Koko would remember 2023 as the year she finally found her place in pure-blood politics. At the few dinners her family had held so far, she had gracefully slipped into the role of the helpful, calm, smiling, perfect future heir to the Leblanc family. She had learned the importance of organising dinners and deciding which hors d'oeuvres went with which meals.

Very few of the pure-blood families that Leblanc Estates entertained had children near Koko's age. Usually, the children were too young to go to Beauxbatons or Hogwarts, so even Koko's brothers, who were both third years at Hogwarts, were too old to comfortably interact with them.

At the gathering tonight, only a few families were expected to attend. Of course, the Leblancs would be there. Hosting the event guaranteed that even the children would converse with the guests. If asked, Koko, Charles and Holmes would attest that they were pure-blooded, but this was a lie for all three of them. Koko was one-eighth Veela, and both Charles and Holmes were half-bloods.

Koko was a bit worried for Charles ─ or anyone who tried to talk to him ─ tonight. The fourteen-year-old Gryffindor had slicked his red hair back, and he wore a pair of sunglasses that matched a black leather jacket. If he went outside, Koko thought he might die from the sunlight. He had been a bit standoffish recently, too. When Koko practised Quidditch with him, he was always a sore loser and a bit aggressive about everything. Their grand-père Alphonse had already had a talk with him about the importance of politeness in the face of their guests.

Holmes would be fine tonight. The Hufflepuff was friendly to everyone, and although he defaulted to politeness, he was still amiable even in the tensest of circumstances. Tonight, in lieu of his favourite hoodies, he wore a short-sleeved white button-up top paired with black slacks. His black hair was parted in the middle and framed his face in feathery layers.

Koko fully intended to play the part of Refined Pure-Blood Favourite Daughter tonight. What with her Quidditch captaincy and her longstanding conversationality in French, her grandfather was beginning to prefer her to her siblings, even if it was just by a bit. Thus, Koko wore a respectable ensemble for the night. Her hair was down, out of its usual ponytail, and it was pushed out of her face with a white headband. Her usual golden hoop earrings were replaced by pearl studs. She wore subtle white heels that only added an inch to her already lacking height.

The 'dinner' would be held later in the evening, as the Leblancs wanted time to socialise first. As such, chairs were set up in multiple spots throughout the estates' extensive gardens. At each spot, the chairs were set up in a circle, and in the middle of the circle was a table upon which rested various appetisers. House-elves would roam the gardens throughout the evening, so if anyone needed anything, all they had to do was ask.

Guests began to enter, and mostly, they were greeted by Alphonse or Rosalie, the elder of the two Leblanc sisters. Vienna, the younger, met with a few guests, and she talked animatedly about some singer Koko didn't recognise with Jacques Vasseur, a young noble from Mont-de-Marsan. There were a few British families in attendance as well ─ a few people from one branch of the Davies family, a few Travers and also some of the Villas. Koko didn't know any of them too well, but she was ready to get to know each of them once they arrived ─ especially if there was a child who wasn't four.

leblanc info below:
Reducio
Reputation: Although wealthy, the Leblancs of southern France are not known for much. They have acquired their money largely by being in the right place at the right time and making the right partnerships. Very rarely have there been famous Leblancs, and those who were famous usually acquired such fame from litigation skills.

Alfonse: The head of the family, he is a stern-looking old man with pale skin, blue eyes and white hair. He is generally old-fashioned but not in an obtuse way. He is polite and will offer children chocolates if he sees them, but if anyone misbehaves, he will not hesitate to call them out on it. He prefers to speak French, but he can speak English decently enough.

Rosalie: The current heir to the family & Koko's mum. She is tall and blonde with blue eyes and is wearing a white dress with a cream blazer. She is very polite but has a bit of RBF - she is working on it, so if she gets the sense that she is intimidating you, to try to make up for it, she will be overly nice. Suffice to say, she is a bit awkward, especially for a pure-blood heir. She is bilingual in French and English

Vienna: Rosalie's sister, Alphonse's daughter, Koko's aunt. She looks very similar to Rosalie but is a lot more bubbly. She knows a lot of wizarding pop culture (she is quite a bit younger than her sister) and will not hesitate to make you feel at home. Her French is a lot better than her English, but she is conversational in English.

Charles/Charlie: He is 14 and is a third-year in Gryffindor at Hogwarts. He is Rosalie's child and Koko's adoptive brother He is 5'4, has red hair and light skin, but he has dark eyes with a shape that suggests Chinese descent. He is wearing all-black, including sunglasses and a leather jacket. He is quite rude and brash, and he prefers speaking English over French. His French is not great.

Holmes: Also 14, Holmes is Charlie's twin and is in Hufflepuff. He is Koko's adoptive brother. He is 5'3 and is wearing a white button-up shirt and black slacks. He looks a lot more like his father, whose parents were Chinese. He is very polite and a bit shy, but will be very nice and fun if talked to. He likes jokes.
feel free to godmod any of the leblancs!

To Ara's dismay, her parents thought it would be nice to go to France of all places to have dinner with a few pure-blood families and a family called Leblanc was hosting it. The name "Leblanc" wasn't as familiar to the young Slytherin as some others were. But she was familiar with France though she'd visited Paris when she was a young child and all she remembered about the place was that it smelled like piss.

Ara let out a sigh of relief when she found out their destination wasn't Paris, instead, it was a place called Rioux-Martin.

The only people from the Villa family who were forced to come came was the 5 children. Apparently, their parents were busy and left Peter, the eldest, in charge.

At least it was a rather short trip though. They'd be staying at a regular muggle hotel after dinner. Ara didn't hate the fact they were staying at a muggle place, it was just the fact that they had to ride a muggle transportation service! It was absurd! In her parents' eyes, it was a way to familiarize their children with muggle technology to the displeasure of the 5 Villa siblings. The 'flight' as the muggles called it wasn't THAT bad, the almost 2 hours of straight up discomfort though was excruciating for Ara. Edmund out of all her siblings was sitting next to her. The fact that made it even more outrageous was that he had to get the seat near the window while she was at the middle and Hallie was at the aisle. Throughout the ride, Edmund had found dozens of ways to annoy Ara, his favourite of the bunch was to make random noises which slowly drove his sister insane.

They arrived about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, giving them a few hours to dress up in their formal attire. They arrived at the muggle hotel at about 4:30 and all of them have changed an hour before dinner. Somehow, they have arrived at the Leblanc's Estates or that's what her parents called it. 'Not bad.' Ara thought, looking at the structure of the large building/buildings that make up the place that the Leblancs call home. She was still a bit 'jetlagged' as the muggles called it and tired of not just Edmund specifically this time.

Peter, being the oldest was the first to walk in, followed by Catherine, Edmund, Hallie, and last was Ara. The girl had her usual pissed look on her face. They were greeted by an unknown blonde, blue-eyed, bubbly girl. The 5 siblings somehow found their seats and upon sitting, Ara zoned out, she just wanted this to get over with.

When the Villa family arrived, Rosalie and Alphonse were busy greeting members of the Davies and Travers families. That left Vienna Leblanc to show the five siblings and their parents to their seats. She would try to make conversation with them, smiling and talking as she travelled deftly through the gardens. She guided the family to one set of chairs where a group of adults were meant to sit ─ the oldest of the children would be invited to sit there, but if they (Peter and Catherine) wished to sit with their siblings, that would also be accommodated.

'I am so glad you are here!' she exclaimed in heavily-accented English. 'Please do make yourselves at home. On this table ─' She gestured to the table in the centre of a different group of chairs, meant for the younger Villas. '─ we have cheese, fruit and homemade breads. There is sparkling cider ─' She pointed to a different table not too far away. '─ and wine and water over here.' She gestured to yet another auxiliary table, this one decorated with glasses of water and red and white wine. 'If you would prefer to have something else, please do not hesitate to let any of us or any of our house-elves know.'

She would gesture for the Villas to seat themselves at either the chair group for the older people or the one for the children, and while they were doing that (if they chose to do so), she would wave at Koko, Charlie and Holmes, who were standing largely out of the way. 'Mes chéris ! Venez ici !'

Charlie lazily lifted his head and adjusted his sunglasses before glancing at Koko and Holmes, who shrugged at each other and began to wander over to where Vienna and the Villas were. Koko was only mildly annoyed to find that she was the second-shortest of the group.

'Hello,' Koko said. She would extend her hand for a handshake if the others wished, but for now, she kept her hands folded in front of her. 'I'm Koko. I'm going to be a sixth year at Hogwarts, and I am a Slytherin.' She was quiet about her surname, especially considering that her biological father had not been a pure-blood, and she ignored Charlie's fake-vomiting gesture that he had made at the mention of her house.

Holmes introduced himself as simply 'Holmes'. He did not even offer that he would be in his third year this year. Charlie said nothing, only crossing his arms over his chest and continuing to glower.

'As you are all teenagers, or almost teenagers,' Vienna shot a smile at the youngest Villas, 'I thought it was prudent for you to meet one another. Perhaps you'll make friends!'

With that, Koko watched forlornly as her favourite and only aunt sauntered away to greet more people, leaving her with her brothers (ew) and people she didn't know.

Charlie would glance at the boy who seemed to be in his year (Edmund) and step closer without saying anything. He propped his sunglasses on the top of his head and slipped his hands into his pockets.

Koko picked up a glass of sparkling cider before sitting down down in one of the empty chairs. 'You're from the Villa family, right? In England? How was your trip?' By now, they likely had realised that they had found a fellow countrywoman in Koko, what with her received pronunciation accent and preference of English over French.

The two eldest Villa siblings, Peter and Catherine sat at the adult's table although they could've seated at a separate table where Ara, Edmund, and Hallie were. 'How dare they leave me with this hunk of junk?' Ara scoffed, referring to Edmund as the hunk of junk. As they arrived at the table, Hallie immediately grabbed a piece of bread to eat and seated in one of the many empty chairs. It was obvious she hasn't eaten much the whole day. A girl named Koko extended her hand to them as she introduced herself. Ara was the one who shook it although it was supposed to be Edmund for he was the oldest of the 3 youngest ones.

Ara looked at her clothes first, like the fashionista inside of her wanted. 'Nice outfit... Wonder where she buys these kinds of clothes. What's the fabric called?' The girl switched to her formal tone, "Pleasure meeting you Koko. I'm Ara Villa, an upcoming second year also from Slytherin." She gave a look at a boy (who looked about Edmund's age) who was making a vomiting expression at Koko's mention of their house. "This is Edmund, an upcoming fourth year that is from Slytherin as well and-" she was cut off by Hallie who wanted to introduce herself on her own. "I'm Hallie!" The young girl gave her signature sweet smile "I'll be a first year in a couple months!"

Ara didn't mind the sudden interruption, it was just Hallie wanting to be more independent. Another guy named Holmes gave a rather lazy introduction as the boy who "vomited" didn't speak.

"-Perhaps you'll make friends!" The woman who led them to their table said. The young Slytherin nodded but not in agreement. It was more of a subconscious thing where it shows that she was listening. She wasn't planning to make friends at all unlike Hallie and maybe Edmund. The poor girl just wanted to leave as soon as the whole enchilada was over.

The "vomit" guy stepped closer to Edmund as he practically mirrored Edmund's stance. The two boys looked at each other as if having a conversation with just staring, Ara scoffed at this. 'Looks like the hunk of junk found someone just like him' she thought.

The older girl, Koko, sat down while holding a glass of cider spoke. She asked about their trip. "It was rather... different than our previous ways of transport to similar events." Ara answered as she sat down beside Hallie. The girl also tugged at Edmund's suit jacket, signalling him to sit down as well instead of having a weird staring contest with another boy his age. Edmund finally spoke as he sat, "We took a muggle transportation invention called a- uhm- air something" "Airplane." Ara corrected. "Yes, airplane... I knew that!" Ara rolled her eyes. "As I was saying, we took an airplane for about 2 hours." he continued.

"While you annoyed me to death." The younger Slytherin mumbled as she side-eyed her other siblings who sat at another table.

Koko gazed forlornly at the two older Villas, who left for the adult table. She was counting down the days until she herself turned seventeen, although it was partly in excited anticipation while also in slight worry. She wasn't quite sure she wanted to be an adult.

The blonde adjusted her sleeves after shaking hands, nodding after each introduction. Her smile widened at Hallie's words, and a small chuckle escaped her mouth. 'Well, it's positively lovely to meet some fellow Slytherins. I'm surprised I've not seen you two around that much.' Glancing at Hallie, she added, 'I'm sure you'll love Hogwarts.'

Koko took a sip of her sparkling cider while gazing warily at Edmund and Charlie. Both boys were nearly the same height, and they held themselves in the same demeanour ─ if their actions were any similar, everyone else was definitely in for an interesting night. Koko wasn't sure what Charlie would do if met with someone as rude as himself, but she didn't wish to find out.

Holmes stood off to the side before daintily seating himself. Charlie followed suit, but not before sneering. Koko would talk to him later, she told herself, but for now she just shot him a small glare before returning her once-again-kind gaze to the Villas. Charles's disciplinary talk could wait.

Ara mentioned her family's mode of transport being different compared to usual, and Koko quirked an eyebrow, surprised. Had they perhaps taken one of those ships the international schools often took to Hogwarts? The boy elaborated, however, and noted that they had taken an... airplane. The word was vaguely familiar, which Koko owed to her Muggle-born adoptive father, Victor, who was, of course, absent from this event. He and Rosalie had divorced years ago, and although Koko usually lived with him for at least part of the year, she had recently been spending more and more time with the Leblancs.

Still, she wondered why the Villas were using an airplane. It seemed awfully obtrusive. 'That's interesting,' she said finally. 'Why an... air... plane? and not the Floo? I feel like that would have lessened some of the annoyance.' Koko chuckled at her own wry statement ─ she had meant well. She stumbled over the word 'airplane' despite having known what it meant; it was simply a word she didn't use often.

'Either way,' Koko continued, 'I'm glad you got here safely.'

'Me too,' Holmes agreed. 'It's very nice to have children around my age here.' He did not elaborate.

Koko wouldn't speak for a moment. She had never been inherently good with social interaction, especially pure-blood interactions that followed many rules, so she had to gather her thoughts before she formulated a question. 'Well, as you're all at Hogwarts, or going to be at Hogwarts, how are you finding it? Especially you ─' Koko glanced at Ara in particular. '─ since you're in Slytherin. I'm curious to see what you think of our house.'

Ara glanced at her elder sister, Catherine, who was at the other table. She was sitting beside Peter as they mingled with other guests. Catherine caught her glance and nodded. The girl huffed, 'At least I'm not expected to do that much' she thought. The young Slytherin knew that the two oldest Villas were given the task to make new acquaintances because they might become useful in the future when they'll be running the family. While the youngest three were just given the suggestion of doing so, their parents weren't certain that there would be many children there.

The ravenette then glanced at Edmund and the "vomit" guy. 'They are really similar aren't they?'.

Koko then asked why didn't they just use the floo network and Ara eyed Edmund to answer it since she was doing the dreaded task of talking for the 3 of them. Edmund scoffed and messed up her hair before leaning more towards the table. Ara slapped his hand away as she fixed her hair and he started speaking. "Our parents wanted us to be familiar with muggle transport as 'the world is evolving', their words not ours. It was the time we used a kind of muggle transport that wasn't a train or a car." Edmund explained quite sassily and Hallie nodded.

Ara then noticed that everyone was seated already, Edmund was in front of the "vomit" guy as Holmes was seated in front of Hallie.

The guy named Holmes finally spoke something more than just a word, saying that it was nice to have children his age present. Ara nodded in agreement as Edmund shrugged. Koko then directed a question towards Ara. "I haven't really talked with people at our house besides maybe my roommate. I'm not that social." she continued, "I mainly avoided people during my first year.". Her voice was quite monotone, like her voice when she first came to Hogwarts. Ara has been told to not speak so blankly but she was used to being monotone and having a stone-cold face during gatherings like now, she did it mainly out of habit.

To continue the conversation, like she's supposed to, she asked a question back. "How about you? Since I guess you've been in Hogwarts for a long time, you might have seen or experienced more things than me and Edmund who's also in Slytherin.".

Koko smirked slightly when Edmund messed up his sister's hair. It was just the type of thing she would have done to Charlie if she were a meaner older sibling. As things were, though, Koko was dreadfully nice, and she could only experience that sort of humour from afar.

She listened to Edmund's explanation, nodding slowly, still not quite understanding. If she had taken even a Muggle train to France, she could imagine that she would have gotten at least a reprimand from her French pure-blooded family, although Rosalie herself didn't care too much, having been married to a Muggle-born.

Well, wizards had trains, too. Maybe they had wizarding airplanes in Australia or something. Koko wasn't too well-versed in the new happenings in the world.

Holmes, meanwhile, was attempting small talk with Hallie. Koko couldn't quite hear him, seeing as he, like her, often tended to speak softly, especially when not directing his words to more than one person. She was not sure how things were going, but as he was actively talking, she supposed nothing was bad.

There was a small silence as Koko tried to think of something to say, but Charlie punctuated it with a small musing that was mostly directed at Edmund. 'If it were me, I would try to see if my grand-père would let me use one of his brooms. I think I could make it across the Channel on my own...' His voice was gruffer than both Koko's and Holmes's were. Almost begrudgingly, he added, 'The name's Charlie.'

Hoping to allow Charles some time to talk to the boy of similar temperament, Koko fixed her amber gaze on the dark-haired girl in front of her. Ara had noted that she was not very social – something to which Koko had largely been able to relate, especially in her fourth year. 'That's... rather understandable,' Koko noted. Her reasons for lacking sociability were likely far different than Ara's. 'At least you made it through your first year,' the older Slytherin joked.

Her smile faded slightly when Ara noted that she had likely seen and experienced a lot of things. 'Well, yes, that's true.' How was she meant to elaborate? Her pale hands clasped in her lap, and she glanced away, trying to formulate a response that wasn't simply the obvious. 'Let's just say that I am glad my first few years at Hogwarts are over. I have no desire to relive them. Things were not as safe as they are today.' Her voice was noticeably flatter when she spoke those few sentences. 'I am not the most social, either. Although I used to be. I suppose Hogwarts has changed, and I've changed with it.'

If Ara wanted more detail, she could certainly ask. Koko shifted slightly in her seat, picking up and finishing off her glass of sparkling cider before setting it aside. She was not inclined to elaborate on some of the more tragic events that had affected Slytherin – and Hogwarts in general, of course – without prompting. However, if Ara asked, she would do her best to do the truth justice.

But if Ara wanted to keep the talk surface-level and easy, Koko would be glad for that.

The girl raised a brow at Charlie's comment and introduction while Edmund had other ideas. "I proposed that to my parents but apparently it was too dangerous for the leading heirs of the Villas to fly that far of a distance." the older Villa scoffed. Ara shrugged. She was there when her brother proposed this alternative plan instead of the flight yet their parents rejected it.

Of course, their safety was important but what was life without a little risk? Catherine also sided with their parents for the reason that they were too valuable to the family to die by falling off a broom.

The two boys, Edmund and Charlie were about to start a rather passive-aggressive exchange.

Meanwhile, Hallie was busy having a conversation with... Holmes was it? Ara saw Hallie being her usual bubbly self as Holmes spoke softly. She smiled a bit at the duo before she turned her attention back to Koko. The older girl joked about Ara surviving her first year.

"Well, you can't continue if you can't handle only the first year can you?" Koko stated that she was glad her first couple of years were over. Things were not as they used to be. Apparently, safety was also a factor. She took note that Koko's smile dropped as well. Ara nodded. "Were the rules more ... loose back then?" she asked. " Or ... did something else happen?"

"I suppose that the fact that there's change is the only thing permanent in the world. Especially with all the magical aspects of it" the younger girl stated. She sipped more of her drink as she stepped on Edmund's foot to signal him to get his posture right. She then put on a fake smile when she faced him. "Do you want Cathy to tie you to a chair again to practice table manners?" She whispered.

These two always bickered and were the common example of a realistic sibling relationship. However, when someone or something gets in their way, they'll of course help each other, only because it was a threat to both of them and it was mainly personal gain. Not without the usual insult, however.

Charlie's expression remained mischievous, almost over-confident despite Edmund's response. 'Well, there's always next year,' he said snottily, smirking.

Koko elected to ignore him. As difficult as it was to tune out his grating voice, it was a talent she had worked for years to foster. Koko knew better than most that hard work often did result in improved performance. This was no exception. She kept her expression calm and polite, making no effort to break her focus on Ara.

Koko laughed quietly at Ara's quip. 'I suppose you could...' she murmured in response.

Her smile returned almost as quickly as it had left, but Koko was by no means a closed book when it came to her emotions. 'I wouldn't say the rules were more loose. Rather, there just might have been a bit more waiting for us when we did break the rules. Let's just say the rules are in place for a reason, however silly they may be.' Her smile widened slightly, and she shifted in her seat, crossing one leg over the other. 'Personally, I'd love to fly a broom outside of class or Quidditch. Maybe one day!'

Ara certainly seemed wise beyond her years when she noted that, perhaps, change was one of the more consistent things in the world. At the younger girl's age, Koko wouldn't have been able to fathom such a notion. 'You're right.' The words were quiet, noncommittal, an unbothered admission of a now-acknowledged truth. She didn't have anything profound to say in response – Koko was no philosopher. She was not one to contemplate things so deeply; things simply were what they were, and that was that.

Koko glanced, perhaps forlornly, at where the adults had been speaking for quite some time now. The Leblanc family's events never went on long – something, Alphonse often said, about him being old and requiring sleep, kept them from going until the wee hours of the morning. Nonetheless, this interaction with other wizarding children her age, or close enough to it, was something Koko thought she might appreciate more of. After all, soon enough, she'd be at the adult table.

She had zoned out when Ara spoke to Edmund. She generally preferred not to pay much attention to her brothers at events like this – tough love was her philosophy; they would learn how to act on their own. 'Well, it has been truly lovely getting to talk to you,' she said genuinely, re-focusing on Ara. 'I suppose my only regret is that it's going to be such a short time. It's rare that students from Hogwarts other than me and my brothers roam these grounds.'
