Puck the Postal Dragon Preptober Prompts 2024

The Barbarian | Write about an incident that would anger your character. Why would this make them angry? How do they deal with that anger?

Puck was making his way back to his small apartment, paws tapping quietly along the ground. His work cap was still atop his head, and his empty bags were still strapped to his travel harness. He hummed quietly, trying to keep himself awake and preoccupied. He’d taken the path a coworker wasn’t able to do as he was out on parental leave, so Puck had worn himself thing that day and the last, running enough for two postal workers. In fact, he was so exhausted he couldn’t make himself turn into humanoid shift for his walk home. He knew a draconic form wasn’t quite accepted in city limits, unless one was working in it of course, so he was doing his best to keep to alleyways and off the main streets to avoid attracting attention. Something about his sharp teeth and long claws, as well as larger than the average city-goers size made people uneasy.

It was down this alley that he heard the yowling of an animal in distress. Before he could comprehend what he was doing, his paws were pulling him into a run, skidding around a corner until he could find the source of the noise. Upon first glance, he saw nothing but the slight dinginess and darkness of an unoccupied alleyway. Nothing out of the ordinary for the set of apartments and stores lining it, until his eyes landed on a figure trying stubbornly to shove something into one of the piles of trash waiting to be hauled away. It seemed to be a small crate, and it was the location of the yowling.

Puck drew closer, ears pulling back against his head as he tried to see what was happening in the dim light of twilight. He couldn’t ask in the common tongue what was happening unless he shifted, and that would take far too long. He paused, tail swaying behind him as he waited for the figure to do something, like open the crate to free the creature or bring the crate inside with him. Instead, the figure- an elf of some sort if the long ears Puck saw when they turned their head were any indication- gave the crate a final kick into the pile of trash, shaking their head and turning away to leave. The animal inside scratched at the side of the crate desperately, and Puck stepped forward without thinking, lips curling to bare sharp draconic teeth at the elf coming his way down the alley.

He couldn’t believe it, this person was just putting a living creature in the trash? He would not judge anyone for the food they ate or the pets they kept, but to leave something to either be saved by someone else or to die where they didn’t have to see it? Puck hadn’t seen anything like it out in the rural villages, and an angered growl slipped out of his throat. The elf finally caught sight of him, their night vision likely of similar quality, and froze. Puck may have been of the smallest of draconic species, but when faced with an average humanoid, he was easily taller than them and much bulkier.

“Oh, shit!” the elf exclaimed, scrambling back against the wall, falling away from Puck. They quickly turned, running towards the other end of the alley. Something animalistic in Puck urged him to follow, to chase the thing running away from him, but a pitiful noise from the crate had him snapping back to reality. Snuffling closer, Puck pulled the crate open, staring at the feline animal that lay curled inside.

The Bard | Write about a performance that occurs in your setting. Are performances common to see? Are the performers local to the area, or have they travelled to perform here?

Puck was hesitant to leave the surprisingly cozy tavern after having finished dropping off the pile of letters for the long term guests staying there. This stop was normally earlier in his route, so he was used to ducking in the back door into the kitchen while the tavern was still closed, dropping the letters on the table set aside for him, and ducking back out before his large draconic form could get in the way of the bustle of the cooks or helpers bringing in buckets of water for guests. This time it had been later in the evening, one of his last stops, and he’d decided to shift to humanoid form to go in through the front door and grab himself something to have for dinner later as he dropped off that day’s deliveries.

The tavern was still mostly empty, but while waiting for the modest meal of bread and meat for him to take home with him, he was entranced by the sounds of someone warming up and tuning an instrument. Sitting on a stool to watch, his tail curled in curiosity around the leg of the chair, leaning forward to listen as the goblinoid began to pluck out a slow tune on their lute and hum quietly. He hadn’t had time to stop into places and listen to music since he’d been in the city, stuck passing longingly by open doors before continuing on, so this quiet and mournful tune arrested him, freezing him still in his chair. It was as though the performer was playing for themselves, and no one else.

Puck was startled out of his focus as his parcel of food was placed next to him on the counter, and the musician finished up their song. Smiling sheepishly at the barkeep, who gave him a warm nod in turn, he stepped down from his stool, retrieving his delivery gear. He placed a single gold coin in the bowl set out in front of the musician, waving shyly and quickly exiting the tavern to shift and continue his route. Maybe when he was done, he could make some time to come back and listen to more music. Or make an effort to make it a regular habit.

Prompt 3:
The Cleric | Write about an institution in your setting. Is it well-liked and appreciated, or disliked by the general population?

Puck puffed quietly as he climbed the ramp to the Library. It wasn’t like the libraries he’d seen in the outer towns or smaller cities. No, this was a Library, one that deserved a capital ‘L’ in front of it. After all, it was the primary place of worship for the god of Wisdom for this City-State. Most other religions had more traditional places of worship, such as the quiet temples of Death, or the elaborate churches of Light. Wisdom, however, simply had places where his acolytes could gather all the knowledge of an area, and share it with the people of the land.

That was all fine and good, and Puck had enjoyed taking advantage of the free books on occasion when he was looking for something to do, but someone had to actually bring the knowledge being gathered. Sometimes that was acolytes or travelers bringing their own books, and sometimes it was huge shipments of delivery materials delivered between major cities in the bags of the massive feather dragons. More often than not, it was medium sized pallets piled high with crates that were dropped off at the postal office with the rest of the city’s deliveries.

Puck and the other workers that could pull carts would alternate who loaded up the crates into a laden cart and haul them up to the Library. This was of course the larger races; the centaurs, orcs, dragons, and the like. It was Puck’s turn, and sweat glistened on his furry sides as he dug his paws in and walked steadily up the steep ramp to the Library. The cart harness wasn’t uncomfortable, but it wasn’t exactly pleasant as it was simply adjusted from a standard horse harness to fit his leaner frame. All this walking and pulling and puffing for breath had Puck feeling less and less amiable towards the Library, but his frustration was easily overcome as he made it to the open double doors, and was passed by two satyrs chatting about their university courses, eagerly trotting into the Library in search of knowledge.

Re-energized, he eagerly trotted through the large doors, thankful for the accessible size of the entrance making it easy to drop off his delivery and continue on with his day.

Prompt 4:
The Druid | Write about an animal/from the perspective of an animal that passes through your setting. Is it local to this area?

The horse looked curiously at the creature next to her. It stood like a horse, on all fours and a similar height and build to herself, but it also seemed to communicate with the bipeds much easier than she did. Almost like it understood them in the strange vocal languages they used, rather than the much simpler communication of stomped hooves, pinned ears, or shifted weight. It couldn’t speak in the vocals of the bipeds, its mouth shaped like the annoying canines that nipped around her heels in the streets.

All the same, she felt a kinship with the strange creature. It made more sense than the ones that had a horse body like her and a biped attached to the top, almost like a biped riding a horse in a truly monstrous way. It wore the same harness that held the same bags, and frequently showed the same hesitation she did when things were unfamiliar in the bustling city. It seemed that both of them knew the open fields outside of the city better than the crowded cobbles of the streets, on the rare occasions when the horse’s rider would go to the outer towns and the creature would follow. Despite his strangeness, she appreciate the companionship of another animal out of place and doing the same work as her, even if he seemed to do it without the prompting of a rider.

Prompt 5:
The Fighter | Write about something/someone that needs defending. Does your character defend it/them? Why or why not?

Puck gasped for breath, struggling to stand up from the roadside ditch he found himself in. It seemed as though one moment he’d been running from the main city Coaxi to the nearest farm, and the next riders on horseback had been pulling him down to the ground. They’d quickly cut the packages from his harness, and hogtied him despite his snapping and snarling in desperation. They’d pushed him off the road into the irrigation ditch that thankfully had no water running through it, loaded up his mail into their own saddlebags, and quickly rode away further from the city.

He knew he should be thankful they’d left him unharmed; after all stealing mail was an offense against the City-State’s ArchDuke, but killing a delivery person was a national offense against the Emperors. On the one hand, Puck knew he should return to the city, report the theft, and let the office handle alerting the individuals that had lost their belongings. On the other, those bags had included the monthly care package the cafe owner sent to their family on the farm, always consisting of baked goods and money to help sustain them through the month. The office could replace the money if they’d insured it, but the joy the packages brought their family couldn’t be replaced.

Finally managing to cut through the rope with his teeth, Puck stumbled back up onto the road. They’d gotten the jump on him, but there was no way Puck was going to let those common criminals take that joy away from the families he helped with his deliveries. Maybe he should get some backup first though. After all, he was just one dragon who’d already been taken out by the thieves once. What was to stop them from doing it again, and hurting him this time? He just had to think of who could help him…

Prompt 6:
The Monk | Write about someone secluded in your setting. Why have they chosen a life of seclusion? Does the setting make it easy for them to live this life?

Rashan glided from one thundercloud to the other, rising and falling on the currents of the wind above and within the clouds. Ze was what the humanoid called a Thunder Dragon. While ze thought the description was simplistic, it was fairly apt, as zir kind spent most of the time gliding and soaring within the very same storm ze found zirself in now. It wasn’t uncommon for a thunder dragon to never touch the ground zir whole life, or to never communicate with another creature for years on end. Rashan didn’t mind it. There was no struggle for land, no struggle for survival fighting with others. Rather, ze simply claimed a thunder patch, and if another thunder dragon entered it the two may decide to share, or perform a dominance display that would have the smaller of the two dragons fleeing.

Rashan didn’t have any issues with their display, as ze had been alive long enough to bear three hatchlings, which were the only time a thunder dragon would land. They didn’t have arboreal legs like the other species of the land, rather three developed sets of wings, so it was dangerous to spend too much time on the ground. It was more dangerous to try to lay an egg traveling on the winds though, so sacrifices were made to pick a suitable patch until the egg hatched. Rashan didn’t mind the isolation, although ze did wonder what had become of zir young once they had departed zir care.

Prompt 7:
The Paladin | Write about a cause your character would fight for. Why is it so important to them?

Opix had its own fair share of issues, but the accessibility mandates in public or religious buildings was one of the continent’s better traits. Puck was among the many that had to use these facilities, and whom the accessibility affected on a daily basis. There were many aspects of it that had gone into the construction of cities themselves, such as the lack of stairs for wheelchair users or centaurs, and in cities near water the added canals along the roads for access for merfolk as well as ease of transport of items by small boats. The changes to buildings were also not commonly seen in private dwellings or small towns, as these could be adjusted for ease of use of the common occupants. These accessible aspects included the lack of stairs, a variety of sizes of furniture and amenities for the smallest of gnomes or ratfolk to the largest of orcs and trolls, and more.

Puck himself used the larger sized doors for the larger races while in draconic form, and was thankful he wouldn’t have to struggle with stairs, and while in humanoid form he took advantage of the smaller or average sized amenities. Smaller buildings with no accessible door meant he’d either have to leave deliveries outside, or turn to humanoid form to go inside of the building, messing up his harness and bags, and on occasion distressing the people inside as he had no clothes to wear while he was working in draconic form. His humanoid form wasn’t immodest by any means, but social standards were hard to shake when it came to public spaces that weren’t used to dragons.

Prompt 8:
The Ranger | Write about someone getting lost in your setting. What catches their attention, and why?

Lina wasn’t familiar with cities as large as Coaxi; after all, it was the capital city of the primary food production sector of the continent. All that to say, the streets were crowded with market stalls, there were carts hauling goods around every corner, and while street corners had signs on them declaring the name, it didn’t help her much when she didn’t know where to find the street she was looking for. It wasn’t as though she could ask for directions easily either, as the ratkin found herself being forced to stick to the edges of roadways and crowds, as she was only as tall as most folks knees, and they’d usher her out of the way so she wouldn’t get kicked or stepped on.

She was just looking for a particular store that sold maps of the area, so she could resume her travels outside of the city, researching the roadways that had been created over time on the continent.

“Ho there, you looking for something?” a voice called out, and she turned to see a large draconic figure with green fur and black cap on his head looking down at her. He had a strange harness set up on his body, heavily laden with goods, and he glistened with sweat in the hot burn air.

“Do you know where the map store is? I was hoping it was around here, but I seem to be lost,” Lina stammered out.

“Oh! Do you mean Ren’s Maps? It’s nearby. Here, go ahead and hop on, I’ll get you there faster. I’m Puck, by the way,” Puck explained, introducing himself as he knelt to allow the ratkin easier access to his back, where she could perch atop more packages.

“I’m Lina, thank you so much for the help!”

“Of course! It’s not trouble at all, I’m just happy to help.”

Prompt 9:
The Rogue | Write about something going missing. How does your character react? Was your character the victim? Was your character the culprit?

Puck was met with a surprising array of chaos as he stepped into the normally neatly kept clothing store. It wasn’t as though he was stopping by outside of open hours like he usually did when making deliveries, seeing as though he’d decided to come in on his day off to maybe expand his wardrobe beyond his postal uniform or his simple outer farm garb. The store displayed primarily the jewel and earth tones fit for a city that functioned mostly under Harvest or Earth, but it had always had a small variety reflecting other religions and regions that had interested Puck.

Now, the neatly arranged robes, scarves, hats, shirts, and trousers, were thrown into haphazard piles. Shelves were pushed out of the way, and as Puck stepped further in, he caught sight of the store owner, a dark skinned elf named Roya that was currently half underneath a table, rummaging desperately for something out of sight.

“Do you need any help?” Puck asked, leaning down to see what Roya may be looking for.

He jumped, quickly scrambling out from under the table and turning to look at Puck. “Oh, Puck. I didn’t know I have a delivery coming today. Or are you here to shop? I’m afraid I’m in no state to be selling things, I should’ve closed the store as soon as I’d realized my brooch was missing.”

“Your brooch? Would you like any help looking for it?” Puck asked, head tilting curiously. He didn’t think a simple piece of decorative jewelry would be so important.

Roya reached out to clasp Puck’s hands, sighing with relief and exclaiming, “Yes, that would be wonderful! It’s an heirloom from my family’s grandmatron, and I’ve been going mad looking for it. Will you search under the tables and along the ground? I have a few shelves I can check the tops of, before I report it as missing. It wouldn’t be the first time a pixie tried to steal it, but usually they just put it somewhere else as a prank instead of taking it.”

Puck nodded, and quickly set to work looking for the missing brooch.

Puck the Postal Dragon Preptober Prompts 2024
Prompt 10:
The Sorcerer | Write about your character discovering they have magic. What sort of magic is it? How will they use this magic?

Puck was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to his shifting. Most hatchlings from his hatching season had already learned how to shift their draconic bodies into humanoid bodies, by the time they were what humans would consider toddlers. A young Puck simply hadn’t tried to shift, and his carers couldn’t figure out why. The young dragon had always been a bit different from the rest, prone to sitting and staring at the plants and flowers around him, rather than running and playing in them. When offered more humanoid toys like blocks and toy horses, the other hatchlings would stack them, either with human hands or draconic teeth, or pretend the horses ran and played like real horses in the fields, or chew on the wooden toys to fulfill their teething instincts.
Puck would usually put them into strange piles that the carers couldn’t find rhyme or reason for. Sometimes he’d line them up based on size, sometimes he’d simply lay the horses down on their sides and sit and watch them with big curious eyes. The final catalyst for his shift was when the other hatchlings kept trying to rearrange his toys, and they weren’t listening to his body language, as they were all learning to respond to the words only humanoid mouths could make at that point. Puck has shifted into a small child, simply to take back his toys with more dexterous hands and yell vague noises at anyone that tried to take them.
