There were only a few days left before the exams started and I was getting a little nervous about it. Mother had sent several letters telling me to study well, do well, have perfect grades to the exams. I had seen my cousin Peter, who had his N.E.W.T.s this year. He didn't seem that much stressed. When I asked him about it, he just replied that "like the French say, réviser c'est douter de ses capacités to study is to doubt one's abilities , plus, it's not like NEWTs are hard, you just need to listen in class." It was clear that he was chill about the whole thing. But at the same time, aunt Aileen is not the type to pressure him beforehand. He will be in trouble if he fails, but she wont get involved before the exams. Lucky him.
So here I was, sitting at a table in the library, several Transfiguration books in front of me. Three books open to certain pages, my notes serving as bookmarks in the related pages, tests from the school year. Under my Transfiguration handbook was peeking my mother's last letter. Lady Arachne was "walking" between the ink pots, books, and parchment. I was reading and taking more notes about the Tail-Growing hex. I could hear other students come and go around me but, too focused on my reading, I did not care of who was walking around. From time to time, I looked through the window to see Peter and his friends reading - studying maybe? - in the parc. If the sun wasn't so present, I would probably have done the same. But I didn't want my skin to burn, so I stayed inside.

Exam time only made Della rely on her regular refrain of going to the library even more. Today was no different, but many non-library-regulars filled the countless tables between the stacks in June. It was a bit aggravating to struggle to find a seat. She spied an open seat next to a girl in her year. She was fairly certain they had never spoken, but she knew Ravenclaw's name was Anastasia. She seemed too focused on her studies to notice when Della sat down across from her.

The Gryffindor removed her large stack of books from her bag. She was procrastinating on her History of Magic essay, and she always struggled with Transfiguration. She took a quick glance at her tablemate's notes. Tail-Growing hex, too, huh? Della knew of Anastasia's academic prowess, but being a Ravenclaw probably meant something, and she hoped sitting here would let some of the other girl's smarts rub off on her.

As she arranged her quills and pieces of parchment, something out of the corner of her eye moved across the table and made her jump. Oh! There was a spider on the table. Della hoped it was Anastasia's pet, not some intruder she hadn't realized was there. It seemed harmless, though. Della's pet snake, Greta, was curled up in the bottom of the front pocket of her bag (she provided moral support during the stressful exam crunch time), so she had no room to talk when it came to gruesome-looking pets.

Looking at the stack of books she had pulled out of her bag, she noticed she still was carrying an ancient-looking tome on the history of wizards and serpents. That wasn't for her history essay—she quickly sat back in her bag next to her sketchbook. She needed to focus on schoolwork today, not extra-curricular research.

Someone sat in front of me as I was completing my transfiguration notes. Lifting my gaze to see who it was, I saw Della Barfield, a Gryffindor, third year like me. I went back to my notes: as long as she didn't bother me, she could stay here. The sun was shining bright and hot, rays streaming through the large windows of the library, making the inside temperature rise. It was not unbearable, but I wish I remembered bringing my fan. A little glance through the window told me that my cousin was still outside, now laughing at something. How could he be so unbothered about his NEWTs coming in a few days?
I went through my Tail-Growing hex notes and, deciding I had enough information about it, closed my Transfiguration manual and put it back into my bag. The other thing I wanted more information about was the Memory Potion. I needed more books for that. So I looked back up to the girl in front of me and asked "uh... Barfield? Could you just make sure no one touches my stuff while I go get more books? Thank you." Without really waiting for an answer, I got up, picked up the Transfiguration books I took when I first arrived, and put them back to their places before looking for books about Potion History.
Coming back with three new books, I sat back down, and opened the books at the correspondent pages. My spider was now resting on the table, enough in the middle to not bother Barfield or myself. I took a new piece of parchment, titled it "Memory Potion, how and why" and first wrote the recipe before reading the books.

Anastasia asked if Della could watch her things as she went off into the stacks. She didn't wait for Della to answer and was already gone when the Gryffindor was able to process what she said. Sure, yeah, I guess. But Della figured the pet spider would do more for Ravenclaw than she could.

Della opened her own notes on the Tail-Growing Hex. She sheepishly glanced back at Anastasia's—the other girl's notes were much neater than Della's hasty scrawls. Especially when it came to transfiguration. Did she struggle so much with the subject because it was a deeper form of magic? Magical theory was usually taught in transfiguration, too, so it's not like Della understood that much either. She was quick and effective with her charms and defensive spells. She had no problem brewing potions. She was worried that something was wrong with her muggleborn nature and that she was missing something essential to be a complete witch.

She shook her head. It was silly to be this anxious—she had great grades overall, and other students around her seemed to be failing up each year. But she did contemplate taking a closer peek at Anastasia's notes while she was gone.

Before she could actually decide to cheat or not, the Ravenclaw returned with her books. Della returned to her essay. Anastasia thankfully shut her transfiguration notes and moved on to another subject, removing the temptation from Della's sight. The Gryffindor girl sighed, opened her Transfiguration textbook, and began to study her notes in earnest.
