Departures Into The Unknown
"It's a new adventure." That's what her mother had said to her right before she had boarded the train to Hogwarts. The words spun through Cassandra's head as she dragged her old trunk through the train carriages, keeping an eye out for an empty compartment. She had honestly almost thought she'd never get on between the constant hugs from her sisters and the worrying and adjusting of her coat from her parents. She knew they had meant well and that they were excited for her but the nerves that had ran through the Hartwin household from the past week had left Cassandra in a somewhat stressed mood. It wasn't that she didn't understand the stress of course, she knew exactly why her family had been somewhat stressed. Afterall, she was the youngest of three and the only one to show any sign of magic besides her mother so of course the idea of sending an 11-year old off to a new school was stressful to her poor father and sisters. Her mother had tried her best to explain to them that everything would be fine, after all, she had gone to the school herself and she had turned out quite well.
Date: September 1st, 2024 Word Count: 587
She sighed and continued on through the train, there was no point in dwelling on what had happened. After all, she was on the train now and there wasn't exactly much she could do about it. Of course, the train hadn't left the station yet so she could technically still get off but the idea of dragging her trunk all the way back seemed far worse than just staying on. She looked down at the trunk in her hands, green and silver with small wave like engravings carved into it. It had belonged to her mother who had also taken it to Hogwarts many moons ago. She remembered how excited her mother had been when her letter from Hogwarts had arrived and how excited she had been to take her to Diagon Alley for supplies. No she couldn't leave now, if not for her own sake then for her mother.
Determined now, she continued on until she eventually found an empty compartment and with one last heave managed to get her trunk in. She placed her trunk down and sat close to the window, looking out towards the platform that they would soon be leaving behind. Families saying goodbye to their children both young and old, teary goodbyes and excited smiles. She would see a few older kids who she could only assume were also students greet each other excitedly, possibly friends that had known each other in previous years. She couldn't help but wonder if she would meet people that she could possibly consider friends, after all making friends had never exactly been her strong suit.
She looked out to the empty compartment she was sitting in. Perhaps this wasn't exactly a good starting point if she wanted to make friends. She supposed she could have joined one of the compartments that had contained more people, but the idea of accidently intruding felt far worse that just staying in a compartment by herself the whole trip. She sat up straighter and fixed her messy, red hair slightly as well as her coat. Just in case someone did decide to sit with her she'd much rather look at least some what put together than a complete mess. Until then though, she would simply enjoy looking out the window and watch the people out on the platform.

Departures Into The Unknown
After many tight hugs, heartfelt goodbyes and promises of sending owls, Sabrina herself boarded on the train, her big leather trunk in her hands. Right as she entered the small aisle, she realised that she was walking in the exact opposite direction as all of the other students. The big leather trunk made it difficult to navigate through the narrow space. That didn't bother Sabrina tho. She was too excited to be bothered by anything, really.
In attempt to dodge a particulary big group of sixth years she entered the nearest compartment. There, by the window, sat a young redhead, probably around her own age. Sabrina smiled.
"Hi! Can I sit here?" She gestured to the free seat opposite to the mystery girl.
"I am-" she started to introduce herself, not getting to finish as a loud choo choo from the train interupted her "- Oh merlin! We're departing already!"
She gasped, quickly turning her trunk on its side before pushing it under the window. Using it as a steping stool, she pulled the window down, opening it. Turning to the girl again, she reached out her hand in an offer to join her on the suitcase.
"Come on up! Can you see your parents? There are mine!" She beamed, pointing out a couple standing down on the platform.
"Bye mom! Bye dad! See you on Christmas!" She waved, leaning out of the open window, standing on her toes.
The man laughed, waving back. The shorter woman that held his arm, however, pouted her lips in a disapproving manner.
"Sabrina! Be careful, you'll fall out!"
"You're only allowed to do so once you're at Hogwarts, when you're not our responsibility anymore!"
Sabrina's father joked, earning a jab to his ribs from his wife, who was surpresing a smile of her own.
Sabrina chuckled, but retrieved further into the compartment, to please her mom. She kept on waving until they were out of sight. Sighing, she folded her arms on the open window, turning to face her new companion with a toothy smile, her hair swishing around her face. She offered the girl her hand again, this time for a handshake.
"I am Sabrina, Sabrina Lyons, Brie for short. What's your name?"

Departures Into The Unknown
Cassandra had been off in her own little world looking out the window at the crowds when the door to the compartment opened and a young feminine voice rang out asking if she could sit in with her. She turned her head to see a young girl, who Cassandra figured was probably a first year, with light brown wavy hair and lovely grey eyes.Word Count: 378
She went to answer but before she could the train whistle blew and the girl had rushed to to the window with her trunk, turning it on its side and standing on it. She wasn't exactly sure how to feel as she watched this random girl start standing on her trunk and pulling the window down. The mysterious girl offered a hand to Cassandra before turning back and pointing out a couple who she presumed to be the girls parents.
It's possible Cassandra would have joined her on top of the trunk but she felt like falling out of a window would not particularly be a good start to a new school year, plus, she had promised her parents that she would be careful and standing on top of a not so stable trunk didn't seem particularly careful.
She listened to the mystery girl's parents and watched as the three exchanged a few waves before wearily watching as the girl eventually tucked back into the compartment, luckily just as she felt the train start to move. The mysterious girl eventually turned her attention back towards Cassandra, lucky her, and introduced herself as Sabrina, hand sticking out towards her direction.
Cassandra looked at the girl for a few seconds, thinking about how she managed to find herself in this situation when she quickly snapped back to reality. She didn't want to come across as rude so she slowly took the girl's hand in her own cold and pale hand and gently shook it as she spoke, "I'm Cassandra Hartwin, it's nice to make your acquaintance." She slowly pulled her hand back into her lap and did her best to give a soft smile in return to the rather toothy grin of the girl in front of her. She had never exactly been good at social interactions but she thought she was doing ok thus far.

Smiling, Sabrina nodded, repeating the name in her mind. Cassandra. It was a lovely name indeed. The matter of how the girl - Cassandra - introduced herself, seemed rather strange to her. Of course, having no filter, she didn't really hesitate to comment on it.
"That is such a strange thing to say!" She laughted, finding it more funny and endearing than anything else.
She looked out the open window, exhaling the fresh air for the last time before shutting it close again.
Hopping down from her trunk, she lifted it with ease, setting it up on the holders above the seats. Her mum put some light weightening spell on it for her, said it should wear off in a few hours. She plopped down on the seat opposite to Cassandra, kicking off her shoes and sliding them under the seat before folding her legs beneath her.
She looked up at her new companion, head cocked to aside, somehow resembling a bird. She didn't have any wizard friends. Actually, the only wizards she knew - beside her family - were her parents friends, and because they had Sabrina fairly early, their kids tended to be much younger. She had a few muggle friends from school, of course, but it was different with them.
She could never truly be honest with them. It felt as if she couldn't truly confide in them, which often bothered her. It made the friendships feel surface-leveled, not truly real. That was why she looked so forward to going to Hogwarts. There was just something immensely comforting about being amongst people that fully understood her world.
"Your truck's super cool" she stated, nodding to said object "Was one of your parents a Slytherin? My mom is a Hufflepuff and dad a Ravenclaw - I honestly have no idea where I'll end up. My grandparents from moms side are both muggle. I actually went to muggle school. It was nice, but I am so excited about going to Hogwarts! I just can't wait to learn all the new things - especially potions, they're just so interesting."
She rambled on, gesturing animatidly while spilling her whole lifestory to the girl opposite her.
"What about you?" Sabrina asked eagerly, leaning a little forward, hands settled on her feet. Her hair was a little ruffled from the wind, eyes showing her curiosity and enthusiasm.

Departures Into The Unknown
Strange thing to say? Cassandra hadn't particularly thought she said anything odd, maybe a little overly proper but not particularly strange. Watching the girl adjust herself and finally sitting down the thought continued to run through her head. Well... maybe it had been a bit strange, her sisters had always made small comments towards her that she never quite spoke the way others her age did, comments that would always end up in their mother scolding the two of them for teasing their sister.Word Count: 457
Her trip down memory lane was abruptly stopped however as Sabrina started talking again. Cassandra was slightly worried the girl had stopped breathing with as quick as she seemed to speak and go into different subjects but by the end, she was pretty sure she had understood the majority of what Sabrina had said.
She felt herself sink slightly back into the seat as the girl's eyes and words focused on her but she took a small breath before she answered. She figured it would be far ruder and significantly more awkward if she didn't try to say anything at all.
"Well..." she started, pausing for a moment to gather her thoughts before continuing, "You were right about one of my parents being in Slytherin, my mom is a Slytherin same as everyone on her side of the family... I think. I don't think I'm really a good fit for it though." Her eyes drifted towards her trunk once again, she had never been particularly close to her mother's side of the family but from what little information she had picked up from her mother that was a key factor that they had all been in Slytherin.
Her gaze returned to Sabrina, "My father is a muggle though, no magic from his side at all or from what we know at least so I went to a muggle school as well." The word muggle still felt so strange to Cassandra. She had never had to use the word really, in fact the only reason she had any clue about it was because her mother had tried her best to educate her on at least a few terms before sending her off to Hogwarts but Cassandra hadn't exactly really needed to use the word until now.
"I don't know if I have a particular class I'm excited for but I uh... do think they all sound very interesting," she added, admittedly she recently hadn't exactly been thinking about the classes she would be taking with everything else going on. She had gotten the basic rundown of all the classes and they had all sounded quite interesting but she figured she'd have more time to think about them once she actually got to the school.

Departures Into The Unknown
Sabrina nodded again, leaning back into her seat, making herself comfortable. The matter in wich the girl expressed herself was quiete strange, indeed. It somewhat reminded Sabrina of the way old people spoke, like her grandparents. The well prepared, polite sentences. Diplomatic, in a way. It was very different from Sabrinas own erractic and overly animated speech, and yet she found it honestly endearing, calming. Even admirible, in a way.
What a curious girl she thought, smiling to herself.
Her brows perked up at the mention of muggle school, her everpresent smile still in place.
"No way, thats awesome! What were your favorite subjects? Mine was definitely chemistry. I was honestly a little disapointed when I found out that we won't be continuing it."
She sighed, propting one elbow on the window ledge, leaning her cheek against her palm.
"I guess that's a price we gotta pay for entering the wizarding world. Leaving the muggle one behind, I mean."
She mumbled, looking out of the window, the buildings growing smaller and further apart as they got further away from the centre on London. Her gaze traced over the smuged scenary, not really focusing on anything specific, lost in thoughts. Sometimes, it felt strange. The muggle and wizarding worlds were so different, yet so similiar. Not really depending on each other, but also connected in many ways. And yet, it was still there. The seperation.
Her mom said that its changing. That the gap is closing. That kids like Sabrina, from both backgrounds, are the bridges between the two lands. But often, Sabrina felt like she was stuck on the bridge itself. Not really fitting in on either side. Yes, she looked forward to Hogwarts because she'd be amongst her people but there was still this small lingering fear that... they weren't really her people at all. That she'd arrive only to find that she didn't really fit in even there.
She blinked a few times, shooing the thoughts away. Those were silly fears, she knew. No need to mull over them. She met Cassandras eyes again, focusing on the red-head instead.
"You said you don't think you'd be a good fit for Slytherin, why is that?"

Departures Into The Unknown
Cassandra thought back to her days at school, she couldn't exactly think of any remarkable memories. She had never particularly disliked school, mostly because she had always done well in all her classes but she had to admit things would get a little lonely. "Well, I guess I always liked art which I don't think is a class we'll get which is sad I suppose," she told Sabrina, trying to think about what classes her mother had told her about. "As for your chemistry class, potions is technically chemistry I would think, just more magical chemistry." After all, chemistry and potions both required the tasks of mixing things together and trying to avoid blowing anything up.Word Count: 537
She watched the gray-eyed girl as she talked, she couldn't help but feel the girl almost looked sad when she talked about leaving the muggle world behind for this new one neither of them seemingly was very close to. She had never really thought of going to Hogwarts as leaving her old life behind, after all she would go back during the summer.
"I don't think we really have to completely leave the muggle world behind, after all, going off to Hogwarts doesn't change are families and we will go back once the school year ends. The muggle world is just as much apart of us as the wizarding world is," she said quietly, staring out the window at the rolling scenery that passed them by. Perhaps things would be different, in fact things were very much going to be different but not everything had to change.
Cassandra turned her head back towards the Sabrina as her mismatched eyes met the young girl's soft gray eyes as the other started to speak. She had almost forgotten that she had said those words, perhaps she had said them with out particularly thinking. She was quiet for a few seconds, looing down at her hands, trying to think about how she would answer before looking back up to meet the girl's eyes.
"Well... the traits that I have been told about that fit the house is that a person should be cunning, ambitious, determined, and strong leaders," her eyes returned to the silver and green trunk again. "I... I don't think I'm really any of those things so I wouldn't be a good fit," her words were quiet, and while her words had never particularly sounded confident they especially didn't sound confident now.
Her mother had always fit those traits, and despite looking similar, Cassandra and her mother were two very different people. Their stubbornness though had always been a similar trait, a trait her father would often tease the two about. It wasn't just that the didn't share the traits however but that she couldn't help but feel her mother wished for her to be in another house. Perhaps so she could finally separate herself from the rest of the family, after all if Cassandra ended up in any other house then that would be definite proof that she was different from the Sterling's.
Clearing her head though, she returned her attention to Sabrina, "How about you? Is there a house you think would fit you or just really wouldn't fit you?"

Sabrina nodded, her cheek brushing against the heel of her palm.
"Oh, art? Thats awesome! I always admired artists. And yeah, Potions are somewhat similiar to Chemistry - guess I have a type in subjects, huh?"
She laughted. Its true that she'll miss chemistry, but to be completaly honest, she'd pick Potions over it any time. There was just something so incredible about picking out the ingrediences, the slow but rewarding brewing process, how every little deviation made the biggest of changes to the results... it couldn't be matched by anything she's done - at least school related - before.
The process was usually long, and the majority of it was filled with either repetative actions like chopping and stirring or just simply waiting. You needed a lot of patience for it, a trait many didn't assosiate with Sabrina at first, as she tended to be bright and energetic. But the opposite was the truth. Sabrina actually enjoyed the quiet moments, when the time seemed to slow and everything wenf quiet.
When Cassandra said that the muggle and wizarding worlds were both part of them, she just hummed, nodding, eyes darting to aside.
Yeah, she thought, not regarding herself with that thought for long, tho.
Instead, she focused on what Cassandra was saying. She raised her brows as she mentioned the Slytherin traits and how she didn't fit them. Wich was completaly alright but the way she said it - as if it was a bad thing - was strange to Sabrina. She didn't have time to comment on it tho as Cassandra spilled the pause with her own set of questions.
"Oh, well, as I said, I have no idea where the hat'll put me. Like - I don't think I fully fit the description of any house, but hey, who does?
But I don't really worry about it! I am sure wherever I end up, it'll be the right place for me"
She smiled again, that toothy bright smile of hers, shrugging. Then she remembered something, her mouth momenteraly shifting into an 'o' shape as she reached for her school bag.
"Mom packed me some cookies, butter, chocolate, coconut - want some?"
She asked, pulling out a red metal box with white floral ornaments on the lid.

She nodded slightly at Sabrina when she said she had a type in subjects. Cassandra think it was a bad thing though. Afterall, everyone had their interests and it was a good thing to know what you enjoyed.Word Count: 395
As for houses, Cassandra hadn't really though of what house would fit her the best so she hadn't exactly been sure why she had asked the question to Sabrina. It's probably because she just wanted to get the topic away from herself and Sabrina seemed to actually enjoy talking or, at the very least, wasn't adverse to it and Sabrina had asked her a number questions so she figured it was only fair to ask one back.
When it came to what house she would end up in she had only really thought about the ones she probably didn't fit into. Which only really left two houses although, like Sabrina had said, she really had no idea where the sorting hat would place her. She certainly hoped wherever she ended up would be the right place for her but it would still be some time before she knew for sure.
She watched the girl in front of her smile with that same smile that seemed to light up the room and curiously watched as she dug through her bag to pull out a small red box with floral decorations.
It was quite a pretty little box and she was almost too busy studying the little box to hear what the girl had said. Luckily she hadn't been to deep in thought and caught on to the words.
Cassandra wasn't exactly one to take food from people she had just met but Sabrina didn't seem like a bad person and she highly doubted the cookies would poison her or anything, although there was always a small chance she supposed. But a cookie did sound good, and Cassandra had always had a bit of a sweet tooth, even if she would never really admit it.
Going back and forth on it she eventually gave up and decided that she might as well have one. Afterall, wouldn't it be more rude if she declined? She didn't really think it would come across as rude but she wanted to try and justify having something sweet. "Sure, I'll have one," she told the gray eyed girl, quickly adding, "Thank you for offering."

Departures Into The Unknown
Katerina clung to her mother's hand for dear life as they were jostled along the train platform, the large red train that would take her on to an entirely different world gleaming in the pale morning sun. She couldn't believe it was finally time, that she was here at all. Kat had always thought herself just to be an ordinary girl, with a good, ordinary life. She still believed that, really. Her eyes were wide as she took in everything around her, the giggling children and owls in cages and pointed wizard's caps. What she was really looking for was someone to pop out from behind one of the columns and tease her for believing this could all be real, and that she was about to be a part of it.
"Are you alright, dear?" Her father asked from behind them, giving her a small smile. "It isn't too late to change your mind."
"I want to go." Kat insisted, as strongly as her little voice would allow her. Her father simply ruffled her hair in response before lifting her trunk onto one of the train entrances for her.
"Your turn, kiddo." Kat turned her wide eyes to her mother, whose gentle smile calmed her. She enveloped her in a hug, warm and familiar.
"We'll be here, my love, right where you've left us." Katerina hugged her mother tightly, accepted a kiss on the top of her head from her father, and took a deep breath before clamoring onto the train. She could do this. She wanted to do this.
Waving good-bye to her parents, Kat turned and began tugging her trunk along behind her before she could convince herself to turn around. The thing was near as big as she was, so it didn't take long for her to get worn out. Most all of the compartments she passed, however, were full, and Kat had used all of the bravery she possessed to leave her parents on the platform. She most certainly wasn't going to ask a compartment full of older, more experienced students if she could sit with them.
Finally, she came across a compartment with only two girls in it, who must have been first years like her, if she had to guess. Sighing in relief, she tapped against the door of the compartment.
"Um, hi." She greeted, her voice a little breathless. She twirled a dark red wave nervously around her finger. "Mind if I join you?"
