Every Line Connecting the Stars
Date : October 23rd, 2024 Color code : Written|Thought|Said Okay, this one is done. Sere put away the Transfiguration homework she had just finished. Now... Let's go back to Astronomy. Where were we? The Gryffindor girl opened her Astronomy textbook marked with sticky notes and began to briefly review what she had learned earlier.
Yes, Sere Nade was in the Study Room. This is not her favorite place, but one of the places she visited the most in Hogwarts because of her obligations. Recently she has too many things to do. Homework was piling up and exams would soon come one by one. Likewise today, after lunch the British-Korean girl immediately stepped up to the second floor of the castle and entered the Study Room, picked a random empty table and buried herself among the pile of parchments and textbooks.
"Oh my God... Why is this so hard..." Sere hissed while cracking her neck left and right, then massaging it. She has been struggling with Astronomy for several days. This subject had become increasingly difficult for her in this second year. Sere didn't hate Astronomy. The lessons were so fun, the spells taught were so unique, and she loved the stories about the sky, the galaxy, and the stars; but she was fully aware that her ability in memorizing was very weak. "I mean, all these constellations look the same to me! Oh, C'mon!" The girl seemed to point at the pictures of the combination of lines and sparkling dots showed in the textbook as if she was scolding it, "Is there any way for me to remember you guys easily?" Right, she was just talking to the book rather than scolding it.
Sere bent over, tapping her forehead on the textbook, hoping that the constellations pictures would enter her brain without her having to memorize it.Mentioning : @Jess McLeod

Jess walked slowly through the study room in search of a place to work, groaning slightly. The gammon, egg and chips available at the lunch table had just been too enticing, and then there was apple crumble with custard, which she obviously couldn't have ignored! So now here Jess was, her bloated stomach almost bulging out of her skirt under her robes.
After some pained searching, she finally spotted a desk that was only occupied by one other girl, who she recognised as Sere, one of the Gryffindors in her year. Sere was bent over her work, and looked just as uncomfortable as Jess, although she wondered whether Sere's discomfort might have been for a different reason...
Once Jess had placed her satchel on the ground next to the table, she sat down and took out her History of Magic homework. A boring old essay about Ancient Runes, a subject Jess was sure she would not be taking for OWLs. She opened her textbook, and began to scribble down potential points for the essay. Runes date back to 8000 BC...
At that moment, Jess couldn't help but notice the continued look of anguish on Sere's face as she stared down at her... Jess peered over to see that it was the constellations in her Astronomy textbook that was causing Sere so much suffering. Jess was surprised - I know that some people find Astronomy hard, but the constellations are just wrote learning! They shouldn't be too bad. She often found it difficult to relate to people about the difficulty of the subject, because her dad had taught her so much about it at a young age, to the extent that she didn't even remember learning half of it - she supposed that her younger self had absorbed it by osmosis.
In a moment of empathy, Jess decided to offer her help to Sere. Aware that she shouldn't disrupt everyone who was working, she whispered in Sere's direction, "Need any help?"

Date : October 23rd, 2024 Color code : Written|Thought|Said "Eh?" Sere straightened her back when he heard a girl's voice from beside her, "Uh, oh, sorry. Am I disturbing you?" Sere didn't even notice the presence of the girl in her Hufflepuff robes; with an opened textbook, parchment and quill in front of her. When did she come? Since when has she been here? Am I that noisy?
The Gryffindor girl then opened her mouth to introduce herself, "Hi, I'm Sere Nade, second year of Gryffindor. Just call me Sere." She tried to remember whether she had met the light-blue eyed girl but it seemed like she hadn't, "And you?" A question that Sere intended for the girl to introduce herself.
"You were... offering a help?" Sere was interested in how good the blonde girl beside her was at Astronomy. It would help her so much if the girl had some input she could give her regarding this subject. "I don't know how to differentiate all these constellations. Do I really have to memorize all of them? I'm not that good in memorizing things." Sere then asked a more fundamental question, "Why did the scientists named every line connecting the stars?" The Gryffindor girl scratched the back of her neck, "What was the use of constellations for those people back then? And for us to memorize in the present day?"
Sere looked at the textbook in front of the Hufflepuff girl, "Umm... Do you really have some free time to help me? If you're busy, I'll try to study something else first and then come back to Astronomy when you have finished your..." Sere pointed her gaze to the Hufflepuff girl's essay, "...things."Interacting with : @Jess McLeod

"Eh?", Sere mumbled, straightening up and looking at Jess, "Uh, oh, sorry. Am I disturbing you?" Jess opened her mouth to respond, when Sere continued, "Hi, I'm Sere Nade, second year of Gryffindor. Just call me Sere. And you?"
Typical Gryffindor, Jess thought to herself, amused. Never let you get a word in. "I'm Jess, and, well, I know who you are," she responded, sheepishly, "We're in the same year - I think we actually have a couple of lessons together..." Jess blushed - she hadn't meant for this to become a blame game.
"You were... offering to help?", Sere asked, changing the subject, although Jess couldn't tell if it had been intentional or not.
"Oh, yes!", Jess responded, grateful to have moved on, "I just... noticed that you looked a bit... pained. Is it because of your Astronomy work?"
"I don't know how to differentiate all these constellations", Sere reeled. It didn't take much guessing to figure out that Jess had hit the nail on the head. "Do I really have to memorise all of them? I'm not that good at memorising things."
Jess felt guilty, coming from her extremely privileged position of never having had to consciously learn any of it, but she decided she could probably still be of use. "The honest answer is... yes. I'm lucky - my dad's obsessed with astronomy, so I learnt everything before I could barely walk. But maybe I can help you with the learning process? I know how annoying it can be!"
"Why did the scientists name every line connecting the stars?". Jess wanted to laugh - it's a fair question, but definitely one coming from an exasperated student rather than an enthusiastic astronomer. "It comes down to the same reason we name anything - what happens when you want to refer to that line and you can't just point at it? Better to use a name, so everyone knows what you're talking about."
"What was the use of constellations for those people back then? And for us to memorize in the present day?"
"You know what?" Jess leaned in, confiding, "I have absolutely no idea. Maybe it makes the process a little faster, but it's one of those things you learn at school and never have to use again, I reckon."
Sere looked down at Jess' History of Magic textbook, and commented, "Umm... Do you really have some free time to help me? If you're busy, I'll try to study something else first and then come back to Astronomy when you have finished your...things."
"Oh, yeah, it's completely fine!", Jess said overconfidently, flipping the book closed, "I have plenty of time to get on with that essay" and I absolutely do not want to be doing it right now... "So, tell me," Jess continued, using the now-closed book as a surface for her elbow, and resting her hand under her chin, "what exactly is it you're struggling with?" Jess was more than glad to get away from her work, and for the first time in a while, she might actually be able to help someone else out!

Date : October 23rd, 2024 Color code : Written|Thought|Said "Ah! Right," Sere might be getting a bit too philosophical by asking for unnecessary details. Of course everybody named the things they found, to make it called easier, plus to legitimize that it was them who found it. As Jess closed her book, Sere straightened up her back with more enthusiasm. It was nice to know that someone was helping her and giving her full attention in the midst of her crowded head. Plus the fact that this girl already knew her. Sere really had to find out what class they were in together since she had been too focused on herself and her textbooks to even notice Jess' presence in the class.
"Thank you for your good will. Here," Sere slide her textbook and pointed at the pictures of the zodiac constellations, "How did your father explain all of this things to you? And did you memorize them all? Or... You'd rather look for the similarities between their shapes and their names? Or maybe any other way?" The Gryffindor girl seemed to think, "Let's say my zodiac sign is.. Umm... I was born on November 11. That means I'm... Umm?" The girl searched for the answer to her hanging statement in the textbook, "I think I wrote it down somewhere here earlier." Sere searched through her parchments.
"Libra?" Sere sighed. Giving up. Couldn't find the answer anywhere. "Maybe I'm a Libra?" That was the only zodiac sign that immediately came to Sere's mind. The fact that her sign was actually Scorpio had completely lost somewhere around her head. "Did you memorize the constellation for Libra because it's shaped like a scale? Or you actually learned how could it ended up shaped like a scale?"
An interesting thought then occurred to Sere, "What about you? What's your zodiac sign?" Maybe she could learn about zodiac by associating certain people with the twelve signs.
Flipping through the pages of her textbook repeatedly while skimming, Sere realized that her zodiac sign wasn't Liba. "Ah, so I'm a Scorpio, not a Libra." she said. She also realized that this textbook provided a complete guide to each constellation. Her homework was clearly to memorize everything, and Jess clearly had an advantage in this kind of thing because she was used to it. Maybe Sere should visit Astronomy class more often beside the class schedule to get used to it like Jess.
For now, there was nothing else she could do but forced it all into her brain. Huh, tiring.Interacting with : @Jess McLeodReducioI write the last two paragraphs in case this thread won't be opened again, but if you want to do so, just shoot me an owl and I'll edit this post.
