It had been a couple of days since Gem was able to explore the school some more, occupied with other things-- meaning, in short, had no confidence to be anywhere except the library, hiding himself behind a book he wasn't even actually reading. Now, he wandered around what he guessed was the Small Hall, peering at the paintings curiously, his eyes widening briefly whenever they moved. Nothing out of the ordinary, he thought, clicking his tongue inside his head, since it was a world of magic, after all.

His shoes clicked lightly against the stones, stopping only when he found a vacant end of the wall, sliding back down, plopping in the spot with a huff. To get more comfortable, (or, about as comfortable as you could possibly be sitting on literal stones) he pulled his knees up to his chest, wrapping his arms around his legs securely, taking up as little space as he possibly could.
He never liked getting accustomed to new environments, especially when he felt like he had no one to speak to. He'd hardly gotten a goodbye from his parents, much less any owls from them or anyone else. His cousin was here and another was on her way, sure, but for now, he felt like he didn't belong. That was another feeling he didn't like, but who truly did? For some people it was a new start, some brand-spanking-new friends-- or maybe it wasn't that at all, it was them being able to see old friends, people they'd met, old professors... Well, to think Gem had an optimistic view on anything was ludicrous!

I am a nihilist, he thought, grinning at his usage of the word. He'd read it in the dictionary sometime last month, but he'd never found the right time to use it; but here it was, put on a silver platter right before him. While the proper use of the word (in his head, mind you) brought him momentary joy, it didn't do much for him a couple of seconds later when he was brought back down to earth, watching kids chatter, talk, laugh, and sit together. He exhaled, turning his head to look at the burning fire, the painting of Professor Dumbledore hanging up over it. You know, he should come up with a few phrases to keep himself up. He'd call it WWDD; What Would Dumbledore Do? Again, he was quite chuffed at his own joke, not very slickly grinning to himself. He was busy patting himself on the back when he saw some kid running across the hall, tripping over and falling flat on their face. Gem's eyes went big, repositioning himself up on his knees, ready to help them if needed-- well, they were moving, but-

"Hell're you lookin' at, bruv?"

If it was atomically possible for Gem's eyes to get bigger, they would. He leaned back against the wall again, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly.

"Wos just concerned, mate, no need ta get violent-- aye, your nose, s' bleeding-"

"Thanks fer tha', Sherlock. I'll be sure to look fer you whenever my common sense fails meh, how's that?"

Gem scrunched his nose up, looking at the kid's gross-looking face, vexed at how someone who barely knew you could be so ugly and rude on very first impression. Not a good look, he had to admit.

"Well, if yer gonna be so cocky, why don't'cha joost-"

"Bugger off, man. Don't even try it."

If there was anything Gem hated more than being interrupted, it was being interrupted by a total arsehole. He watched him get up, his eyes narrowing in contempt. I'll get you, catch you off guard. I swear, I-

Gem stopped his own train of thought when he felt someone move beside him, lifting his eyebrows, suddenly feeling shy. How many people watched that ordeal go down? Did he really want to know? Probably not. Christ, he probably just blew the chances of making a friend in here. Well, he thought, at least it's a good place to sulk.

What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.

Charlotte does not have an easy time making friends.
That was just the good and simple truth of it. It's like a damn family trait, it is..., she often thinks. She knows her cousin is hopeless at it too, albeit it was for a different reason. Her reason was that she didn't have a very inviting face. She often looked stony, or like she was up to no good (which she usually wasn't) and it drove people away. She figured Gem's reason is that he's horrible at talking so he just avoids it.

The light step of her feet made their way to the small hall. Peering around the room, she was people doing their homework and laughing with their friends. She smiled lightly and found a table to sit at. She'd just recently been to the library and checked out a couple books. She normally sped through books, her reading speed was fast and she found the books here were actually interesting. Well, it was a wizarding school after all. She finally had the resources to learn about this stuff on her own, and it was fascinating.
Although she did like to read, she also liked to have fun. Not fun like 'Oh! Let's go to my house for my birthday party!" fun... No, she liked to get into trouble. It was never anything too bad... just watching things happen, not doing anything about said things happening... Maybe setting some things on fire... Maybe messing with her cousins... It really just depended on her mood.

She was pulled away from her book when she heard crashing on the floor, turning quickly to see what had happened. Upon seeing the boy on the floor, she started giggling to herself, looking at the blood dripping down from his nose. She looked at little further to see Gem looking at him with wide eyes. It seemed like his signature face.
But then the boys started speaking to each other, her smile dropping as she thought a conflict was going to break out.

"Alright, leave 'im alone, he didn't do anythin'" She said, waving off the other kid and walking over to Gem. If there was one thing Charlotte didn't like, it was seeing her loved ones getting hurt. That was her job.
She sunk down on the floor next to him and laughed a little bit, leaning her head on his shoulder "How's tha' for making friends," She chuckled, shoving him a little bit.

Gem hadn't expected to be relieved to see his meanest cousin in a situation like this, but he certainly was. He huffed, crossing his arms when he felt her shove him off to the side a bit. Well, the loneliness was alleviated, that was for sure. He could never bring himself to feel quite forsaken whenever Charlotte was around, she truly knew how to make him smile.

"I could've kicked his arse, Charlotte. Really, I could've caught him off guard, punted 'im around a bit, I mean it! You saw 'ow he mouthed me off... well, I'll show him. Show him real-" He stopped himself, sort of deflating in his spot when the pointlessness of rambling reached him. He leaned his head back, lightly knocking it against the wall, staying quiet for a bit so he could collect his thoughts. "It's hard makin' friends 'ere, I dunno if it's me, or everyone else, but sheesh." He exhaled, long, drawn-out, and dramatic. "Have you had any luck at all? Probableh not, wiv that stone of a restin' face you've got." He nudged her lightly, stretching his legs out in front of himself.

There was that silent hope that the shitehead from before would come back around, and he could really give him a piece of his mind. If there was anyone who could fistfight, it was Charlotte. If you got into it with her, there wasn't a chance you'd make it out alive, and that was a promise, not a threat. Or, maybe both, actually, now that he thought about it. When he turned his head, he noticed that the kid from before was off into a corner with his other friends, chattering, occasionally looking over at Gem and Charlotte-- what could they have been talking about that required them to look at him and his cousin so much? It was weird. Weird and creepy, and gay, too. It was very gay.
Gem lightly nudged Charlotte again, nodding his head over at the group of kids, (presumably older than them) pointing out the fact that they were looking at them and mumbling. He had no idea what Charlotte noticing would lead to, but it would definitely be funny.

"Oh yeah, 'cause we both know yer real good at fightin'," She laughed, sarcasm dripping from her voice. If it truly did come to Gem starting a fight, especially with the kid he was talking to, she knew he wouldn't be the one to end it. It was one of the reasons she'd stayed close to him. She noticed that, although Gem could fight, he wasn't very good at it, and he liked to make threats when the chance came around. The difference between him and and anyone else, is that he would mostly go through with them, but the outcome wouldn't be sunshine and rainbows for him. He was caught off guard too easily, sometimes she wondered if he even had a guard.
"Nah, 's definitely you. Who'd wanna be friends with a nerd like yerself?" She turned to look at him as he sighed, rolling her eyes at his next comment."Well, that's what I got you for innit?" She said, poking him in the side and smirking, just as she normally would.

Smiling in the company of Gem, Charlotte was off in her own world of thoughts. When they weren't doing things that, well, adults wouldn't condone, there was often just a comfortable silence. It was rare for their conversations to get or stay serious. Everything at some point or another would be turned into, not necessarily a joke, but something laughable. It was really the only way Charlotte knew how to deal with things, other than getting angry and punching something.
She turned her head over to where the boys were, her smirk growing as she cupped her hands around her mouth, "HEY, IF YE'VE GOT A CRUSH ON ME COUSIN YE COULD JUST TELL 'IM. Y'KNOW, LIKE A MAN. NO NEED FER WHISPERIN' ABOUT IT." She yelled, grabbing the attention of everyone in the hall. She had no shame for calling people out, the actually took a lot of amusement from it. She started giggling again when she saw one of the boys get up and make his way over to them.

"Tryin teh start somethin' are yeh?" His face was still red, which only made Charlotte's smirk grow. She stood up, leaning against the wall,
"I mean, it was kinda gay, wasn't it?" She snickered, secretly hoping something would break out of this; she wanted him to be embarrassed that he got his arse handed to him by a Year 1 girl.
Starting to pick at her nails, she looked up at him once more, "Are ye gonna do anythin' or are ye just gonna stand there like an idiot?"

Veronica stood with a few other upperclassmen just watching the two first years who were conversing with one another. She ignored most of what the group around her was saying. They were small minded boys who only cared about picking fights with underclassman. “Hey, Roni, d’ ya think the boy ‘s cute” She turned towards the boy that spoke before glancing over towards the First year Ravenclaw. “I mean, yeah. He’s cute, but I have no interest in finding a boyfriend. Okay, mate?

Veronica was about to walk away from the group until she heard a loud shout from across the room. “HEY, IF YE'VE GOT A CRUSH ON ME COUSIN YE COULD JUST TELL 'IM. Y'KNOW, LIKE A MAN. NO NEED FER WHISPERIN' ABOUT IT.” Roni nearly laughed. She knew the girl was talking to Jamie. She snickered when she looked over and saw his five a bright red. Oh that’s just priceless. He had it coming though. She began to continue her walk until she heard the loud stomping of an angry male. “Tryin teh start somethin' are yeh?” Roni spun on her heel to watch the scene unfold. The girl was just sitting against the wall practically ignoring him. Veronica instantly became worried, not so much for her, but for Jamie. “I mean, it was kinda gay, wasn't it?” She knew some kind of confrontation would unfold if someone didn’t step in. She stood frozen in her spot as she just watched. Oh crap. They’re gonna fight! I need to do something!

Really without thinking, Veronica ran up and stood between the two, giving Jamie a sickly sweet smile. “Now, now, lets not get angry. It’s all in good fun mate. Just walk away, no need to get confrontational.” she sighed in relief when Jamie glared at the girl before returning to his friends.

Once Jamie was gone, Roni spun around to face the first year. “Are you daft? You could’ve gotten hurt if that went any further. Although, I have a feeling he’d been worse off. Ye’r one cheeky girl. Brave, but cheeky. ” She gave a small smile. “Name’s Veronica. What’s yours? And how ‘bout you?” She looked towards the boy. “What’s yer name mate?”

When Charlotte perked her shoulders up a bit, Gem knew that whatever she was about to say was going to be one of the funniest and most entertaining things he had seen during school so far. It was, like, their thing to start up stuff like that, especially when it came to picking on people who would pick on them. Charlotte knew how to come back around and bite people in the arse-- the people who deserved it, usually. It was rare that she ever came around and snapped at people who hadn't done anything wrong. Rare, but not never.

Gem was too busy grinning at his cousin to focus on the fact that there was a legitimate threat right in front of their faces, his head only turning up to stare at him when the boy snapped at them, his eyebrows raising high on his forehead. Well, he wasn't going to say this was a bad idea, but he wondered to himself if there was an outcome that would be beneficial to either one of them.

"I mean, it was kinda gay, wasn't it?"
Gem couldn't help but grin wider, looking between his cousin and the boy that was challenging her. Just as it seemed that their opponent was going to speak, a young girl with orange hair stepped in first. It was all quite sudden, in Gem's eyes, how quickly things could fire up, and then deflate. He would never admit he was disappointed, but seeing Charlotte rip that kid apart would've been a highlight of summer camp.
However, the redhead was quick to defuse the situation, egging him on to just leave them alone and, well, bugger off, really. It was quick and calm, better than anything Charlotte or Gem could do, and she did it without embarrassing herself-- a true travesty of first, second and third year maturity. Gem was impressed, but also a bit crestfallen that a fun situation like that got shot down that quickly.

“Name’s Veronica. What’s yours? And how ‘bout you? What’s yer name mate?”

Gem looked at her like he was an idiot, which was a fairly frequent thing-- it might as well have been his signature look. He shook his head, quickly holding his hand out to her to shake. She was pretty, and he was a bit awkward around pretty girls, as most people were. Or, maybe Gem was just awkward around anyone he ever had the chance to interact with.

"Aye, Veronica, I'm Gem. Thanks fer steppin' in," he mused, "I dunno if that kid would make it out alive if e' got into a toussle wiv Charlotte... she's quite merciless-- a nice word ta use would be cheeky." He sat up a little bit, gesturing at the spot beside himself. "Would'ja like ta sit wiv us?"

Charlotte's nose scrunched up when this girl had diffused the situation, not meaning it in a bad way towards her, she had just wanted to prove herself. I can handle myself... She had kind of wanted to get into a fight, so people knew not to mess with her. She was all about keeping her reputation up. It made her feel somewhat childish when someone comes around and breaks things apart for her. It was something her parents often had to do with her and Gem, although they never really stopped the fighting before it began.
She nodded as she heard the redhead's name. "Oh don't worry about me, a kid like tha' couldn't stand a chance. I'm tougher than I seem." She laughed, scratching the back of her head. No one had ever really resolved a conflict that quickly before and been so friendly right after, she was slightly taken aback.
"I'm Charlotte." She smiled. This was one of the first times she's actually had to introduce herself to anyone here. No one seemed interested in asking, and she was never one to initiate a conversation on her own. Nothing she said seemed interesting enough to break the ice. She nodded along to what Gem was saying, everything sounding right in her mind. Luckily, he invited the only person interested enough to talk to them.
"Been in a bit of a rut tryin' to make any friends," She explained, "Gem here keeps creepin' them out. Real weirdo, this one is." She teased, ruffling his hair. "Only joking," She smiled cheesily, looking down at Gem, but shaking her head. 'No I'm not.' she mouthed shortly after.

Aye, Veronica, I'm Gem. Thanks fer steppin' in,” Veronica smiled kindly towards Gem while accepting his hand and giving it a firm shake. “ I dunno if that kid would make it out alive if e' got into a toussle wiv Charlotte... she's quite merciless-- a nice word ta use would be cheeky.” She laughed lightly. “Would'ja like ta sit wiv us?” Veronica really didn’t expect to be asked to sit with them, though she was happy none the less. “I’d love te join ya.” She sat across from the two cousins quietly, her smile never leaving her face. “Oh don't worry about me, a kid like tha' couldn't stand a chance. I'm tougher than I seem.” Veronica laughed along with the brunette. “Believe me, he’s not much of a fighter. More of a scaredy-cat if ya ask me.

I’m Charlotte.” Roni returned the girl’s smile with one of her own. “Charmed to meet ya, Charlotte.” She went a bit quiet after that. She was a tad bit jealous of the fact that they had one another. Had family. Her smile fell only for a fraction of a second when she remembered that she was the youngest and completely alone, although, not without friends. “Been in a bit of a rut tryin' to make any friends, Gem here keeps creepin' them out. Real weirdo, this one is.” She giggled a bit as she listened to Charlotte as she proceeded to tease her cousin. “Only joking.” “Well I think Gem is lovely.

Veronica laughed a bit. “You two seem to be so close. Wish I had that. Although, if yer looking for a friend, you’ve got one n’ me.” She pointed towards herself before extending a hand towards each person. “Besides, I could use a few myself!

Gem scooted over a bit so Veronica had more space to sit, tucking his legs in, sitting criss-cross. Hearing Charlotte tease him was nothing new, so his only counter was an eye roll and a shove to her shoulder, faintly embarrassed that he'd been outed like that. Still, the news that the kid that picked on them was not only a tosser, but a scaredy cat, too, brought him immense joy. He fiddled with his cardigan while the two girls spoke amongst themselves, glancing up only when he heard his name leave Veronica's lips.

"Well I think Gem is lovely."

He smiled again, his cheeks warming up bashfully. He had no reason to believe that she meant that in any other way but politeness, but it still struck a chord in him somewhere, only able to pathetically stammer out his thanks.
"Fank you, I, uh, think you're quite delightful yersel'."
He was just about to bash himself for the lack of slickness he carried out, how much of a goon, daftie, was there even a word to describe how stupid he was-- but he didn't, and instead saw her face fall for a split second, suddenly curious about why that was. His question was answered for him, though, when she followed up the brief silence with a gently-spoken statement.

"You two seem to be so close. Wish I had that. Although, if yer looking for a friend, you’ve got one n’ me. Besides, I could use a few myself!"

Gem grinned at her again, reaching over to grip her hand, lacing their fingers, doing the same with Charlotte in hopes they'd form something of a triangle. Charlotte was never one to really like being touched, but if it would only be a couple seconds, there shouldn't have been issue, right?

"Yeh! We'll be a dynamic trio, I say. Tha Redhead, Tha Angry Wench, and tha Dee-Dah!" He winked at Veronica, bouncing in his place a bit. He was excited to have a new friend, she seemed like a sweet, very genuine person. No matter the context, she had sort of saved them from eternal humiliation if Charlotte wasn't able to chuck up a good comeback-- it was like fate had it, even if that sounded a bit cheesy.

Oh Merlin those idiots were loud, Catriona thought, slamming her book shut. She wouldn't be able to read another word with them shouting.

She watched them talking with a sigh, her annoyance ebbing away. They looked like they were having fun at least. She could just move to the library to read. At least then she wouldn't be forced to read the same line three times for it to make sense.

She was about to get up when she heard someone say, "I mean, it was kinda gay, wasn't it?"

Oh that did it. If these imbeciles were going to fight, they could at least do so without being absolute gits about it. Her mother wanted her to stand up to herself? Fine, she would.

She walked up to the three of them, scowling. "If you're dumb enough to use gay as an insult, you shouldn't be wearing those robes," she said, gesturing to the Ravenclaw girl. "And if you would please shut up. Some people are trying to read." This was most definitely a bad idea. The Ravenclaw and Gryffindor girls looked like they could probably murder her without batting an eyelash. The most Catriona could do was insult them. Maybe if she ran, they wouldn't do anything. But wait, Catriona still had her book. Her thick book that probably weighed six pounds. A book that could, hypothetically, be used as a bludgeoning weapon. A swift hit to the stomach would give her enough time to run and lock herself in the bathroom if necessary.

Confident in her solution, Catriona continued. "Sorry if I seem confrontational. It is 2019 after all. You should know better."

"Every important thing that's ever happened to me has been in a library."
