The Search
"Dragons?" Mahlioz had to think about the question. "Well, yes, I think so. But, well. It's sort of complicated." She wasn't as interested in dragons as she was in, say, swords or mythology. It was more of a side-interest, something that came with her obsession with fantasy. But that was where things got a little weird, because Mahlioz lived in what some might consider a fantasy world. Magic and spells and creatures and dragons were rather common.

"I prefer dragons that don't actually exist? The kind muggles write about. Since they don't know about real dragons, they're able to come up with their own stuff which I find so much cooler. I'm not sure why, exactly. Maybe because I find it more creative?" It was, in that way, more fantasy-like than books that had dragons that existed. "Hah, it's such a weird thing for me to say. Usually I'm all about logic and reality and things making sense. I'm sure if I did more research on real dragons I'd like them a whole lot more, but for now, I'm sticking to my fantasy books."
The dragon section of the library was rather large, and it was almost amusing that it had both non-fiction and fiction sub-sections. There was a sadly small amount of books with purple dragons (though they were objectively so much more awesome) but none of them seemed to be sporting any witchy-looking people. There was one with a fairy, though, which Mahlioz discreetly picked up because it couldn't hurt to have one more book to read. "What kinds of books do you prefer? Are they also dragon-filled?"

Mahlioz explained that rather than being interested in the real dragons that they learned about in class, they were more interested in fictional dragons. The redhead nodded. "That makes sense. There are so many different magic systems and creative, mystical places that people come up with that are so fascinating," she agreed. She remembered reading Tolkien books with her siblings, when they were younger, and they all laughed a little bit at his interpretations of creatures that actually existed, like wizards and dragons and trolls and animagi (though he wasn't called an animagus in the books). Rose always wondered how muggles came to learn about these real creatures, despite the fact that they didn't believe they existed. Instead, they wrote beautiful stories about what they thought the creatures were like.
No, dragons didn't talk in reality, not like they did in Tolkien's books. But wouldn't that be cool?
Rose nodded. "Yeah, some of them! Though most of the books I read that have dragons in them are information regarding all creatures. I don't know if I've shared this with you before, but after Hogwarts, I want to do something to do with magizoology. Whether that's being an actual magizoologist or a dragonologist, or something else with magical creatures, I don't know yet, but it just fascinates me." Rose looked at the book Mahlioz had picked up for a moment, too. "Other than research about cool stuff, I also read a lot of fiction, and pretty much all types- science fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy... I think we talked about the Lunar Chronicles when we first met at that errand event? That's one of my favorite series." Most of the books she read, though, she preferred for them to make her think. Some were by muggle authors, and some by wizards or witches, but if she opened a book and it was all romance fluff, she was likely to be quick to abandon it. She wanted a book, usually, to make her need to read the next part, to be so involved with the complex characters that she couldn't help but read one more chapter. (And, usually, one more was never truly one more.) She wanted the words to hit hard- she guessed it was kind of like small talk, versus deep conversation. Rose's favorite books were the equivalent of deep conversation in that sense.
The redhead sighed. "I'm not sure if we're going to be able to find the book again. Maybe there's some sort of catalog and the title will jog your memory? Or maybe the librarian knows," She looked down the long rows of books, seeing the light slowly fading from the windows as the sun approached the horizon. "We should probably head to dinner soon, though," she suggested.

Rose shared that she was interested in magizoology, and that she wanted to go into it after she left Hogwarts. Mahlioz nodded enthusiastically. Honestly, Rose seemed the type, with how much she loved animals, what with Chaska and becoming an animagus. "That's really cool! My mom's a magizoologist, actually, so I know some of the ropes a little bit. I could definitely see you doing some of the stuff she does. She's around dragons all the time."

Rose seemed to like many of the same genres as Mahlioz, which was unsurprising - fantasy and sci-fi were obviously superior. And honestly, realistic or historical fiction was pretty good too, when Mahlioz put aside her obsession with magical otherworldly places. "Ah, I still haven't read that! I really need to - if not for the fact that you liked it, at least for your costume last year. It definitely convinced me." Perhaps they would check the first book out on the way out of the library. If ever they found their godsdang book.
Speaking of which, the two had arrived at a part of the library that was ringing a bell. Mahlioz had definitely been here recently, but couldn't remember what they had been doing. And perhaps that was a good sign, because it meant she had been distracted enough to maybe put down her book?
Rose was in the middle of saying something when Mahlioz finally spotted it, a dark blue cover with a blond wix of some sort on the front and a magnificent purple dragon. Its name was The Search, which was rather ironic. They held it up triumphantly just as Rose was looking back from a row of books mentioning something to do with dinner.
"I found it!" They grinned. "Sorry, I zoned out on you, what were you saying? Yeah, actually, dinner sounds good." The third year stopped to admire her hard-earned book again. "Thank you so much for helping me find it! And for hanging out with me. Give me one second, I'm gonna go get the first Lunar Chronicles book and I'll follow you out."
