Beneath The Surface
Another loud splash accompanied the rock that hit the water. Phoenix had been sat here throwing rocks into the lake for around 20 minutes just allowing herself to think. It was difficult to quite get her head around everything in this place. The castle was huge and there was just so much to learn. She enjoyed it but sometimes it was nice to just be outside.
Phoenix found the lake mesmerising. The sheer number of things that could inhabit the deep, dark water was intriguing for her. She shuffled herself a little closer again, her feet merely inches away from the edge now. She had managed to find a spot that was relatively out of the way and there were some trees right next to the waters edge that could be leant on. She knew that students weren’t allowed to swim in the lake without supervision but she would be lying if she said she wasn’t tempted.
The sound of footsteps from a little ways up the bank pulled Phoenix from her thoughts. She hoped that maybe it was a deer or something, she wasn’t actually in the lake but she was probably sat closer than she should have been.

Beneath The Surface
[quote]Dale never really went outside his first year at Hogwarts, but spending the majority of summer at the summer camp had given him a new appreciation of the great outdoors, one of his favorite places was the lake, he liked to go there to study or just read for hours. He also frequently visited the forest to look for flowers or herb to add to his collection and put next to his bed. Walks were also a pleasant experience, but he rarely went on them due to the fear of getting lost.
This particular day was a wonderful one light breeze and shining sun, a bit hot, but not bad under shade. School had just about started but the homework hadn't really been stacked on yet, so he had some time to do some self-study. He checked out a potions book from the library and started on his way to his favorite spot, the lake.
He was wearing his regular clothes, a pair of jeans and a dark green shirt. His was a mess, as usual, he had considered cutting it for a while but decided not to do it. The potions book he had was just a book explain the various herbs used in potion-making, a subject Dale enjoyed thoroughly.
As Dale walked to his spot, he heard the sounds, someone was probably just throwing rocks. As he continued to walk he ran into a girl.

Beneath The Surface
Phoenix turned around as the footsteps got louder and she saw a boy walking in her direction. She recognised his face and messy hair from the Slytherin table but wasn’t sure who he was. She smiled at him welcomingly in case he decided to join her before turning back towards the lake.
The sun reflected off the surface of the lake, highlighting Phoenix’s face from the scar above her left eyebrow to the dimples in her cheeks. It was a nice day and she had decided to wear some shorts and her Wimbourne Wasps top. Her long blonde hair was down, as usual, and the natural waves were barely brushed. She didn’t have much time for make up or worrying about her hair. She found it to be tedious and there were other things she would much rather be doing.
She looked over at the boy again. Although she often liked to just sit and think, she was also keen to make friends and a part of her hoped that maybe he would join her. She didn’t count on it though, looking back to the lake again. She knew he was in an older year and he probably didn’t want to speak to some random first year.

Beneath The Surface
As Dale got closer to the lake his suspicion was correct, a girl was skipping rocks on the lake. He vaguely recognized the girl from the sorting ceremony, she was a first-year and was a fellow house member. While he usually liked spending time alone and in silence, but the sound of rocks hitting the water was oddly soothing, and the girl didn't seem to mind him.
He went over to the tree and took a sir, the grass felt like a nice east, and the trunk provided a nice backrest, the leaves provided the perfect protection against the beating sun. The only thing that bothered him about sunny days where the shadows cast onto the pages of his book.
The book he was reading was "The Hobbit", it was one of his favorite books, and his mother's favorite book, she read it to him many times as a child. It seemed like the library didn't keep many if any, muggle books. So Dale had made sure to bring all of his favorites this year.
He remembered the first time he found this spot during summer camp, almost no one came here, but it was good to know that this great spot was being used more. As to make sure the girl wouldn't mind him being there, he asked D-do you mind me sitting h-here.

Beneath The Surface
The boy continued to approach as Phoenix picked up another, flatter rock, skipping it across the lake. It bounced 3 times before sinking with a splash. Phoenix smiled to herself, memories of skipping rocks in the small lake at the back of their garden flashing to the forefront of her mind. Her mum had taught her how to do it when she was young, maybe 5 or 6, and it was a skill that you never forgot.
She leaned back against the tree, another rock in hand, just holding it this time. She turned it over and over in her hands, one side smooth and light grey, the other chipped showing the white layer beneath the surface. The light breeze was cooling in comparison to the glaring sun and Phoenix was thankful that the tree was providing some shade for her.
She was pulled out of her thoughts from a voice next to her. It made her jump a little as she hadn’t realised the boy had sat there but she smiled as she replied. “Sure,”
The boy appeared to be holding a book in his hand and Phoenix turned her head slightly, trying to get a view of what it was. She made out the title ‘The Hobbit’. It wasn’t something that she recognised and she looked up a little puzzled. “What’s that book about?”
