Herbology, it was easily one of Oliver's favorite classes. One of his best to, Not just because of the minimal spell casting, no. Oliver really understood the subject mater. Turns out, he did not mind getting his hands in the dirt, the care it took to raise a good plant, to keep one alive. It was thrilling. He really needed some for his dorm, it would help liven his side of it up quite a bit. His only concern in that was the darkness of the Slytherin common room. Not a whole lot of sunlight that most plants needed. He was almost sure there was some that could survive in darker climates though, he just had to find them.
Some may say it was a blessing that he was gifted in that field, how he never seamed to struggle. Oliver did see the truth, a double edged sword. He was asked by Professor Toussaint if he could help 'tutor' another first year who was not as gifted as him. If he was reading what he'd been told about the girl, Avis, she was bad, very bad, at Herbology. Now Oliver was not really wanting to help the girl, he wasn't a tutoring type. But, tragic as it was, the request came from a Professor. So he felt like he had to agree.
That had been what led him here, in the Study room waiting for his tutee to arrive. He'd sent her an owl asking her to meet him at the study hall after lunch on the twenty third. It had not been how he wanted to spend his Saturday, yet also sadly, he had nothing better to do. He had all of his Herbology notes set up on the table. As well as a small stack of book's about the subject to. He didn't fully know how much or little help she would need. So he tried to prepare for the worst. The worst being her not knowing what photosynthesis, he really hoped it wouldn't be that bad though.
Patience was not his virtue as it would turn out. He was really starting to think this girl would just not show up, yet, she did. Soon the girl walked in, and he could only assume it was here as he'd never seen her before. "Can I assume your Avis?" He asked, seeing as she came to sit in front of him and all. It would just make seance for it to be her. Once her identity was confirmed to him, he would straighten out the notes in front of him, and look up at her. "Let this not be a waste of both our times, please. Tell me exactly what you know so you get the information you need, and I can get out of here faster." Just because he was 'forced' to do it (even thought he wasn't) didn't mean he had to be all sunshine about it.

Avis clutched the note from her tutor in one hand while her other hand was balled tightly into a fist. Oh how she had dreaded this afternoon. Professor Toussaint had pulled her aside into her office after Herbology a few days ago to finally confront Avis with the miserable grade in her class and she'd left with a tutor assignment and a sinking feeling in her stomach. The girl didn't understand. She had straight O's in every other class, but supposedly if she didn't get at least an A on the last few assignments of the year, she'd have to repeat the term. Avis shuddered as she remembered the feeling of her heart dropping into her feet at the news. She couldn't possibly be the first Greymond to fail a class. Even her older brother Will had passed all his classes so far at Hogwarts and he was... well, Will!
So here she stood, taking deep breaths in and out as she stared at the hard oak door of the study room. She was already at least 10 minutes late if not more, but her feet felt glued to the floor. Herbology of all subjects. After once again contemplating disappearing into the Forbidden Forest or perhaps the Great Lake (either would do), she steeled herself and wrenched open the door, marching inside and not stopping until she took the open seat across from the boy waiting for her. How utterly embarrassing that he was not only a boy, but a fellow first year, not to mention a Slytherin! Her house was supposed to be the wise one. She groaned internally.
"Can I assume your Avis?" he drawled, his tone heavy with his obvious aversion to the whole situation. Avis sighed, looking anywhere but his eyes.
"Mhm, that's me... Oliver," she mumbled, addressing him after glancing down hastily at the note to check his name mid-sentence. She supposed she could've been a bit more prepared but she'd never been good at remembering names anyway. No point in trying to prove that she was now.
"Let this not be a waste of both our times, please. Tell me exactly what you know so you get the information you need, and I can get out of here faster," he replied, brushing past any formalities. Oh, lovely. Her tutor seemed to be an absolute gobshite to top it all off. She grimaced as she desperately tried to contain the scalding glance attempting to shoot itself in Oliver's direction.
"And we can get out of here faster," she said under her breath and reached into her satchel for her Herbology notes. Avis rifled through a few of the pages before dropping them onto the table in front of them. "For your information, I'm not completely daft. Really the only thing I struggle with in class are the plant names and functions and well... plant care and which potions they're used in..." she trailed off realizing that she'd named probably just about every basic they'd covered so far. "I know how to kill most of them though," she added at the end, giving him a weak and very half hearted smile. She dropped it as soon as it had crossed her face.
"Look I just need at least an A. If you've got anything in this... mess that might help me, I'd be grateful," Avis said finally, gesturing at the piles of notes and textbooks laid out neatly on the table. God, she hated Herbology.

First impressions were always quite important to the boy, it told him all he needed to know about someone. And how they felt about him, and what they were doing. And currently he had gotten everything he needed to know about Avis from the few short words he had gotten so far. All the mumbling and grumbling, Professor Toussaint had never informed him of the fact his tutee was a form of troll. He raised an eyebrow but held back from a comment. Choosing to take a deep breath instead. Had he been a nicer person, or if he cared more about the task at hand, he would have offered a smile.
He was not a nice person, nor did he care about this at all. So Avis got no smile from him, Nothing but a small 'hmm' to indicated that he heard her. It soon became clear to him that she didn't want to do it either. With her correction of 'we'. Even though she had said it under her breath, Oliver had heard the grumblings and grumbles. He didn't care for it, if she was going to say something might as well make it able to be heard. Otherwise what was the point? He was no stranger to talking to himself, vocalizing his thoughts. That was simply that though, to himself, to him Avis was talking to him. Not to herself. "Very well, let's just get this over with."
A slight quirk of his eye brow could be seen when he was once again 'corrected'. Her claim of not being daft stook out. He looked at the papers she placed onto the desk as she spoke, her notes , much to his distaste, were not as neat as his. Really though he thought this about everyone's, her notes could be perfect and he would say it. They could also be god awful and he would say it still. He was biased of course. Always favoring his own handy work compared to others. He let out a sigh and was tempted to pinch the bridge of his nose as she listed everything she needed help with. Aka, all the basics that had been covered in class.
"Anyone carless enough can kill a plant, it's not hard to do." He told her with a roll of his eyes. He sighed again, unsure how to start with this girl. He looked up at her not trying to smile, he didn't feel she deserved one. After all she was the one who needed a tutor not him. He may be rude, but very deep down, he was a good person. Under the rude and gruffness of it all. He did have a heart contrary to popular belief in some of Hogwarts muggle born population. Her goal was average here, well- acceptable. Not to him of course, he needed to aim for the best. His few E's were a constant un intchable itch in the back of his mind.
How she could deal with an A was beyond him. "A is easy enough, I think I can help you." Oliver looked down at his notes, he could help her. Just figuring out how was the challenge. Things normally came naturally to him, names of plants came easier then names of people. He opened up the text book to the page on Mandrakes, one of the first plants covered. He thought they might be easy to remember with there- memorable scream. He didn't know how bad her memory was, but this was a safe bet. "I don't know if it will help you, but memorizing the names of plants may be easier if you associate it with a memorable feature of them." Oliver turned the book so the text and images were facing her. "The mandrake for example, there cry can knock people out when it's an infant and even kill when it grows to an adult."
He had said all of this when looking at the book, pointing to the text where the information was said, and only looked up at her when he finished talking. "Does that make any sense?" Oliver Armani had never really taught someone before, he had no clue if he was doing it right or not. His ego wouldn't let him think otherwise. Of course he was doing it right. If she didn't get it, it of course had to be her fault. Not his.

“Brilliant, then I’ve already got an ‘O’ when it comes to that part of Herbology,” Avis replied sarcastically to her tutor’s comment about killing plants. She leaned forward with a huff, resting her chin on one of her palms and blowing a stray hair out of her face.
As much as the girl desperately wanted to shove all her notes in Oliver’s lap and march out, she couldn’t afford to because the truth of the matter was, Avis was desperate. And desperation didn’t mix well with an unwilling tutor. So after he confirmed an A would be possible, she flashed him the most enthusiastic smile she could muster (which was a poor excuse for one really) and did her best to look attentive. I refuse to be the only Greymond with a Troll, she repeated over and over again in her head, before Oliver got started with his lesson.
At his mention of ‘memorizing’ however, Avis began to doubt the ‘A’ possibility. Her memory was historically terrible when it came to something she wasn’t already interested in like all of her other classes but as she began to despair, Oliver held up the textbook with a picture of a squalling baby plant printed inside. The fact he spewed out was just as interesting and Avis couldn’t help but listen to him drawl on about Mandrakes. They could kill people with just noise? How did that possibly even work? Did their insides melt from the sound waves? A wicked grin slowly crossed her face as question after question crossed her mind. She considered vocalizing a few after Oliver asked her if it made any sense.
“Yes actually I think it does,” Avis answered distractedly, peering at the book. She vaguely remembered discussing these in class but the Ravenclaw was too busy thinking about how much she wanted to leave rather than pay any mind to an Herbology lecture.
She glanced up at her tutor who was doing a rather good job at looking down his nose at her but the curious girl could care less about his disdain now. He’d somehow peaked her interest in her least favorite subject of all time and she almost hated him for it but at the same time…
“So the plants can kill back, eh? How does a full grown Mandrake do it exactly? And how long would I be stunned for if I encounterd a baby one? Could I silence it somehow? Or make the sound just bearable enough to hear it but not die?…Y’know, since it could be important to know for class,” Avis added hastily, not wanting to appear too eager. It was annoying that the stuck up Slytherin in front of her had succeeded and she grimaced at the thought but her quill sat in her hand poised and ready to take notes all the same.
