Awe-Struck Open Finished

Severus entered library. He quickly looked around. He saw a Ravenclaw boy amongst the usual things in the library. Books, chairs, tables, etc. He sat down at a chair not too far from the Ravenclaw boy and began reading in the book he had brought with him. A book full of sheet music.

He quickly got lost in his own thoughts instead of reading. He was always a bit nervous meeting new people at Hogwarts because of his house. Slytherin wasn’t a bad house, it just had a reputation for having some... less nice people in it. Maybe he was just being paranoid. No one had really disliked him yet for being a Slytherin, but he always had this feeling that people were looking down on him for being a Slytherin.

Severus looked up at the Ravenclaw boy. He was reading a sci-fi book from what he could tell. Severus didn’t know that Hogwarts had sci-fi books, but the library was so big that it probably had books about any topic one could think of in it.

He thought about saying hi to him but decided not to. It would probably just be rude to interrupt his reading. How would he even introduce himself to him anyway? Instead he just looked down again and continued reading.

Logan kept happily reading, smiling softly. He was at one of the happier parts of the story he was reading, and was happy to see the characters be so happy. Whilst he was reading, he ended up so absorbed in the book that he didn't even notice the other boy enter the library and sit nearby. So he just kept reading, not saying a word.

He reached the end of the chapter he had ended up on, before his attention slightly wandered from the book enough for him to realize someone else was sitting nearby. He looked up, and looked at the other boy. A Slytherin, huh? Cool.

Logan had learnt about all the houses and what they were about from a young age, and had always thought Ravenclaw, all about knowledge and intellect, was the best. But he'd always thought Slytherin, despite turning out so many people, was the second-best house. The two houses were very similar, all about smarts, except whilst Ravenclaw was knowledge as the purpose, Slytherin was about an ambition for that knowledge to help fulfill.

Whilst Logan normally didn't like starting conversations, he figured it'd be best to at least try to gain maybe one friend? He was going to be in this school for 7 years after all..

"Salutations, my name is Logan."

”Salutations, my name is Logan.”
Severus was slightly startled by the sudden noise.
”H-hi, I’m Severus” he replied, quite nervously ”N-nice to meet you.”
He closed his book. Severus was not good at conversations, and especially not good at talking to people hadn’t met before. It was one of those things that everyone had to do, but he was just bad at. He had no idea what he should say. Logan seemed to like reading, just like Severus.

Severus looked back at his book and up again.
”W-what... umm... book were you reading?” he finally asked. “Why am I like this.” he thought. He wished he was better at talking to people, but it’s a thing that can only really be practiced by doing it, and because he wasn’t that good at it, he rarely practiced it.

Severus looked at Logan. He seemed to fit Ravenclaw quite well. Severus had somewhat of an admiration for Ravenclaw. They wanted to learn without needing a better reason than just to learn more. He had never really considered any houses to be better than others. They all had strengths and weaknesses in his eyes and one person from one house could be completely different from another person in the same house.

Logan smiled slightly at the other boy. "It's nice to meet you too." 

He could tell that the other boy was very nervous, but he figured that being nervous was fine, I mean, this was the first conversation the two had ever had, this was their first meeting. Logan knew he needed to give a good first impression, as he did need to make sure he had at least one friend.

Sure, he could likely make friends in his house's common room and his dorm, making a friend at the library seemed just as good an option to him, if not better. If the person went to the library, after all, that meant they liked reading, which signified a common interest. So, the library is a good place to make a friend.

"It's called Obsidian Abyss." Logan smiled. "It's a sci-fi novel about a group of space adventurers, fighting an empire of aliens that call themselves 'Obsidian Abyss', hence the title."

Logan was very happy to be able to talk about books, enough to actually be letting himself show it, as they were one of his main interests. "What about you? What book is that?" he asked curiously, clearly interested in knowing.

(Note, that book is not a real book, I generated a book title and then made up a basic plot for the book lol)

”What about you? What book is that?
”It’s sheet music of Beethoven 8th sonata. It’s also called “Sonata Pathetique”” he replied, not feeling quite as nervous as before. ”Your book sounds quite exciting.”

Severus was always nervous meeting new people, but he was feeling a lot more comfortable than before. Knowing that they both enjoyed reading meant that they at least had something to talk about. Even if it was quite different what they were reading.
Severus had never really read much sci-fi. Or fiction for that matter. It wasn’t that he didn’t like those genres, he had just never found many sci-fi or fiction books that seemed interesting to him.

”Do you like classical music?” he asked. Severus had always liked classical music. He had also been playing it for a long time. He admired the great artists who had written such masterpieces. But he did know that it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Some people just didn’t really like most classical music.

This was the second time he had met people in the library. He always seemed to meet nice people in the library. It was probably because everyone there usually had a shared interest: books. So if you liked books the library was a great place to meet new friends.

"Sheet music? So you're a musician then? That's nice." Logan smiled. He liked classical music so that's shared interest count up to two already. "Can you play that piece, then? Or do you just really like music theory? If so, I know a fair amount of that. I bought a few books on it whilst I was back home, because I like to find out as much as I can about, well, pretty much everything."

Logan kept smiling. He was enjoying this conversation, and was quite glad to have been the one to initiate it, as based on the Severus's shyness earlier, he likely wouldn't have started the conversation himself.

"Yeah! It really is exciting. You can read it once I'm done reading it, if you'd like?"

"Yeah, I do. It's the best kind of music, in my opinion. It's so amazing. It's also very calming too, which I also like, mostly since sometimes I do need something to calm me down. I.. have a bit of a temper sometimes." Logan chuckled sheepishly at his own remark, he.. he still did need to work on his temper, if he's being honest, but at least he knew the issue and was working it. The first step to improvement always is knowing how to improve, after all. "I am working on trying to have less of a temper, though."

”So your a musician then? That’s nice.”
”I guess you could say that. He replied, with a little chuckle
”Could you play that piece then? Or do you just really like music theory?..
”Well I can’t play this piece because it’s for piano, and I play the violin. But i do play the violin, as I just said.”

”Yeah, it is really exciting! You can read it once I’m done reading, if you’d like?”
”Sorry, but I don’t really want to read it...” he replied.

”Do you like classical music?” Severus asked
”Yeah, I do. It’s the best kind of music, in my opinion... I... have a bit of a temper sometimes. I am working on trying to have less of a temper though.”
Oh, I didn’t even realize that, You don’t really seem to have a lot of a temper.” Severus replied ”You seemed quite mild tempered to me.”

Severus thought this was quite a nice conversation. It was nice to meet someone who shared several of Severus’ interests. He was quite happy that Logan had started this conversation, as he probably wouldn’t have started it. He really didn’t like starting conversations. Mainly because he was very bad at it.

It was also quite nice to meet someone who also liked classical music. It was one of his favorite subjects to talk and think about, so it was nice to meet someone he could talk with it about.

”Do you have any favorite pieces? Or do you just listen to whatever you find?” Severus asked. He was quite curious about what type of music Logan liked know that he knew he liked classical music.

"Ah, right. The violin is a nice instrument." Logan smiled. "It's really pretty sounding too."

He liked violins, they were one of the best sounding instruments... when played correctly, that is. A violin played incorrectly can sound god-awful, with it's terrible squeaks and whines. But when played correctly, a violin can convey beautiful melodies through just the vibration of its strings. It's really quite beautiful.

"Oh, that's ok. I was just offering, you don't need to apologize." Logan reassured the other. "You're allowed to not want to read it."

He was surprised the other boy didn't want to read it, but he definitely wasn't going to force him to, as that would be very much a rude thing to do. And being rude is not part of the process of making a new friend.

"I only seem mild tempered because this is a nice and pleasant conversation." Logan commented. "When people are rude to me or annoy me too much, I tend to end up yelling at them.. quite loudly, in fact. At least I don't randomly end up throwing people into walls with magic anymore..?" He sounded rather guilty and regretful in his last sentence, he knew that it was not the best thing to do..

"I tend to just listen to whatever I find, to be honest. I have a lot of long playlists full of lots of classical music though." Logan replied.

”Yeah, that’s why I chose to play it. I’ve always loved listening to violins.” Severus replied.

”It’s just a bad habit. I always... apologize for things I don’t need to apologize for.”

Well it’s good that you’re improving and that you have something to help calm you down... I’m sorry if I sound cold or unsympathetic, I’m just... not very good at comforting people.

”That sounds nice. I often end up looking around for quite long for a piece to listen to, so it sounds nice to just have a lot of playlists to just put on.” replied Severus.

Severus didn’t really know what to think. A lot of things were happening. He really felt bad for Logan. Having a bad temper was not a very nice thing at all. In fact it was a really bad thing. It was one of those problems that left one feeling really guilty, and left everyone else thinking one is a... douchebag might be the right word?

Severus tried to lighten the mood a bit.
”So, have you heard some of Haydn’s pieces? He made a lot of happy and almost humorous music.”
