Dear Giddy

Dear Gideon Giddy,

I've been thinking loads about you, you're always on my mind.

I got an A for my divination assignment in the end, so I think next time I will take you up on that offer to help me. Your family has loads of Seers, doesn't it? Divination must be very easy for you.

I wanted to ask you to come to Hogsmeade with me next Saturday, before Quidditch practice, I know I said it'd be after, but I got the times wrong. Practice isn't until midday, so we could spend the whole morning in Hogsmeade together, if you'd like? We'll have to drop by Honeydukes because I'm all out of chocolate frogs.

Giddy, I'd love to learn more about you and your family. Honestly, I'm a bit nervous going out with you, your family is quite famous. I've read so much about them in the papers. Your dad sounds like a lovely guy!

About your family... I didn't want to bring this up but, you have a right to know. There's one place in Hogsmeade we can't go and that's Puddifoot's. Your brother, Mathias, hates me and he got me banned from there (I don't know for how long).

I got into a fight with him which I won, but he couldn't take the L. Then he framed me, saying I stalked Winnie. Honestly? I think he is just jealous. Just because I'm more handsome than him, he felt threatened, but honestly, half the school's more handsome than him, you certainly are. He has a very fragile ego.

He's convinced the staff at Puddifoot's that I did something wrong. It's very petty. I struggle to believe someone like that can be your brother; someone who is so arrogant and self-absorbed while you're so sweet and kind and heroic. But I suppose you don't get to pick your family. You know what they say about big people with big egos, right? They're always compensating for something. I reckon he's got something very small and flabby down there that he's trying to make up for.

Thankfully I know that you won't believe him. You know - better than most - that I don't even like girls! I mean, I get along with them, I just don't like them in that special way, if you know what I mean. So why would I be stalking Winnie? Mathias is just insecure.

Sorry, I hope it's not weird that I go off on your brother, but I just thought you should know that we don't get along before you... get to know me better.

Will I see you at the Three Broomsticks on Saturday the 14th, at 10 in the morning?

Loads of hugs,

Finn.

Dear Giddy
Dear Finn,

You’ve been thinking about me? How sweet! I can’t lie—it’s lovely knowing I’ve been on your mind. You have a way of making a person feel special, you know that? You probably don't, but that is OK. It can be my job to remind you!

An A in Divination? That’s amazing! I’m so proud of you. See, I told you that you were so very smart. I’d be happy to help next time. Divination is sort of a family specialty, though I wouldn’t say it’s easy. It’s like peeking through a foggy window—sometimes you see something useful, and sometimes it’s just smudges! Sometimes you see sad things and know that something will make you cry, but you have to smile anyways. Just know, when you know something real bad is going to happen, it just means you need to make happy memories now. That is why I am going to miss you. Still, with you being so clever, I’m sure you’d pick up whatever you set your mind to in no time.

Hogsmeade on Saturday sounds perfect. Spending a morning with you before Quidditch practice sounds like just the thing I need. And Honeydukes? Say no more. I’ve been craving chocolate frogs too! I might even snag a few sugar quills—those are one of my favorites.

I really don’t know what to say about all that family stuff. Mathias is... complicated. I’m sure he had his reasons, even if they don’t make sense to you. They do not always make sense to me either. He’s not as bad as you think, but he’s certainly... intense. Still, I hate that he’s made things so awkward for you. Puddifoot’s isn’t really my style anyway, so let’s not waste time worrying about it.

Thank you for saying such kind things about me—it really means a lot. You’re not so bad yourself, Finn. Actually, I think you’re quite wonderful.

And don’t worry about the Winnie thing. I believe you. I mean, you don’t strike me as the stalking type, and I definitely get what you mean about not liking girls in that way. People can be so quick to jump to conclusions, can’t they? It’s a shame they can’t see the good in you like I do.

So yes, you’ll absolutely see me at the Three Broomsticks on Saturday. Ten in the morning sharp. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I have been preparing for it for some time. I’m looking forward to spending some time with you, Finn—it’ll be nice to get to know you and maybe some of your friends even better.

Sending hugs right back,
Your Giddy

P.S. Don’t let Mathias get to you. You’ve got nothing to prove to him—or anyone else for that matter.
