POTIONS CHAMPIONSHIP -- SPECTATOR THREAD
A few days after the Tragedy of Pyre...
Dear Fellow Hogwarts Students, and all of our visitors from the other Magical Schools!
The Wizarding Schools Potions Championship is in full swing! If you are participating in the event as a Champion, good luck to you and try not to blow up our school the way some dastardly person blew up our fellow students in Hogsmeade a few days ago! I know this will be a very difficult time for our visitors, but perhaps you might want to forget about what happened, even for a short time. Come and cheer on your schoolmates as they seek to win glory in the form of the Golden Cauldron!
This is an open thread! Everyone who is not already participating as a Champion is free to join in! Feel free to post observations, cheers, jeers, conversations, all the usual! Definitely don't try to help any of the participants cheat, because I'm sure Professors Lennox and Regan will have you in the worst detention of your life! The competition itself comprises two rounds of potion brewing that occur here in the Great Hall, so feel free to react to either or both rounds of potioneering. Check out this post for information on the event!
Usual rules apply: 200 word minimum per post.

Castor and Pollux were supposed to be down there. In the main part of Hogwarts great hall. They were really the whole reason the three brothers had even travelled to Scotland in the first place. They had wanted to compete in the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship. Cursa wanted to cheer them on. Only now, there was no one for Cursa to cheer on. Some idiot had blown up a number of the abraxan drawn carriages and coaches that brought all the wizarding kids from their own countries here to Hogwarts. So many had died. Teachers and students alike.
Cursa felt alone.
Even though the stands were packed and the smells of potions filled the air and sounds of cheering and talk were all around, Cursa wondered why he had even bothered to come in here. He listened as the Hogwarts professors talked about the competition and its history. He checked out the competitors. Cursa rolled his eyes.
Of course, he was there.
Colin.
His insufferably idiotic, werewolf, blood-traitorous cousin. At least the boy looked the part. His wild pale blond hair already had the look of being exploded by some potion gone wrong. He clearly heard the boy howl as he and his partner started planning their course of action. Cursa wondered: was the blonde girl his mudblood girlfriend? Alex and Angus had been rather shy on details of what she looked like. Only that she had blue eyes. And that Colin had a thing for blue eyed girls. Or was this girl just one of Colin's many snogging partners?
As the competition progressed, Cursa found his attention focused mostly on the blonde girl and the white haired boy. His heart felt ill at ease. He should have been cheering on Castor and Pollux. If the world were all right that is. But now he felt drawn towards watching his cousin compete. The boy seemed to be sniffing around the ingredients cabinets like a dog sniffing at some interesting fence post. Disgusting. But --- maybe there was a method to the madness? He'd clearly sniffed something weird among the broken carriages. Cursa had no idea what it was. Some kind of mushroom or other. But they had told the aurors all about it all the same.
He began to enjoy the competition just a bit. There were clearly some top pocket potioneers here at Hogwarts! And even Colin and his girlfriend seemed to be holding their own. He wondered, and not for the first time, if Alex and Angus were telling them the whole truth about Colin and Liam and the rest of their Scottish kin.
Open for interactions!

No way in Hell would Casey do this with Emily. He'd been putting up with her constant doting and observations since he arrived with half a functioning body after nearly getting blown up in Hogsmeade. Even days later when his noggin and hand were back to normal, aside from the odd twitch when he thought he was losing his hearing, she was still asking him round the clock if he was alright, if he needed anything, so on and so forth.
While the paranoid twitching was mainly the reason he wouldn't participate in case an odd bubble or splash sent him checking over his shoulder frantically every wit's end, it felt more like extra insurance for a guy like him to weasel out of partnering with someone far too energetic for him. Not that he minded that about her. She was more soft than upbeat a lot of the time. Still, he wasn't really the best person to handle that kind of energy with his own.
He came in and headed towards the side of the room, with one other boy already there that he recognised... It's funny how one becomes instantly aware of everyone in his school after getting blown away in the same accident. That, and Ilvermorny lads were impossible to outrun. It was quite weird not to have run into Zyair for the hundredth time though. He was as regular as a clock's hands when it came to their interactions together. God knows where he's gone.
He climbed past the Ilvermorny lad, plopping in a space behind him. "'Scuse me, Red."
He sat down and could see Emily with another classmate. As soon as she spotted him, she waved. With an amused scoff he gave a small wave back, feeling like the mother of a five year old. He was half expecting himself to say, "Just let us know when you're done," later down the line. He smiled wryly to himself.
Knowing her, I wouldn't be surprised.
While they were waiting for their third member to pick up the pace and meet with them, Casey took out his "souvenir" from Sato's carriage wreckage, still burnt and smoked over as the moment he found it. He still couldn't quite make out what it was exactly. It used to be jewellery, he knew that, but he was stumped as for the rest of the details. He just assumed it was a ring or something.
Not that he cared. The ring that is. He was still fuming at Sato and Plott's disappearances. He was expecting Sato's body to be no more than a charcoaled husk by the time him and Zyair inspected her carriage. As for Plott... Casey shook his head irritably. Plott always gave him the worst vibes ever since he first stepped foot at Ilvermorny. Casey knew from the start he didn't give a flying frick about Nick when he went missing. And now he himself vanished into thin air.
Screw him.
For Plott's sake, he was better off not being found... Unless he wanted a triple sucker from Casey personally.
It became a habit for him to play about with the ring and so he did out of subconscious. He fiddled and tossed it between his fingers, a small dull twang every now and then as it hit off his nails.
He may as well had something to do while he was babysitting cheering on his Hogwarts acquaintance.

POTIONS CHAMPIONSHIP -- SPECTATOR THREAD

Avery was excited. Today was the day of the Potions Championship. She had never been to one, so she was excited to see what would happen. She walked into the stands. Hoping she would still be able to find a spot since it was already full. She eventually found an empty area with a few cheering students around her.
Avery glanced around hoping she would find someone she knew. Unfortunately, she didn't see anyone yet. She gave up trying to find anyone she knew and turned her attention to the people brewing potions. She watched people as they scrambled back and forth from their stations to a large area full of well organized ingredients. She was impressed with the amount of detail they had put in to make sure everything was in its place.
Avery was glad she had gotten out of classes for the day to watch this event. She didn't really want to go to classes, and watching people make potions seemed way more interesting than having multiple assignments to do.
Avery knew that this event was going to be interesting. She glanced once more around her to get an idea of how the Great Hall had changed. She knew there wouldn't be much else to do when the real action began to happen.

POTIONS CHAMPIONSHIP -- SPECTATOR THREAD

Sitting next to and talking to @Avery Gray and there to support @AngelFyre McCubbin
Potions. It was one of those things that Simon hoped to become better at his time went on at Hogwarts and beyond. There were potions that changed ones size, love potions, restorative potions, luck potions, and healing potions. It was the healing potions that Simon was most interested in. While he had a strong interest in potioneering, he wasn't really confident yet in his potion brewing abilities.
One person he knew was a rockstar with potions was his own amazing girlfriend, AngelFyre McCubbin. When she announced that she wanted to participate in the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship, he was all in support of it and encouraged her to do so. Now that they were no longer prefects, this was exactly the sort of event that she could participate in now that free time become more plentiful.
He arrived, glancing around the setup in the Great Hall before making his way over to the spectator fans. He found a seat next to a young brunette and smiled her way. "Hope you don't mind me sitting here," he said to her as he found a place. There was surprisingly more people there than he figured there would have been, but this wasn't just Hogwarts students participating.
Maybe the magical schools visiting needed something like this after what happened in Hogsmeade. He knew that that his girl needed this and he hoped, beyond all hope, that she would place well. If she didn't he didn't figure it wouldn’t be any fault of her own as she was one of the brightest witches he had ever come to meet.
Simon sat eagerly in the stands and when she got a moment to glance his way, he lifted up a pennant adorned in Hufflepuff colors and waved it to her.

If she could hear him from where she was placed, he would yell out "GOOD LUCK! I LOVE YOU! YOU'VE GOT THIS!" before blowing her a kiss.

POTIONS CHAMPIONSHIP -- SPECTATOR THREAD

"Hope you don't mind me sitting here." An older Hufflepuff said to Avery. "I don't mind at all." Avery smiled. The older Hufflepuff had brown hair and was a lot taller than Avery. He seemed nice, so Avery asked, "What's your name?"
She then began watching the competition. There were a lot of people competing, so Avery didn't know who to cheer on. She didn't recognize anyone she knew yet. Maybe she should get to know more people. She watched carefully as students scrambled to get the right ingredients for each potion. They make it look easy, but Avery knew it wasn't. She didn't know how they could focus on what they needed under this kind of pressure.
Suddenly the boy next to her waved pennant with the Hufflepuff colors toward someone making a potion. She couldn't tell who he waved to since there were a lot of people. Then he said, "GOOD LUCK! I LOVE YOU! YOU'VE GOT THIS!" Then he blew a kiss toward whoever he was talking to.
"Is your girlfriend competing?" Avery asked. Curious to find someone to get to cheer on. Maybe watching this competition wouldn't be so awkward after all. Maybe it would actually be a lot of fun.

POTIONS CHAMPIONSHIP -- SPECTATOR THREAD
⋆˙⟡Beth Merryweather⋆˙⟡
Mentioning-@Colin McCoire

It was perfect.
"Perfect" being a rather grand stretch when it came to Beth’s copy of Magical Draughts and Potions. It had once been a pristine textbook, filled with knowledge, but now it looked more like something that had endured a lengthy battle with a wild creature—or more correctly a bored student who couldn’t stand for neatness. Pages had been torn, corners burned, and various strange, chaotic things had been done to it in the name of boredom. The result was a sad puzzle, as the pieces haphazardly dangled from their fragile edges, waiting for some sort of saviour to fix them together.
But it was done, or at least, mostly done. She was holding it ahead of her, each crumpled page threatening to fly off in every direction with every step as she made her way into the Great Hall. Her eyes were scanning for anyone who might just stitch it back together.
She had tried, of course. Reparo—the spell everyone was supposed to master by the end of their first year. But as usual, she failed miserably. It was one of the downsides of the wand choosing the wizard. And Beth? Well, she was a spunky, brash, cockney through and through. Her wand, naturally, reflected that: equally unpredictable, stubborn, and rather bloody arsey. It was as though the universe was sending her karmic retribution for every sarcastic remark, every rebellious streak, and every show of disrespect toward authority through her very own magic. This particular failure at Reparo had her in the foulest of moods, her raven ponytail looking more like an angry bird's nest than her usual mid-level-frizz, and her already crumpled Slytherin robes now looking like they'd been through a small hurricane.
But no matter for little Beth. She’d find someone to fix this mess. She wasn’t going to let a little thing like ruined schoolwork stand in the way of her day.
Her gaze drifted past a group of students gathered around for a potion competition, but she wasn’t interested in that—at least not right now. She was on a mission. And that mission had her gaze land upon a particular ginger-haired boy, who seemed to stand out amongst the rest. He was clearly older than her, and there was something unusual about him—namely, the fact that he wasn’t wearing a Hogwarts uniform. Beth purposefully didn’t pay attention to the annoyed clench of his jaw or his intense focus on the brewing chaos before him. If he could be the one to help her fix the book, and get her out of yet another detention, then that was all that mattered.
“’Scuse me,” Beth called out with the brash confidence that only a council estate upbringing could provide. Her cockney accent rang out clear and strong, unfazed by the fact that she was much younger than the boy. All robes too big and scraped up knees. “Y’ think y’ could-” she began outstretching her book a touch, but then something caught her eye.
The potion competition. Specifically, the pair of students who the ginger boy was watching. One was a blonde, his hair windswept in the aftermath of what seemed like a rather spectacular potion fail. The other, his partner, looked like they were both trying to salvage what had already been destroyed. The sight of it made Beth snicker, her sharp laugh escaping before she could stop it.
“What a twat,” she muttered, her nose crinkling as she chuckled. The misfortune of others always seemed to lighten her mood, even if for just a moment. Her own troubles with her book didn’t seem so bad when someone else was having a much more public disaster. "Why doesn’t he just—”
In the middle of her moment of levity, just as she turned to continue her rant about the ridiculousness unfolding before her, someone—probably an idiot—shoved her from behind.
It was like time slowed down.
She didn’t even have time to react, her gaze locked on the falling pieces of parchment, all her progress unraveling before her eyes. A taunting confetti that had the Slytherin girl gawping up to the boy and back down to the floor, for once being actually speechless.
So slowly, silently, ignoring the mess at her feet, Beth turned and began watching the competition with an unreadable expression, though buzzing as if she were about to explode.

Etiam si omnes, ego non.
Even if all others, I will never.

POTIONS CHAMPIONSHIP -- SPECTATOR THREAD

Talking with @Avery Gray
"Simon," he answered her inquiry about his name as he unraveled the banner and ensured that it would lay straight enough to be, hopefully, seen. "Simon Kincaid." He was glad the girl didn't mind the intrusion and made his shout out to AngelFyre early so she knew that he was there and cheering her on.
"Yea, that pretty blonde over there. AngelFyre McCubbin," he said as he pointed to AngelFyre and smiled brightly. "She's going to do great. Potions is one of her strongest classes." She was amazing at it and even had made some of the potions that Simon always carried around with him - just in case he or someone else might need a little healing. There was the Calming Draught, the Antidote to Common Poisons, the Antidote to Uncommon Poisons, and Burn Healing Paste - all compliments of AngelFyre.
"She does almost everything remarkably well, except maybe singing, and you know, even then - despite that, she's probably one of my favorite singers."
Simon thought if she was going to cheer for his girl, the girl beside him should know her teammate as well. "She's working with her best friend, Colin McCoire. I just pray neither gets hurt."
Simon now turned to the girl and gave her a smile. "What's your name? What made you come out to support the Potions Championship on this lovely day?"

✽Aver smiled and said, "Nice to meet you Simon. I'm Avery Gray." She looked over to the crowd and saw his girlfriend AngelFyre and her teammate worked hard on making the best potions.
Avery was amazed at how good the competitors were at making potions. She didn't think she would ever be as good as them. Maybe someday she would decide to compete in the competition. But she needed to get through her first year of potions first.
Avery laughed a little at his comment about her singing. AngelFyre seemed like a great person to be around. She also seemed like a great friend. Avery made a mental note to try and find her after the competition.
Avery nodded her head when Simon mentioned Colin McCoire. She remembered hearing his name around Hogwarts, but had never actually talked to him.
Avery watched again as people scrambled to get the right ingredients and worked hard to make sure everything was right. One wrong move could end with a lot of people hurt. She just hoped that it wouldn't end up bad. She just wanted everyone to be safe.
"Since this is my first year at Hogwarts, I came to this competition to see what happens around here. It actually looks fun, and I'm thinking about joining next year." Avery responded to Simon's question about what made her come out to supports the championship. ✽

Casey's eyes jumped from one group to the next as they all the participants busied themselves with potion brewing and ingredient forging, as well as the odd group huddle whispering peppered in between. He could see Emily cheerfully cutting up sprigs and roots, all of which were flipped into her team's cauldron and cooked to perfection while she tidied up her work station in between brewing time lapses. It went without saying, nor had Casey doubted it the entire time even before Emily would enter the contest, but she was definitely the most passionate one out of her team for sure. Casey jokingly thought to himself that maybe she should do all of his potions homework if she was going to be so hyped up about it.
At the end of both brewed potions, Emily kept looking back in Casey's direction to see if she had maintained his attention. Of course she did. Casey was more... Reserved. But he wouldn't deny that Emily kept him entertained. She was the much needed bright spot that helped him enjoy the lighter side of things. He even cracked a smile every time he saw Emily burst into sparks of energy whenever she took over for her team.
"Yeah, you go girl..."
He overheard snippets of conversations as other spectators watched on. One guy got talking to a younger student; his girlfriend apparently taking part with a friend. Funnily enough, he noticed the redhead in front of him staring intently at the friend in question, another boy with untamed white hair. Watching the particular pair was quite a sight in comparison to just Emily in her element alone.
"Hogwarts sure has colourful characters..." He said quietly, "Colourful" being a complimentary term. Like Emily, the two that some of the other spectators were watching were quite the delight to watch too.
"Don't start losing your stride now... Or your heads!" He called out to the the lively pair and Emily. "Finish strong!"
