A Ringing in my Ear

After the Ilvermorny arrival at Hogwarts, Cyrus hadn’t been able to muster the energy to do much of anything. He numbly went to classes, doing the bare minimum to continue with his day, and then he sat outside, staring at the sky, for most of his afternoon and evening. He could only close his eyes and try to breathe the chilly autumnal air. He hadn’t even been able to see birds the same way – every time he saw an airborne creature, heard the flutter of wings in the air, he was brought back to Hogsmeade, when his gaze had caught on a lovely bird right before everything had fallen to pieces.
And here he was. Alive. While others were gone, dead, hurt, missing. Broken.
He was a seventh year. He was an adult, both magical and no-Maj. And he hadn’t been able to act like one when it had really mattered. Sure, he’d done a little bit, but Headmaster Plott was still missing. Plenty of others were dead. Others, wounded, some gravely. For all the training he had done, for all the duelling he had excelled at, he had hardly been able to do anything. He was a wizard, but for what?
He needed to do better, to try harder, to be able to save those in need. The first step in that direction, then, was to step out of his comfort zone. As such, he had crookedly pasted a few flyers around Hogwarts that advertised a four-versus-one duel. Maybe he was weak for requesting younger students, but he didn’t blame himself for not wanting to fight four seventh years who had been honing their magical skills for years. One step at a time, that was the important thing.
So here he was on a dreary Sunday evening. The usually bright-eyed, golden-hearted boy was slouched over ever-so slightly as he trudged into the duelling room at Hogwarts, most of his positive memories of the room now overshadowed by the consistent dread that had tugged at his heartstrings since his school’s fateful entrance to Hogwarts.
He could only hope people would actually show up. He needed to start learning how to grow.

❂《 ⌜ October 27, 2024 ▎ Evening ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Fire, smoke, screams.
Days had gone by since that trip to Hogsmeade. They were just gonna go for a quick visit, buy that… silly pudding or whatever it was that a certain Ravenclaw boy wanted. Maybe catch a glimpse of the international students that were arriving that day. But all they saw was destruction and chaos that continues to haunt her until this day. She had tried everything to get her mind off of it yet whenever she closed her eyes, it's all she could see. Whenever she sits in silence, the screams come ringing in her ears.
There are those who need help and there are those that are beyond helping veiled by the smoke that she had helped clear out but sometimes, she wishes she didn't then those images of the dead wouldn't have been burned in her mind for the rest of her life. Thanks to that though, there are things that she had realized and that is the level of danger that's lurking in the shadows, the real danger that they could face in the future and if she wants to survive and help her friends along the way… then this current state of herself is not enough for it.
Ever since then, she had been going back to the duelling club, standing there in deep thoughts. This is a sport that she had dropped a long time ago, losing her way and feeling like she was going nowhere with it. It made her feel like she's a burden. The hard work she had put in on it… never felt enough. But now, she is thinking of giving it another chance, especially now when she needs all the experience she could get to become strong enough to survive. Duelling can give her the fighting experience. At least, that's what she is considering. She needs more time to think about it though, if this is indeed something that's worth trying again.
Then that flyer caught her eyes. A 4v1 and it was surely drawing her in. A way to test oneself because she assumes it's against a higher year student. She had done something similar before… against Alan Vanes. How she misses her former duelling captain. She could've learned a lot from him, maybe even more if she stayed in the team while he was around. She should've asked for advice from him. A missed chance and perhaps that's what drew her in for this advertised duel, a missed opportunity to learn more and this is her second chance for it. While she is still a retired duellist and still thinking about whether to return or not… it wouldn't hurt to look at this.
That was the plan, to have a look at it, watch the duel… not participate in it. But is that really what she wants? No. Despite being out of shape, she wants to participate and maybe this will help her decide whether to go back on that piste and duel like the way she used to before. Once she had arrived, there she saw a familiar figure and something tells her that it's him who requested this duel. How? Just her bad instincts telling her that. She could be 100% wrong. “Are you the one who posted those flyers for a 4v1?” She would ask and if he was, then that is a lucky guess. The next thing to do now was wait until this duel starts and for the meantime, she needs to adjust herself back into a duelling state. Maybe not fully but at least enough to put up a good fight.

AEIOUSAPrat couldn't believe his luck as he stepped away from whatever class he was. While the recent events concerning Hogsmeade were saddening, this flyer was a chance for him to witness firsthand what dueling looked like for older students, and more importantly to participate in it. On his way to the dueling club, he felt a mix of excitement and determination flowing through his veins. This was it, an opportunity for him to climb one step closer to his quest for power.
The flyer advertising the 4v1 duel had caught his eye earlier in the day immediately. He couldn't resist the pull of such a challenge or the odds of a student that old willing to indulge youngsters. His thoughts racing with possibilities throughout the day as he went from one class to another .
As he entered the dueling club, he saw a familiar figure standing by the piste, lost in thought. An older gryff who he had seen in passing or perhaps at an event. He wasn't sure yet. If they had ever interacted previously he might have remembered her. Along with her stood a much older student, Prat assumed this was the poster boy. Waving a "Hey" to both and an "were you the one for this 4v1" question he posed at the lad. Prat settled in right near the gryff girl.
The trio waited for the duel to begin, each lost in their own thoughts. For Prat, this was a stepping stone, a critical moment in his journey towards power and mastery. Though without context it sounded like an edgy overlord's plans from a children's movie, Prat's intentions were merely the fulfillment of his selfish desires.

Avis slipped her way into the room, as cheerfully as she could. She bounced from person to person, looking them over before introducing herself to each of them. "Avis Marlong." She repeated this three times, once to each person in the room, attempting to give each of them a firm handshake as she went. If they refused, however, she would simply brush it off. She gave a little hop as she flitted about the room. She hadn't ever done a duel before, and she was stoked.
Well, mostly. The older year she assumed they were dueling against looked, well, old. Although, it was a 4v1. But still. She allowed the slightest bit of her hesitation to show as she introduced herself to him.
She slipped back next to the other younger years, plastering a small grin on her face, a mix of excitement and adrenaline. She quietly bounced on her toes as she waited, slouched her posture down a bit. She wasn't a tall 11-year-old by any means, but right now her goal was to seem like a 10 year, old, maybe 9.
After all, if you couldn't get someone to fear you, underestimation was the next best thing. Or maybe this wasn't an underestimation, maybe this really was Avis' skill level. That would be embarrassing. Either way, she reasoned, they'd find out soon enough. And hopefully, she learned a bit. Maybe she would even join the dueling team?

Some things weren't easy to put into words. Acacia had never been particularly good at them as a kid. If there was a problem, it could come meet her favourite problem solvers, her fists. And she had never really been anything but a kid. An older kid maybe, and a happier kid for sure. But she wasn't even thirteen. Probably. Twelve was to young to feel this old and untouchable and young and terrified all at the same time. Sometimes she would catch sight of one of the fireplaces in the room out of the corner of her eye when she wasn't thinking and jump right off her chair, taken back to a different day, one full of fire and explosions and terrified crowds and a whole lot of vomit. She tended to stick around her friends a lot more now, and not go anywhere near that courtyard. Hogwarts was a curse, and once she got out of here there was no way in hell she was ever going back.
But big promises aside, there was still time before she could go home. Time that couldn't all be filled with quidditch practice and kicking walls because this whole castle sucked and it deserved it. So when she saw the weird poster thing on the board that Cyrus had put up about a four-verse-one-duel-off she had decided to go along. Dueling wasn't something she had a whole lot of experience with, but if Ariam @Aston Beckett could do it, then how hard could it be? No offence to the dude, but in her eyes anyone who didn't play quidditch was incompetent somehow. Why else would they not chose the clearly best and superior sporting option? Anyway, she was here and she had remembered her wand and hopefully she didn't need any other gear because if so to bad.
Her initial assessment of the people who had turned up in the room (apart from Cyrus of course, who was awesome in her books) was a bit underwhelming. She didn't recognise any of them, and one of them was SHORT and BOUNCING AROUND like a child. Hopefully the child wasn't on her team. "Hi" she said, looking sort of vaguely pissed "I'm also here for the duel thing".
