Ready for a Day Trip? PV Marla Quinlan Finished

Hi! I'm not sure what you're up to or if you'd even be free, but I was wondering if you'd be able to hang out in Diagon Alley next Saturday (July 13th) for the day. I was planning on getting a pet at the end of the trip, would you be willing to come with me and help me choose? Also, if you'd be allowed to and if you have the money, maybe you could get one too!

Ruby x
For once, Ruby didn't bother with the proper, formal letter format. This was to Marla, for goodness sake. She also knew that the owl would be able to find Marla even without an address, although she didn't understand how. The Slytherin folded the letter, slipped it into an envelope, and tied it to the foot of one of her her family's owls. She watched as it flew away, and then she turned back to continue what she was doing, hoping that Marla would reply soon and that they could have a fun outing in a week's time.

[quote]It had been only a few days at Koko's house, and pretty it was, but Marla was ready to go home. America was... Weird. They drove on the left side, weirdos, not to mention their obsession with hamburgers! Yeah, they're good, but not that good. Chill out. Not to mention, Los Angeles was unbelievably hot compared to Scotland. Even with air conditioning, the girl could barely breathe. She just wanted to go back.

Sitting in the living room of the estate, Marla's nose was in the pages of a book, as per usual. It was called My Life as a Squib, an autobiography by Angus Buchanan. Now this may seem irrelevant, and she wasn't very into it, after all, she had only just started it... But Marla Quinlan was believed to be a squib for her whole life. The fact that this could have been her, it was mind-blowing. Thank god she wasn't one though, being a witch was the best thing that had ever happened in her life. It was an escape, Hogwarts was her home. Somewhere that she had numerous adventures, and people she even called family. The thought made her body feel warm, a smile tugging at her lips.

Or at least until the flap of wings could be heard in the distance, and all of a sudden a mysterious object was hurled at her head. "Bloody hell!" She exclaimed, immediately cupping her hand around the part of her head that was hit. That hurt. What in the world was it? Looking down was a big beige owl staring at her directly in the eyes, head tilted to the side with a letter in its beak. "Clumsy little thing.." Marla grabbed the letter from the owls grasp and gave it a small stroke on it's head in thanks. She tore it open and read through as quickly as possible. This was the first letter she had ever gotten, ever. Who could it possibly be?

Ruby Cazares. This was only getting better! A girl who she had instantly clicked with, an unquenchable flame in those electric blue eyes of hers. She smiled to herself. Ruby Cazares wanted to meet her somewhere. Ruby Cazares! Oh, that girl was a riot. And she liked it. Marla immediately shot up and looked around a living room. There had to be something she could write with... In the corner of her eye, the lion spotted a pen on the coffee table and some papers. She ran over, grabbing both and knelt down on the floor to begin writing.

Ruby,
Hey! I'm actually in America right now. It's crazy, I have to tell you everything when we see each other, but if they have floo powder here I would love to. Diagon Alley is absolutely gorgeous, and I heard they have a great ice cream parlor as well if you'd like to go... And a pet?! What kind? I bet you're going for an owl or a cat, something like that. I've spent most of my money on books, honestly, but I probably have some more in my bag that I can scrounge up! I probably don't even have a galleon... But I can't wait. We haven't seen each other in so long. It would be awesome to see you before school starts.

Best regards,
Marla ツ❤

For a while, she stood there staring at the letter, rereading it endlessly. Was she being too hyper? Hopefully Ruby wouldn't mind. Either way, Marla was ecstatic. What if she did have enough money to get a pet before school started? Oh, that would be wonderful. And even if she didn't, Ruby would have one! She would get to pet and play with whatever animal she got all the time. That was great in it's own way. Marla hastily folded up the letter and gave it back to the owl, sending the bird back on its way. With a smile, she plopped back down on the couch and went back to reading on page thirteen. July thirteenth was surely going to be a day to remember.

When the owl brought Marla's reply back, Ruby couldn't help but start uncontrollably smiling for the rest of the day. This was going to be so much fun! Just the thought of Marla as she read the letter over made her day so much better. She scrambled to write a reply, snatching up the nearest writing tool and paper that she could find.

America?! Why are you in America? I'm quite sure that there's an interesting story behind that, so I'll wait to hear it when we can discuss it over ice cream or a drink – pumpkin juice or tea or something. While we're on this topic, what's your favourite drink? What about your favourite flavour of ice cream?

Yes, a pet! It's crazy, right? I think it's time though, and seeing all the adorable little creatures running around Hogwarts after the pet ban was lifted only made me more eager to get one. I haven't decided what type yet, but I reckon I'll know when I find the right one for me. If you don't have enough money, I could help with that. No one in my household would notice if a few extra galleons mysteriously disappeared.

I feel the same way, I can't wait to see you! Don't tell me everything through letters, though, it isn't quite the same as exchanging tales in person. I can wait less than a week to get answers to some of my questions.

Ruby x

She was grinning foolishly as she gave the owl the letter, her thoughts occupied with the girl that she had somehow clicked with so quickly. It was true, she would wait in apprehension – counting down the days until they could finally see each other again. How wonderful it was to have a true, close friend at last…

[quote]It was a true understatement to say that the experience of receiving Ruby's letter was a blur. Honestly, Marla barely remembered writing a letter. If Ruby's note wasn't there for proof, the girl might have been convinced the whole thing was going on in her brain. Okay, yes, she was being dramatic, but how could she not? Ruby was someone that she could truly call the sister she never had, and Marla missed her so, so much. Seeing her again felt like a dream.

So when another owl swooped through the window, Marla took a quick glance at her book, noting she was at page 113 so she wouldn't lose her spot. She shut it tight and approached the owl, thankful it didn't hit her in the head again. "You're getting plenty of exercise today.." She stated to the bird as she practically ripped the letter from its beak with excitement. As if it couldn't get better, she sped through the letter and grinned to herself. Would Ruby really give her money for a cat? Oh, an angel she was. Marla honestly couldn't name many people who would do that for her. Especially because she didn't have her family's wealth for the time being. She ran away from them, for god's sake.

Not that it mattered, she was more grateful than ever that she had mustered the courage to do so. If not, who knew if she'd be able to go to Hogwarts or not? Even if this had ruined her relationship (even more than it was) forever, Marla didn't regret it one bit. She wouldn't have met Ruby, Emile, Meenauh, Kyle... But that didn't matter right now. Yeah, 'friendship is magic', but she needed to act on it. So, she grabbed the pen she had used previously and a fresh piece of paper, beginning to write.

Wow, that was super quick! Your owl must be, magic or something. Well, it probably is. Everything in Hogwarts is magic. I think. Wait, no, nobody is at Hogwarts anymore. I keep forgetting! And hmm, favorite drink? Anything hot. I really like hot cocoa, tea, coffee, that kind of stuff. I love them all pretty equally! As for ice cream, I've never had it? It sounds delicious, but I've never had the chance. But all of them look delicious... Maybe you can recommend a flavor? And speaking of that, what about you? I mean, I'm pretty sure you have good taste. We should try it sometime! It looks delicious.

It is crazy! If you get a pet I'm snuggling him alll the time (of course, if its alright with you I mean), and I can't believe they banned pets in the first place. How can they resist their little faces, right? And would you really do that for me?! I don't know, I don't want to take your money. Or your family's! And I don't really have the fund (nor income) to pay you back. But thanks for offering!

And yes, this is going to be so much fun. Trust me, the America thing is a story. You won't believe what happened... On July thirteenth we are going to be a force to be reckoned with! Though I don't know what that means exactly... It sounded cool in my head. Hopefully, it sounds cool when you're reading it? I don't know, explaining it kind of ruins the epic-ness. But anyway, I can't wait to see you. It's been forever. I think I might stay in the Leaky Cauldron for the night of the thirteenth then by the way, if you're up for sharing a room. Honestly, I could go on for hours, but my hands are starting to hurt, so... At least we'll have more to talk about in person, right?

Best regards,
Marla ☺

Frantically reading the letter, Marla scribbled a small smiley face on the end of her name. That wouldn't come off too strong probably. Right? She didn't want to scare Ruby away... They had so much in common. It would be a shame. That most likely wasn't the case though. If the Slytherin was so fickle about friends, she would have run away a long time ago. Especially because Marla wasn't the best-behaved student, with the brunette being a prefect and all. Nevertheless, just thinking about going to Diagon Alley with her made the lion smile. She grabbed a throw pillow from the couch and squealed into it, tossing the thing onto the ground and looking at her hands. She was going to be home. Home with her friend who she called home. And it was going to be perfect.

Ruby was known to many as being cold and unemotional. In several of her old schools, people stayed away from her because she terrified them. It was something about her, perhaps the danger, the look in her eyes, the fact that she didn't need anyone, the power that she seemed to have within her, the confidence. A number of people that she had met in her short lifetime would have laughed at the mere thought that Ruby would ever come to be so soft around someone of her age, to make a close friend – a best friend, even, that she loved more than almost anyone. Yet there were a few that saw this side of her. The playful, the cheerful, the loving. Perhaps she was just lonely. Maybe she always had been. Even with all the experience she might have lacked in the friend department, especially considering she didn't know how to react to most girls because she had grown up being close friends with boys, she somehow managed to make this work. She was blessed with this angel of a Gryffindor that was her friend, Marla Quinlan.

I like those too! I think they're best in the winter, though. Personally, I don't have a favourite drink, but there are a lot that I like. Also, you've never had ice cream? How?! Oh, we are so fixing that. Again, I don't really have a favourite of many things, but I certainly like mint (or mint chocolate chip), coconut, raspberry sorbet, and strawberry quite a lot.

Duh, of course you are. That's not even worth questioning. You may snuggle with my pet and your own assuming you want one/are allowed it, of course. If you do truly want a pet, you will take the money, I insist. Think of it as a gift, not as something that needs to be paid back. Wait, why were pets even banned…?

Yes, we will be! They won't know what hit 'em. (Picture me smirking here. I know you know what it looks like.) Of course I'd be up for sharing a room! That sounds lovely. Now, save your poor hands and don't write back unless you must. As much as I adore receiving your replies, you should save it for when we're in person.

As if Marla could scare Ruby away if she tried. No, the Gryffindor was stuck with her now. Ruby couldn't wait for the 13th. Like Marla had said, they would be a force to be reckoned with. She had to force herself to not bounce around, squealing with excitement. Instead, she sat still at her desk, still grinning stupidly. It was going to be perfect.

[quote]Giggling to herself in sheer exhilaration, thankfully there was nobody else around. She looked like a mad woman. But how could Marla help herself? Picturing Ruby with a kitten, or an owl, rat... Maybe even a toad in her arms as they kept their eyes out for the most bizarre of things. And best of all, they could go to Quality Quidditch Supplies. After learning about the game, Marla was completely indulged and very keen on the idea of being recruited for the team. The first time she stepped foot into that store was magical, and if first years were allowed to own brooms she might have spent all her money on one instead of her supplies. Thankfully she didn't have to do that anymore, however, because at the Gryffindor scavenger hunt she won one! Maybe because Ruby was on the team, she could teach her how to fly sometime? Speaking of the Slytherin, before Marla knew it, another letter was laying in her hands. She went to grab another piece of paper and frowned realizing that it was her last sliver of parchment. She'd have to make this letter one to remember.

Yeah, stuff like that does taste better in the winter, doesn't it? Somehow Scotland manages to stay freezing even in the middle of summer on occasions, so sometimes I still have the stuff on occasion. But pumpkin juice is surprisingly pretty good! When I first overheard people talking about it in Diagon Alley in September, I was kind of grossed out. But it's just because they drown the stuff in sugar. And no, haven't had ice cream yet! All of those flavors sound delicious.. Especially the strawberry. God, I'm getting hungry now.

Yeees! I volunteer to give your pet all the snuggles ever. Trust me, Cazares Jr won't know what hit him. Or her. Or neither? You get what I mean. But about buying me a pet, it's really fine, I think I'll owl my uncle and ask him for a few galleons. He won't mind. I hope. But as for pets being banned... I don't know. What could they have possibly done? Mass genocide on the students with their scary claws? At least they're back though, but I'm kind of disappointed we aren't allowed to have dogs. They are really hyper, but have you seen them with their little ears? Ugh, I love them.

Aaaaand I have officially concluded that this is going to be the most awesome trip. Ever. I mean, cute animals, ice cream, Leaky Cauldron... A weird combination, but you can't really go wrong with it, right? Also, I'm really sorry but this is my last piece of paper so I won't be able to respond. At least we're seeing each other in a few days, right? Which shop should we meet at? That's all for now. Seriously though, I can't wait. This is gonna be so fun!

See ya,
Marla

She didn't even bother to proofread the letter this time. It was Ruby! Her friend. Marla folded the letter until it was a small square and sent the owl off with it, plopping back down on the couch. While being in America was... A bit scary, there was one thing for certain: Marla Quinlan would not be sleeping at all tonight. How could she, with all this excitement running through her brain like a marathon? A smile spread across her face as she closed her eyes to attempt to take a nap. Hopefully, by the time she woke up, there would be another letter awaiting her on the coffee table...

Another letter flew in and Ruby smiled, reaching for her equipment again.

Like I said, we'll have to fix the fact that you haven't had ice cream yet. Just a warning – it's like most cold things in that it's easy to get brain freeze, so watch out.

I think dogs would require too much maintenance. They're loud, need a lot of attention, and couldn't just be allowed to roam the school. They need things at inconvenient times, and if students were allowed to have them, then they'd either be prioritizing their dog over their school work and class (which is stupid because that's what they're here for) or they'd have to find someone to take care of it (I have no idea who that would be or how). I could go on and on, but I'll spare you that lecture and simply leave it at this: I understand why dogs aren't allowed. Are you more of a dog person, then?

Well, of course it is. This will be a day to remember, my friend! I'm so excited. Don't worry about not being able to reply, it's best to save it for when we're in person anyway. Just meet me in the Leaky Cauldron at 9:00 am.

Ruby x

After sending the last letter for now, Ruby settled down with a book, trying to contain her excitement, but it was a futile attempt. She would not be able to rest properly tonight until she calmed down, but that was fine by her if it meant that she got to see Marla soon.
