The Staircases Move!?

Odette was late.
It was her first day of real classes after a lifetime of homeschooling, and she was late.
Of course, sheβd stayed up far too late on her first night in Hogwarts, unable to sleep in an unfamiliar bed so far from home. Sheβd managed to drag herself out of bed just in time for breakfast in the Great Hall, but now she was late, and it was all because of that chatty, vain painting!
After a rushed breakfast β mostly a half-drunk mug of hot chocolate and a hastily buttered scone β sheβd set off for class, trying to navigate the Grand Staircase in hopes of arriving early. But on her way, sheβd spotted a portrait of a very beautiful woman and paused, caught up in the elegance of the figure.
It had completely slipped her mind that the paintings here were sentient.
The woman, delighted at the attention, had happily begun sharing her extensive beauty secrets, entrancing Odette with advice on everything from lavender water for clear skin to some sort of rosemary tonic for βfull-bodied curls.β Whatever that meant. By the time Odette managed to politely break away, promising to try the herbal remedy for split ends, she turned around β only to find that the staircases had shifted.
Because, apparently, that was a thing here. Right.
After a bewildering ten minutes spent retracing her steps, a few minutes of standing around looking utterly lost, and another eternity of wandering down identical hallways, Odette finally thought she was making progress. She was headed to Potions. Or, at least, she hoped so β she was somewhere on the second floor, although it was becoming increasingly hard to tell. Sheβd finally spotted a staircase that looked promising and had just begun descending, only to feel the steps shudder and lurch beneath her feet.
βNo!β Odette shrieked, grabbing onto the stone banister for dear life, her knuckles white as she squeezed her eyes shut.
This school was mad. Utterly mad!
When she finally cracked her eyes open, she had no idea where she was or how sheβd even get across the room without getting hopelessly turned around again.
βIβm going to die on these stairs.β She muttered miserably to no one in particular, her voice echoing up the vast, empty shaft of staircases. Defeated, she plopped herself down on the step, burying her face in her hands. The feeling of being so thoroughly, entirely lost was sinking in, and her frustration was quickly turning into despair.
She could practically hear Rosieβs voice in her head, scolding her for being so late on her first day. And if the shifting stairs didnβt finish her off, she was pretty sure Rosie would, when she found out just how terribly sheβd bungled her first morning at Hogwarts.

The Ever-changing Staircases had always felt like a puzzle to Oliver, an elusive, sentient riddle that liked to meddle with the new-comers to the school, one that heβd finally learned to solve. Nearly three years at Hogwarts had taught him the trickβit was all about timing. The stairs always rested for a moment, waiting in their current position as if testing the patience of anyone brave enough to step on. All Oliver had to do was time his movements to match the stair's, anticipating when theyβd shift and moving in sync.
Oliver's inky Hogwarts robe and bright yellow Hufflepuff scarf swayed with his every step as he marched, leaving the Ground Floor, eyeing the staircase that had aligned itself in his direction. He watched carefully as the stairs sat idly, but he knew better than to trust their stillness. Oliver waited, patiently staring at the magnificent collection of portraits converse to eachother, one was a painting of an elegant, renaissance woman, clearly happy with herself for whatever reason, then, the staircase ahead suddenly shifted, the stone sliding against eachother making a gritty sound, its path breaking away and connecting somewhere else, like a clever trap laying in wait for an unsuspecting foot. Oliver let out a slight nod to the stair, grinning that heβd passed its test, he took a step forward only when another staircase moved towards him, and steadied, offering a new route upward.
This same pattern continued until he finally reached the next flight. But Oliver found himself hesitating. Was Charms even worth the trek? If he walked in this late, The Professor would know why, but his classmates wouldnβtβtheyβd just see the usual sickly, pale Oliver staggering in mid-lesson. He stopped, glancing up toward the 2nd Floor: He could go to the Study Room, revise on his own, maybe even get a moment to rest. With a sigh, he turned on his heel, facing an empty part of the platform where Oliver suspected a staircase would soon redirect, connecting to the closest corridor of the 2nd Floor. As his exact predictions occurred, he heard the quiet call of a young, feminine voice exclaim something, "No!" Oliver looked around, startled by the exclamation, but saw nothing, brushing it off as some portrait invading another portrait in their usual antics.
As Oliver ascended, his ears caught a faint, frustrated mumble echoing from above. At first, Oliver assumed it was just another one of the portraits grumbling about its usual troubles. But then he heard the voice mumble again, "Iβm going to die on these stairs," in a tone that was unmistakably realβand understandably annoyed. Oliver heart skipped a beat as he realised this wasnβt a painting but a student
Oliver quickened his pace, his exhaustion forgotten as concern set in. Who was stranded up there? He raced up the staircase, his footsteps forcing a booming echo through the winding staircase for all the paintings to hear. Oliver made it to the top of the stairs to see a much smaller girl, a First Year perched on the final step. The 2nd Year looked bewildered by the girl, looking around for anybody else, clearly something was wrong.
"Um- Hello?"
Unsure whether he should tap her shoulder, get her off the stairs before they shift once again, or even just leave her there to be with her thoughts. The girl looked as frustrated as she was helpless, Oliver scratched the back of his neck, unsure how to approach, thoughts lingering as he weighed his options, his mind bouncing back and forth like a game of wizardβs chess.
Finally, he cleared his throat, softly, just enough to get her attention without startling her.

Heels of her palms pressed against her eyes, Odette tried to regulate her unsteady breathing, teeth gritted against the frustrated tears that burned behind tightly closed eyes. She was far too prideful to give into them, determined to get out of this situation with her dignity as intact as possible.
The silly old hat had made her a Gryffindor for a reason, had it not? She wouldnβt let some spiteful, mischievous stairs get the better of her!
Just as she was gathering herself, she thought she heard a tentative, "Um- Hello?β The sound was faint, barely above the echoing hum of her own frustrated thoughts. Her hands slowly slid from her face, lashes fluttering against her cheeks as she blinked away the dancing vision spots, her ears straining to catch any other sounds.
A throat cleared itself nearby, and Odette instinctively jumped to her feet, half-expecting an angry professor to materialize before her after having found her sulking around the staircases.
But instead, her bleary gray-blue eyes settled on a figure who was decidedly not a Hogwarts professor. Rather, the boy before her looked young β though taller than her and lanky, like a puppy that hadnβt yet quite grown into its paws. Clad in Hufflepuff colors, he seemed to be around a third-year, if she had to guess, and was staring at her with what she assumed was a look of concerned pity.
That made her bristle a bit.
βIβm not lost!β Odette blurted out immediately, her tone slightly sharper than she intended. The moment the words escaped, she clamped a hand over her mouth, feeling her face flush. His expression β clearly one of concern, not pity β had put her on the immediate defensive. Embarrassed by her outburst, she brushed down the creases in her robes and cleared her throat, attempting to recover her composure.
βSorry,β she murmured, her voice more subdued as she straightened up, cheeks still pink and hands now returned to her sides. βIβmβ¦ Iβm really not that lost. I just got a little sidetracked talking to the paintingsβ¦ that's all.β It wasnβt a complete lie, though it felt closer to a guilty admission than an excuse.
βIβm Odette Robbins,β she introduced, more evenly this time, though her gaze flickered down in mild embarrassment, feet shuffling on her stone step of isolation. βIβm a first-year, andβ¦ well, yes, I suppose I might be a little late for class.β Her grimace deepened. βDidβ¦ did the teacher send you to find me?β
The very thought made her positively shudder. Being late was embarrassing enough, but imagining a teacher having to send an older student to fetch her was absolutely mortifying. Odette hated being rude and she hated being useless.

"Odette... I'm Oliver, Oliver Thorn."
He stood there, half in shock, but naturally also half bemused listening the young Witch ramble on and on, her words tumbling over each other in what seemed like a haphazard attempt to explain... something, or hide it. Odette's cheeks flamed a vivid red, growing redder still with each breathless word, mentioning she was a first year, supposing she may have been late, sidetracked by talking to a painting Oliver had already guessed to be the renaissance women giggling to herself from before. Oliver looked down at the witch crouched on the staircase, she seemed to catch herself at last, pausing mid-sentence as her gaze broke off of Oliver to stare down, her black uniform shoes slid an inch on the enchanted brick step, her flustered expression unmistakable.
"We really should get off these stairs, they've been staying still for long, they'll move 'Out of nowhere' as your Year likes to say." Oliver grinned, gesturing with his arm to travel to the nearest corridor.
With a gentle movement, Oliver extended his pale, thin arm to Odette, offering her a hand to help her off the staircase. His other arm dropped to her height, and as he leaned forward, the edges of his robe spread across the stone steps like a soft, dark pool. His scarf, too, slipped from his shoulders, the yellow, knitted fabric draping downward, almost touching the worn stone between his feet, yet he hardly noticed as he focused on Odette, ready to steady her if she stumbled, to fall from the top of the stairs would be a very painful way back down.
"And no, I haven't been sent by a teacher." He explained, "I was returning to my Charms Lesson, well, going to Study about it at least, I was busy-"
Oliver realised how incriminating his next few words would be, his mouth hung open, words half-formed on his lips, his mind raced, scrambling to construct a reasonable story. He gave a slight, awkward cough, stalling for time as he averted his gaze, a nervous smile tugging at his mouth.
"I was... Right- I got my classes mixed up! Silly me! I went all the way to the Basement just to find out it was Charms right now, not Potions." He offered a shrug, desperately hoping it would pass as believable.
