Avis blushed, heat rising to her cheeks at the other girl's sarcastic tone.
"As a matter of fact, he hadn't seen me yet and I was getting a pretty good look before you came along," she retorted, realizing her cover had been blown but going along with it anyway. Avis realized almost comically that the girl was speaking in hushed tones. What had this boy done to her that she was practically tiptoeing around him now? She glanced down at her, her eyes narrowing as the girl lowered her voice to practically a whisper.
"No, he's not a friend. He's just... I cornered him earlier this morning and he flung a spell at me to try and get me to go away. I'm going to figure him out, but today is not the day," she said, pushing a few strands of dark hair out of her face. Avis' eyebrows rose in alarm at the spell-flinging bit.
"He what?!" she gasped, glancing around at a few students passing by who were giving the two girls curious glances. Avis lowered her voice as well. "What in Merlin's name did you corner him for?"
For the second time during their lovely conversation, the first year wondered if this girl knew what the boy was, or... seemed to be, as she hadn't quite proven to herself that he was what she thought he was. Goodness, it was getting confusing up in her head. She gave her counterpart a sidelong glance. "And what exactly does 'figure him out' mean?" she continued, probing a bit.

Avis hopped back a bit at the girl's outburst at Avis' explanation. She hadn't thought it was that big of a deal, really, but apparently, she was wrong. "What in Merlin's name did you corner him for?"
Avis regretted her choice of words slightly in saying that, and she rubbed the back of her neck as she rethought her wording. "I wouldn't say I cornered him, I guess, more like he was wandering through the halls at six in the morning like a zombie, so I wanted to make sure he was okay. I was trying to get him to go to bed, and I was asking him questions. He's not a very good liar." Avis frowned, remembering Oliver's really quite lame excuses as to where he had been. Clearly he was hiding something."Look, Oliver's tired, I don't think he meant it." She fell into her thoughts, distracted, until the girl asked what figuring him out meant. Avis hesitated for a moment, debating. She didn't really know that well, she supposed. "Well I don't know, I guess to figure out why he was lying?" Really, she just wanted to help him. She couldn't believe there were no second years who would be willing to help him out. Her determination shone through, and without realizing it she stood a little bit taller.

Hmm, wandering through the halls at six in the morning? Unusually tired? It was all adding up. Avis glanced at the girl standing across from her, a suspicious look on her face.
"Lying, huh? I suppose he looked pretty worse for wear than, aye? Limping a bit?" she questioned. If he'd been limping at six this morning before she'd seen him at breakfast, that meant he'd had to be doing something the night before that caused him to be in such terrible shape. And looking like he'd had very little sleep was not helping his case. She wasn't the only witness now. Maybe this strange girl could help her prove the boy's... wolfness. She hoped the other Ravenclaw's intentions were pure. In her own case, Avis was simply taking the initiative to solve a mystery because, as per usual, her curiosity had won out, but she knew there were some wizards and witches out there that wished to bring only harm to those that weren't fully human.
Regardless, at least she knew his name now, if she could remember it. Avis committed the name to memory. Oliver. Speaking of names, she stuck out her hand for an introduction.
"My name is Avis, by the way. Avis Greymond," she said confidently, waiting for the other girl to grip her hand. "And I might be able to tell you what he was hiding if we can figure out how to trust each other a bit."

The girl was looking at Avis suspiciously. Avis didn't have the foggiest idea why. Had she said something? Oh, well, she really didn't care that much anyway. Still, she narrowed her eyes a bit. She was then questioned about her interaction with Oliver earlier in the day. Why did this girl care so much?
Avis snickered a bit as she remembered Oliver's lame excuse. "He told me that he had been in the Hufflepuff common room the whole night, but I shouldn't ask any of his classmates. And worse for wear? He was basically half-dead." Really, she was surprised he was still up and walking. She would've thought he would be passed out or something by now. He was really intent on making it to classes it seemed.
She gripped the girl's offered handshake firmly and started laughing as Avis(G) introduced herself. It was a really good thing that she had stopped this girl from talking to Oliver, he would have thought she was messing with him. There had to be what, 50,000 Avis' in all the world? The chances were not very high. She shook her head a little bit in disbelief, before unclasping her hand and taking a step back. "Nice to meet you Avis, my name's Avis. You had me until the trust, you're welcome to trust me, but I can't say I'll quite trust you. Trust is a hard thing to earn."

The girl snickered to herself before answering Avis' questions. "He told me that he had been in the Hufflepuff common room the whole night, but I shouldn't ask any of his classmates. And worse for wear? He was basically half-dead," she said, reminiscing.
Avis nodded. Yes, it was all coming together. Oliver really needed to work on his excuses. That response was much too obvious and truly just a bit sad. She was almost surprised that this girl hadn't put 2 and 2 together but she supposed not everyone in the Great Hall was pretending their classmates were non-humans for a silly imaginary game, only to find out that one of them actually was.
After introducing herself, the other gripped her hand and immediately started laughing. Avis stared in her in utter confusion. Had she said something funny? Was she laughing at her name? She didn't think it was really anything out of the ordinary. She didn't know many Avises but it was a normal enough name to not be immediately laughed out of the conversation. The Ravenclaw was about to ask her classmate what exactly was so humorous when she finally responded to Avis' initial introduction.
"Nice to meet you Avis, my name's Avis," the other girl said, shaking her head in disbelief. Greymond's mouth formed into a small surprised 'O'. What were the odds? The other Avis continued. "You had me until the trust, you're welcome to trust me, but I can't say I'll quite trust you. Trust is a hard thing to earn."
Avis G. faltered at the girl's strange assessment of trust. In her experience, it usually worked both ways. And if trust was so hard to earn with... the other Avis, she assumed it might be the other way around as well. After all, the suspicious type usually ended up being hard to trust themselves. Besides, she couldn't have this girl blabbing about Oliver's identity to the whole school, especially if she herself wasn't 100% sure. Maybe she would take a leaf out of the other Avis' book and would keep her findings to herself for now. Perhaps wait for an opportunity to tell her later?
"Ok..." Avis replied slowly," Well, nice to meet you... Avis." They really had to come up with nicknames or something. She was already confusing herself with the names. "So when do you think would be a good time to talk to this Oliver if you aren't so keen to do it now?" she asked, attempting to form somewhat of a plan. It seemed like curiosity had linked the two Avises together for now.

Grey-what Avis had taken to referring to the other Avis in her mind-faltered a bit, though Avis couldn't tell if it was from having the same name or her excessively blunt observation about trust. She would concede that it was incredibly blunt, and not likely to be said by many people, but Avis didn't really care what was likely. She didn't want to pretend that she trusted everyone on a whim. It was really inconvenient that everyone was literally asking her to trust them. That was really common here, it seemed, everyone being much too blunt than they needed to be. Avis fit right in.
Either way, Grey didn't comment on her point and returned the formalities, inquiring as to when they should track down Oliver. "I was thinking of trying to catch him the next time he is out all night. I'm not sure how well it'll work, but..." She shrugged. She honestly didn't have much of a plan at this point, really she had only talked to Oliver an hour ago, but she had found his name, and thought she was doing well. "I don't actually know when that will be though, so if you have any ideas, I'm open." To an extent. She didn't want someone coming in and ruining everything.

Avis did, in fact, have a pretty good idea of when the boy might again be spending the entire night out and she figured, if this ended up being the plan, that having someone else there while she was trying to catch sight of a werewolf mid-transformation might not be such a terrible idea. She wasn’t quite yet sure of how she felt about this strange, blunt character of a girl but they had similar goals and she supposed that that was enough to join efforts at the moment. She cleared her throat and leaned a bit closer.
“I don’t know the exact date yet but I can definitely find out,” she whispered, “We’re either going to need to ask someone who knows their Astrology quite well or at least consult a book about it.”
She leaned back to watch the other Avis’ face carefully. The first year had been quite vague on purpose but she supposed if she was going to have to tell this other girl eventually, she might as well start dropping hints now. Who knew? Maybe she would pick it up on her own at some point, but Avis didn’t know if she could trust her completely just yet.
All she knew was that she would have to tell her before this other Avis found herself observing a werewolf, completely unprepared.

“I don’t know the exact date yet but I can definitely find out, We’re either going to need to ask someone who knows their Astrology quite well or at least consult a book about it.” Well, that was convenient but why would they need an Astrology-ohh. Right. Avis had honestly kind of forgotten that not everyone here was completely human. Her realization was evident on her face, as her mouth formed a small O, but it only lasted for a second before returning to her resting face. It was still strange to Avis that werewolves even existed, much less went to school at Hogwarts with everyone else. She didn't know much about them at all.
But that made so. much. sense. How had she not put that together? Grey must think she's a complete nimrod. Grey had figured it out just from watching him leave the hall, and she hadn't figured it out after talking to him? Well, now she had sort of figured out what the whole point was, but she still wanted to help the guy. "Why do you want to find Oliver?"
She also didn't really think it was necessary to ask someone who was really good at Astrology. Wasn't it just a full moon? That really wasn't that complicated of a thing to find out.

As the realization dawned on Marlong’s face, Avis nodded along slowly as she witnessed the idea beginning to form in the other girl’s head. Brilliant. At least her immediate reaction hadn’t been doubt. Avis had been a bit worried the girl might not have believed her at all if she suggested Oliver might be part wolf.
"Why do you want to find Oliver?“ Marlong asked. Avis figured this was a valid question, seeing as half breed prejudice was a widespread trend among wizarding communities. She cocked her head and shrugged.
“To be honest, I’m not entirely sure. I suppose I feel a bit bad for him and maybe someone else knowing about his… situation might be relieving. Then again, I think I’m just trying to prove that I’m right about my hunch,” she joked. “He’s already tried to blast you with a spell though so why do you want to approach him again?” Avis followed up, watching the other girl’s face. as she waited for a response.
Once they’d established their reasoning, Avis realized they would need some sort of plan, starting with the date of the next full moon which wasn’t something she exactly knew off the top of her head. Who could she ask without drawing too much suspicion? Maybe Marlong already knew?

Oliver had turned the corner quite a while ago, and Avis thought she had distracted this girl long enough. But now Grey was questioning her motivations, and Avis thought it only proper to reply. She spoke slowly, as if she was the only thinking of it now, and really, she was only putting it into words now, although it had been her motivation for a while.
"Because he needs help." Avis wrinkled her forehead. Ugh. That was her motivation? That was unlike her. Regardless, it was what it was, nothing she could do about it now.
Avis thought about what they should do next. If Oliver was a werewolf, then it was pretty obvious when they should look for him next. The full moon. Obviously. But Grey seemed to be unsure of when that is, looking for an Astronomy book. It was the moon phases! All they had to do was look it--right. Internet didn't exist here. For a minute, Avis wondered if there was a spell, an "information seeker" spell. But alas, she supposed Grey waws right. They were going to have to find a book, or someone who knew more about it.
She looked at Grey. "I'll find out when the next full moon is." She gave the girl a mock salute. "Until then..." She spun in a circle and headed down the hall in the same direction Oliver had gone.
I will owl you +Oliver tonight for next steps:)
