The second class ended, Emily bolted from one end of the school grounds to the next; coming all the way from Herbology, pass the sea of students just as eager to escape their classes as she was, to then fly up the staircases into the Common Room and slide all the way back down again with a wrapped up gift in her hand.

Emily couldn't express the excitement she had when Sage asked her if she would spend the afternoon celebrating the latter's birthday. Sage went to her joint party with Ophelia, so in one sense Emily was returning the favour, but it went much further than repaying any old favour - if that's what they could even call it. Sage was Emily's Hufflebuddy in her book, so naturally she would be beckoned to the call of hanging out with such lovely company.

Emily would also be wanting to properly congratulate Sage on becoming one of the new Hufflepuff Prefects. After initially being mildly salty over losing candidacy as the next Prefect, Emily then realised how much better suited Sage would be for the role. And after coming to that realisation, Emily then decided she didn't want to be Prefect at all. Ultimately, Sage was perfect for the spot, though that did meant their time together became rather strained due to the responsibilities that demanded of her.

The gift she had tucked under her arm would then serve as a congratulatory present on both birthday and Prefect grounds.

Above all, Emily just wanted to hang out with her again.

So when she spotted Sage at the designated spot, she hurried her pace, a large excited grin paved across her face.

"There she is! Happy birthday, miss Prefect!"

A breeze flew past Sage, tossing her hair all about. She squinted out into the courtyard, looking for her friends who were hopefully on their way. She couldn't wait to celebrate.

And there was Emily! She was smiling, and so was Sage. The first arrival. Thank God she hadn't forgotten!

"Emily! Hi! Oh, thanks! Trust me, it was a bit of a shock they chose me, but I'm happy to be prefect!" She patted the spot next to her for Emily to sit. "I, uh, made a cake for us? It's probably not going to be the best tasting thing ever, but I tried." She laughed, pointing at the messy looking cake she'd thrown together.

Sage didn't feel thirteen yet. She was a teenager, shouldn't she feel some special feeling in knowing she was another year older, than batch more wise than last year? But she felt no significant knowledge hitting at being another year older. She just felt like Sage.

"You're already thirteen! Tell me, any cool teenage tips I need to know to prepare myself?" She laughed, even though it wasn't particularly funny.

She would look back out into the courtyard after Emily's reply, squinting, as she had before, to try and see if her other friends were on their way in, not that she wasn't enjoying Emily's company.

"The others should be on their way in soon! It's you, Reyna, Brookline, and Cass."

Emily came dancing over towards Sage where she gave her a quick birthday snug... Because of course! Afterwards she handed over the medium-sized gift that she had been careful not to muss up on her way down to meet her. Emily was actually pretty excited to see the look on Sage's face once she'd open it; inside was a collage of a field of sunflowers created through scraps of coloured paper and discarded magazines, as well as some pressed flower petals to give it "authenticité".

She looked around to see she was the only one to turn up... So far! And after Sage gave a brief rundown of the guest list, Emily was nodding approvingly. Cass was another fine choice for Prefecture. A natural decision given their contributions to the sports events. It would be great to see Reyna again properly, since it had been a while since their little creature comforts with Mylo. And Brookie! Emily wouldn't miss a day without catching up with her. Positivity spreaders like her were always a gem to talk to.

When Sage mentioned cake, Emily grinned. "Hehe! I bet it'll taste great! Besides, a little mess is proof that a lot of heart went into it!"

Sage was already showing signs of what Emily did when she turned thirteen a while back and laughed along with her. "To be honest, it doesn't really feel like you get any older no matter how big the number gets. I mean, I still feel like I'm nine years old even though I'm clearly not. But I guess that's the thing about being a young teen... The world shows a lot more colour to us, and feels bigger than being eleven or twelve... So we spend a lot longer trying to navigate through it and learn more for ourselves."

Ah. Emily was doing it again. Overthinking it, yet it was just how her thought pattern was responding to Sage's question. Trust Hufflepuff's most enthusiastic thinker and to think so much! She laughed at the realisation as she stopped herself to breathe.

Hopefully the others would get there soon before Emily would talk Sage's legs off. For better or for worse!

A Welsh Ravenclaw skipped round the drafty school, awaiting for boredom to cease and for the late cool afternoon to bring it’s annual orange sunset. Bright as an
gold-pink orange sunsets usually were, and Brookline waited for the time to cease as well. She was invited to her friend’s birthday party; she had no idea how was coming but she hoped people she knew was. She knew it was after class, but she wonder what gift she shall get Sage. Perhaps something from Hogsmeade? Or a book, or a quill? Or maybe something for her kitten, Casey?

Once Brookline made it back to her dorm-room, she pulled on a dark green sweater dress with black tights. She decided to put a dark purple- almost black- cloak on over it and then found some unopened chocolate frogs and a small strawberries and cream shortcake in her trunk she had gotten out in Hogdmeade in yesterday. Then digging out the birthstone bracelet, with a citrine stone charm that looked like liquid amber. Brookline seen it a while ago, and thought of the delightful Hufflepuff.

Putting each item in a small individual decorative boxes, she wrapped each box, smacking a yellow bow on each box. Brookline then placed all three in a birthday bag, finishing it with tissue paper and yet another yellow bow. Then with a beaming grin, she hoped Sage would like her gift.

Entering the courtyard, the Welsh Ravenclaw saw two figures. It was Sage and Emily. Once she got closer, she waved with her right hand. “Hey birthday girl! Ooh, and hi Emmy!”

Before the arrival of the others, Sage grinned at the cake comment. "I've never had a talent for baking, that's always been Kora's job." She chuckled at the thought of Kora covered in flour like that one year's kitchen incident.

She went silent at the wise words of age and feeling it. God, was she really a teenager already? It didn't feel like it. she cleared her throat and dropped the thought, poking Emily on the shoulder. "When'd you get so smart?"

The appearance of two more friends put a wider smile on Sage's face. She took a few steps away to wave at Brookline and Reyna. "Hi! So glad you all could come! Thank you!"

She scanned the area, making a count in her head of those who had turned up for her. "Looks like we're just waiting on Cass! I've baked us a cake, though I wasn't sure if there were any dietary restrictions so I apologize ahead of time, and also for what is going to be an awful taste."

She smiled at her friends, so glad she had the opportunity to see them on her birthday. She'd sent off an owl to Kora and Cassie to tell them about it later after the party. Part of her was sad to know she wouldn't see them on her birthday, but school was too important to leave for one day.

"Reyna and Emily, I know you're both thirteen, but what about you, Brookline? It's crazy that all- or most- of us are teenagers already!"

What was late but another word for fashionably on time? It wasn't particularly fashionable to be late to someones birthday party, but Cass really hadn't meant to. It wasn't their fault at all. They blamed the "squid". You see, they had meant to get there. Get there super fast in fact. If they couldn't give the Hufflepuff prefect a detention, at least they could give her a birthday present. Their late night stand off was actually not the weirdest way they had made a friend. But back to their excuse ordeal that had meant they spent like 20 minutes with their nose pressed against the common room windows. You see, they had seen a celebrity. It was the giant squid! Or, as time would reveal, a really ugly tiny silver fish that had just looked giant and squid like from the corner of their eye. Cass was very mad at that fish now. How dare it both fool them and make them not on time to such an important occasion! One day, they would get their revenge (they were extremely likely to forget about this in under a week).

As they ran towards the courtyard as fast as they could get their short legs to go, they clutched a small bag in their arms. It was a fairly nice bag, a pretty blue cloth with little bronze buttons. But what was even cooler was what was inside. A rock! But not just a boring rock from the floor. This was a boring rock from a store that moved. A pet rock! What better present could you ask for? Hopefully Sage would love it. The bag was also part of the gift as well, in case she turned out to hate rocks or some nonsense. "SAGGGEEEEE" they called out as they got closer "Happy Birthday!". Sliding to a stop with the bag outstretched, they proudly presented their gift to her. "I'm so sorry I'm late" they said "But I saw the squid! Only it wasn't really the squid, it was a liar. But that's not important. Happy birthday!".

The other girls there weren't exactly strangers to them either. All girls. Maybe they should have worn a wig to blend in better. Oh well, too late now. "Hi Emily! Hi Brookline! Hi other person!" they said. It was nice to see that they recognised some of the friends-of-Sage. They wondered if they were the last to arrive. Whoops. Again, they blamed the "squid". How dare that fish keep them away from such an important event.

Sage was always so knowledgeable, it was hard to think she would ever come to Emily looking for advice. The latter grinned when Sage playfully poked her shoulder. "I'm pretty sure that's just protocol for growing up, Miss Prefect!" she laughed.

Halfway through their conversation, more friendly faces turned up. The first was Brookie, skipping towards her and Sage. Emily bounded over and hugged her birdie buddy when she was close enough. "Hello, hello! Here to celebrate too, I see!"

The next to arrive was Reyna. Emily had been seeing more of her more frequently. Not that, that was a bad thing! Reyna was a lovely girl! No Genie today though by the looks of it. Oh well. Emily would get the chance to snuggle Reyna's cat another time. She gave the incoming Huffle a friendly wave as she approached the group.

The third and final face to arrive was Cass Ito, one of the young gun Slytherin Prefects. With them here, Emily couldn't help but joke silently that this party was becoming half a birthday celebration, half Prefect business meeting. All the same though, it was nice to see Prefects in a casual environment like this. Times like this were probably scarce for both Cass and Sage now, given the multitude of responsibilities they had on their shoulders these days. Emily extended more friendly welcomes to Cass when they sped over to the group.

With everyone here and showing off their gifts to Sage, Emily finally presented hers, a yellow and orange decorated journal where Sage could doodle and draft notes on as much as she'd like, to really commit herself to the oxymoron of Casual Prefect. The book wasn't overly large but there was still a bit of weight to it and its huge volume of pages.

"Here's to being thirteen, Sage!"

Protocol for growing up, as Emily called it, was absolutely terrifying. Just think about it, in a handful of years she'd be done at Hogwarts, an adult. Did she feel prepared? You can bet she didn't.

It was nice to see everyone greeting each other, no visible tension present. This was nice, simple. This was exactly the type of party she wished she had last year.

And the party was complete as Cass showed! Sage waved at Cass, inviting them to join her group of other party friends. "Hi! No worries, we waited for you! I'm so glad you could make it!" Sage and Cass had actually had a funny meeting. Sage was familiar with them in the sense she'd seen them around, not really taking the time to speak, and then they tried to give the other detention during their patrols! That had been a fun meeting, probably the most random of her time at Hogwarts so far.

"Whoa, a liar squid? That's still cool!" She laughed, smiling at randomness of finding a liar squid. "Thank you so much!" She accepted the bag they handed her. "That's Reyna! She's a year older than us, we like to run together! Reyna, this is Cass!"

Cass's present had Sage smiling wide, a rock pet! Emily handed her a beautiful journal that added to her grin. Both beautiful gifts that Sage would be sure to take good care of. "Oh, they're wonderful! Thank you!"

Imagine the biggest, happiest smile in the world. Now imagine that on Sage's face and you had the happiest birthday girl ever. Everything was perfect. She really loved this moment with her friends.

She reached for the cake. "I present this baking disaster. If we're all ready for cake we could start eating it?" she offered to her friends. Really if she poisoned none of them she would consider it a success.
