Potions Championship I Knock 'Em Down

Permission to lightly GM Pyxis and Elisa was received.

Word of a Potions Championship had gotten out and Kaito felt like that was too much effort to give. He was class at cooking, sure, but cooking competitively? He liked watching that, not being in the thick of things. However, it didn’t take much for Pyxis to convince him to participate as students who were joining in were given a break from classes. All he had to do to return to his bedroom early was complete a couple steps to a recipe and then bail? Alright, count him in.

He settled at one of the first-second year stations with his two classmates that would be his team members for the duration of the competition and listened as the History and Potions professors spoke. When given time to pick their own potions for brewing, the group of them discussed their options a bit and finally decided that their first conquest would be the Dizziness Draught. He quite liked this choice as it hit all of the bullets of the judging criteria. All that needed to happen now was that him, Pyxis, and Elisa brewed the best potion of their lives.

Volunteering to grab the ingredients while someone else collected the cauldron, he took a peak at the scrawl on his palms under his gloves. He’d written down the ingredients of the Draught quickly after they decided on it and was now relying on that to get him through this portion. He procured a basket to place the ingredients in and easily grabbed the firewhiskey and sprigs of skurvy grass, but had to suppress a gag when it came to plucking the woodlice and spider legs from their containers. He scurried back to their station where the cauldron was already waiting, opening and closing his palm even though it hadn’t come into direct contact with the unsavory ingredients. There was a quick conversation about splitting up the steps before he elected to begin.

He started off by measuring out the exact quantity needed for each firewhiskey measure while trying not to take a whiff. Once he was satisfied, all three measures went directly into their cauldron and then he turned the heat up. When bubbles started bursting on the surface of their brew, he left it like that for the required thirty seconds and then turned the heat to low. Again faced with the heebie-jeebies, he placed the four woodlice into a mortar and crushed them up into a powder. He was happy to no longer have to see the structure of the woodlice again and passed the mortar and pestle over to Pyxis who he hoped was already waiting with the skurvy grass.

Thus, Kaito’s time as a brewer for their first potion was complete. He was obviously going to stay and watch as Pyxis and Elisa completed their portions of the recipe and he was excited to see them ladle it out into vials together, but only a few steps in return for getting out of class? Today was a good day. “You’re up, Pyx,” he said, breaking the silence he kept up after their debate on who would do each step. He nodded to both of his partners then, quietly wishing them luck in their parts.

After a whole year at magic school, Pyxis felt like he’d conquered most things. He was on the duelling team, doing pretty good in classes, and had seen every inch of the castle that he possibly could. There were only two parts of his skill tree that he left untouched — potions and Quidditch. The latter was a long lost cause that the snake would not be participating in, and he honestly though the same of the former. Thankfully, a no stakes competition was exactly what he needed to train himself to be better at potions. And who better to align himself with than YouTube University cook, Kaito, and his housemate who was also slated to be one of his duelling partners later in the month, Elisa.

Pyxis’ eyes almost popped out of his head when he saw the massive transformation that the Great Hall had undergone. He couldn’t even recognize the spot where he ate breakfast that very morning. Making his way over to the section for first and second years, the snake leaned against their chosen station as he listened to the professors while they gave their introductory speech and revealed the tasks for each year group. Can’t we just hit those creatures with the Knockback Jinx? Of course they couldn’t seeing as one of the judging requirements mentioned doing as little harm as possible to the Red Caps.

It seemed like Kaito and Elisa were in agreement that the Dizziness Draught should be their first pick. Pyxis decided to grab the cauldron for their group and he was a little unsure of which to pick, but went for the default ones that looked similar to what every student was required to buy for school. The recipe he knew would need no alteration for a cauldron like that. He returned before Kaito so he set up the station, accepting help from Elisa if she pitched in. He placed the cauldron on the heating element and measured out the water. Once the ingredients had been ferried over by the lion, things were ready to go.

Pyxis watched as Kaito started up the process without hesitation. He possessed the hands of an experienced potioneer, though the snake was probably just seeing the skill of a kid who had to cook for himself one too many times. It was mesmerizing, in a way. Perhaps too distracting as Kaito’s words pulled him out of his daze after he passed over the mortar and pestle.

“R-right!” he shook himself off and took the two sprigs of skurvy grass up from the basket. They both went into the mortar and Pyxis mashed until he could see a green paste. He scooped out as much as possible using the pestle and dropped it into the cauldron. Placing the mortar and pestle away from the ingredients because they would no longer need it for the Draught, he used the provided ladle to stir the contents of the cauldron thrice in a clockwise direction. Last on his agenda was the wand waving which the snake hadn't yet gotten the hang off, but he tried his best to follow whatever his Potions professor had taught him and moved it over the cauldron.

“And now we wait,” he breathed a sigh of relief once his part was over and stepped back from the station. “I don’t suppose they have anything for us to do during the next forty minutes, right? Do we just… sit here and stare?”

It was a special day. This was a day Elisa had waited impatiently for, ever since she signed up for the event a few weeks ago. Today, was the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship, where students in teams would compete to brew the best potions and use those to complete the given tasks. The young girl had read about it previously in some book, and as soon as she knew that it would be held at Hogwarts, she spent two evenings at the library, delving deep into the books to try and find out some information that might be useful. To her disappointment, she didn't find anything particularly interesting, except that the championship was held in memoir of famous potioneer McQuoid.

For the tasks, Elisa had partnered up with two of her classmates, Kaito Foxglove and Pyxis Hellebore, the latter one being a Slytherin duelling co-captain and a fellow duellist. Though the two were just mere acquaintances with her (perhaps subject to change after the championship), she was rather satisfied with her team as the boys were both competent potioneers.

That morning, Elisa hurriedly stuffed some food in her mouth, enough to not get hungry until noon, and stayed in the Great Hall as the professors turned it into a fully equipped potions lab. With her, Elisa had taken her satchel inside which there was a notebook along with a few quills, not to forget her potions book, of course. She headed over to the first and second year section, joining her teammates around a fireplace. She greeted them with a smile and a nod, and laid her things on the table while the other two were already preparing the equipment and the ingredients.

"Thank you Kaito", she said as he came back with an arm load of ingredients. Then, she took a seat and watched silently as the other two started brewing the potion, first Kaito and then Pyxis. Elisa took a quill, dipped it in some ink, and began scribbling notes on her notebook, recording with detail what they were doing. They had separated the brewing into three, and each of them would do a third of it. That meant Elisa would have nothing to do for at least a dozen minutes, not counting waiting for the cauldron to boil.

"Well... you guys don't need to stay, that would simply be waisting time, especially since we'll have to wait about forty minutes for the brewing now, before I do my part", she answered to Pyxis, "I guess you can prepare for the next potion, if you have nothing to do." She would then approach the cauldron, and watch it closely for the next forty minutes, a timer set.

As the last minutes finally managed to tickle away, Elisa grabbed the two spider legs Kaito had brought to the table, and began chopping them into small, even pieces. If at the start of her first year she had thought the ingredients to be disgusting, she was completely used to them by now, and was pretty efficient in potion making. She scooped the pieces of spider legs up from the table and added them into the cauldron. A glance to her potions book and she stirred the potion four times, counter-clockwise, before raising the heat to medium level and waiting another five minutes. As the final minute tickled away, she waved her wand over the boiling substance, and turned off the fire. She took a glass phial from one of the cupboards and carefully poured the potion into it, without spilling a single drop. She closed the lid, gently placing it on the table. As she contemplated the orange liquid in the phial, she grinned and thought, one potion done, another to go!
