The First Available Compartment
Goodbye. Why was this so difficult? She had said goodbye to her parents when she went to Summer Camp. She left to the camp with no care in the world. Why was now different? Was it because camp was only for a month and going to school was for almost an entire year? Perhaps. Her parents did this, and her father's parents had gone to Hogwarts. Everyone seemed excited for Colby to go on her first academic adventure. Everyone except for Colby. She was nervous as hell. Was she going to show it? Probably not in public.
She had just run through the infamous brick wall and entered the nine and three-quarters platform. In front of her was a monstrous black train with red details. Smoke was puffing from the top and it was facing where her adventure awaits. Lugging her belongings with her, she entered the train from the first available open door. It was a bit of a line to get on the train. A conductor helped each person lift their luggage onto the train as there was a big step from the platform onto the vehicle. One after another, compartments were filling up. Some had three or four people, others had two. Colby decided that she would join a compartment that either had one or no one in them. As she pushed and shoved her way down the train corridor, she found a room that had only one person in it. She opened the door, and slid right in.
Using all her might, she lifted her luggage and placed it at the top where all personal belongings go. Once done, she sat down across from the person, taking a couple of big breaths. She looked out the window to see the industrial station that they will be leaving. Her mother told her that the greenery that the train drives by was always so beautiful. Colby was looking forward to seeing that. She took a last deep breath, putting her feelings behind her. She was not alone after all.
Her eyes looked at the random person that she sat with. He was... What was he? He had pointy ears and was small. He was not human, that was for sure. He looked like a very nice person, but it wasn't going to be Colby's impression to just be friends with someone who 'looked nice'. He seemed familiar, but she could not figure out why. Randomly, Colby secretly took a couple sniffs of the room. He at least smells good and not like body odor like some people may. That was a plus if she was going to spend hours in this compartment.
"Did you go to summer camp?" she asked, realizing that it would be the only reason why someone would be familiar. She was never with any of these students before today. "You just look familiar. You're also small. But I think you know that," she said, always stating the obvious with no filter. Did him being so small bother him or was he used to it? This was something he was probably born with. Colby wondered if she was born being a werewolf if she would be used to it rather than having her life change before her only a year ago.

Little Lemmy blew his nose and dabbed away the tears from his cheeks as he sat alone in one of the many compartments held within the Hogwarts Express. The high from earlier that day had him floating on a cloud as his family ushered him through the King's Cross Station. Even through the tears he chuckled at the sight of his grandfather and the silly outfit he had worn to hide his Goblin features. The Muggles stared at them as one would a freaky side show, buy Lemmy's adventurous spirit had loved every moment of it. That was until the boarding call went out and the realization that he was about to leave his family for months came crashing down upon him. However, with a deep breath and a few last sobs the sorrow began to slip away as the train began to fill with his future peers.
A few more dabs from his hanky would dry his face and the trembling lips from moments ago would give way to a smile many would know to come as a near constant from the boy. His long fingers would reach out an slide the door back open as Lemmy hoped to invite in some new friends. Many would pass and he shot a welcoming smile and a wave to every last one of them, but most move by without even noticing the little part-Goblin. It did little to diminish his spirit though as a squeak from his shoulder reminded him that he was never truly alone. "Might just be you and I, Craaka." He whispered to his beloved rat friend that he had purchased over the summer, which he had so affectionately given the Gobbledegook word for cheese as a name. "No worries though, friend. We are going to have so many adventures together at Hogwarts! And I hear there are loads of other pets for you to make pals with. So, let us plan out first...." Lemmy slid the compartment door back to close as he prepared to talk to himself for the duration of the ride, but much to his excitement the door would be pushed open as a young girl joined him.
"Hello!" The boy belted out to the newcomer. "My name is Lemmy, such a pleasure to meet you. Are you excited for the trip to Hogwarts! I sure am. I wonder what house we will be sorted into?" The words came fast as Lemmy let the last of his nerves go only to be replaced by giddy excitement. The fact that she did not speak right away did nothing to stop him from rambling on as picking up or caring about social cues was not Lemmy's strong suit. He simply just kicked his little legs that hung over the seat and excitedly awaited the other to out her stuff away and sit down. He was rather impressed that she could lift her luggage all by herself. Not because she was a girl, but rather his weak little arms could barely drag his trunk! His thoughts were quickly wandering, yet this newcomer would save the day by bringing his attention back.
"I did go to summer camp!" Lemmy's eyes went wide as he remembered all the good times he had over summer, but then they would shrink to a quint and he looked her over too. The sense of familiarity washed over him as well. "I do know that." He responded unfazed by her blunt remark about his appearance. His family had instilled quite the sense of pride in his part-Goblin nature. "Though I am quite large from a rat's perspective." A wink accompanied his long index finger as it pointed to the pet on his shoulder. He was way more proud of his quip than he should be considering it was not a witty as he would believe, but if anything he was a confident lad. "The ice rink!" Lemmy blurted out as the memory came back to him. He provided no further information that may have helped her remember as well before continuing on. "Apologies, but I'm not sure I remember your name. It was something really cool though! Goodness, we squandered such an opportunity to get to know each other. Tell me everything!" Lemmy finished with his elbows plopped onto his knees and face cradled by his rather large hands.

The First Available Compartment
Out of all the compartments that she had chosen and was available, it was one with not only a small boy, but a small boy who seemed to have a loud and outgoing persona. This was definitely going to be a long ride.
To Colby, her perspective of the boy was as if he was talking fast and extremely excited to see her, although they did not know each other. He seemed to be the kind of guy who just liked to interact with others. Colby, was quite the opposite. While she did have friends and also enjoyed making friendships, she was picky with them. She knew what worked with her, and at the moment... this guy was not checking any boxes.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," she said like she would to slow down a horse. "It's like people don't talk to you often," she said with no filter. Colby did catch that his name was Lemmy and that he was excited to go to Hogwarts. He then asked what house she thought she would be in. Colby never really thought about that. In all honesty, house preference was not pushed in her household, so it was hardly a thing she thought about. "I have no idea what house, but we'll see what the silly hat will say," she shrugged. "What about you?" she asked, wondering if he had a house preference.
It for sure "got better" when Lemmy introduced his rat that was on his shoulder. So not only a small person, but a small person with a rat. "Wait, so out of all the animals you can choose from, you chose a rat?" she then paused and thought about her tent mates this past summer. Nearly all of them had a fish. They could not even answer what they do with fish and how it makes good pets. "Nevermind, it's better than a fish. But still, it's a rat."
Lemmy confirmed that he was at summer camp this past summer and even, with time, remembered where they had met. It then hit Colby to know the exact incident. She was trying to ice skate using the wall and he had just cut her off and she fell on her butt. "Oh, right! You're the butthead who made me fall," she said pretending to sound angry, her eyebrows perked up. "I'm Colby," she said, switching off her pretend angry face and voice.
This guy was definitely... something. Not only did he like to chit chat, but he wanted to know everything about her. And he was excited about it. What was there to say? She obviously did not want to share her deepest and darkest secret. "Oh um... I'm a witch," she said, coming up wit the most basic of all information, "and I... um...," she paused and stared at him staring at her with so much brightness. "Do you do this with everyone? You're weirding me out."

Lemmy sat there with head cradled in hands as his eye were wide with excitement, but he popped up with scrunched eyebrows as this girl began to “whoa” him. He had of course received this treatment from others before as the boy was prone to rants and raves. However, this was a golden opportunity to get to know a fellow student. Who would want to take their foot off of the gas? There was only nine hours or so! No time to waste! Yet his grandmother’s voice drifted into his mind as he remembered her lessons. Not everyone was as talkative as he and some wanted space…balderdash! “What she doesn’t know can’t hurt her.” Lemmy whispered to himself as he now repeated a lesson from his grandfather with a devilish smile upon his face.
“In fact, people talk to me all the time.” He chuckled at his own response, thinking it way more funny and witty than it was before continuing on. “No idea, eh?” Lemmy was sure that she must have had at least one single thought about which house she would be sorted into for the next seven years of her life, but perhaps it really didn’t mean much to her. He finished his thought with a shrug. “Mother did say that the hat is a bit funny. Probably smells a bit too considering it’s older than dirt! She was a Ravenclaw actually and I do wonder if it’ll run in the family. I’m excited for any house though. Do you have any family that attended Hogwarts before you?” Again his eyes were wide and his smile impossibly big across his face.
Craaka, his pet rat, then scurried up to his shoulder and Lemmy’s face would shift to mock horror as he listened to her scrutinize his selection in pets. “Of course I choose this precious rat. Don’t listen, love.” He pretended to cover the rats little ears before again smiling. Rats weren’t for everyone. “I would agree with you though. Never quite understood the appeal of a fish. Not much personality there. Don’t live long either.” Lemmy flashed a quick frown before again shrugging away the thought. “No pets for you?” The question came with his usual resting smile.
The recognition would soon follow as they remembered the ice skating over the summer. It was clear she was pretending when she called him a butthead, but Lemmy played along. He shot her a face that could only say “girl…please”. With the back of his hand at the corner of his mouth he leaned in as if he was telling a secret. “Some might say you fell on your own accord? Hmm?” He waved it off with another chuckle before she properly introduced herself. “Colby!” Lemmy snapped his unusually long fingers as the name came back to memory. “Such a cool name. A pleasure to be reacquainted with you.” An over exaggerated spin of his hand and a slight bow of his head accompanied his remark.
Lemmy listened closely as Colby began to explain herself in detail. Though he would chuckle at the details. “Well, obviously.” He said in between laughs as she divulged that she was a witch. Yet his face slipped to scrutiny as she questioned his intentions. “Well of course not with everyone. My parents said I shouldn’t talk to strange adults. Especially the muggles! But we are probably the same age and we are going to the same school. We should make friends! You do like making friends don’t you?” Lemmy leaned in again, his gaze peering over his glasses with one raised eyebrow. This girl seemed a tough cookie. Challenge accepted…

Colby was left stunned. Was it her or was he speaking way too fast? It seemed that verbally slowing him down did not work. If only there was a magical way to slow someone's voice down from chattering so quickly. All she was able to do was to slowly nod her head and process his words.
"I doubt Ravenclaw for you," she blurted out, knowing it was a bit of an insult. "Both my parents went to Hogwarts. They were Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. I forgot which one was which though," she said, not caring too much. She remembered her father telling her that it did not matter what house he and her mom was in, it is based on the person itself, not the family.
"There is no appeal of a fish," she ranted on, remembering how her tent mates were so into their fish. "They eat their own poop," she said, sticking her tongue out in disgust. "They have no intelligence and are just boring," she finished. At least this was something they both agreed with, although even a rat isn't that exciting either.
Colby's eyebrows rose up and looked at Lemmy with disbelief. The fact that he thought she fell on her own accord was blasphemous. She did not fall unless she was cut off, which is what had happened. "You really want to go there?" she threatened him. How dare he say that it was her fault. Her eyebrows began to shift to look cross as he was quick to move on about her name.
The fact that this guy needed to be reminded to not talk to strangers seemed to be really on-point with how outgoing he was. Colby assumed that he would talk to a wall if given the chance. That was definitely a question to consider. Did Colby like making friends? She did, but she was picky about what friends to be friendly with. She did not want to be friends with just anyone. "No," she answered, playing around to see his reaction. How would he take an answer like that? "What if someone doesn't want to be friends with you?" she asked, wondering how he would take such a question like that.

"Really?" Lemmy questioned her doubt in the hat choosing Ravenclaw for him. The idea that some would find this insulting sailed far over his head. Though the house was known for the studious and wise she must have other reasons for doubting. Perhaps Colby thought the navy blue and silver wouldn't suit him well. He surely would get into trouble during study sessions and quiet reading time. Perhaps she was right he finished the thought with a shrug before blinking hard and returning his gaze to hers. "Oh. Hufflepuff does sound like a fun house. I could see myself there. Plus mother told me their common room is close to the kitchens." Lemmy concluded with a wag of his eyebrows like he had just given away a juicy secret.
He would go on to enthusiastically shake his head in the positive as they finally found a subject to agree on. Fish were weird and boring. Lemmy would snort with laughter when Colby called them poop eaters. "Gross." He stated simply after his fit of giggles. "I think a proper fish fry is the only thing about them that I would enjoy." The boy offered with yet another chuckle. If anything, he kept himself amused.
"Maybe I do!" Lemmy's little legs kicked back and forth as they hung over his seat. The speed of the oevment increasing when Colby challenged him. He was always a sucker for friendly banter and she seemed to have just the right personality for it. Some might be intimidated by it, but he thrived off of such people. Those with a little edge always proved more challenging to befriend and he loved wiggling his way through the tough exteriors. Though sometimes, just as she voiced now, it didn't always work out.
"If someone doesn't want to be my friend, then it's their loss." Lemmy waved his long index finger in a sassy gesture before offering another chuckle. "But I suppose that grandmother always told me that you can't win over everyone. Though I think I would like to try. Well...unless they are like totally bad people, you know. No dark wizards in my friend circle, thank you very much." He again spoke quickly as the thoughts rushed into his mind, but he at least kept himself from a full on tangent at this point. "What about you, Colby? You're telling me you really don't like making friends?" Lemmy flashed her a skeptical look. "Surely you have friends back home? Any of them coming to Hogwarts too?" HIs eyes were just as bright as his smile. Who could resist...
