A Quest For a Name
Time: 10:30
After chasing down a second year Hufflepuff and trading a prized Chocolate Frog card for a glimpse at his timetable, Avis stood on one of the moving staircases, impatiently tapping her foot waiting for the thing to connect to the next set of stairs. She remembered being completely awed and fascinated by the staircases only a few days ago on her first night but now, well, they moved a bit slower than she would have liked.
She ran through her plan of action again. The boy said that half of his class had Transfiguration at 10:00 on the fifth floor while the other half would head down the stairs for Potions. Avis had to make a choice between the two and following her first impulse as per usual, she began to make her way to the cold lower chasms of Hogwarts' basement.
She had to plan carefully as her Charms class was scheduled for 12:00 on the third floor, which was a ways up from the basement. The thought that she'd lazily made the choice of the basement because it was down the stairs rather than up popped into her head, but she shook it off. The older girl had to be here. She just had to.
As she reached the bottom of the steps leading towards Potions class, Avis realized she was in luck. The solid dark oak door, slightly worse for wear because of the moist air in the dungeons, contained a tiny barred window near the top. If she could just peer through that window somehow and spot the Hufflepuff she was looking for, Avis would feel more confident waiting for her outside the Potions door.
She crept forward, aware of the class going on inside, and steeling herself, she pressed her hands against the door and jumped straight up, getting only a tiny glance of the inside of the classroom.
She jumped a few more times but to no avail. She couldn't see inside for long enough to study who exactly was in there. With a frustrated sigh, she crossed her arms and leaned on the damp wall next to the door. Avis supposed she could just risk it and wait. The class should only be an hour and then she'd have to rush up the stairs to Charms at 12. As she wrapped her arms around herself against the chill of the dark dungeons, an airy voice floated out of the shadows and the girl jumped, this time non-voluntarily.
"And what is a first year doing all alone in the dungeons of our fair castle?" the voice said. Avis peered into the dark, trying to make out who could possibly be speaking to her and to her surprise, a small ghost floated out of the shadows, rubbing his transparent hands together mischievously.
Avis rolled her eyes. She did not have time for this.

A Quest For a Name
After half an hour of being sat down in Transfiguration, Jess still felt as if she was gasping from the trek up to the fifth floor. Even with a year of experience at the school, climbing the ever-moving stairs didn't seem to be getting any easier... or faster. Sure, she got an opportunity to admire the vast array of paintings on the walls, but the subjects didn't tend to like people staring for too long, so most of the time, Jess had her eyes fixed on her shoes as she marched her way to her destination. I really need to up my conditioning if I'm going to do well in Quidditch... what would my team say if I was this winded on the pitch?

Fortunately, while Hufflepuff had been let out surprisingly early, it seemed that their fellow Slytherins hadn't been so lucky, because she had finally succeeded in finding a seat that wasn't right under Professor Percival-Phelan's nose. It meant she could relax a bit, if only for a short while. Jess lazily gazed up to the board and jotted down what was written, just as a word caught her ear.
"The… Avifors Spell, professor?", someone had asked, and Jess immediately perked up. For a moment, I thought she was talking about Avis! Jess was surprised by how much she seemed to cross her thoughts. What was that he'd said, Swan, when he'd arrived late to class? That a Ravenclaw first year girl had given him a novelty Chocolate Frog to look at his timetable? It sounded like a farfetched excuse to Jess - what could a Ravenclaw first year girl want with the Second Year Hufflepuff timetable? But again, her thoughts drifted to Avis, and some small part of her questioned whether the story might in fact be true...
I wonder what lesson she has now? Can't imagine she enjoyed History of Magic too much... most people find it miserable! She was taken by a sense of sympathy for Avis, and amused herself at the thought of whoever's brilliant idea it had been to give History of Magic to the first years as their introduction to wizarding school. Jess rolled her eyes at the absurdity of the situation. I guess the Ravenclaws, of all houses, could probably handle it best?
At that moment, the professor reeled off a whole load of words ending with 'fors', and Jess felt she should probably listen more attentively. She readjusted her glasses, and set to work transcribing Professor Percival-Phelan's every word.

After arguing pointlessly with that useless piece of ectoplasm for a good 20 minutes, Avis had had to retreat up the stairs to the ground floor in order to escape. She was now waiting impatiently at the top of the basement stairwell and perked up when she heard the sound of voices floating up from the dungeons below.
As a group of second year Hufflepuffs passed her at the top of the stairs (a few mumbling grumpily about the annoying little ghost they'd encountered on their way up), Avis scanned the crowd carefully for short blonde hair paired with glasses but didn't see anyone matching the description. A few more straggling students made their way up the stairs but after two more minutes of waiting, no one else seemed to be coming up.
Avis sighed, a sinking feeling in her chest. The Hufflepuff girl must have had Transfiguration. She turned away from the stairs with a sad expression walking back up the corridor to make it to her Charms class on the third floor in an hour. She was so disappointed, in fact, that she didn't notice a girl with blonde short hair and glasses make her way past the Ravenclaw towards the Potions classroom in the dungeons. The only thing that made her look up was a sharp, loud laugh as the second group of Hufflepuffs passed by for their third class of the day. The laugh startled her and she glanced back indignantly searching for the source when she spotted the girl from earlier! Her blonde head was disappearing down the stairs towards Potions and Avis whirled around.
"Hey!" she shouted, gaining a few looks from students around her but she didn't care. She shoved her way through the crowded corridor and practically flew down the stairwell, tripping over disgruntled students on their way down. "Hey! Wait!" she cried, but the girl was already disappearing into the classroom, the door closing shut once again behind her and the rest of the second year Hufflepuffs. Avis groaned. She'd missed her once again! And this time she didn't have time to wait in front of the door. Her Charms class started as the girl's potion's class would end.
She sighed in frustration. What rotten luck!
