A Giant's Rite
Alone. Listening to the calm passage of time. Lucian skipped a couple stones across the still Great Lake. The ripples traveled in pristine distance of each other. Interference of construction and destruction with energy. The tones of the skips combined with the wind and chirping of birds was all that could be heard. The cloudy gloom that blocked the sunlight gave more sense of calm and lack of detail towards the scenery. The calm necessary before a storm. Lucian's shoes were off, exposing his rather large feet. Dirtied and freezing against the cold gravel that separated the freezing water from the soft grass. The separation of comfort and discord, between classy order and Neanderthalic acts. Alone... he didn't have to act. He didn't have to keep himself in check, he didn't have to keep listening to the thoughts and mannerism he was taught. The voices of his family. His sisters, his brothers, his cousins, aunts, great aunts, uncles, everyone speaking their minds at him. The do's and don'ts of a pure-blood who had tainted blood. Blood that everyone held as a curse rather than a gift. This was the hatred the Allum family held for the "mistake" that Lucian's grandparents had made. To make his mother a half-giant, to make Lucian and his siblings part-giants. For many members of the Allum family, there was consideration to wipe Lucian and his family branch away... yet mercy was shown.
To continue the bloodline, to keep it pure. To never mention the "curse", to never mention the mistake, to forget and dilute. To keep continuing the legacy, the achievements necessary to be an Allum and never speak out against the family. To dilute the "curse" further till it could never be seen or known again. To re-purify the Allum name and forget Giants were ever a thing in the wizarding world. To consider them scum, a rotting piece in the perfection. A disease that needed to be purged from the body. Such a rotting and disgusting thought. One that only fueled the rage in the young Hufflepuff boy. Young, 11 years in age, but still tall and stoic in appearance. It was time to just let it go for a bit. To let the voices and teachings be forgotten for a second, to no longer have to check his rage. Deep breathes escaped from the boy. First starting slow, calm, timed, and quiet. Yet, with each breathe they grew in volume and eventually had a loss of tempo. The boy couldn't help, but throw a rock of rather large size with extreme force 12+9 = 21 str. It no longer skipped, plunging and causing waves to follow with it. Crashing and causing crows to be spooked by its volume as the boys own voice followed: "Sdifain! Id'r nenl rdifain! I en whu I en, fid I heya du haina. Culrdeldrirr! Teildan eln Rainaisiran! I ralld, I'n rula. Mairar iful nairar eweirr, fid irrui err llaar raica ulrirr el esn'r ralrdh eweirr!1" The giant's tongue escaped and rolled in fluency. Giant's have rather large lungs, so the vowels and words that escaped had bellowing and low toned expressions. It helped convey the strength, the anger, the proof of fear and power that Giants held.
The tall Hufflepuff let the rage take control for a few seconds, he kicked the gravel at the shores and continued his rant: "Whirr sel'd I fa dhair? Whirr nu I heya du caaf hainailr. Eyal erula, I llaar dha sairc, I sel llaar irruis airrar wedshailr na rfaec dhair dula. I sel llaar eln raa irruis nairrird... I sel llaar nun'r renlarr... I llaes... I llaes...2. Tears began to fill his eyes... but he decided to stop. He could feel the teachings and the necessary feeling to control his emotions. He had to, he needed to as taught. To be Pure, not tainted. He hated it, but did he have a choice. Lucian wished to embrace his Giant-nature, but the trouble and problems that would follow. Could he bare it? He was unsure.
He sat, and curled his legs up and placed his head between his legs. Sniffles escaped his voice, fear, shame, and not knowing. He was so excited for Hogwarts as he believed he finally escaped the eyes that watched him at home, but they never left. Not on the train, not on the boat ride, not even now. He still felt watched, and perhaps he was being watched.
1Stupid! It's damn stupid! I am who I am, but I have to hide. Constantly! Taunted and Ridiculed! I left, I'm gone. Miles upon miles away, but you all feel like only an arm's length away!
2Why can't I be this? Why do I have to keep hiding. Even alone, I feel the risk, I can feel your eyes watching me speak this tone. I can feel and see your disgust... I can feel mom's sadness... I fear... I fear..

@Lucian Allum
The silence that followed, felt like a gift. A moment of respite for the surrounding plant life and any animals that may have opted to hide rather than run from the thunderous voice. A voice that, remarkably, used the tongue of giants. Who was this young stranger that knew these words, so seldom spoken on Hogwarts' grounds? It had certainly been enough to lure Hugh off his own beaten path.
So he decided to observe in silence. This young boy, somewhat tall for a first year, slowly piquing the half-giant's interest. More like him and Healy? It felt like a vision of his past had come to teach him a lesson. The world of magic did always work in mysterious ways. Here he was, preparing himself for his final year. Preparing for the worst, for what was out there in the real world. And now came this young cub. Someone new… like him?
A cub, that began to irritate him towards the end of his sad little monologue. Poor lost little boy, not knowing where he fitted in. Did he not realize the rest of his class felt the same, half-breed or not? Of course not. How was he when he was a firstie? He had been weak and afraid. Now grown into an angry and intolerant young man.
"Yui llaes whed?" "You fear what?"
He felt his own voice cut through the air this time. No doubt he'd give the kid a good scare. His dark eyes sternly trying to connect with the boy's gaze if he offered him one. The first step, was acknowledging what exactly stood in front of you. A wounded animal you just cornered into a dead-end? Or a lost boy in need of… well, a chat, maybe? Perhaps Hugh hadn't exactly thought this through. It's not like he was explicitly fond of talking. But in this case, he had to know…
What was the boy about to think or do? He just came face to face with someone that actually understood his words. Someone that, with Hugh's nine-feet height, was clearly like him. Unless the kid was a fool that did not have anything to do with giants at all. And just thought he had found his own fun little secret language to nerd out on. Now that would make Hugh pissed off.

The boys soft sobs had already stopped and vanished to the win. The voice he heard, creeping and escaping from the woods behind him. His ears twitched, perked a little at the tone. While a question of believing he was alone swept his mind, he was more curious by the words he heard. Was it an echo of his own? No, different words besides fear was spoken. He swiftly stood, losing a bit of balance having almost slipped and requiring re-footing to keep himself up. The loose gravel beneath his feet wasn't meant to stay sturdy. It crumbled with his movements, swayed and disobeyed as the boy was simply trying to stand. Or rather, maybe his legs were in shock from his tantrum and of the boy that stood across from him now.
The stern dark eyes were rather concerning, when was the last time Lucian had to lift his chin upward to speak face to face with another person. He always had to look down when speaking with his father and some of his siblings as well at his current age. Of course there are still adults who are taller than the boy... for now. Yet, this students was clearly different. The deep tone in his voice, Giant tongue was a difficult magic language to pronounce, not just learn. There large bodies provided large lungs, deep and low breathes with bellowing speech. Fluency wasn't the easiest thing, even for Lucian's Pureblooded father. The only other voice he heard the language spoken from. Sometimes Lucian was able to pronounce certain words his father struggled a bit with despite years of practice. There was just a natural feeling to it that Lucian was able to grasp and understand through a bit of reading as well. Yet he never actually heard such a... refined way to speak in the way of mountains.
The young Hufflepuff was scared, caught off guard. What are the chances? What was he to say. He couldn't help but feel fear at the boy who towered in such height. This fear, perhaps it was a natural response and showed why height and strength meant a lot in Giant hierarchy. Was it possible this guy was also looking down on Lucian? With that stare, and they way he asked the question. While Lucian wasn't sure, he needed to say something back. This familiarity, it was clear this other student was most likely another part-giant or maybe even half like Lucians mother from his height. Yet, what was Lucian to say? There were too many fears to think of. Afraid that he wouldn't get to embrace his giant nature, fear his family will punish him if he tries, fear his father could be punished alongside him. The disdain Lucian's siblings clearly show him, and the fact his mother cried when he spoke such in the magical language. Perhaps he was afraid other students would treat him the same, that he wouldn't be able to escape anything and that home and Hogwarts were the same. While his mind raced, his body had a more natural feeling: to not show weakness.
He straightened his body, his facial expression relaxed taking away the surprise he originally had. The boy cracked his knuckles a little, before putting his hands in their respective pockets in his cloak: "Faes dhed Gaield'r Haina. Thed Gaieldr ed Hurwesdr esa suwesnr." In truth though, the boy was afraid he'd end up being the true coward. He projected, and it felt better than admitting he himself was one. Lucian wanted and was looking for something, but what?

Hugh's head turned to look around the area. Hiding? The very concept of hiding for a person as tall as he was ridiculous. He scoffed and found himself a washed up stump of a tree, large enough for him to sit on. As he rolled up the sleeves of his thick woollen shirt, the half-giant's eyes latched back on the kid. Like a bear carefully waiting from the treeline.
"You can't hide as a giant." Hugh said. His voice now clearly revealing his Scottish descent. "And you're a fool if you start calling 'em cowards." He pointed out with a warning look on his face. "Especially if they're bigger than you."
It was a straight-up death sentence in his personal opinion. Then again, this kid likely meant for it to sound deeper than what Hugh took from it. He seemed like the thinking type. There was more intelligence behind his eyes than there ever had been in Healy's entire head. So, as a show of respect, he indulged the kid and carefully considered what he had said. Hugh's eyes narrowed as he seemed to solve a riddle in his mind.
"Haina llsun whed azesdrirr?" "Hide from what exactly?" He asked, smoothly slipping back into their shared ancient tongue. Which he also did not have a precise answer for yet. Though the longer this encounter lasted, the more he began to confirm his suspicions. No, there really was no point in hiding a giant. Still, he would like to be certain. Though he could play it as cocky as he'd like.
With a smirk crawling up his lip, he asked the boy who he really was. "Asa irrui ula ull ir?" "Are you one of us?"
And he better gave him the right answer...

A Giant's Rite
You can't hide as a Giant? Of course a Giant can hide. That's all giants have been doing for the years, centuries that have passed. Hunted and despised at least in this region of the world. Forced to corner tips of mountains or islands where they're forced to hide. Perhaps it's for the best, as wizards and muggles can be insufferable due to their natural fear of the unknown. Fear of the strength that Giants have. They're large, and while their intelligence is better than that of lowly trolls, to be compared to such a race for intellect is rather insulting. Sure giants weren't on the same level as typical wizards, or even had negative shortcomings like a short temper or preferring strength over wit.
As Lucian spoke with the upper-classman, it wasn't similar to that of his siblings or mother. This boy seemed more in-tune with Giant nature, the simpleness in speech, the lack of complexity. Not to say he was dumb or anything, rather he got straight to the point of his thoughts and words. No double meaning, not searching for hidden meaning or metaphors. It could make one wonder if speaking with such a person would be easy or difficult. If you over thought it, then you may utilize similes or anecdotes that would only cause confusion. Yet, simply just stating what should be obvious would progress the conversation to the real solution.
The words that left the grizzled man in front of Lucian didn't intimidate him if that was what the man was attempting to do. At first the boy was surprised and slightly off tempo. However, once Lucian has regained his thoughts and his temper, then he can easily manipulate the confidence he has. "Olrirr Pesd."1 Left his voice. He kept his distance, unsure if what he said could make himself seem inferior in the other boys mind. Afterall, Lucian recalls his father telling him that due to half or part giants being smaller in height and not as strong, they were looked down upon by full-giants. He cleared his voice. It was obvious that batting around questions or trying to detail his talk wasn't going to make things easier. If this was like an actual conversation between real giants, then it should be quick, simple, and straight to the point. Yet, Lucian didn't want to reveal everything. He was unsure of the trust he should be putting in this other student. While this was the only part-giant he was meeting for the first time outside his family, he couldn't just trust them with everything. "Hide from my family. As I said, I'm part giant. My mother is half, and she disapproves the blood that I and you have. She and everyone in my family except for me and my father disapprove our Giant heritage. I hate them for it. If word gets out that I'm not acting as I should, I'm certain I'll be punished for it. I have to hide... ilraica irrui... Giants are still hiding, all we do is hide. I fear even here we do."2 That last phrase had a hint of jealousy in it. While they both shared some heritage, Lucian did not fully associate or trust himself towards this other student. He could feel a bit of anger, unnecessary but still present in his mind.

A Giant's Rite

@Lucian Allum
You don't know who I am... kid. At least that's what he wanted to tell the boy in front of him. The kid had made a lot of assumptions, just now. Like Hugh said, giants couldn't hide. When he himself was born into a pureblood family, they tried to hide him with the other disgraced family member. Shove 'em all under the rug, as they say. His mother forced living up north in the wilderness. His father crawling back home like a coward. His uncle choosing to be ignorant out of spite. But Hugh'd grow up and join the wizarding world, all the same. The damage done to his family because of his blood proved his point all the more. Giants can not hide.
"You are not. Hiding." Hugh grunted. "Look at you. I found you and knew it in seconds. You think the world won't see?" He took a deep breath as his eyes grew furious. "Well they will!"
He stood up and stepped closer, coming to stand 'face-to-face' with the other boy. Pebbles scattering under the weight of his heavy boots. Up close, Hugh looked much younger than people often thought at first. Sure, he had a pair of large trimmed sideburns, but underneath there was still the smooth face of a very young man. His lips were pursed under the look of resentment he offered the other. Then, as his eyes seemed to realize something, the entirety of his face eased back into a calm understanding demeanour.
Similar to how Hugh looked different up close. So too did the kid. Because he was, in fact, just a kid. The half-giant's head turned away as he sighed. "Look kid." He said softly. "You need to learn quickly that they will always know what you are, eventually." He poked a finger into the other's chest. "You're dumb. And for now, the world and the people in this castle will agree with me."
If he saw any sign of protest rising up in the kid's eyes, he'd shut it down immediately. "No, no" Hugh's long finger wiggled in front of the other's face. "You and your family can try all you want. You'll never be safe. They'll come for you. Especially you. When a little pureblood rich golden boy sees you and put two and two together, they'll want to challenge you. Take down a big target like us, earns them respect, you see." His finger turned back to boring a hole into the boy's chest. While Hugh's own chest puffed up as he stood proud and tall.
"Su irrui saira du naad dhan haen ul." "So you rise to meet them head on."
Hugh wanted to grab the boy by his shoulders and shake him awake. This was like being faced with his own past self. What an idiot he had been back then. Still small and curious. Now he had learned the hard way how this world kept on turning. And this kid clearly had not had the wake-up call yet. A giant forced to hide? Ridiculous. Giants were born to fight. Giants were born to stand tall. It might have even been the one thing he and Quinn were of the same mind on.
The half-giant eagerly awaited the boy's answer. He felt almost excited to see the boy understand what he had just said. Another brother to join the fight. Another soldier in their war for equality.
