Water wasn't exactly common for Sandy to be around.

She loved it, yes. Pools and water balloons, but it was too much of a hassle to take the road trip out to see the ocean, let alone larger bodies of water. It was always a dream of hers, to be in some tropical place with water surrounding her. Beach volleyball... Warm sun... Oh, it was just too good to be true. Out in some little cabin-esque home, maybe with a lover to call her own...-

-Husband. Not... Lover. Too broad of a category, right?

She landed on the shore beside the lake with a thump, allowing her head to tilt to the side, resting on her shoulder. Her knees were close to her chest, carefully trying to maintain the warmth of her body heat. It wasn't particularly difficult for her, given her already somewhat abnormal warmth. A walking heater, her momma would joke. Maybe that's why she would always sweat around other girls? Anxiety and her upped body heat? She'd have to ponder that later.

For now, her focus was on the water surface, spanning out. Her glasses were nowhere to be found, the cracked lenses likely misplaced somewhere before she had left, leaving her unfortunately unable to see the closer details of the lake. It was something she mourned daily, lightly questioning if sitting too close to the TV really did mess up her vision. As far as she knew though, her vision had always been this terrible.

Raising a hand, Sandy took a gander at checking it. As she suspected, blurry. She could make out a few small movements of her fingers, careful to move her pinky and middle finger in fear of breaking it once more. A stupid sentiment, yes, the possibility of breaking her finger just by raising it and moving it a little bit, but she didn't want to risk it. What was her decision would stay her decision... Though she still messed with it a little bit, curling her pinky up and down, if only just to watch how the foggy picture bobbed up and down. A game.

Blinking away the headache that began to lightly prod at her from trying to focus her vision so much, she returned her gaze to the lake, letting her hand drop against the cold ground. So chilled by November air, Sandy couldn't help but feel a little bit disappointed. Maybe it would be better in the summer, but... She didn't quite have hope. It was difficult to look forward to much when she already felt too outcasted. Really, what was up with all the fancy-smancy people at Hogwarts? Back at home everyone was just... Normal.

Maybe this was normal for them, but she didn't feel that way. It had taken her far too long to become acquainted with normal life, she didn't need the same with- Wizard life. God, sometimes she felt like she was in some stupid fantasy novel. Not that she reads fantasy novels, of course. She'd never do that... Not like she could, her attention span wasn't the greatest.

A small ringing comment of mudblood sounded through her ears, eliciting a small frown to play against her chewed lips. Really, what was that? How could someone have mud in their blood of all places? And why was she called that? What was the point? Boys were stupid. It was the cooties getting to their brains, she swore. Hopefully they'd mature, but knowing the boys in her family... She couldn't be certain. If her uncle was still using reckless things to light cigarettes, like blowtorches... Maybe boys would never mature. Immature boys would mean unfit husbands...

There goes her dreams of a tropical cottage with a husband. Maybe she could find a friend? That'd be kind of awkward though... Sharing a house with a girl... Waking up and seeing her everyday... Well, it didn't sound entirely unpleasant. But! She'd never do that! Because! It's weird! Obviously!

All British water is depressing, Anella concluded. Half dead from her last transformation, she stumbled to the shore in search of peace, healing, perhaps. Her dad talks about taking a trip to the beach every time he gets stressed at work, the natural elements like the sun and the sea helping him bounce back from dealing with infuriating people. But there was no sun in mid-november. Only the quiet water that murmured easily, and the stone under her shoes that was uneven. Before she came, she had the good idea of changing from her school shoes into a pair of her beat up sneakers from home – but like most good ideas, she ignored it.
She focused on the horizon, squinting her eyes to see nothing in particular. Herbology was even more exhausting than usual, especially after she crashed into someone and was made to apologize for making them drop the planter they were carrying. The girl wasn’t even looking at where she was going! She really didn’t need that today, on the edge of trying to bite the girl in human form.
About two dozen feet away from her, she saw another kid. A gryffindor, blonde, long haired. Small. Anne took a few steps towards her, before suddenly growing shy and second guessing herself. The gryffindor was curled up, maybe they were crying? She really couldn’t deal with a crying person right now, barely keeping herself together after the, figuratively, stormy day she had.
No. Dad would want her to help someone in need. Always. What did it cost her to listen to someone's troubles? Nothing. It only added a possibility of growing closer with someone, she recalled her fathers philosophy.
A step, then another. Then she was close enough to see that the figure wasn’t shaking, or sobbing for that matter. That’s a relief. She stalked closer until she was only a couple feet away, and cleared her throat.
“Hi.” She started, a clear voice cutting through the graveyard quiet of the great lake. “Are… are you alright?” She questioned, bringing her hand up to curl a blonde strand of bang hair around her pointer finger. Anella thought about asking another question, but by then a few seconds had already passed, and it would have been awkward. She shifts on her feet, sparing a thought to putting her hood on to keep out the cold from her ears, but then that would’ve been even *more* eerie on her part. Just stalk up to a random girl with a hood on, asking her if she was fine or not? Well… there wasn’t anything wrong with it, but it was just more normal to not have a hood on.
She bites her lip, taking another careful step towards the girl, before taking a steady step back. She would’ve been basically looming over the girl if she stood any closer, and the last thing she needed was for the girl to get frightened. It’s not like she looked particularly sweet right now, her green eyes dulled by the pale background of her sickly skin, her hair frizzy from careless brushing this morning, and her movements sluggish from lack of rest.

Straightening out her posture almost instinctively, like a folded sheet of metal springing back up, Sandy turned her head to the voice. Her eyes were wide for a moment, body contorted at an odd angle in order for her to properly look back.

Oh. She couldn't... See much.

Wincing, Sandy fully turned towards the person, promptly leaning a fair bit back and squinting her eyes. The figure was clearer now, albeit still blurry due to the absolutely disgusting state of her vision, but she could make out proper details. Her eyes skimmed over the nearby person, chewing at her lip as she jotted down anything she could get into her head. From how little she could piece together an appearance, this girl(?) was still rather pretty. A bit messy, but wasn't that endearing? People who were always pristine... Intimidated her, in a way. It was a nice change from the oddly rich looking people who surrounded her at this school.

Clearing her throat at the awkward realization that she had been staring silently at the stranger, Sandy tried to recollect her thoughts. The question... Something something... Oh! "Ah- Yes! Was just thinking, mhm. Did you want to sit here? I can leave, if it's a bother for someone else to be in your space. Not the very best for when you wanna reflect on yourself, or maybe just imagine you're in some Twilight-esque movie."

Bella was really overdramatic. Really? Depressed over some guy leaving her? If anything, Sandy would be more than okay with some bloodsucker not being near her. She much preferred her blood inside her body, as most sane people do! Bella, apparently, did not feel the same. Certainly not according to how often she got injured.

...As if on cue, her pinky finger felt an odd stinging sensation. Even if not really injured anymore, there was still flashes of phantom pain that lingered. She questioned if aunt Mari felt the same way somedays... Not having a few fingers isn't entirely the worst, but it had to suck.

"You can be honest with that question, by the way. Won't hurt my lil ol' feelings if you want me to go somewhere else," Sandy flashed a smile, the faint outlines of weirdly sharp teeth exposed, "We all just need a bit of peace and quiet sometimes, yeah? Unless you like being around other people. Not sure if a stranger is ideal company, but I wouldn't complain."

Shifting in her spot, she once more took a chance at examining the other. Past the faint headache that had begun to pulse against her forehead and the frustration at not being able to properly see who she was talking to, it wasn't entirely unideal of a situation. She couldn't really complain, now could she? Her own fault visually.

"I, uh, also apologize for staring. See, I don't have my glasses with me, and- I like to keep people in my head when I see them. So I'm just... Trying to get your picture in my head without being properly able to see you. What a shame, ey?"

Anella raised her eyebrows, amused, as the girl droned. The gryffindors accent made her eyes light up a little bit, a small smile on her face as the girl apologized for nothing other than existing in Anella’s presence. She’s going to address that in a second.
“No, gosh, I don’t mind! You were here first, anyhow.” She squats down ineptly, gracelessly, to match other students' line of sight, but she noticed she was still a little taller than the girl. “Are you also from London? What’s your name?” Anella asked, hugging her knees tightly so as to not fall back on her butt. It was bad enough she got her shoes dirtied up, she doesn’t need her coat to suffer too. She hoped being closer to the girl would allow her to see Anella better, so she wouldn’t have to strain so much. Her happy little grin was nothing short of genuine curiosity, and dare she say, excitement. She knew London was not a small town, but she hasn’t met anyone from there yet, weirdly enough. But then again, she started making friends a little later into the year than most. Anything can happen to your personality when you’re not even just switching schools, mind you, but switching worlds! She got a little shy during the first month or two of Hogwarts, but decided one morning that she’s gonna put herself out there, damn what the rest of the kids think! And this is her doing that.
She, after a beat, decided to introduce herself as well. “I’m Anella Vaugh!” She put her hand out quickly, ready to show off her firm handshake that adults loved to comment on, but the sudden change of position threw her balance off, her other hand flying to hold herself so she doesn’t completely fall back. She stiffles a squeak, then an embarrassed giggle, her outstretched hand turning into a fist as she tried not to make a joke out of herself further. She does lower herself to the ground, making a mental note to dust off her coat later, before mindlessly commenting.
“Well, colour me glad that you can’t see me right now!” She looked at the other kid, and genuinely meant it. She halfheartedly reminisces about her old friend group back in London, how they would never let her live something like this down. It was all jokes, of course, she did it right back to them. That sort of teasing care they held for all one-another was the only thing holding the group together, most of them being nothing like Anne in any way. She faux cleaned off her hands by dusting them off of each other, an automatic move, before putting her hand out again, a manual one. “Wait, can you see me when I’m this close? Are you nearsighted or farsighted?” She questions, growing a bit red at the possibility of the girl actually seeing all that clearly, then bites her lip. She’s bombarding her with so many questions, the poor thing probably went here to be left alone. An awkward smile finds her bitten lips, as to ease her own tension, and she hopes the other is farsighted to save herself the embarrassment.

Silly. This girl was silly. Now, Sandy didn't know much about her, nor how this girl truly was, but it was awfully cute at how she acted. From the muffled line of sight, she watched as the figure crouched down. It was uneasy, clumsy, and oh so lovely. She didn't comment on how it was even harder to actually see her now that she was closer, nor did she comment on the fact that she wasn't totally unable to see the movements and actions.

A small laugh bubbled from her throat, mentally jotting down the two questions, "I am, sadly. Would'a preferred somewhere warmer, but I can't complain." A pause, "Oh, and- My name is Sandy. Uh- Sandy... Thompson? I-I didn't realize last names were an important part to add. Hah- If my brother was here, he would've made some stupid comment about it."

Alright, Sandy. Dropping family relations already? What happened to being normal and not having a weirdo for a brother, huh? Scolding herself mentally, she chewed at the inside of her cheek. Instead, she directed her attention to the name, rolling it around in her mind a few times to commit it to memory. Anella. It was the first time she had ever really heard of that name... Maybe she just didn't know enough people, it was probably common.

"It's a pretty name." Sandy nodded, "Suits you!- Well, suits you from- Y'know, what I know about you. Which- Is a very small amount, but... I dunno, I think at some point I meant to say you were pretty, but then I lost track of my own words. Can I really even see you? No, but- You seem like it? Like, silly, I guess. And- Oh!"

A fumbled reaction. Sandy outreached a hand, a panicked offer for stability no matter the fact that Anella had already controlled the situation. Her eyes strained to focus, attempting to determine whether she was fine or not, hand lingering out for a moment longer just to make sure before slowly dropping to her side.

"I don't know if I'm too happy about not being able to see you. Y'know, it really makes this whole conversation thing way more difficult. Like- Yeah, obviously I can talk and stuff, but I like seeing who I'm talking to." She pouted, shaking her head. Silently, she cursed either herself or her birth givers for the lack of eyesight. Pushing the blame onto people she didn't even know seemed pretty easy in theory, but she couldn't actually decide whether those lab spawners were the ones with bad eyesight or if it was just her. Shameful. She should start an investigation. Not like she wanted to know who they were, though. Two perfectly good moms were already in her collection.

Too far gone in a little dreamland of her own creation, featuring a total lack of said former parents, Sandy hardly caught onto what was said, "Near or- Oh! Blindness, uhmmmm.... Farsighted, yeah. I can still technically see you, but you're like- A blob of colors, I guess. You- You're there, and I know that, but I don't really know how you look unless you were standing further away. Which- Well, doesn't seem preferable to me."

Eyes locked onto the small action, she slowly pushed her hand forward, attempting to properly communicate between her eyes and her hands as to where she was supposed to meet. It took a few seconds, but her hand eventually met the other girl's, clasping both hands around one to solidify that she had actually found the target. A small mumbled, "Sorry," was spoken, a slight flush to her cheeks apparent.

Anella furrowed her brows, tucking a blonde hair behind her ear, but her friendly smile soon returned. She scans the girl up and down in return, but unlike Sandy, she doesn’t need to squint. Sandy… what name could have more than a nickname? Maybe Sandra? Or Cassandra? What else… the girl is blonde, like her, but shes way shorter, even when sitting. She must be shorter when they’re standing as well. Well, now it only feels correct for Anella to tell Sandy her nickname now.
She offers a sympathetic face, but remembers that Sandy can’t quite see it right now, so she just makes her tone what she thinks sounds extra gentle. “Call me Anne, then! I usually say my last name because I think it leaves an impression. Like people are more likely to remember you if you say your full name.. I think.” She pauses, before shrugging. “I think it makes you seem more confident. And Sandy, girl, don’t worry yourself, please. People who talk tons are fun.” She says, but realises a second too late that that could offend her new acquaintance. Better change the topic before she can get confronted about it. “And thank you! Your name suits you too. You have hair that’s kind of a sandy colour. It is very nice.” She uses her free hand to vaguely motion to her hair, the other firmly shaking it for a few seconds.

“Jeez, your handshake is strong.” She comments, taken aback from how this awkward little thing has the strength that could send her father stuttering. He wasn’t very strong, but he claimed he was very fast. He claims to have been good at running from people… whatever that means. But Anella can and will; she hasn’t seen him run a single time after she turned five years old, one hand on her heart, the other on the bible. Actually, can she swear on the bible? She’s not really christian. Maybe she should stop saying that.
She looks somewhere in the distance, seemingly satisfied how she smoothed that over. Her hands drop next to her hip, before coming up to hug her knees.

“I’m guessing you’re also a first year, since you're smaller than me.” Anella comments, but nothing of that sentence really bears fruit. She almost falls into an awkward silence before she asks Sandy the following: “Do you like Hogwarts?”
A simple, stupid question really. Well, not stupid. Just something a stupid person could remember to ask. but Anella was curious – she has been liking it so far - the open discussion of magic, some of the subjects, some of the kids. Her bunk was pretty nice! She would say she liked it. But sometimes it all gets too much, which is why she ended up on the stone shore of the old castle.

“I know a lot of us – muggles – can sometimes have, um…” she stalls, before continuing “Trouble, acclimating, I guess? I mean I’m half blood, but I grew up in London, so I basically consider myself a muggle.” She explains, shifting in her seat while looking at the sky, looking deep in thought. Her old friends used to tease her that she would have the wisest face while coming up with the dumbest idea, and they weren’t really wrong. Most of them were cleverer, slyer than her – but she had magic. And a ton of soccer trophies. That was more than enough.

A small portion of Sandy's frustration at her lack of sight is lured away by the softened tone of the new visitor, palms still sweaty and distinctly calloused against the other's skin. It's nothing vibrant, yet there's a difference in how skin feels depending on the person - For Sandy, she certainly wasn't winning any awards for having the softest skin in town anytime soon, that was for sure. Not like she needed to, either way! Having rough hands just meant... Well, nothing positive, now that she thought of it. With so many scratches and injuries against the fragile skin, there was no other motive for the body to repair it other than to keep it from damaging again.

Pondering on the topic of memorable introductions, the blonde gives a small shrug of recognition, "I guess. I've never really been, ya'know, taught that way. You make things memorable through who you are... If it's anything, I'd say you're pretty, uh, easy to remember? I mean, it's not everyday that someone just- shows up while you're in the middle of watching a lake."

While she doesn't outright comment, there's a hint of disapproval at the nickname. Anne? In no universe was Sandy ever one to judge too much, but this was just something she could NOT stand for. She was 110% sure that she could come up with a better nickname without any ability to speak, and that's certainly saying something. This girl, the sweet thing she was, definitely deserved something better than. Well. Anne.

In her moment of distress at how poor the nickname was, she had hardly noticed the firm grip she had offered. If possible, her cheeks manage to flush more, a bright scarlet flood of blood coloring the tan skin. Within that second of the comment, the dampness of her hands are instead overtaken by a concerning heat, embarrassment scorching any portion of her body that it could find. It's almost a relief when Anella drops her hand, and she quickly takes it as a chance to wipe her hands free of that gross moist feeling.

No matter how thankful she was for being freed, there's a lingering hint of disappointment. Physical touch was important to her, and no matter the relationship to her, it felt distantly saddening to be released from that. Certainly overthinking it, but what else was she supposed to do? Pretend that she wasn't on the verge of sighing over some stranger letting go of her hand? Absolutely not! She was true to herself, and being true to herself meant being true to her emotions... Even the pathetic ones...

Hands now nicely cooled off with the chill of the day, one is brought up to scratch at the bridge of her nose, listening to the blurry figure's words with a raised eyebrow. Smaller? What an insult. If there was one thing she wasn't, it was small. Compared to those weird giants of kids, she was rather average!

(In her mind, a vaguely scrambled image of a particularly tall girl forms, still as pretty as she was that day under the lights of the rehearsal room. Didn't make her any less freaky though... Spare some height, yeah?)

"...First year, mhm. Kinda sucks, but what am I gonna do about it? Magically age- Well, not magically, but-... You get it." Sandy taps at the bridge of her nose, annoyance weighing heavy on her shoulders at her less than intelligent use of words, "It's fine, I guess. Y'know, it's a lot better than where I live, but... Don't take this the wrong way, but everyone is just so odd here. Like, I had this one guy call me a mudblood? For jokingly talking to the ground when I fell? Who does that? Psychopaths? I just- Ugh! I keep thinking about it, and it keeps getting on my nerves. I'm done with it, done! I escape being bullied for two seconds and it's already back! He- He broke my glasses too! That d-dick."

Heaving a sigh, anger that had formerly dripped from her tone fading into the calm of the day, she frowns at herself. There was no reason to go on such a rant, especially to a stranger. She should apologize, make herself smaller for the rest of the conversation. No one needed a loudmouth.

"Sorry, again. I do that a lot."

"Pardon? Who did that to you?” Anella furrowed her brows, her green eyes narrowing in confusion and some sort of… well, not protectiveness, since they've only just met, but solidarity. There’s a hint of amusement in her tone though. Dick was a word she wouldn’t have expected somebody like Sandy to say, and she could tell that the word was foreign to Sandy's mouth as well. Maybe she said it to sound cool.

“That’s horrendous! Did you report him to the teachers about that?” Anella starts questioning, her voice rising in pitch with disbelief. She shuffled a bit in place, uselessly trying to get comfortable on the rocky shore. Her posture contrasts Sandy’s like the day contrasts the night - Sandy sits like she’s got a metal pole for a spine, and keeps it up even while angry or embarrassed, while Anella is almost folding herself in half just for the comfort of it. Maybe Sandy does it to seem more confident, like an intimidation tactic against all of these pureblood children running around. They respect very few people in general, and Sandy might be trying to make up for that. Or maybe her parents are just very strict on manners. Sometimes Anella’s musings take her too far, she searches too deep when the answers are simple and logical.

She sighs, looking at the water wistfully with a small eye roll. “That type of kids usually come from rich cretin families where they were taught that they’re the best,” The girl drawls out that sss. “the most important, that the world revolves around them…” She looks back at Sandy. “And then when somebody isn’t kissing their feet to apologise for breathing the same air as them, let alone jokes around them, they lose their marbles. I know the type.” Anella finishes, offering a sympathetic smile to Sandy. She shuffles again, noting how her butt is starting to hurt, but Sandy is quite an interesting girl. She’ll try to tough it out to keep talking to her.

She huffs as she tries to get comfortable, the rocks making it hard to do so. Stopping at some point, her attention is returned to Sandy. “Tell me who it is, Sandy, so I can go and knock some sense into him if he tries that again.” She offers with a smile, raising an eyebrow playfully. She wouldn’t really knock anything into him- she’s not quite the strongest, you see. But she can throw things pretty well! Very well in fact, which is why she was one of the top players in her team back at home. Second with the most goals, the goalgirls hated her. She could throw one of those brick-heavy books from the library at him.

Okay, her gluteus maximus is seriously starting to bother her now. “Wait-” She sighs, getting up with the same amount of grace that she sat down with. (Which is none.) She stretches her arms above her head, then dusts herself off. She looks down at Sandy, a bit impressed at how the cold stone isn’t making her as sore as Anella feels.

“I want to go inside, would you like to come with me?” She asks, before remembering that Sandy came here to probably be alone. “I understand if you want to sit here, I did kind of ambush you, but I’d like to hang out with you more.” Blunt much? Anella mentally criticizes herself, but maybe Sandy doesn’t mind her company. She atleasts hopes that that’s the case. “Maybe we could go to the transfiguration classroom, if the door is open. I don’t think there’s many people there at this time of day.“ She offers, reaching for Sandy. It’s Sandy’s turn to decide whether she would like to go with Anella, or not.

A raised eyebrow follows Anella's words. Even if she can't see the girl clearly, there's a lot to be desired in the slight twinge of amusement that coats the seemingly passionate words. Sandy had spent a lot of time fruitlessly analyzing tone, trying to navigate why people treated her weirdly. She was more than an expert in the mocking ways that girls would fake sincerity, and with a newcomer like this? There wasn't exactly much trust to be held.

Still, she allows her guard to calm just the slightest, hand moving from her nose to instead lightly hold onto the collar of her top, rubbing the fabric between her index and thumb. Something lingers in her stomach, a faint anxious remnant, but she stays quiet. There's enough kindness in the passed words, in the offer to beat her attacker, that Sandy can't help but swoon. It's sweet, gentle in such a foreign way with how deliberately violent her words are emphasized, and there's almost a lack of belief that this kindness had been targeted towards her. Really, there was so much love in this world that Sandy never quite got to see enough, and just this little conversation... It settled a lot, a blanket above the disgusting, rotting feeling that always held prominent on her shoulders.

"Sure are wise, hm?" There's nothing short of adoration that drips from her tone, a softness to her eyes, "You don't need to do all of that. I-I don't even really know his name, either way. Just remember what he said, that's... Enough, I guess. Didn't, uh, need to report him to the teachers, though. They found us before I found them. And... Found a pretty suitable detention for us too. I... I dunno, I guess it's reasonable. Whatever. I-"

Sandy is cut off by shuffling, the movement of someone getting up. It appears there's disappointment after disappointment, a rollercoaster of rising and falling emotions, because while she can't properly see the girl, she knows that the blurry figure is getting up to leave. A change in pace once more, something Sandy had to adjust to. She chooses to look away from the soon-to-depart figure, back at the lake, and doesn't pretend that she was better at acting than truth. Disappointment still held heavy on her, a pushing weight against her back. This interaction would never happen again, never line up as nicely, and Sandy had to be okay with that.

Wait.

Glancing back up at Anella, there's a hint of embarrassment that flares up at how quickly she jumped to a conclusion. The offer is there, out in the open, and she had just been completely debby-downering their entire interaction. It's self-absorbed, in an odd way, and Sandy hates the feeling of being wrong in such a stupid way. Sure, an important decision, but when it just comes to predicting? Ridiculous. Absolutely, terribly ridiculous.

"...I'd love to." Sandy's words are fumbled, far more concentrated on properly meeting where Anella's offer began and where her hand was intended to meet. It's a shaky grasp, but it's enough to heave herself up off the ground, glancing back at the lake for a moment before horrid vision meets the figure once more. She questions just how easy it is for some people to be straightforward with their thoughts, to be so unashamed by being themselves that they can offer up things just at the toss of a coin. Every passing second seems more and more lovely, a never-ending stream of negatives and positives ultimately overweighed by the unabashed kindness of this stranger. Sandy hadn't met enough people like this, hadn't grown quite used to the feeling of talking to someone like that, and yet she doesn't quite hate the small feeling in her stomach that feels lighter than before. There's warmth in the contact that she still hadn't dropped, and in every passing word that this girl says.

But maybe she's thinking too into it. She had always been one to idealize others, make them a holier figure than truth.
