A Sanctuary for Angels
Rowan snorted in amusement, running his knuckles down the owl’s back.
“Tell us how you really feel Elena. I think my hair is fine, thank you.”
“It looks fine! But yes, I did do it.”
“Hey Sib? Where’s tripod?”
“In your room last I checked little Veela.”
At that Rowan froze, already pale skin going many shades lighter. Visibly, panic filled his eyes, and his entire body tensed up. Had he simply over looked this offhand comment, likely no one would have noticed, however it was too direct. Shallow breaths escaped his lips.
“I could do some light colours in your hair next time Rowan! You have such nice... blonde... oh darling- shit-“
Trailing off, Jackie was the first to react to the obvious oncoming attack.
“Sibya- go get the chat now-“
As Jackie crouched down infront of Rowan, Sibya went to go to his room, and hopefully find the cat but with nails digging into the wheels, Rowan snapped suddenly, voice low, but sharp, and shaky, words flowing fast like blood from a wound.
“Sib don’t you fucking leave this room. How do you know? How the fuck do you know? He didn’t- he didn’t tell you- she- she definitely did not tell you- How the fuck do you know?”
“Ro, breat-“
“Jackie if you talk about breathing excersises at a moment like this I will scream.”

The first thing Elena saw Rowan have a full scale panic and drop like someone who'd just started a seizure.
Elena fixed Rowan with a determined gaze, "Breathing exercises ain't gonna fix anything, what you're going to do is calm the hell down so that you can rationalise whatever you're about to hear. I swear to god if you don't snap out of it I will steal all of your caramels and hide them, or eat them, whichever happens first. You understand me Ro?"
In her mind Elena was in full scale panic and just barely managing to block out the cacophany of Don't give up on me, come on you'll be okay, don't be hurt please don't be hurt. that always came with someone she actually bothered to care about acting out of the average smiles, or in Rowan's case, gentle frowning, she'd come to know.
"Then, after you're okay and have had several cups of tea, maybe seven, you're going to tell me what set you off like an alleycat that just heard a gunshot." Elena kept glancing around him to try and make sure nothing was in range that could hurt him, at one point snapping her neck around when something made a noise in the distance.
Valek had just decided to try and make Rowan feel better by being soft and fluffy on his lap.

Rowan blinked a few times, frankly floored by Elena’s reaction. Jackie’s jaw was on the floor and Sibya was standing like a deer in headlights, not knowing what to do.
The noise Elena heard was probably a soft meowing as a three legged beastie came forward, making a straight shot for Rowan. If Valec had any brains, the owl would move from his lap so the cat could jump up, and if he didn’t move, Rowan was still bending over to pick Tripod up. Snuggling the soft, fluffy creature to his chest. Tripod looked quite unbothered with this whole mess and snuggled against him as well, mewing softly still.
“I’m fine. I’m fine now.”
Jackie let out a sigh, standing and walking over to her wife, before promptly slapping her. Sibya jerked back, and held her jaw.
“Ow.. okay, yeah, I deserve that. Rowan can I go check on the food?”
“Yeah.. sorry for yelling- just- conversation isn’t over.”
Sib nodded, before walking out of the room and to the kitchen, rubbing her face still.
“I’m so sorry Elena dear. Do you want me to bring you guys some tea? You can hang out in Rowan’s room until dinner is ready.”

Elena looked around and leaned against her staff, flashing a quick grin at the assembled people. Valek made a small screech of surprise and simply whooshed up onto Rowan's shoulder instead.
"Yes please that'd be lovely Jackie, thank you." Elena smiled politely and curled her arm further around her staff in a way that was slightly overflexible, "Would you like tea Rowan? Maybe some camomile or passionflower or... nevermind I'm rambling now."
Elena made a small whistling noise and Valek flew up onto Elena's head to wait for the invetable food that he just knew that whistle was. Training birds was fun, it meant you had a lifelong friend and were suddenly immune to every single fear of birds you could ever have. Birbs are your friends kids, remember that, and also remember to tithe to the magpies in your neighbourhood or else you'll discover that those are the mafiosis of the bird world and that they really do like swooping people.
Plovers are just insane don't even worry about feeding them, they hate the world.
Her eyes flicked over to Rowan and dropped her voice, "And before you tell me anything, I'll give you a secret of my own."
Elena pulled a journal out of her bag and held it out, if Rowan looked inside he'd see all the research which lead to a scrawled print inside the front cover that stated I'm A Seer.

"You are rambling, however the concern is appreciated, mm?"
Rowan looked to Jackie for a moment, shrugging, before he rolled over to his room, Tripod sitting comfortably in his lap. Rowan Then accepted the diary, looking over the book as he waited for Elena to step into the room as well. Assuming she did, of course, Rowan handed the book back when she entered.
The room was not massive, but not small by any means. Bigger than Elena was used to, definitely, but... cozy. Against one wall, there was simply bookshelves. Half filled, with some still waiting empty for books he had yet to read. Against the opposite wall, a desk and a variety of drawers and cubbys, some filled with scrolls, or paints, or brushes, or pens, all filled with something. There there was some more obvious clutter, stuff laying around on the desk, and under it. On that wall, there were things tacked above the desk. Sketches, pictures, art, houses, people- him- just him in some way. On the wall to the left, a bed shoved into a corner, with a crappy old wheelchair with a cat tree stacked ontop of it, and a litter box under it at the base of the bed. On the wall to the right of the desk, the door, and a wall of pictures, and a few boxes near the floor, along with a food and water dish.
"My mother was half veela."
He said in a low voice as he rolled into the room, stopping somewhere in the middle and turning to look at Elena.

Elena took the journal carefully back then disappeared it into her satchel. The girl leant her staff against the wall, and then stood with her hands clasped behind her back as Rowan spoke.
"Half veela..." Elena tilted her head slightly to the side, "This means you have superpowers correct? Something along the lines of charmspeaking, if I remember."
"My best friend is part harpy. Coolness." Elena made it sound like he'd just told her that he has a secret stash of chocolate frogs, or that he's thinking of dying his hair blue, "Although I admit don't tell people about being a seer because I'm afraid of... damn I suppose the closest description is human, well wizard trafficking. Is it similar to that reason or is it something else?"
Elena eyed him, hoping she looked mystical enough that Rowan wouldn't question why she was afraid of being stolen by someone or anything like that. Why be afraid of normal things when you could be extra paranoid and also about something that'll likely never happen. That's just common sense people, I mean come on.
Which is more likely? Definitely the latter, I mean, people are complete assholes if you give them a chance and a third.
