Jessica was not due to start Hogwarts until September which was why the invitation came as a surprise. The chance to socialise and learn more about the place she'd be calling home for next few years of her life was not one to be passed up. This could be an opportunity to get ahead in her studies or create contacts.

That was the plan anyway.

By the time she'd actually gotten to the castle, nerves had overtaken the young girl. She cursed herself in her head, she was supposed to prove herself here and she could pluck up the courage to even go into the castle, let alone explore its wonders. Instead she just loitered around the outskirts of the grounds, not too far from the forest path which had led her to the grounds.

She watched the crowds of mostly older students playing around the lake, relaxing in the sun or the shade and felt a twinge of jealousy. 'The plan' had not gone well. She simply wasn't brave enough to travel to the other side of the county alone and become popular and wise immediately after all. What a ridiculous plan it had been.

Jessica kicked herself and almost made to turn around. She still had her mobile phone. Hogwarts did something strange to electronics but maybe if she left the grounds, she could call her father and...

No.

Taking a defiant stand against her own doubts, Jessica straightened her posture. She merely had to find something which wasn't so scary. Maybe she couldn't march into the crowds or the castle right away but she could pick a student to approach. One alone who looked closer to her age... She patrolled the edges of the grounds, scanning for a suitable candidate before she found one. A boy, unfortunately, but no girls around were alone. It was better than nothing.

Jessica walked up behind the boy, folding her arms behind her back and cleared her throat to gain his attention. "Ahem. Hello."

I'll prove worthy of my blood. Whatever it takes.

Dale had finally found some peace. Summer had so far been Maggie and Carson dragging him all around the damn place but he had found some peace and quiet, he pulled out one of the books from the book back he brought him he.

But before he started to read he took in his surrounding. He grew up in a resort town, so he was no stranger to pretty sights but the grounds seemed unreal. All the grass was somehow perfectly cut the trees were tall and proud, the water was as clear as glass.

It was truly the best place to read a nice long book, as he opened the book. He read for a few hours before finishing the book once more. But he still wanted to read, he put the book back into the backpack and stretched his arms and legs. He sat back down and once again pulled out a book, but this one wasn't a book, it was a textbook, a chemistry textbook. He loved chemistry more than anything, he refreshed his brain on the more advanced concepts and staring delving into possible experiments he could do at Hogwarts before a girl came up to him and said hello.

"Oh, hello there, do you need anything?" he took a second to look at the girl, she seemed to be an early arrival, perhaps she was lost "Umm, are you lost do you need directions to somewhere?"

"Are you lost? He'd asked.

Is that how it looked? It caught her off guard and her face paled.

"N-no!" She protested to the boy. "How can I be lost? The castle is right there!" She pointed at Hogwarts. "I know exactly where I am!" Jessica huffed, puffing her cheeks while crossing her arms together. "I just thought thought that I'd, um, well, speak to someone."

The haughty attitude gave way almost immediately and a red blush caught onto the young girl's cheeks. "I don't know anyone here and you were by yourself so...." she admitted quietly and sheepishly.

Maybe this was why she struggled to have friends. The jealousy from earlier flared again. Especially as she caught sight of students laughing and playing together. Her friends had almost all abandoned her when she tried to tell them about her letter to Hogwarts. A liar they said. One day she'd show them wrong. One day when the Ministry's eyes and ears weren't everywhere.

"M-my name is Jessica," she caught ahold of herself. Suddenly remembering where she was, speaking to this boy, and she must show proper etiquette of course. Jessica offered a small curtsy just as her aunt had taught her, holding the sides of her skirt as she did so. "i saw you alone and thought I could say hello. Um, what are you reading?"

Dale look at the first year girl, she seemed to be really worked up over what he said, that was not the reaction he was wanting. He was trying and seemingly failing at acting cool in front of his underclassmen.

"Ohh, umm sorry about that. I'm Dale, Dale Kurt" The girl seemed to be having the same issue he had, not being able to find friends. He smiled at the girl and said "Umm, I'm reading umm uhh... a chemistry textbook." He had forgotten he was reading that, he hoped it didn't come off as weird to Jessica.

But reading that textbook was very calming, he had no idea why, but it just was. It reminded him of home and spending time with his dad in the lab. He wished he was home instead of at summer camp, but it still had its upsides. He has met a lot of people so far, mainly thanks to Maggie's plans, but still, it was fun.

He wanted to take this time to just read books and take naps, but Jessica seemed like a calm person. He faced the girl and said "Well would you like to join me here, the breeze is quite nice and its a nice place to talk."

"Dale. It's okay." Jessica flashed a smile back at the boy which almost instantly broke into a puzzled expression when he mentioned chemistry. Did they study the sciences at Hogwarts? Her mother had told her they didn't. No more English, mathematics or science, she'd said. Jessica almost shivered. If true, this was one way to kill her excitement. Not just kill it. Ruthlessly smash it to pieces.

But there was no sense panicking just yet.

Dale offered her the chance to sit with him. Jessica paused, casting a sideways glance at the grandeur of Hogwarts. It was tantalising to explore now but the offer was kindly. Kindly and opportunistic. A chance to have links to an older student before she even started Hogwarts was not to be passed up. Someone who knew all kinds of spells ready to sort out anyone who messed with her! She'd look so popular!

"Yes! I'll sit with you," she nodded and took her spot on the grass. He had a point. It was a pleasant day.

So. How does one make friends again? Show an interest in what they care about. "Um, why are you reading chemistry books?" Jessica cocked her head as she looked over the book in Dale's hands. "Is this on the syllabus?"

I'll prove worthy of my blood. Whatever it takes.

Jessica sat next to Dale. It truly was a beautiful day, with the sun shining and the wind blowing right through his messy hair causing it to even messier, he constantly ran a hand through it in an attempt to neaten it. The wind made it so it wasn't too hot, perfect weather for relaxation and reading. He looked at the girl sat next to him, she had long brown hair, and just enough freckles to be noticeable.

She seemed quite nervous to be at Hogwarts, Dale understood that he was also very nervous about going to a wizarding school, but being there for a whole year had gotten Dale more used to magic and he wasn't scared of the idea anymore.

"I j-just enjoy chemistry a lot, my dad is a chemical engineer so h-e made sure I knew my chemistry. And d-don't worry they don't teach it h-here." he assured the girl with a kind smile. His stutter was just as bad as it always was. "The closest t-thing we have h-here is potions. " Potions was something Dale enjoyed very much, it resembled chemistry very loosely. But still a loose resembles is still a resemblance. "So why did you come to Hogwarts early? "

She watched Dale attempt to tame his hair. He didn't seem to be having much success in the matter. Was there not a spell he could use? She was about to ask before stopping herself. Would that be rude? Would that imply he had bad hair? Why was making friends such a pain?

Her relief was palpable. There really would be no more science tests! It would probably be replaced by something equally bad but at least there was hope!

"Chemical engineer..." Jessica repeated in thought. That certainly didn't sound like a wizarding career. Was Dale muggle born or half blood? Suddenly the desire to learn of Dale's experiences overwhelmed her - how he was treated could be how she was treated after all. But he asked the question first.

"Oh. Oh I'm here because I got the invitation and..." Jessica shrugged nonchalantly. "Home is a little boring. My friends are... not my friends anymore and my brother is a pest," she shook her head at the thought. "He drank from my glass instead of his on purpose last Tuesday! Can you believe that?" Clearing her throat as she realised she was going off topic, Jessica continued. "Yes. Well. I wanted to learn more about where I'm going to live for most of the next few years before I come here to stay. And the people I'll be around."

"So, um, back to the chemistry." Probably not the most smooth transition. "That's not very... magical? Are your parents muggles?"

Dale agreed with the girl, he seemed to distance himself away from his school mates after he got his letter, no one really noticed or cared truly. But it was weird to go to regular school knowing he was a wizard. Even if he wanted to tell anyone he really had no one to tell. But he never minded not having friends all through his elementary years, he spent the majority of his time learning about chemistry with his dad or astronomy with his mother. But Dale was a bit jealous of all the friend groups in the library and he wanted to try to make friends but found little success, he hoped next year would be different in that regard

He let out a chuckle at what she said about her brother. Dale was a single child and sometimes wished he had a sibling, he wondered if they would also have magical talents. Dale also wished he came early, he could have learned much more if he came during the summer last year.

"Y-yeah, I'm a muggle-born." Jessica seemed like a pureblood, but he had a tendency to think everyone was a pureblood. "My father thought me chemistry when I was young, ever since then I've loved it." he told Jessica. "What about you, are you a pureblood?"
