Thora trudged out onto the open grounds of Hogwarts, the bright blue sky and warm sunshine beckoning to her. The young Slytherin glanced wistfully at the other students swimming in the lake as she dragged black bins almost her size and huge recycling bags behind her. Well, at least the young second year didn’t have to carry all the trash bins. Thora could see Katrina Walker, a Gryffindor her age, trailing just behind her. As the girls continued walking in a rather pleasant silence, Thora spotted a few small piles of litter along the path, and motioned to Katrina.
”Katrina, I think we could start here,” Thora began rather awkwardly. The Slytherin hadn’t originally planned to do an errand with Katrina, anyways. She had just returned from Ireland for a short break and had wanted to help out. After all, it wasn’t like she had made any friends over her first year at Hogwarts. Well, there was Margo White, and Bridget Collins, whom Thora had rather liked... And there was Katrina Walker, the auburn-haired Gryffindor standing next to her.
The two second years had been assigned to complete trash duty together, and Thora was looking forward to getting to know Katrina. Even though social interactions weren’t her forte, Hogwarts’ summer camp would be a great place to meet new people, right?

Katrina trudged behind Thora glad that the weather had turned out sunny. The Gryffindor was lugging huge black and blue bins, and was feeling productive. The red-head noticed Thora looking longingly at the kids swimming not that far away. It was Thora’s first day back and Katrina wondered why she had chosen to work today instead of enjoying her first day back at Hogwarts; maybe Katrina would ask later.

They arrived at a litter dotted spot and Thora spoke up sounding quite unsure of herself, “Katrina, I think we could start here.” Katrina nodded in approval and picked up the first piece of rubbish, a rather old looking water bottle and tossed it into one of the recycling bins. She bent down to grab another piece, a stepped on banana peel, and plopped that in the rubbish bin.

Katrina had become bored with not much to do besides swim or be social. She had already swam quite a bit, and didn’t know many people at all. Instead the student’s time was spend reading in various places, sadly- she had become bored of reading and had not much else to do, so she signed up to help pick up trash. Apparently, Thora and her both signed up and were paired together, so there they were.

Thora glanced at Katrina, who was beginning to pick up trash off the ground. Following the Gryffindor’s lead, Thora grabbed several stray plastic bags and tossed them into her trash bin. A crumpled piece of paper was picked up and a length of twine detangled from the grass. She was hoping to strike a conversation while the pair was working, so she began thinking about what to say. Thora had only initiated a conversation with Bridget Collins in late May, when she woke the fellow second year up in time for Astronomy.
“So—What have you been doing during the first part of Summer Camp?” Thora asked. Awkward, yes, but it served its purpose. Also, it was an honest question—Thora has spent the first portion of Summer break at home, so she had yet to learn the daily schedule and events.
Swimming looked fun, but one could only spend so much time in the water. And cabins? Thora had no idea what she was supposed to do to join a cabin. Maybe she could ask Katrina.
Even though the auburn-haired Gryffindor had yet to answer her previous questions, Thora ventured, “Do you know how we get cabins?” The Slytherin cringed at her bad placement of words. Hopefully the Gryffindor would understand...

Katrina picked up a few soda cans and dropped them into a recycling bin and they fell with a satisfying ‘clank’. A bottle, two plastic shards, a moldy piece of food and a paper towel all found themselves in their respectable bins.

So—What have you been doing during the first part of Summer Camp?” Thora inquired. Katrina mumbled “Well, um— not much. There is the lake. And— uh, not much else planned,” Katrina inwardly kicked herself, she sounded like a complete moron.

A smashed soda can was chucked into the blue bin along with a plastic bag. Katrina pretended she said nothing. Katrina drug the bins over to a new spot slightly farther away and picked up a few pieces, throwing them with unnecessary force.

Do you know how we get cabins?” Thora asked another question. I’d rather Thora being the person doing the talking. I’m totally making a fool of myself in front of yet another person. Katrina addressed her question “You bring you belongings to a cabin and the cabin head- which is a student- will add you to their cabin. Well, I mean, my cabin does have an empty spot still.” Katrina managed to say this without stuttering. She had already heard the Slytherin was coming and had hoped she could join Katrina’s cabin.

This time Katrina was the one to initiate the question. It was the one she had wondered since they had been paired up, “So, why did you decide to work on your first day here?” Katrina tried to say this as polite as possible without adding ‘when you could have enjoyed the lake instead.’ On that note, Katrina flung another glass bottle into the recycling bin.

“Well, um— not much. There is the lake. And— uh, not much else planned,” Thora was shaken to attention as Katrina addressed her first question. She could easily see that the Gryffindor girl was as awkward Thora was—maybe even more so, at that moment—
“Ok...” murmured Thora. If she had to  swim every day, so be it. Anything would be better than spending the glorious days of summer cooped up in the Larkstons’ home, where the inhabitants clearly hated her now.
And the answer to Thora’s following question was promptly given. “You bring your belongings to a cabin and the cabin head-which is a student—will add you to their cabin. Well, I mean, my cabin does have an empty spot, still.” Thora  grinned. One familiar face was better than none, after all. The young second year could foresee many possible ideas where she would be lost in the camp, without guidance. But she appreciated the offer Katrina gave and the assistance she offered alongside.
After a few moments more of strange silence, Katrina broke it once more. “So, why did you decide to work on your first day here?” Thora chuckled. She honestly had no idea. Best guess? Lack of friends. Thora was friendless, and didn’t know how she would fare throughout the entire summer if she were left on her own, a lamb with surrounding predators.
”Well, I don’t really know anyone that well, so figured I might as well help out and clean up Hogwarts as best as I can.” Thora said softly.
Thora crinkled her nose, pulling a semi-dry piece of the into the trash can.  And now she realized Katrina looked guilty. Oops... thought Thora. I hope I didn’t make her feel worse.
”Say, Katrina, what’s it like, being at summer camp rather than learning at Hogwarts?” the Slytherin second year girl piped up.

Thora acknowledged Katrina’s tumble of words but said nothing more about that. it was extremely awkward because both of them didn’t do well in social situations. The Slytherin told Katrina that she didn’t know many people enough so decided to help out.

Katrina tossed a rather large pile into the recycling bin. She also disposed of an undetermined moldy item into the garbage.

Say, Katrina, what’s it like being at summer camp rather than learning at Hogwarts?” The red-head spoke up again.

I mean, I have the same routine, besides classes. I wake up- read, eat food at some point, find a quite place to read- continue to do that, then go back to the cabin and try to be social.” Katrina instantly regretted telling Thora that she did nothing but read. Why am I sharing my secrets with a practical stranger?

Several plastic bags, some soggy paper towels, a slice of old pizza, and a soda can found themselves in the right bin.

”Maybe we should continue to move around and pick up stuff farther from the cans.” Katrina didn’t wait to see if Thora followed her lead, she walked over and picked up another glass bottle from a little bit away.

Um, so- what is your favorite... color?” Katrina started talking and realized she didn’t know what she was saying and instead drew out her words awkwardly. She smiled at Thora but it looked more like a grimace.

“I mean, I have the same routine, besides classes. I wake up- read, eat food at some point, find a quiet place to read- continue to do that, then go back to the cabin and try to be social.” Katrina answered. At this, Thora smiled—she was a bookworm too, so at least they had something in common.
“Maybe we should continue to move around and pick up stuff farther from the cans,” suggested the Gryffindor.
“Sounds good, I’m thinking about the Blossomball site. And maybe we should each bring a trash bin with us,” Thora answered as brightly as she could. She trudged across the grass, wishing she had brought sunscreen. After a year of being stuck in dreary, rainy Scottish weather, the sun seemed an intruder, beating down on the students’ backs.
“Um, so- What is your favorite color?” Katrina asked, quite awkwardly.
Thora answered immediately, “I like sea green and turquoise—pale turquoise. What’s yours?”
The red haired Slytherin finally paused in her slow progress. Here was the site of the Blossomball--the beautiful oceanside. Thora grimaced—she had chosen not to attend, but had heard that...bad things, to say the least, had happened. And all the trash the students had left behind, the girls were told to help pick up. Napkins, paper plates, and utensils were strewn across the floor. Small crusts of pastries were stuck almost embedded in the ground, having been trampled underfoot.
”I guess we had better get started then,” Thora muttered, turning to Katrina. She grabbed a few paper plates and crammed them into her recycling bin.

Katrina listened to Thora, “Sounds good, I’m thinking about the Blossomball site. And maybe we should bring a trash can with us,

"Ya, I guess that would make the most since. We do need to do this or another hour."

Thora told Katrina that her favorite color was turquoise and Katrina responded with her favorite color-dark green. The Gryffindor dragged one of each bin to the Blossomball site. Katrina had heard rumors of what happened then. Katrina decided not to attend and instead stayed in her dormitory and read. A fire, dementors, and people being hurt was all part of the rumor.

Katrina picked up a few moldy pizza boxes and dropped them into her garbage can. A few moldy and half-eaten pizza slices found themselves in the gray bin as well. She gathered an armful of soda cans and they fell into the blue bins with a satisfying clatter. The red-head scavenged many bits of glass and was careful not to cut herself as they were disposed as well. The Gryffindor scoured the ground for more bits of glass and decided to speak up.

So, uh- would you like to join my, er- Cabin Lakeside?” Katrina stuttered chastising herself in her head, “I mean, it’s fine if you don’t...” She felt color rise to her cheeks, “Wait, I just realized something. Couldn’t we use the packing spell to get more of the trash in our bins?”

"Yeah, I guess that would make the most sense since we do need to do this for another hour," Katrina said, responding to Thora's suggestion of the Blossomball site. As Katrina informed Thora of her favorite color--dark green, Thora simply nodded. Pretty similar...
Finally, they reached the abandoned site of the Blossomball. It had been the topic for weeks afterward, so Thora knew about it even though she hadn't attended. Dementor attack, a horrible fire--the blackened grass and shrubbery was evidence of this. Thora shivered--the site seemed spooky- almost haunted.
The red-haired Slytherin carefully picked up a large, jagged shard of glass off the ground and tossed it into a bin. Bending down, the girl found several more small shards of glass piercing the ground, the sun reflecting off in blinding beams. The pair worked on in a comfortable silence, grabbing armfuls of trash and tossing them into bins. As thirty more minutes passed, Thora paused, wiping sweat off her forehead. The young girl wished she had brought a water bottle--the Scottish heat was sweltering.
“So, uh- would you like to join my, er- Cabin Lakeside?” Katrina stuttered, “I mean, it’s fine if you don’t...”
Slightly surprised, Thora answered. "Um... maybe? Sorry, but I don't really know what the point of cabins are... sorry..." she trailed off, her cheeks blooming bright red. Obviously, Thora knew she would be super awkward during the Summer Camp if she wandered around by herself, like normal. So, taking a deep breath, she responded to Katrina, "Sure, but is it okay if I change my mind?" the words sounded weak and hesitant, even to Thora. As soon as the Slytherin answered, Katrina spoke up again.
“Wait, I just realized something. Couldn’t we use the packing spell to get more of the trash in our bins?” Of course, thought Thora. She couldn't believe she forgot the Packing Spell.
"Oh yeah, you're right," Thora finally said, smiling at the Gryffindor. Taking her short, aspen wood wand out of her back pocket she waved it over the grounds in a sweeping motion. "Pack." To her dismay, nothing happened. "Oops," she whispered. Trying to recover her dignity as fast as she could, she indicated to Katrina with a wan smile.
"Why don't you try," she said softly.

Katrina watched as Thora attempted the packing spell. To both of their dismay, nothing happened. "Why don't you try?" the Slytherin offered.

Katrina groped through her cloak and procured her chestnut wand. She swept her wand and spoke with her little used authority, "Pack!"

For a second nothing happened, then suddenly- the garbage littering the ground flew past the two girls. Katrina rose her arms to protect her face as a large moldy slice of pizza whipped past her. Once the objects stopped moving the red-head let down her arms, she strode in the direction that the garbage had been moving. She trudged a bit into a few bushes and was about to give up when she saw it. Sitting in the bush was an old grey trunk with the hinges bent off; inside and all around it was an array of garbage. She began to giggle at the sight.

The Gryffindor hollered back at Thora, "It worked!" Katrina wasn't sure where the Slytherin was and figured she would have stayed back.

Katrina drug the trunk out of the bushes and back to where Thora was. The student began to dump armfuls of the garbage into the grey bin.

"Ow!" She exclaimed the red-head jerked her hand out of the rubbish and saw crimson blood dripping from her finger. She hurriedly brushed it on her cloak and hoped Thora hadn't seen, the cut was reasonably deep and Katrina didn't want her to freak out. Katrina continued to place the items in the bins.

After a long while of work, the trunk was cleaned out. Katrina brought out her finger. She had torn a tiny scrap of fabric from the inside of her cloak and wrapped it around her finger when she thought Thora wasn't looking. The finger had now soak through the fabric and she decided it was time to address her finger.

"I, um, cut myself." Katrina voiced her thoughts.
