Evelynn pulled free the blindfold, working to swiftly reorient herself as she did. Unfortunately, her perspective remained hilter-kilter as though upside down. Even astride her broom in the worst rain, she had never quite felt so turned around. Left was right and up was down and it was only by some miracle that the snakes elected not to target her for the duration it took to somewhat acclimate. The same could not be said for Silmataurea who seemed to attract explosion after explosion and was beginning to look worse for wear because of it. Things were not looking good for Gryffindors' most senior team, that was for sure. Not ones to give up just because they'd been put in defense, though, Evelynn adjusted the grip of her wand and tried to assess how best to turn the tides.

There were not many things that Galton missed about being younger. If he raked his brain he'd be hard pressed to find more reasons than would be countable with one hand alone. But if you asked him for just one thing he missed, he would answer you instantly. Flipendo. Only Merlin truly knew how much he missed that cursed jinx. Because where there was once an endless barrage of flipendos, there was now an never-ending field of explosions.

Maybe it was exactly this horrid nostalgia that made him turn his attention ever so much upon hearing Ruby's incantation. Confringo was always a cause for concern. So much so that the wild ventus pointed his way was side-stepped on auto-pilot. But he wouldn't be able to escape the Confringo like so.

Ears ringing and body stinging his grip tightened on his wand. There was no longer room for the errors he'd been making. How had he ever thought flipendos stung so bad? "I don't think I will ever get used to getting hit like that." He'd mutter to no one in particular.

It felt good to flip a strategy that had long been used against them on its head, leveraging the Trip Jinx to pull Meenauh's feet out from under her while Ruby and Astrea lined up their own spells. Between Ruby's spread Confringo and Astrea's masterful split Ventus, they made for a terrifying force, explosions and wind creating a truly chaotic scene. One that Slytherin clearly came out on top of, even if Bridget stumbled back from the more minor explosion of a Cracker Jinx in her face, blinking away bright spots. Now they had some real momentum to press.

Now that was much better. Ruby made up for the previous round with a doubly successful Blasting Curse, and it was music to her ears. The corner of her lips curled into a small, self-satisfied smirk. She would be lying if she said she didn't relish this chaos more than a little bit...

The duel had started out so explosively, Jake was sure that it wasn't going to last long. How COULD anybody last long against firepower like that? But Meenauh would then do something that Jake had never seen, something that would certainly throw cold water over the duel - or at least give it a shock. The girl rose her wand into the air and a dome-like shockwave expanded amongst all of the duelists, friend and foe alike! Only Ruby was able to resist it!

And perhaps that was what threw off the Slytherin assault. Because all of their castings began to go awry! Bridget tried to disarm Evelynn, who was surely still suffering from the effects of the limbo mist, but her spell drifted just off course. Ruby's spell drifted off course too - her explosive spell had also been heading towards Evelynn, but it drifted towards Meenauh who had just shocked almost all of them. Meenauh would escape, just barely, but she would still feel the effects. And then Astrea tried to hit Galton with an impediment jinx to slow him down, only to find that the lion was too nimble. Maybe had Meenauh not shocked her she might have been able to hit him, but as it was, this gave the Gryffindors time to regroup that they sorely needed.

Evelynn, taking advantage of the distraction, and perhaps knowing that it would be hard to strike the others with her senses so off, decided to heal her team - something Meenauh desperately needed. And Galton would cloak the stage in fog, something Jake had seen him do many times before - a smart move for somebody that was as good at seeing through rough conditions as he was.

Had they swung the tides ? Time would tell, but it certainly was a pause that the lions had needed. A calm before the storm? Almost certainly

Anticipating a major assault, Meenauh couldn't just stay there weakened and had to do something. She loved spells that affected everyone, just as powerful they were, even with their disadvantages. Normally, she'd go with Lumos Maxima, but the duel was as fast as a centaur at midnight, so her choice fell on the Shocking one. The one she wanted to cast for quite a while now.

And it worked to some extent. Maybe not the greatest cast as Ruby seemed to resist the wave, but at least no spells did major harm. Her price to pay was a bunch of flinders that unfortunately got into her as she jumped off the bright Confringo. She playfully showed a tongue to Ruby and smiled, preparing to what was going to happen next. She thought she knew what.

With fog rising to coat the snakes Galton couldn’t help feel a little relieved. Galton’s bias towards the creamy blanket obscuring everyone’s view was nothing new. As he took a calm, deep breath his thoughts couldn’t help but turn back to those just before.

His dislike for confringo. How could he have forgotten one of the worst parts of the spell? Not only did it pack an insane punch, but even if it missed, you were bound to take some damage from everything it hurt around it. At least you could dodge a flipendo.

Even in a duel of familiar teammates and opponents, there were still moments of shock. A literal shockwave, to be exact. She'd lined up a disarming spell at Evelynn, intent to limit the moving parts they had to worry about for a moment, but the blast threw her off balance and the spell nowhere close to where it was meant to go. By the time she'd recovered from stumbling, she could barely make out Astrea or Ruby, hidden in a thick cover of fog. At least they were all still standing, and despite the environmental shake-up, not much had changed.

It seemed that their final year's tournament would be one filled with all manner of experimentation, for twice now had completely untested spells graced the piste. Though all-encompassing in its electricity, the shocking area effect served to unbalance Astrea's accuracy more than truly harm her. Considering duelling's typical lethality, the absence of pain was stranger still than its existence. Taken shamefully off-guard by the unconventional spellwork, her own cast had veered completely off its mark, the brilliant turquoise light overtaken by a shroud of thick fog. Yet she had two small mercies. Astrea was far from the only one to stumble from the shock and, most pressingly, that seemed to be the extent of Gryffindor's current wrath. Even as she waited, no greater destruction pierced the veil, so familiarly blinding as it was. It appeared that their opponents had fallen back towards biding their time. A brief respite, if Astrea could consider the round of relative status-quo such, yet one worth perpetual demonstration nonetheless.

Interesting. She hadn't yet encountered the Shocking Area Spell in a duel of hers before. Unfortunately—likely as a result of that—the Slytherins were less successful than last round. Even Ruby, who hadn't felt she was impacted too badly by the shockwave, didn't hit the target she had intended, but at least one of the Gryffindors still caught some of the splinters from her spell. Meenauh stuck out her tongue, making a corner of Ruby's lips curl into an amused half-smile. In duels, Ruby tried to remain distant and appear cold even towards people she liked, but this was so unexpected that it caused a little bit of warmth to break through regardless.
