The Wrong Owl
Time: Breakfast before classes
Date: 19 September
Avis reached across the table for another blueberry muffin. She really couldn't get enough of them. It was almost magical how good they were. She snorted at her own joke and took a large bite, the purple juices of the blueberries staining the corners of her mouth.
Usually, Avis would have been on her way to the History of Magic by now for her first class of the day, but seeing as her class was close and the Ravenclaw was expecting something special in the mail this morning, she’d decided to wait for the breakfast mail drop rather than wait to fetch it from the Owlery later. She drummed her fingers impatiently on the table top, still working on the muffin. She'd have to leave in a few minutes if the owl didn't show up soon but the nervous anticipation kept her seated.
Finally, a shriek from above alerted the students waiting below that the mail had arrived and Avis shot up from her seat on the bench, narrowly dodging a stream of white owl excrement from the heavens. The boy next to her groaned as it landed with a nasty splat on his blue and black robes but Avis had no time to console him. A small barn owl was gliding in her direction and at the last moment, it dropped a white envelope with something scrawled on the back in neat cursive. The girl didn't waste any time and tore at the thick paper, pulling out a folded piece of parchment. She took a deep breath, suddenly nervous now that the letter had finally arrived. Could this be the answer to her and her family's years of questions? Her mind was racing. She'd have to find both of her siblings right away and she might have to miss class to share the news... if it was good... or bad, she supposed. Avis shook her head, trying to clear it, and slowly unfolded the piece of parchment in her shaking hands.
Avis frowned. This was certainly not what she had been expecting. She turned the parchment around as if she had missed something but there was nothing else. She flipped the envelope over and read the name on the back. "Alejandro Garcia". Avis sighed. How had the owls gotten her mixed up with a random boy? What was she supposed to do now?September 17, 2024
Hello Alejandro!
I hope you made the team, you sound so talented! I have been interested in dueling, because who doesn’t love a little bit of a fight? It also just seems so cool. Being able to truly use the spells we learn in class consistently? That’s also good for academics, right? I did sign up for broom racing too, because although being on a broom is scary, in quidditch there are flying balls trying to hit you! At least in broom racing it’s just other racers. Did you take an interest in another sport before quidditch, or has it always been quidditch for you?
Alyss Gilmour
Disappointed, Avis pocketed the letter and the envelope and trudged out of the Great Hall. She would have to figure it out in class.

I sipped my porridge half-asleep. The flutter of owls woke me up quite a bit. It always did. Surprisingly a owl swooped down and dropped a letter on my plate. Must be from my Quill Pal. We had been talking for a bit now. It's quite interesting sending letters to a stranger. You don't get to judge them by their appearance. I ripped it open only to find a paper different to one I usually got from Alyss. Weird.Whose letter is this? My name is certainly not Avis, Will or Prim. I looked up to search for the owl that dropped me the wrong letter but there were dozens of owls in the Great Hall. They all looked exactly the same as each other. I tried look for a person looked either like Will Prim or Avis but there were hundreds of students in the great hall. It was like looking for needles in a haystack.Dear Will, Prim and Avis,
Had a Ministry worker visit the house last week as I stated in the previous letter. He came again yesterday as you know and filled me in a bit on Da's situation. I cannot discuss all the details over owl but he's been sighted in New Zealand. They are unsure if it was him for certain but I implore you all to proceed with cautious hope. Continue to work hard on your studies and stay focused in school. Don't let any good or bad news of Da detour you. I love you all so dearly.
Mam
I quickly scoffed down my porridge and went out into the corridors. Hoping to maybe just find three random students that just happen to be the recipients of the letter I was clutching in my hand. But there was no one like that. Students, professors went about there daily business. I'll send an owl to either Avis, Prim or Will. For now though time for class.WC: 324/200 Tags:@Avis Greymond

Avis sat barely listening to the constant drone of her professor, tapping her pointer finger nervously against the wood of her desk. A Slytherin girl next to here shot Avis an annoyed look and she glared back, having neither the time nor patience to apologize. The girl huffed and turned in her seat and Avis went back to tapping.
She was wracking her brains trying to think of an Alejandro Garcia announced during the Sorting Hat ceremony but she could barely remember her own experience. Besides, maybe he wasn’t even in her class? How was she supposed to find a person she’d never seen, more or less heard of. The best solution she could think of was to simply mail the letter to this Garcia person but how would she be sure of getting her own? Obviously there had been some sort switch up. Mam had said it would arrive today. She groaned internally and switched from tapping her finger to tapping her foot anxiously against the floor. The Slytherin girl gave her a scalding side eye and Avis stuck out her tongue in response. The girl’s pale cheeks heated and she turned around with her hand up. Avis rolled her eyes. Tattletale.
. . .
After a sound lecture, Avis left class in a rush. She desperately needed to get to the Owlery before Flying started. Avis supposed she could sneak in a bit late if the lesson was going to be on beginning safety procedures again. She’d already mastered those and could afford to miss the first part of the lesson and because she hadn’t had much time to think about what to do with the letter in her precious thanks to Miss Tattletale, Avis had resigned herself to laying in wait for whoever had received her letter, hoping this person would’ve thought to simply mail it back to Mam as she’d been careful not to put her children’s full names on the envelope. It was sensitive business, Da’s case. Mam had made sure to be very vague in most cases.
Minutes later, Avis found herself panting up the last few steps to the West Tower, the September breeze cooling her heated face as she reached the top. Bursting through the door, she jumped as a few startled owls gave her some sharp annoyed screeches but besides them, the Ravenclaw found herself alone amongst the birds and their white streaks of waste. She wrinkled her nose at the mess but found a clear spot to settle down, turning her attention towards the door and willing the recipient of her letter to walk through.

As I sat in class, I paid no attention to the professor lecturing about wrist movement, instead I wondered who my letter was with. Was there even supposed to be a letter for me? I've heard that the owls here aren't prone to mistakes. Amidst my thoughts the professor asked me a question about some weird words. I stayed silent staring back at him dumbly. Bet the class got a good chuckle out of that. Bloody fuckin lovely.
I left the class in a hurry and scrambled up the moving staircases, not an easy feat, up to the owlery. I quickly scribbled down a message.I wrote. Huh, I didn't know their last names. Hopefully the school owl can can find them. There's no one else named these name are there?Dear Avis, Will and PrimI skimmed over it again to check for any errors and sealed the envelope. I handed it to an owl to hopefully find the individuals named Avis, Will and Prim. I turned around speed-walked to class.I think a letter was misdelivered to me. I am writing here to tell you that perhaps we can meet in the small hall before class to give you guys the letter. I hope this mishap has not caused any inconvenience.

The Wrong Owl
Avis woke with a start to the fluttering of wings. Great Merlin, how long had she been asleep? She sat up, blinking her bleary eyes until they focused on a tiny owl perched on the tip of her shoe. Avis furrowed her eyebrows and was about to shoo it away when she realized what the owl had clutched in its miniature beak.
Slowly reaching out, Avis plucked the envelope from the owl’s grasp and gave it a solemn nod as it hopped away to roost with the others.
Hoping this was hers, she ripped open the parchment and pulled out a short note, only to be disappointed once again… until she read the note.
Alejandro Garcia! She’d found him at long last… or rather he’d found her. Avis picked herself off the floor of the owlery and hastily dusted herself off. She tucked the letter in her pocket and dashed out of the tower, hoping she wasn’t too late and knowing full well she was skipping Flying. No matter. This was more important to her by far.
Flying down the stairs, Avis made her way to the small hall, pushing pasts students and professors alike and mumbling rushed apologies as she went. She had to get that letter and find out what happened to Da.
