Defensive Brewing... Again Potions Championship - 2nd Potion

Avis glanced over the spread of ingredients in front of her, mentally making a quick note of each one. Lethe water, Valerian sprigs, standard ingredient... ah, there it is. and mistletoe berries!

"I think that's everything," she said to her partner as they finished up prepping the table. Avis took a deep breath and scanned the recipe to the Forgetfulness Potion. She would start the two of them off this time and Maisie would finish. The first potion had been a success, as far as they knew, and Avis hoped they could keep the second one up to standard.

Measuring out 2 drops of the Lethe River Water, Avis placed them carefully into her cauldron. "Incendio," she said in hushed tones, waving her wand in the required movement for the spell and lighting the wood below her cauldron on fire. She kept the flames low in order to gently heat the cauldron for 20 seconds. After that was finished, she extinguished the small fire and added her 2 Valerian Sprigs and stirred slowly and steadily with a wooden spoon, 3 times clockwise. Waving her wand over the whole thing afterwards, she started up the flames again and left the half-finished concoction to brew for a good 45 to 60 minutes.

Stepping back from her work station, Avis took a breath of relief. She'd done the best she could and followed the recipe to a T. Hopefully it would be good enough for a competition, but this particular potion didn't worry her quite as much as the first one had. This potion was the first one they'd learned in class and she'd done it several times since for homework and for practice as it was a fairly simple recipe. The first time she'd made it had been a success and since then, she'd only messed it up once and that had been during the second part anyhow. Avis smiled slowly. She had full confidence that Maisie could finish it off strong and she glanced at her best friend as their potion continued to brew.

"I'm gonna go see if I can't find us something to eat," Avis said and gestured at the potion. "It's got about 40 minutes left so you've got some time before adding the standard ingredient and berries."

With that said, Avis took off between the tables, wondering who she could ask for a quick snack and if she could possibly find a blueberry muffin somewhere.

Defensive Brewing... Again Potions Championship - 2nd Potion

Here they were again, staring down the barrel of the potions championship. Logically, two first years who hadn't finished the year's curriculum probably did not have great chances of going very far in this thing, but those odds would never stop Maisie and Avis! This time, this decided to pick something that was perhaps a little less obvious in its application: Forgetfulness Potion. The idea was very simple: the rep caps couldn't guard their apples if they forgot they were supposed to!

So, with this logic in mind, the girls returned to the hall to get going on their Forgetfulness Potion. While Avis counted out all their ingredients, Maisie spent time cleaning over all their equipment. After all, that would be the foundation for a well-made potion!

They'd split up the potion once again into halves. Maisie stood on hand for Avis' part, which seemed to go pretty seamlessly. When they reached the part where it needed to be let alone for 40 minutes, that felt like a relief, even it it meant that it would soon be her turn. She stayed with the potion while Avis went to get them a snack. "Sounds good," she said as she timed it.

And soon it was, indeed, time. So, she got herself to work adding two measures of Standard Ingredients to the mortar. Swiftly, she also added four mistletoe berries to the mortar. This combination then needed to be crushed together. She did so carefully, wanting to achieve that 'medium-fine' powder. Once she felt satisfied with it, she took the mortar in hand and added two pinches of the mixture to the cauldron. That was all the ingredients. Wiping the sweat from her brow, she felt some ease that they were almost at the end.

Reaching out for the spoon, she dripped and started to stir the potion anti-clockwise. She did so five times, whistling a little cheerful tune as she did so. Hopefully some cheer wouldn't upset the other tables. It was just a way to pass the time.

And then, once again, she swapped the spoon for her wand. Carefully, she waved her wand over the top of the cauldron to complete it. The red potion seemed to glimmer in the reflection of her eye. Looking across at Avis, she gave her a smile. "Looks like we're done here," she said, "Next up: red caps. How are you feeling?" 'Prepared' or something like it was what she hoped her best friend would say, but maybe they'd only know when they stood in front of the task ahead.
