishing slightly over her warm tights. Her white jumper, snug beneath her brown coat, was thick enough to keep her warm, but the cold still nipped at her cheeks, turning them a soft pink. She adjusted the Ravenclaw scarf around her neck, its blue and silver stripes neatly arranged.

Juliana wasn’t sure why she’d ventured toward the Great Lake. Maybe it was the rare sunlight making the snow glisten, or the idea of capturing the winter scenery in her notes. A sketch or two might be nice. Or maybe it was just an excuse to escape the hum of chatter in the common room. Oh how much she hated crowded places. Spending a little time alone will do me good. "But just a little, then I need to do the —"

Her thoughts were interrupted by an unexpected fall ahead. A figure tumbled down a snowy slope, near the frozen lake. Juliana froze, her hand clutching her satchel. She wanted to rush forward to help but hesitated. Should I? What if the person snapped at her for intruding?

Finally, with a deep breath to calm her nerves, she approached cautiously. Her boots crunched softly against the snow, and her heart raced as she drew nearer. The unknown girl was furiously brushing snow off her leather satchel, noticably muttering under her breath. As usual, Juliana stood awkwardly a little above the fellow witch, her fingers red from the skin-biting temperature as she held her satchel close to her body. My presence could possibly be another reason for her to grow even more upset.

Juliana’s gaze jumped over the scene, taking in the other girl’s snow-dusted coat and slightly disheveled scarf. She couldn’t help but notice the determination with which the girl attempted to compose herself. The sight made Juliana’s lips twitch with an almost-smile, though she quickly brushed it off. Her own awkwardness made her hyper-aware of others, and the last thing she wanted was to come off as a stalker. Instead, she lingered quietly, feeling her own shyness creep back as her mind began its usual overanalysis. She doesn’t look hurt, at least. That’s good. But . . . Should I just walk past? That seems rude. Maybe she’d appreciate company?

Juliana’s thoughts spun as the other girl — clearly a Hufflepuff from her scarf — sat down on one of the boulders near the lake, her leather satchel now safely perched beside her. Juliana noticed a book she pulled out. She’s studying? Out here? In the cold? Juliana’s curiosity piqued, briefly overriding her nerves. Maybe she’s preparing for something. Or maybe she just likes the quiet too. The idea of someone else seeking solace in the snowy expanse made Juliana feel a little less strange for her own escape.

Adjusting her satchel on her shoulder, Juliana glanced around the deserted area. The glistening lake stretched out like a painting, its frozen surface reflecting the pale winter sky. For a moment, the serene beauty grounded her. If she doesn’t mind my presence, this might not be a bad spot to settle for a while. Taking slow, measured steps down the slope, Juliana approached, careful not to disturb the Hufflepuff’s focus. Her boots left faint imprints in the snow, and she clutched the edges of her coat, more for comfort than warmth. She stopped a few feet away, unsure whether to announce herself or simply sit.

Juliana hesitated for a moment, her breath visible in the cold air as she debated whether to say something. The girl’s focus on her book seemed unwavering, and Juliana worried that speaking might disrupt the peaceful atmosphere. But the memory of the tumble down the slope lingered in her mind. It felt odd not to acknowledge it — almost impolite to just sit there as if nothing had happened.

She shifted her weight, her boots crunching faintly against the packed snow. She might think I followed her if I just stay silent. Juliana cleared her throat softly, more to give herself courage than to grab attention. “I, um . . . saw you fall earlier,” she said, her voice hesitant but gentle. Juliana immediately wondered if she’d made a mistake by mentioning it. I should've just stayed quiet. Now she probably thinks I’m some nosy bystander.

“I mean . . .” Juliana began again, fidgeting with the strap of her satchel. “You seem fine now, but I thought . . . well, just in case you weren’t.” Her words tumbled out in a hurried, slightly disjointed flow, betraying her nerves.

Although the voice that had emerged from her side had been gentle like a soft wind, Aurelia Valentine still screeched as she jumped up from her seat on the boulder. Half-expecting that it was from a magical creature originally inhibiting the Great Lake and now about to stab her, the young Hufflepuff witch whirled around towards the voice, ready to smack with her trusted copy of Hogwarts: A History. She let out a huff in disbelief when she saw that it was only a student. A Ravenclaw girl. Aurelia quirked an eyebrow, inquiring if she had heard that right.

As Aurelia composed herself from that embarrassing display of agitation, the young Hufflepuff witch observed the girl. They almost have the same features; dark hair with deep brown eyes. But unlike Aurelia, this Ravenclaw witch is clearly beautiful. The girl's cascading waves contrasted Aurelia's messy and frizzy hair, and there is an intense look in her eyes with a deep sense of thoughtfulness. Her voice might have been soft and gentle but the Ravenclaw witch emitted confidence in her posture, which highlighted her elegance and grace. Merlin, if this Ravenclaw witch had been a muggle, Aurelia Valentine would have thought that she was a socialite.

As if she had become highly self-aware, Aurelia pressed down her messy locks to make it appear, well, brushed and to prevent it from sticking in all directions. She knows her hair though, millions of bobby pins and her rebellious hair will not be tamed. It might have been the cold or from embarrassment when the young Hufflepuff witch processed what the girl had said and she flushed slightly. Someone saw her tumble down from that stupid snowy slope. Upon the reminder though, she shifted her weight in the other side as she noticed the slight pain in her knees. Aurelia landed on the frozen surface of the Great Lake after all, and she's sure as dung that it will bruise.

Wincing slightly, Aurelia breathed heavily; her breath visible from the chilly air. Merlin, this interaction is unprecedented and she was not prepared at all. She thought the scowl planted on her face from the biting cold will repel any human interaction as she busied herself with her first exploration in the Great Lake. She couldn't bring herself to be mean though, as the Ravenclaw witch only approached from, surely, goodwill intentions. Calming herself down from social anxiety, Aurelia spoke.

“It's fine, I'm fine,” Aurelia huffed, now approaching her leather satchel resting on the boulder she was sitting on earlier. She opened it and crammed her book inside hurriedly. Usually she put her things carefully in her satchel as she wanted them organised inside, but the prospect of someone seeing her fall and roll down from that snowy hill like Jill and that stupid poem—she'd rather run away, change her name and identity, and live as a hag somewhere within the Scottish Highlands. “Thank you for the concern though.”

Juliana Allen had never thought that someone could be thrown off by her presence the same way as the Hufflepuff girl. She blinked, confused by her own decision to ask such a, in her head, stupid question. Juliana's grip instinctively tightened on the strap of her satchel as she made sure her back was straightened. A little voice in her head told her to apologize to the poor startled girl in front of her, yet she unconsciously pursed her lips even tighter, almost as if all the vocabulary had left her brain. Nothing left her lips. Not even a word.

As Juliana noticed the intense gaze of the girl, she felt a flicker of self-consciousness light up at the bottom of her stomach. Especially when the Hufflepuff's eyes seemed to scan her hair and posture. It wasn’t often that Juliana felt noticed in this way. Usually, she was the one quietly observing others from the background. Her cheeks warmed, though whether from the cold or the unexpected attention, she couldn’t say.

Juliana frowned once she heard the audible wince and noticed the girl's change of stance. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I just—” She hesitated, unsure if she should add anything more, but the Hufflepuff's flustered movements as she crammed her book into her satchel caught her attention. There was something almost endearing about it. She couldn't say if that action had been caused by the unexpected appearance of Juliana Allen, or by the urge to hide something.

When the Hufflepuff spoke again, brushing off Juliana’s concern with a huff, Juliana tilted her head slightly, studying her. The girl’s flushed cheeks and hurried movements betrayed her embarrassment, and Juliana’s instinctive shyness urged her to step back, to leave the interaction before it grew more awkward. But something about the other girl — her fiery defensiveness, perhaps, or the vulnerability beneath it — made Juliana linger.

“You’re sure you’re fine?” she asked gently, her tone more thoughtful than probing. Her hand drifted to the star-shaped earring at her ear, an instinctive reach for comfort. Her eyes flickered briefly to the girl’s knees before returning to her face. “It looked like quite a fall.” She offered a tentative smile, hoping to soften the moment.

Juliana shifted her satchel to her other shoulder, the strap digging slightly into her coat. The girl’s flushed face and hurried movements reminded her of herself — awkward and desperate to deflect attention. She understood that feeling all too well, and perhaps that was why she stayed, despite her usual tendency to avoid prolonged interactions.

For a fleeting moment, she considered walking away, giving the Hufflepuff her space. But instead, she stood her ground, allowing the crisp winter air to fill the silence as she waited, patiently and quietly, for the other girl’s response. Something within her made her reach out her hand for a handshake. Juliana extended her hand, hesitating for just a fraction of a second, her fingers tightening briefly as if to ground herself before speaking. "Sorry, I suppose I should introduce myself." Juliana cleared her throat, making sure her voice wouldn't betray her. "I'm Juliana. Juliana Allen."

It’s snowing again. When a snowflake lightly sat on the Ravenclaw witch’s dark hair, Aurelia looked up to inspect the skies. Snowflakes slowly trickled down, already putting down any plans that involved outdoors—especially Aurelia's plan to explore outdoors for her Wintry Hogwarts' Informative Exploration; which dampened her already sour mood. Aurelia huffed exasperatedly, her visible breath a reminder she had to ambulate back to the castle soon for shelter. She slung the strap of her leather satchel over her shoulder.

As if forgetting that there was a Ravenclaw witch standing near her, Aurelia went over her mental list again. She intends to start her exploration outdoors. However, the extreme cold did give her headaches for no apparent reason, like the cold itself had a certain amount of weight she couldn't carry. It also happens sometimes with her hair with how thick it is; braids don't even help. Aurelia wasn't finished exploring the Great Lake yet; studying about the ecological patterns of the Great Lake itself as well as its inhabitants also did not involve just studying them in the Hogwarts' Library; the Hufflepuff witch was intending to wait for the sun to slightly show so the Giant Squid could bask in it and tada, another article to write about. EXPOSURE! Aurelia is a great fan of only reading the information, but she desires to involve herself—

Her inner monologuing was interrupted when the Ravenclaw witch spoke up again, insisting on her concern about the fall. Aurelia turned to her, her eyebrow quirked inquisitively. How many times does she have to mention that she is fine? A little bruising here and there on the knees, but Aurelia is not concerned about that at all. Can't the girl see that she was uncomfortable that she saw that embarrassing spectacle? It would have been better if this girl mocked and bullied her for it, at least it would have been easier to make the bully meet the business end of her wand. However, this Ravenclaw witch made a worried approach instead. Somehow, that's more embarrassing for Aurelia, the Hufflepuff witch believed that there is nothing more unacceptable except about people feeling pity for you.

Aurelia knows there's nothing wrong with people sympathetic to you. But boy, if it wasn't so irritating.

“Do I look like I broke a bone to you? I'm not screaming right here, am I?” Aurelia couldn't help but snap, her nose crinkled slightly from sneering. Immediately feeling bad, she looked away, breathing heavily. Merlin, calm down. It's not that big of a deal. She could just brush the question away. In fact, she could write it on torn parchment and stick it on her forehead to remind the Ravenclaw witch that she IS fine. It is a bad fall, but it is nothing to be fussy about. “I’m sorry. I'm just frustrated with the weather. I have a quest, you see. I do not mean to take it out on you.” This is perhaps why she had no friends; my, what a temper she has.

The Hufflepuff witch can already feel the intense, observative eyes the witch was giving her even if Aurelia wasn't looking. What a horrible feeling, the concept of being perceived. The fact that the Ravenclaw witch was already forming an impression, an idea of Aurelia in her head is enough to make her feel panicky and elusive; already thinking about flight and never being seen again. For the love of Helga's ingenious craft of food conjuration spells, just let Aurelia Valentine sink within the large pile of snow; or she wished that the fall had left her unconscious. What actually is the psychology behind despising the fact that other people is perceiving you? What a weird fear to have, in Aurelia’s opinion. But it's real and, in fact, unhelpful.

As if unexpected events hadn't been piling on already, the Ravenclaw witch apologised and introduced herself, saying that her name is Juliana Allen as she extended her hand for her to shake. Juliana. Merlin, even her name sounded like she is a socialite or perhaps loved by her mother dearly. What a beautiful name. Her eyebrow quirked slightly when she looked down on Juliana's extended hand. She's not even wearing mittens. Honestly, sometimes people are acting superhumans nowadays, and Aurelia couldn't comprehend how or why. It makes her actually wonder if she is just inherently weak or if this Ravenclaw witch already has learnt particular drying charms.

Attempting an apologetic smile, at least she hope she was exercising it, Aurelia took Juliana’s hand and shook it with an air of importance. “I’m sorry again, Allen. I'm Aurelia, Aurelia Valentine.”

The completely unexpected interaction with the young, slightly snappy witch — though not entirely to Juliana's taste — made her realize, slowly but surely, that she couldn’t be happier in this moment. Just the thought of having a real conversation with another student made her insides flutter with joy. Comfortable or not, she was standing in front of someone who actually answered her question instead of ignoring her. Juliana felt like she was finally making progress in her social life. Whether she had done it with the right approach was a story for another time.

“Do I look like I broke a bone to you? I'm not screaming right here, am I?” Hearing the Hufflepuff’s tone made Juliana freeze. Maybe it was the piercing, unforgiving weather sending shivers down her spine, or perhaps it was simply her instinctive response to such behavior. After all, her father often spoke to her in a similar manner. The key difference was crystal clear: her father did it with intention, while the young witch clearly hadn’t meant any harm. Juliana tried to shake off the discomfort, sliding both hands into the pockets of her coat. As her fingers brushed against the smooth surface of her wand, she gripped it tightly — just in case. Was it for comfort or something else? Defense, perhaps? No, of course not. She was clearly being paranoid.

“I’m sorry. I'm just frustrated with the weather. I have a quest, you see. I do not mean to take it out on you.” Great, she could let go off her wand now. She was safe. But should she respond with something to show she didn’t blame the girl for her mood? After all, who could possibly be cheerful in weather like this? Juliana swallowed the lump forming in her throat and sniffed slightly, the cold taking its toll on her nose. God, she wished she could see herself. She must have looked identical to Rudolph the reindeer.

“I’m sorry again, Allen. I'm Aurelia, Aurelia Valentine.” Oh God, such an authentic name for such an authentic girl. Juliana's mind raced when she realized the name wasn't entirely unfamiliar. She’d read about it. Of course, it meant beauty, brilliance, gold — or something like that. Maybe she was mixing it up with another name, but if not, she could hopefully impress the girl with her knowledge.

"Pleasure to meet you, Aurelia." Even the way the name rolled off her tongue felt satisfying. Wait, was she starting to sound weird again? But who could blame her? Aurelia was a mesmerizing name. Memorable. Letting go off the Hufflepuff's hand, Juliana's gaze shifted back to Aurelia's eyes. She just now noticed that they are deep brown, just like hers. "I think I've read about your name before. I can't quite remember its origin, but if I’m not mistaken, Aurelia means beauty, gold, or brilliance, right? It’s such a beautiful name."

Juliana bit her tongue. Stop talking, stop talking, for God's sake. You're being weird again. She momentarily glanced down at her shoes, feeling the soft crunch of snow beneath them. Taking a deep breath, she let out a sigh that indicated on the turmoil inside her head. She really needed to stop rambling. Looking back up at Aurelia, she finally managed a smile, though it felt slightly forced. "But um . . . It's okay. No need to apologize. I understand that it's unfortunate to meet under these . . . Circumstances."

Juliana cleared her throat, adjusting her now damp wavy hair, trying to act casual. She didn’t want to look like she was overthinking every little detail. "Especially when you're trying to get something done. What's your quest about, if you don’t mind me asking?" She was genuinely curious, though she couldn’t ignore the faint unease still prickling her skin. She couldn’t decide if it was the cold or the conversation — maybe both. Either way, she wanted to keep talking. It felt . . . New. But in a good way. It was strange, how easy it was to slip into a conversation.

When Aurelia snapped accidentally in irritation, Juliana visibly froze in front of her; slowly sliding her hands inside her coat pockets. Guilt, of course, immediately gnawed the Hufflepuff witch’s conscience, especially when Juliana visibly paled too. Aurelia hoped that it was from the blasted cold weather and not because she viciously snapped at her and immediately stepped in the offensive. Puffing out a breath, Aurelia immediately apologised for her behaviour, blaming the weather instead. Her eyebrows creased slightly when the Ravenclaw witch eased slightly, and it made her wonder if Juliana was being bullied within the castle walls because of her defensive reaction.

Her guilt eased slightly when Juliana graciously shook her hand, which made Aurelia smile slightly, especially when the Ravenclaw witch mentioned having been familiar with the origins of her name. “Latin, you mean. Yeah, my mum is quite a fan of the Latin language, intending it to call me ‘the golden one’ or whatnot,” Aurelia's nose crinkled slightly, remembering her mother. It is true, her mother is indeed incredibly fluent in Latin that her written works are almost written in that ancient language. Merlin, what a bitter pill to swallow that her Mum is working throughout the holidays that's why Aurelia is staying over during winter break. Hogwarts is beautiful, of course, but that's not what the Hufflepuff witch was having a tantrum about. She simply missed her mother and her mother clearly doesn't miss her. That's that. THAT'S a bitter admission she doesn't want to think about too.

“Come to think of it, Juliana was derived from Latin too, meaning youthful, Aurelia said, almost muttering it to herself than telling it to the witch in front of her. She slightly pulled her mittens securely around her hand, huffing slightly in exasperation from the cold. Noticing the weather, she brushed the snowflakes collecting on her leather satchel. The only thing that will seal this day into a worst one is if the contents of her satchel get soaked. She didn't want to repeat that corridor disaster back in November. “How about we head back in the castle? It's snowing and you aren't wearing your mittens. You're not immune from hypothermia. No one is, actually, if you think about it.”

Aurelia is already digging her winter boots in the pile of snow to climb the snowy slope when Juliana asked about her quest. Why is she asking, anyway? Well, it's Aurelia's fault for mentioning it in the first place. She wrapped her Hufflepuff scarf more securely around her neck before looking back at Juliana. Noticing her damp hair made Aurelia pat at her own damp curls too, making her cluck in irritation. It'd be hell first before it dries. “Only an exploration. Examining the area and location thoroughly before documenting it. Documenting it means writing an article about it. Don't you think Hogwarts: A History is a bit outdated? I'm meaning to update it; which, in my opinion, will probably take me years,” Aurelia peeled off her winter cloak before slinging her leather satchel again over her coat, then wearing the cloak again. It will keep the snow away from her beloved books. “It’s an academic endeavour, you see. So much has changed since then. Good thing Hogwarts: A History is only an optional read; if it wasn't then misinforming the students will be an issue within the castle.”
