Thinking that she had gotten an early lead, Costanza was surprised to find several people already behind her as she opened the middle door. She felt the hairs on her arms raise as a younger Hogwarts student spoke to her. Just nodding in response, she noticed some kid she had never seen before wave their wand to cast the Unlocking Charm, but they’d done so just as the honey badger pushed the thing open. Grumbling about wizards and their reliance on magic, Costanza stepped inside the new area and cleared the doorway, making room for those behind her to enter. She spied the Slytherin walking in behind her and raised her eyebrow.“Following me?” she asked with a sneer. She wouldn’t wait up for his response, walking over to the middle of… the half of the room? Costanza slipped between the row of items and craned her neck in an attempt to peek through the wire. No use. She’d probably have to get closer or use more than one of her brain cells for that. Instead, the honey badger’s zeroed in on the door. It was locked, so she finally decided to reach for her wand as a wizard would do before realizing that it wasn’t just an ordinary lock. The witch gave a snort, wondering how and when she fell into one of her father’s tabletop RPG games.
Costanza turned her attention to the main attraction of the room. A neat line of items were laid out before the middle door crew. She picked up the leg of the action figure, fiddling with it as she tried to understand the presence of the items. Then it hit her. These had to be the answers to the combination lock! If anyone was looking closely, they would see the honey badger’s gaze fill with excitement for the briefest moment before she remembered to collect herself and apply her figurative mask. Anyways, who would pay attention to a shadow?
She placed the leg back in its position and guessed that the spider stood for eight, the leg for one, the tricycle for three, the clock for eight, and lastly, the five rings for… five. Easy enough. The honey badger made her way over to the lock, jiggling it out of instinct. Hold on. There were only four toggles. Yet, she’d come up with five numbers. Turning back, Costanza wondered if the leg and spider were meant to count as one. But how far would that line of thinking go? Were the legs of the clown supposed to be counted with the wheels of the tricycle? What about its arms? Was the leg associated with something other than the spider? She looked to the girl who said she would have Costanza's back, debating on asking her for help.
Ugh. She was exhausting too much energy on this. The witch would just go with her gut. She inputted the numbers nine, three, eight, and five. If the combination worked, Costanza would open the door and step through, attempting to see what was on the other side without the hindrance of a wire wall. If the lock didn’t open, Costanza would step aside, allowing someone else to have a go.

Haunted Halls

Light flooded the room as Aly's spell succeeded, and the Ravenclaw breathed a sigh of relief. She was no Dee, after all, and some of her casting had gone... rather disastrously in the past. Now, at least, they could see more clearly - and similar spells around her succeeded, with Dee's mystery boy opening the leftmost door for them all and Lindsey nearby casting a rather impressive Four-Point Spell. Aly cocked an astonished eyebrow at the latter. Who knew the Hufflepuff had such talent? She made a mental note to not get on her bad side, just in case Lindsey was as good at throwing offensive spells as she was at navigating.
Stepping into the left room through the now-opened door, Aly first took a look at the man on Dee's arm before checking out her surroundings. Her best mate introduced the mysterious stranger as Madhup, the 'terror of Durmstrang Quidditch', and Aly let out an amused chuckle at the title. "A terror, eh? I suppose I should be glad I haven't gone up against you. What position do you play? I'm a Seeker, myself," she said, turning to properly examine the foreigner - and promptly recognising him on the spot. He'd cleaned up well since that morning, or at least hidden the giant letter D that had been painted on his bare chest last Aly had seen him. Her mouth dropped open in surprise as she remembered the scene from the broom race spectatorship stands just hours before, and she exclaimed, rather loudly and before she could truly think it through: "Wait - nogtail shit bloke? I remember you! Dee, this is your date?"
Once they’d gotten proper introductions out of the way, and once the disbelief had died down (and the realization that D stood for Dee and not Durmstrang… okay, now the tall teenager’s hatred for the Snakes that had thrown Dee off her broom that morning made much more sense), Aly turned her attention back to the room at hand. She could get to know her best mate’s new fling properly later; for now, there was a kid to rescue. Shining her light across the room allowed the Ravenclaw to read the script carved over the door, which she did loudly enough for the gaggle of younger students who had also passed through the door on the left into this oddly-tiled alphabet soup of a room to hear: “What warms your hide, but if it's a special one it makes you hide…”
Warms your hide… like a fire? Racking her brain for a five-letter word that meant fire, for clearly they’d have to step on one tile per row to reach the other side and move to the next room, Aly came up with ‘flame’ and searched the letters on the floor with her wand’s light beam. Yes, there was an F in the row closest to her… an L in the next… oh, but no A. There goes that idea.
“What else warms your hide?” she muttered as she continued to stare at the letters below her feet, enticingly waiting for a weight to press atop them to release Merlin only knows what kind of traps or punishments if incorrect, for another handful of heartbeats. She’d noticed the doors, too, but there was something about the lure of a puzzle in need of solving that would surely trap the attention of every Ravenclaw in the room. After all, five years of answering the common room’s evil eagle door knocker and its ridiculous questions had prepared her well for this moment. Riddles were definitely right up Aly’s, well, alley.
‘Robes’ as an idea fizzled out immediately, with no R in the first row on which to step. There was an R in the opposite row, and Aly circled the tiles for a moment, wondering if perhaps they were meant to approach this puzzle from the other side - but no, only an A in what had originally been the fourth row and was now the second. Now that Aly was examining vowels, she noted that there was only one in the third row, too - an O. She was no wordsmith, no linguist necessarily, but she knew enough basic five-letter words to know that a vowel often landed in the middle. And if the O was in the center, it was likely preceded by a consonant, since O very rarely fell at the end of vowel pairs. At least, that she could think of. That meant LO were probably the second and third letters, if it began from where she’d originally thought. If it was columns and not rows, they’d all be screwed.
Circling around back to the start, she continued to ponder. ‘Float’, ‘plops’, and ‘clogs’ all fell one row short, plus made no sense at all. The chill in the air made Aly grab instinctively for her cloak, which was not there - she’d left it in the common room of course since it clashed with her outfit - and that’s when it hit her, like a thunderbolt out of the blue. “Oh! Of course,” the sixth-year exclaimed, stepping one foot confidently first onto the C of the first row and then the other foot onto the L of the second. Now the latter half of the riddle made sense - Aly had seen one of those special disappearing ones the previous fall in the Forbidden Forest with her own two eyes. Owned by a fellow student, and one her age, no less. Aly continued onto the predicted O, and then A following it, before pausing for a second, teetering on the edge.
Nothing had seemingly happened so far, but if she was wrong, stepping on this last letter could flood the room with a deluge of traps. There were children in here. Was she willing to risk them like that?
Reminding herself that this puzzle had been organized by fellow students, and that therefore hopefully no one was actually supposed to get hurt here (pointedly ignoring the whole point of why they had rushed into this room, which was to find the girl that those same organisers had somehow kidnapped through the very floor itself and who had fallen screaming bloody murder into the abyss), Aly closed her eyes and pushed down on the K of the last row with the toe of her strappy right heel. Brace for impact…

The room was full of objects, cluttered well beyond a back Glasgow alleyway. She was looking for any trace of the girl, but the truth was that she wouldn't find that by just looking. She had to go inside. Behind her, she heard the scuffling of voices. There was a comment about first years alone, but Maisie didn't pay it much mind. She was an explorer after all! Still, it seemed wise to have some other students with her—just in case.
Inside the room, the clutter extended for as long as she could see. She walked around slowly, taking notice of the objects: paintings, statues, toys and all...bald or pink or both in some way. It was as she was walking that she saw it: the bright sparks and the sharp crackle. Turning her head sharply, she made it out clearly: a boy (@Zach Zaphire), older than her and familiar somehow, with a spell backfiring somewhat spectacularly. Maisie rushed over to him, asking, "Are you okay?" Not that she could do very much beyond a mending charm, but thought was there. And it was under the lights of his spell gone wrong that she could make out his face. "You're a prefect, aren't you?" she asked, now realizing she'd seen him around the common room.
Older years and a prefect, she was now very safe. Not to mention a few more students followed into the right room. So, she continued her tour of the room, until she got to the words written on the wall. "Bald, but not bald," she repeated rhetorically. Nothing was coming to mind at first; normally she preferred to understand the world through tactile means. "Do you think it's something in this room?" she asked the group while scanning the objects ahead of her.
She took a step back to observe the wall and the room better, unknowingly standing near the older years who'd first followed (@Alyssea Brown & @Ulysses Drake). As she pondered the riddle, she suggested, "Wait, what about the bald eagle?!" Pointing at the stuffed bald eagle, she looked up at them both to see what the consensus might be. If others agreed, Maisie would go and pick it up and place it under the wall.
Action: Submitting "Bald Eagle" as an answer to the riddle & will place the stuffed eagle under the wall if others agree.

She walked through the right door cautiously. She had left her wand in her common room because she didn't know any spells yet. There was a group of older students who had gone through this door. Upon coming into the room she saw a lot of weird objects. A stuffed seagull, a weird drawing of a bald man, a portrait of a bald man. A statue with a wig. She stared. This was one weird room.
Suddenly she heard a sharp crackle. She yelped and jumped back. She saw an older boy with his wand out (@Zach Zaphiere). Huh. That was a big fail. She watched as a fellow first year, another Ravenclaw she was pretty sure (@Maisie Gemmell), rushed over and asked if he was ok. She quietly followed "Umm.... that was pretty spectacular... what were you trying to do?"
She looked at the floor. And saw the words written on it. Bald but not bald... hmm... Unlike the other Ravenclaw she didn't immediately think of the items. Instead she thought about what the answer could be. She only knew of one meaning for bald. There were probably more but she figured it was most likely something that was called 'bald' but it wasn't bald. An.... eagle? Maybe it was represented by the seagull?
She looked up at the other girl's words. She looked where they were pointing and smiled at the eagle stuffie. She hadn't seen that earlier. "Yeah... that's right..... I think...." She awkwardly smiled at the fellow Ravenclaw and firstie. "Umm... I'm uhh.... Silva..."

| Alyssea broke into a smile and vaguely turned back into his direction. That made two of them who would probably get scared if something decided to jump at them. "Gotcha. No pressure." The room was certainly dark, as Ulysses eloquently put it. She squinted as if that would do anything to help her see better in the darkness. She hummed. "Yeah, let's go." Before she followed, she made sure her wand was still on her and ran through a quick list of various spells (healing, attack, and charms to name a few) in case of an emergency. If the maze didn't lighten up any more than this, then a Wand-Lighting Charm would be useful. She was wary of casting it now since, if chaos did go down, then they'd all be left in the dark as she cast an attack spell. Better to get used to the dark now than later. The offer to take Ulysses' hand had caught her off guard for a moment. They hadn't really talked about PDA or the extent to which 'date' applied to them. In the end, she took his hand and followed him to the right room. It would be easier to keep track of where they were if they stayed close, of course. Entering the right room had been a scene and a half as she watched a few familiar faces tumble through. When the purple sparks dissipated, she laughed at the unlucky caster. "Do you ever chill, Zach?" Alyssea looked around at the rest of the faces. If Zach was here, then— Sure enough, Raizel was there and Alyssea gave her a gentle wave. She turned back to the room and nudged Ulysses. "I wonder what's in the middle," she said before heading towards the mural. She read it out loud and hummed, looking over the items laying about. There was a clear reason as to why she hadn't been placed in Ravenclaw— Wait. Alyssea didn't exactly need the items lying about to make a guess, but seeing it gave her the confirmation she needed. "I think it's the bald eagle." She nodded at the First year she and Ulysses had followed into the room. "It's got 'bald' in its name but it's got feathers." |

❂ ⌜ Fall Ball: Haunted Halls ⌟ ❂
❂ October 19, 2024 ▎ --:-- ❂▪ ◚ ◚ ◚ ❂ ◚ ◚ ◚ ▪If one knows this Gryffindor so well, riddles and puzzles aren’t exactly her thing. While others find thrill in solving things, she doesn’t. Yes, she’s dressed as a detective and this should be her thing… right? Hahaha, wrong. While the room that they randomly picked didn’t exactly make her feel excited, there are other things that caught her eyes and one was Zach’s failed attempt at a spell. Purple sparks flew, not enough to hurt him luckily but enough to at least make her chuckle and grin. Nice attempt though she is wondering why he picked that certain spell. “Good try. That was entertaining at least.” she told him before turning towards Sere to see if she is still following them before looking around.
There’s the riddle on the mural and then there’s Alyssea waving at her. She’s surprised to see her of course but that didn’t stop her from waving and smiling as a greeting. Then her companion caught her attention. “Huh?” Raizel squinted her eyes, staring straight at the boy that her cousin is with, a hand on her chin. “Oh? Oh.” It took her a while to recognize who that boy was. The grin on her face grew wider, a sly look present on her brown eyes. “Ohohoho, now that’s interesting…” She uttered, more interested in those two rather than the riddle before them. She’ll let others take care of that. She’s more interested in Alyssea and this boy that she’s holding hands with.
Not like this boy is a complete stranger which is good or she would be more cautious of them hanging too close with her cousin. Too overprotective? Perhaps. But luckily, it was Ulysses, someone that she interacted with before, played in unofficial sports with before, the recent Quidditch match coming into mind. From what she could remember, he and Alyssea shared a broom during that time after the Hufflepuff saved him from falling to his doom. Anyway, she should bother Alyssea about this later on, about how she ended up being Uly’s date. She wants the tea. “Oi, Zach.” She started nudging the Ravenclaw boy, thinking that he might find this just as interesting as she did.▪ ▫ ◙ 364/200 ◙ ▫ ▪

It was definitely not a popular door that she had gone into. Everyone had chosen left, and here she was, choosing the right door along with a couple other people. Shrugging, she walked in and tried to use her sense of smell to perceive anything in the dark room that she had willingly walked into.
Confidently, she took a big sniff of the room, only to get caught up in dust. Her nose felt like it was filled with particles and immediately she took her left arm and started to rub her nose, hoping to get out whatever went in. She scrunched her nose a few times... even picked it only to rub it again. Luckily she was in the dark and no one could see her going to town making her nose feel better. When the dust stopped attacking her nose and she felt better, Colby was better able to see what was in front of her.
It was a rectangular room filled with so many objects. Perhaps they were the reason to the amount of dust that flooded the room. Colby slowly walked in, taking in the random objects that were placed around the room. There was nothing extravagant about them. A part of her wanted to touch and look into each object, but what if they were cursed? Perhaps watching movies like Indiana Jones with her Muggle-Born mother was getting to her a bit more than she would have liked.
Walking further, she saw that in the center floor of the rectangular room, there was a mural of some sort. There seemed to be wording on it, but it was hard to read. Colby blinked her eyes a few times, trying to get used to the darkness of the room. As she squinted, she read, "What is bald but not bald?" Colby could not help but to look confused. What did that mean? If something was bald, it was bald. How could they not be?
"Guys, we need to find something bald... but not bald," she said, not giving context at what she meant. If they wanted to figure out what she was talking about, they could go to the center of the floor and figure it out. Colby began to look around at the items. There were pictures and items that were completely random of each other. Instantly, she saw a band man in a picture and went up to it. They were holding a wand. But this guy is bald, she said, realizing that a part of the riddle was that they were also not bald.
Colby kept searching. There had to be something to help answer this riddle, or question, or whatever we wanted to call it. Alas, all she was able to find was another bald man at a salon, a stuffed toy dragon, and a bright pink wig. All were either bald, had hair or did not even have hair to begin with. Crossing her arms, she started to slowly scan the room again. "Did anyone find anything?" she asked, trying to be somewhat of a team player. She could do this on her own, but what would be the fun in that? Might as well use the others for their skills to win.
Instantly, Colby's eyes glanced over feathery wings and they weren't a part of the toy dragon. She moved to get a closer look and saw that the wings belonged to a stuffed bald eagle. Colby stared at the object for what seemed like a couple minutes. The eagle looked so real and confident. Her head tilted to the side to look better at its head. There were still feathers up at the top. Why is it even called a bald eagle? she asked herself, wondering about who names these animals without common sense.
It then hit her. The riddle, "bald... but not bald" was exactly this. It was called the bald eagle, but it was obviously not bald as it had feathers (although thin) at the top of its head. "I think I found it!" she called out to the couple others in the room. Colby reached for the bald eagle, unbeknownst of what may happen.

Linda was looking at Quentin when sudden events made her look away. She didn't mind him grabbing her hand and moving with him through the middle door. She would keep holding his hand while looking around, trying to understand what was happening in the room they were now in.
Let's stay close and be careful. We don't know what to expect here. She said looking at Quentin again.
It was a strange choice of activity but maybe it was somehow supposed to help students from other schools to distract from the tragedy? If so, she wasn't sure it was a great idea. Still wondering how he felt, Linda decided to not repeat her question. Let's just spend this time together. In the end, we can decide what to do after it. You can keep holding my hand if you don't mind me holding yours.
She smiled in reassuring way. Whatever happened between them earlier could wait to be discussed. They had to focus on the rooms and doors. Linda looked around, trying to notice as much as possible. Do you see anything that could help us in this room? She asked Quentin, glancing at him again.
She heard someone casting spells and saw others just looking around. Some students attracted her attention and she looked their in time to notice some objects. It should definitely be helpful for this riddle. Spider and leg, she'd probably count it as 9. Clown on tricycle would maybe mean 4? Clock on eight would represent 8 and five rings would stand to 5. But she didn't notice anything for it to put so she still didn't have any ideas for this.

Poppy felt her mind instantly start racing as she entered the room. She had to find this out. She had to find that other student. She had to prove herself a true ravenclaw, surely she was put in the nerd house for a reason. Surely she was truely smart enough for these kinds of things. She just had to use all that birdy brainpower like this was a major test.
She noticed how perfect everything was and said out to the group. “Don’t touch anything, the placement is important to the puzzle.” She felt rude for stating the obvious, but someone did decide to kick the wall and then got sealed up, so it was much better safe than sorry in this place.
She noticed the older student walked up to a lock box. How come she didn’t notice that? “If it doesn’t work, yell out your answer so we can keep track of everything we’ve tried, please.” She instructed, the worst feeling would be trying a combination just to realize not only did it not work, but the group should’ve known it didn’t work, so it was a waste to time to try it anyways.
She saw the sour slots on the lock box, so that meant four numbers. Spider, 8 legs, plus 1 extra leg disturbingly placed on there: 9. Clown on a tricycle, well there were 3 wheels, but the clown had 2 legs. If they continued on with the base logic. It only made sense to count that as a 5 in total. The clock was 8, and the rings were 5.
Alright she was ready with a back up code.

Yasha frowned as his second round of revelio puttered away on his wand. Oh well. The others' spells seemed to work well enough to avoid any traps or continued goo on the ground in the next room. It was a bare enough space that the revelio he used probably wouldn't have revealed much more than the last one had anyway. Smile faces and building marks.
Looking around at the others who had entered, Yasha was looking at a team of - the pair who had first approached the door, himself and Kaya, and two older girls, both with long brown hair, making them six of however many had first come into the "decrepit" house. They all seemed to enter the room with a great deal of caution and spell-casting, so Yasha was feeling pretty confident in his choice of the leftmost door.
Once he had scrutinized his "teammates", he looked around the room. It really was as bare as could be with only the torches that lit the room (plus the wonderful wand work of one of said brown-haired girls), the riddle, and five rows of letters.
Yasha was willing to bet that the right combination of letters would allow the way through to swing open. With this thought in mind, he crossed his arms over his waist and pondered the question on the wall and the letters for a decent amount of time before it clicked. ~Cloak.~ It seemed the only right answer to him, considering invisibility cloaks. It would have been nice if there were any sign of some rocks or something heavy-ish that he could place on the letters instead of physically tripping them himself. Oh well.
"I am pretty sure the answer is cloak." He said to Kaya and the room at large, but before he could move himself, one of the brown-haired girls seemed to have been thinking just a little bit faster than he and was already stamping out the letters. Here we go.
He braced himself to see if he and the older girl were right in the solution to the riddle. Instinctively stepping closer to Kaya and prepared to cast Immobulus if anything were to fly towards them because of a wrong answer.
