Charms was a class Anella liked well enough, it often felt like learning little card tricks to her.
Jealousy isn't really a trait Anne possessed, though she was envious of how well some of the other kids got their wands to light up so bright. Her attempt bore a flickering little spark, reminiscent of a lightbulb that's about to give up, die out. She sighed, setting her wand down to take a breather, looking around the classroom for inspiration on what to do differently. Her eye was caught by a girl who looked a lot like her, with long blonde hair and laser sharp focus on her face. She was a ravenclaws, Anella noticed, and then remembered she had her next class with ravenclaws too. Anella never really spared a thought for the ravens – when her father gave her the rundown of the Hogwarts houses, she was convinced she’d be a gryffindor. Fate had other plans, but she never expected to be a part of the blue and bronze. She heard they were clever, a trait Anne couldn’t identify with no matter how much her father claimed clever was a “broad term that doesn’t mean anything”.
Anella was snapped out of her thoughts by the loud packing up of her classmates, an indication that class had been dismissed while she wasn’t mentally present. She quickly stuffed her book into her leather bag, her wand into her pocket. Her bag was her pride and joy – a thrifted leather messenger, dark wash with her name embroidered on the flap. It had little stars, simple and yellow, all over. Some embroidered, some painted. She loved it from the second she got it, and took any opportunity to show it off. She slings it over her head, pulls out her hood from underneath and puts her hair up, before pushing through the crowd of her housemates to catch up to the mysterious ravenclaw. Her footsteps were long, courtesy of her tall stature, and determined, undisturbed by the herd of children around her.
Only when she was walking a couple steps behind the girl did she grow shy, thinking about how to approach her. What if she ends up talking too much again? Anella scratched her cheek in worry, her hand falling back to rest on her neck for a second, before falling down to hold her back.
“Hey, what’s your name?” She caught up to the ravenclaw after a few seconds, looking down at the blue-eyed girl with curiosity and a tiny bit of sheepishness. But how else could she approach her? That’s how she made all of her friends back in London, although she hasn’t done it in years now. She walked in step with the girl, slowing down a lot to the point that her modest ponytail barely moved as she walked. A little braid bounced on one side of her face, a habit she usually did when the herbology professor was droning on and on, like this morning, for example.

| xxxxxxxx | The words calligraphed on the page were blurry, as Elena rubbed her eyes, trying to give sense to what she was reading. Charms were one of her favourite class, and she always excelled in everything she did. Besides today, as her eyes had apparently decided. Giving up on figuring out the lash phrases of the heavy book, she closed it with an annoyed yet quiet slam, leaning back in her chair. The class was busy, filled with laughter and the familiar sound of quills scratching the paper. Distractingly looking at her various classmates, she let her mind wandered as the ticking clock counted the seconds that kept her from the end of the lesson. A pair of green eyes caught her attention at the other end of the classroom, eyes that belonged to a young girl whose gaze had already turned away. A badger, apparently - even without the bright yellow adorning her robes, the girl had that solar energy often typical of the Hufflepuffs. She had few interactions with this house, seemingly preferring the company of snakes or lions. Badgers had a disturbing way of bringing the young girl's mouth to spill what she kept secret, their joyful nature piercing through her carefully crafted walls. Her empathy, ability that allowed her to read others like an open book, found a match in almost every Hufflepuff she had met, and she didn't liked being psychoanalyzed. But maybe was she overthinking this a little. She shook her head, her thoughts quieting, as the bell rang loudly. Pushing her books in her bag, before passing it on one shoulder, she took a last look before joining the crowd of exiting students. Her height could be considered a disadvantage, but Elena had learned to slip between the packed bodies, and she soon found her way out of the flood. The next class was on the opposite side of the castle. A true wonder. Signing, the blonde haired girl was about to turn right when a soft voice reached her ears. She glanced half way, unsure if she was the one concerned, her navy blue eyes searching for the origin of the voice. They met striking emeralds, circled by a constellation of freckles. The girl's golden hair was held up in a ponytail, hand firmly wrapped around a seemingly diy messenger bag. Elena tilted her head up - the girl was outrageously tall - before blinking twice, her brain going backward to figure out what was the question. "Oh," she said with an apologetic smile. "I'm Elena, Elena Clark. I.. don't believe we met ?" Still walking, the two girls were now in sync, giving the raven more time to detail her new companion. After a few seconds of analysis, she declared she had never seen this girl before, and categorised her friendly acquaintance - she didn't seemed like she wanted to ask Elena something, just talking. Socialising. Pure joy. She washed the inner sarcasm away. This human being seemed made of pure sunlight, making her strangely nostalgic. She had that unreal aura of things once lost, childhood laughter, the end of the spring, a warm and buzzing feeling. She seemed restless, always fidgeting, eager to live. A true breeze of fresh air. As they walked, she pushed her blonde locks behind her shoulder, and glanced at a a fork. "Hey," she called the lively Hufflepuff. "This way." The corridor she was pointing at dragged them away from the massive crowd - a shortcut she had spotted during those countless nights she spent exploring the castle, shadows swirling at her feet. She glanced at her watch, noting the time they had left. Ten minutes to go on the other side of the castle. I can do it in six. |

The young girl’s eyes lost their spirit for a moment, for she thought that the girl was plainly judging her when she initially ignored her question. A few seconds later, though, she smiles softly again, comforted by Elena’s simple answer. She was afraid she scared her off for a second. The girl was pretty – she had this long blonde hair that looked way softer than Anne’s, and eyes that profiled Anella like she was a mystery – a case to be solved. Was it a little disconcerting? Yeah, but that sort of behaviour was to be expected in ravens. She decides to stretch as she walks, her arms sore from sitting all day. At least this next class was their last of the day – she had no clue how the older kids do more. Four classes a day was perfectly acceptable. Her train of thought was interrupted by the voice of the smaller girl she had just approached, going in a direction opposite to the one all of the peers were heading. Anella stood for a moment, mid stretch, her gangly arms behind her back, fully extended. Yeah, following strange girl into even stranger hallways was always a good idea. She catches up to Elena, humming a nod of agreement. Then, as her eyes flicker around the new path she was headed. embarrassment strikes her. She had gone a full minute, and forgot to introduce herself yet.
“Elena, I’m Anella. My surname is Vaughn. Introducing myself completely escaped me a minute ago, I’m sorry.” Her hand is covering her mouth, but a smile forcefully fighting becoming a frown was what the hand was hiding. “I’m so sorry.” Anella says, through a humbled laugh, looking away. The shorter girl *could* be stuck up who wouldn’t accept her apology – but if Annes reading of her was correct – she would probably be nice enough to accept the apology and move on.
Her hand is bent at the elbow, offered to Elena to shake. This was a habit that Anella started picking up at Hogwarts – which honestly sucked, since she had just learned how to dab people up last year. That was way cooler than this… serious handshake business kids at Hogwarts did. They were eleven, for crying out loud! But better not attempt a dab up with a pureblood, she thought, or they might think she’s a brute trying to attack them. The hand that was covering her mouth falls limp at her side, at the same time steadying the ever bouncing bag on her hip. Her teeth were hidden by tightly pressed lips - her flustered but hopeful smile now shown in its full edition.
“Yeah, um, we haven’t actually met before.” Anella says, shrugging. “I just saw you in Charms and grew curious. Figured – we have the next class together so why not approach you, you capish?” She looked at the winding hallway they were, well, she was exploring for the first time. Elena seemed as sure in her steps as a seventh year would be, her shiny loafers holding a steady rhythm against the aged floor. “Is this some kind of a shortcut, Elena?” Anella questioned, her eyes flicking from one corner to the next.

| xxxxxxxx | Her footsteps echoed loudly on the marble floor, as the two girls kept heading at a fast pace towards their next class. The Hufflepuff seemed to be lost in her thoughts, and only nodded when Elena's question interrupted her mid-stretch. The raven was trying to remember the lesson she had studied this morning, as their teacher was keen to surprise tests. She twisted the ring on her index finger, a heavy and beautiful silver ring, with a lepidolite - a dark blue stone that reflected different colours depending on what light it catches. It was her favourite stone, and she had several necklaces or bracelets adorned with this shiny navy rock. She liked how it appearance changed based on the observer. Some of her friends swore it looked green-ish, others saw purple or even black reflections. A strange stone, which nobody could define. She liked the sound of that. She snapped out of her thoughts when the lovely voice of the badger rose again, filled with a hint of worry. Elena blinked, before chuckling. "Don't worry," she smiled, waving her hand. "I in fact hadn't noticed, and even if I did I can perfectly understand being lost in thoughts." It happened to her enough times. Usually people would nudge her or repeat what they just said, some might get offended or find her distant and strange. "I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Anella," she said, shaking the extended hand. The girl's smile was wider than before - Elena in fact wondered how possible it was to smile that large. She felt like a ray of sunshine in a particularly beautiful field. Her hand was hot - or maybe hers was freezing. The blonde haired girl never knew why her fingers always felt like they were literal ice cubes, no matter the season. What was an advantage in summer would become a nightmare in winter, hands hurting from how frozen they were. Mittens saved her life more than once, and she had made poking her friends with her ice cold fingers a game. But it still felt strange. Listening with a distracted ear Anella rambling about why and how she decided to approach her, she took swift turns throughout the corridors, keeping an eye on her watch. Nine. With a little luck, they might even be the first one to arrive, given how everyone followed the main path. "It is," she answered, glancing back to her new acquaintance. Now thinking of it, this Hufflepuff had no self preservation instinct. The Ravenclaw would never be caught following a stranger down a unknown road, let alone a darkly lit corridor. She seemed too quick to trust for her own good, or perhaps too optimistic. Her mom would have loved her. She would have loved anyone, to be fair, but Anella reminded the young girl of her dear mother. Happy-go-lucky, fully convinced everyone has good intentions. Carefree. Ignoring the bitter sense of envy rushing through her veins, she tugged a golden strand behind her ear. "It should lead us straight to the classroom if we take-," she continued, taking a swift turn left, "-this way." One minute and a half had passed. Glancing back a second time, she hesitated to make small talk. Not one of her strengths, but a skill she had managed to overcome. Almost. "So, Miss Vaughn," she smiled, slowing down her pace. "How do you like Howgarts ?" She seemed the chatty kind, so a simple question should unfold the conversation. At least that was the plan. |

Anella’s eyes flashed with the thoughtfulness of a woman much older than she, an expression her companion seemed to wear with the same ease that she wore her own skin with. Quiet filled a few seconds after Elena had asked the question, but the simple answer came out with confidence.
“Yeah.” Anella nodded softly, “I like it well enough.” She tucks a hair behind her head, taking a deep breath while thinking of a follow up. She looked back to Elena, before smiling reassuringly, or at least she hoped it looked like that. “I’m sure we haven’t gotten to the good part just yet, but we will.” She concludes, and maybe it sounds more like a wish than the truth, but optimism couldn’t hurt her in the quiet hallway of Hogwarts, in the company of a near-stranger. It could hurt, though, she knew it's wrath of surprises and letdowns. Even when it seemed logical, the calm could always be the one before a storm. But that wouldn’t stop her from believing in good opportunities, like befriending this sweet girl.
“How about you, Elena? Is this place any good to you?” She raised a playful eyebrow, a smirk like grin on her face following up her question. In her head she noted the girl being a ravenclaw, and the classic nerd stereotype of them popped up in her head. She knew that house stereotypes were dumb, and hell, Anella barely fit into her own house. Elena probably disliked studying as much as any other kid their age, but was focused on getting good grades and such. Anella tried to be too, but most times she just brute forced herself through her lessons instead of actual focus. But potions got her interested. An odd subject, one she never would’ve thought she’d liked, but it was fun. And the teacher was caring, despite being strict. She sure knew her stuff. Oh, but the thing she hated the most were the kids that forced themselves to be bubbly just because they’re in the ever damned badger house, or when other houses are surprised not all of them are pushovers despite their loyalty and hard work. That was just plain rude, in her humble opinion.
She walked that hall with a wanderer’s step, of someone unsure but curious and confident enough to go where little follow. She felt as if that step bled over into her new companionship with Elena, a lonely walk into the dark, unsure of what corner holds what, but she feels something’s waiting for her at the end. And she’s not scared of it.
It’s hard to be scared of anything when you're a monster yourself. Not many horrors faze you when your own body goes through a phase of monstrosity every so often.
A bloodhound was still a dog. One that would walk into the fire if it was warm, if it didn’t know better. Anella didn’t know better, no, not yet. But Anella was strange in her own way, matching the footprints of this strange girl instead of the crowd. A magnet for trouble, as her father would say with an exhausted and often tragic undertone to his smile.

xxxxxxxx It was safe to say Elena was rater baffled by her new companion's ability of immediately trusting a complete stranger. The way the badger trotted next to her reminded her of a stray dog her mother had smitten herself with. A poor thing, beaten to a near death by his previous owners. Victoria saw it struggling to walk on the sidewalk, and opened her car door. The stray jumped inside without thinking twice. Luckily for Winston, Elena's mother was an angel sent to earth but had it been anyone else, he might not have seen the next sunrise. He was instead met with food and a warm blanket, until Vic resigned herself to call a local shelter.
Cold water feels warm to freezing hands.
Althought Anella's behavior resembled Winston's blind faith in human's inherent goodness, Elena couldn't say she dissociated herself completely from its way of thinking. The girl's overwhelming desire to rescue and comfort strays, matched with a deeply rooted fear of being left behind, had often led her to accept and push her non-existent boundaries at the sole profit of the person she wished to please.
Am I not enough for you ?
Blinking those thoughts away - she really need to get a hold on herself and her mind - Elena checked her watch to give herself a countenance. "Eight minutes left," she informed her new comrade.
Anella's answer didn't really surprised the young raven, but perhaps was she falling into house stereotypes. Nodding, she replied with the same, yet somewhat toned down excitment, "Indeed. There's only the best to come." She sincerely believed it, as the year was just begining. The fidgety aspect of Anella amused her greatly, and she wondered how such an hyperactive person could sit still in class without having the urge to scream and throw everything on the ground. But perhaps that had yet to happen. Hiding a smile, she took a moment to think about her response.
"I do," she smiled. "Wether the people or the school, both are great. But as you said, the year is just starting."
