These semi-annual balls that Hogwarts constantly decided to put on felt far more trouble than they were worth to Ulysses Drake. The last one seemed to have devolved into some absolute mental terror with stabbing and the strangest encounter with Astra, Rebecca Lark, and a handful of other students who seemed like they were trying to set a trap that Uly simply wasn't going to be involved with. And yet, here he was being forced to begin the drinking of this pureblood societal expectation for the sake of his damn mother. He'd rather not attend like he hadn't done his entire first year but after his father offered him his Moontrimmer to please appease his mom so that he didn't have to stop hearing about her disdain, he figured it wouldn't be too bad. That was until he was getting himself ready in his black pin-striped suit with a black and white polka dot tie (outfit) and a handkerchief in his breast pocket. The second year let out a deep sigh as he purposefully waited about forty-five minutes for Alyssea to finish up her Broom Racing game and the young boy made his way to the Grounds floor with nerves puttering like butterflies within his body aching for escape.

This was a new sensation for Uly, his nerves often were incredibly unshaken but there was something unexplainable that had been giving him the jitters. It wasn't even necessarily Alyssea, the kind Hufflepuff who accepted his last minute invitation, but he did feel immense thanks that she was so considerate to the whole situation. Initially, they were a few Slytherin girls he considered asking, but ultimately, there was too much that could get back to his Mom if he went with another snake. Was Alyssea even a Pureblood? Uly hadn't thought to ask, most of the people he surrounded himself by happenstance seemed to just be a part of the community he'd been born into.

Ulysses made sure he was in view from where the Hufflepuff students usually came from, dug his hands deep into his pockets, and began to nervously rock himself back and forth in this bizarre waiting game.

Well, Alyssea was certainly glad this year's Fall Ball was nowhere near the Lake or any body of water, for that matter. Having a (mostly) indoor ball for the first time since she'd been at this school truly felt like a blessing. She wasn't exactly keen on reliving her trauma a year after it happened.

She'd picked her outfit the day before, knowing the stress of watching her racers would tire her out. It was a simple black midi dress underneath an ivory-coloured coat and her trusty pair of white heels. It was possibly the closest thing to a detective theme she would get with a limited closet selection and still have some comfort. Alyssea learned from last time that long dresses caused more trouble than they were worth.

Forever grateful that Hufflepuff wasn't in the basement or in the higher towers of the castle, she rushed out to meet Ulysses.

"Heya! Thanks for waiting," she huffed once she saw him. "Ready when you are. The suit looks good, by the way." Alyssea offered him a smile at the compliment.

"Any activities that interest you? I think I saw something out in the Courtyard. Or you feeling hungry?" She looked around at the decorations. Alyssea hadn't had the time to properly look at the ball in between Quidditch and Racing, so she was truly walking in blind. There were always some sort of activity at these events, though. Wherever they went, she just wanted to have a peaceful dinner after that.

nevergonnagiveyouup𝖙he gala as enchanting as it was matching the evening outside, the sky as it glimmered a thousand different sparks after the rain and wind that had befallen the castle and it's premises earlier in the day. The very hall which had caught Prat's attention prior was now beginning to fill as groups of students were now filling in. The amount of people in attendance was growing and so were the people he was now paranoid of. Seeing the pure blood kids who had never previously chanced upon muggle food was a fascinating sight indeed. Their faces going from curiosity, denial, disdain and then to perhaps abandoning their approach while others pushed their teachings aside and gave those foods a chance.

Prat was familiar with some of these food, not the olden ones but the ones that were produced in recent times were delicacies he had come to enjoy during his summers spent with his aunt. All the fresh treats that adorned this table had his name written on them. It was his duty as a food "inamorato" to take a spin through them all and savour those flavours into the endless night. Afterall you rarely get a chance you dine in hogwarts outside of those drably uniforms. They were a source of pride for him in the first few months he had spent in the castle but similar to most things, they lost their charm over time as he now yearned for more fashionable clothes among his closet for the day to day activities.

On his food fulfilling journey, right as he was enjoying a heart, someone older decided to propose. This was something he hadn't expected before, atleast not at a ball with hundreds of people gathered around. The rejection if it came would be too gruesome to ever grow out of, is what he believed at his age. Thankfully for the oldbones it seemed to go well as Prat now lost interest. Right as he was about to dig into his next item on the buffet, he felt a hand on his shoulder. Turning around Prat had to almost stop himself from doing a double take.

There stood Alex, glimmering like the north star in a sea of night sky, the most radiant of them all Prat had bear witness to so far in the night. The fancy lights only made her features stand out more. Her appearance alone made the world around him come to a halt. Those few seconds felt like an eternity to him, just taking it all into his eyes. He was even a bit taken aback, whatever he felt wasn't a familiar feeling, this wasn't mere effects of beauty. He had seen enough beautiful women in his few hours today.

Breaking out of his trance after she questioned him upon his silence ever after her greeting, Prat came back to his senses. He attempted to do something he had seen his father doin but forgot the words,"You look distinguishingly beautiful tonight" He was sure not only would the compliment break through Alex's fake confidence, it was sure to tip the balance back to Prat's favour. Holding the hand Alex placed on his shoulder upon cleaning his hands, Prat look down straight into Alex's. Smiling slightly at her, advancing with "May i have this dance?" He used to wish for days like this. Specially since he could not sneak this chance with her earlier at the summer camp. He was this close and it didn't end how he wanted. This was the moment.

Uri was really in his element when it came to this year's fall ball. He wasn't even a ball person (especially after the last one where someone had played a cruel trick and got a mask stuck to his face) but when he heard the buzz around this one he knew he had to go. It was truly like this was made for him. Themed after the golden age of the mafia he had been nerding out from the moment he heard about it and knew exactly what he was going to do.

He stood in front of the mirror in his Ravenclaw dormitory and examined himself, adjusting his tie one last time. He thought he looked the part and it was all thanks to his dad. When he'd heard about the theme for the ball he'd jotted down a note and rushes to the owlery, sending a school owl to his dad asking him to find him a pinstripe suit to wear to the ball. His father had not disappointed. He looked at himself in the mirror. He was wearing a three-piece navy with white pinstripe suit with a white shirt and blue and white paisley tie, along with a paisley pocket square. To tie it together, he put his navy fedora on his head and turned the brim down over his eyes. He thought he looked quite dapper and would fit right in.

He could barely contain himself as he walked down the stairs towards the Great Hall. It was just so exciting. The opportunities were limitless and he couldn't wait to see what they'd done with the place. When he arrived, he was not disappointed. It looked like someone straight out of Goodfellas. "Wow, what a perfect place for a sit-down," he said to himself as he looked over the Great Hall. He chuckled when he saw the maroon drag marks on the floor - apparently, someone had already been rubbed out.

Uri surveyed the Great Hall, looking for people he knew before giving up, walking over to the food eras table, and checking it out but not grabbing anything. He had to admit he was a little disappointed. For an event oozing old-school mafia there was no Italian food to tie it together. Where was the macaroni? The veal cutlets? The scungilli? He would've even settled for an appetizer of mozzarella and prosciutto topped with some balsamic.

it has been a while since Juni has socialized in any way. She’s mostly kept to herself, trying to catch up on her work so she wasn’t stuck with the second years. However, the 14 year old decided she would allow herself a night of fun. The last ball she went to she faintly remembered setting someone on fire.. and she had nightmares for a year. But there were new students, new things to try. She was almost certain she would regret this night, but a sick part of her was hoping for something horrifying to happen, something that would stick with her forever. Something she could sit in, her comfortable sadness.

She was quite fond of the dress, one of the perks that came with living with your rich uncle is you could get just about anything.and now that June was out of the house and out of her uncles hair, he seemed to like her considerably more.

Her hair was kept in its thick waves, she didn’t have the time nor skills to do it. She wore a wine red shade of lipstick and a burnt orange eyeshadow. She had a handheld purse with her, and was wearing chunky heels. She wore black earrings along her pointed ears.

She would be going alone. Draven Mirador also kept to himself, and it seemed their relationship was something that couldn’t be fixed. She shrugged it off, almost as if she didn’t care. Because she didn’t. She shouldn’t. It was her choices that led to this.

So the 14 year old decided to take on the role a wallflower, entering the ball and making a beeline for a seat.

As Oakleigh stood at the table, somewhat enjoying her spam, she looked around for the classmate she had gained a slight crush on. A hopeless romantic she was, so she didn't expect to be liked back. However, in her heart she hoped that she would have the feelings returned. Well, hopefully.

As her eyes scanned the room, she saw him. He looked quite dapper. Fancy and poised. Of course he did. He always looked fancy, being a pureblood. She assumed he had been to places and meetings like this many times before. His dark wine coloured scarf was beautiful, and it contrasted his pale skin. She was about to make her way over and greet him, when she paused. A fellow ravenclaw girl had bumped into him. It didn't take a genius to notice his reaction to the girl.

Oakleigh stayed back, listening and watching on to the conversation. She started to compare herself to the girl, a bad habit she's always had. Sanguius was clearly smitten with this girl. Oakleigh couldn't help but feel her heart heavy. She had lost her appetite. She threw her plate of Spam away nearby. It was at this time she thought of retreating back to her common room, to the comfort of her blanket and journal.

The blonde girl was beautiful. Her blonde hair looked smooth as silk from a distance, and she could guarentee that it was up close as well. The red and black dress was so elegant. Oakleigh always wished she could pull off that style. She was starting to doubt her own outfit choices for the ball. She thought she looked so beautiful in the dress she had chosen. However, she didn't feel it anymore. Her brain went through everything it thought was wrong. She should've stuck to the noir theme. She should've not even gone in the first place. She hated large social events that could've caused trouble or danger. She convinced herself to go in hopes of seeing the boy. She felt so stupid. She knew she was a crybaby, but she didn't want to show it. She shook her head, walking away to find an area away from the two to think.

She had to figure out her next move. Would she go back to her dorm room, or would she stay and let the night go it's way. She went into her pink bag, which she always kept on her. She pulled out a wet wipe, dabbing the under of her eyes. She had cried slightly. She just wanted to keep the world away from her, but at the same time, she wanted comfort. She had hoped to have a fun and eventful evening. But now, everything seemed hopeless. She hadn't even noticed the whole proposal thing going on with the whirlwind of thoughts going through her head. She grabbed her sketchbook and pen, doodling away at the paper. She would draw portraits of people she saw. She hummed a tune to herself. It was 0f a song called 'Alice' by Avril Lavgine.

Only time would tell if she would leave or not.

The clicking sounds of Jun‘s shoes could be heard as she made her way through the long halls of Hogwarts Castle. The night was chilly but the attire her Mother had sent for the occasion kept just the right temperature. It was almost costume like and made Jun feel like a detective from an old book. Her long hair was falling over her shoulders in a half up half down style, completed by waves, some of her hair tied back by a ribbon as to not fall in her face. The top of her head was covered by a black fedora, a small pen tugged into the band. The dress pants made her look a little taller than usual and the sewn in corset of her blazer embraced her thin appearance. She felt secure in what she was wearing.

Until she did not.

Coming closer to the festivities, Jun’s steps became slower. Her eyes met several girls dressed entirely different for the occasion. Yes, the event was called a fall ball but until now, Jun had most certainly felt like the opportunity was opted for a different genre. She was no stranger to elegant clothing and never missed a theme. Never until this very moment had she ever felt uncomfortable in a setting where she usually belonged. Smoothing out her trousers, she took a deep breath and moved again. Her eyes searched for Mey before she could even take in the appearance of the already familiar great hall.

When she finally found her, brown met green and a small smile settled on the Japanese girls lips. Mey was leaning against the wall, dressed similarly to Jun, who took a breath of relief and walked closer. „Good Evening,“ She smiled and took of her hat. „Have you already took a look around?“ Truthfully, even though they were back to normal now, Jun still felt a little weird with the situation now. Averting her eyes from her best friend, she looked into the hall and noticed the difference from usually. Jazz filled her ears, sky sparkling and yet there was somewhat of a mysterious vibe about the hall. „This looks interesting,“ she followed her words, noting the dark red splashes on the floor and the different array of foods and drinks, most looking rather unappealing. „Do you want to move further inside?

Balls. Dancing. Laughter. Food. Dress-up.

Those were just a few of the many things which permeated Aodhan's consciousness after he entered the room. This event was, in a way, just a fancier version of the proms he often saw on television shows. The lot of them would gather under the excuse of it all and do things they could likely do at any other point in the year. And if they could do this at any point, then it didn't seem all that special after all, did it?

So, what could he do to actually make this something memorable for himself? Aodhan was racking his brain for an answer as he munched on the provided food sticks, uncaring of the potential crumbs that would mar his outfit.

It didn't have to be anything necessarily big, and there was already smoke spread out over the area—actually, what the hell? What was that about? Just an atmospheric effect for the Halloween season, or... ? Suddenly, his face lit up. An investigation! That was one thing he could do, and it seemed in line with the ball's layout, as if they were practically begging someone to step in. There was a good chance he was wrong about this being "nothing special" in that case, and the organizers were in luck that he was up for their challenge.

With his mind made up, the young wizard adjusted his newsboy cap, scarfed down the rest of his snack, and began his march throughout the room. From what he could recall, it was imperative to examine the perimeter as closely as possible. Just like a real detective! And he would have continued to do so unabated if not for the groundbreaking words coming from elsewhere in the hall.

"Winnie Harper, will you marry me?"

Oh? Something like that was happening here? Perhaps wizards still followed those older social standards of marriage. A part of him found it honestly horrifying, since it was like signing one's freedom away, but he'd engage in the sheer "happiness" and "excitement" of a wedding proposal regardless. Almost instantly, the boy began to whistle and applaud like he often saw the adults do. He even threw in an extra whoop to really send it home. There! No doubt that guy on his knees would appreciate the support!

Aodhan then turned to whoever was closest to him at that moment, a girl seemingly close to his own age, and spoke to her under his breath.

"I give them, like, one year after graduation tops. Maybe even six months before they divorce."

This was not a wise idea. Eun-ji thought as much when she accepted Peri’s invitation and that feeling kept clinging to her ever since. Why would Hana @Hanako Tone care, who she went to the ball with? If he wanted to go with her, he could have asked. He was not as much of a coward as she was when it came to these things, was he? In which case, it probably meant he found someone else he’d rather spend his evening with…or just decided to slither through the crowd and flirt with random beautiful people. He liked to do that a lot. The witch shook her head, trying to get said image out of her head. She missed the times when these things did not bother her. Although others often praised her for her intelligence, she didn't feel all that smart lately. In love, people behaved as fools and she was no exception. She even told Peri about her conflicted feelings for the evasive Slytherin, which was most unusual for her. Eun-ji didn't like to talk about what was going on behind her perfectly framed walls, but her housemate had a strange knack for prying information out of her. At least, she felt slightly less mortified after finding out he struggled with the very same thing at the moment.

The Ravenclaw took a deep breath, glancing in the mirror for the last time. She looked like a 50s Hollywood celebrity or, which was far less to her liking, a true pure blood witch. Her hair was curled into smooth big waves, reflecting the time period of the ball theme, and it was adorned with a black and red rose hairclip. The eye-catching red dress, which hugged her figure perfectly and the red lipstick complimented Peri’s necktie while her black satin gloves and mesh shoes in turn matched his black trench simpler. Hidden underneath the overskirt, was a zip up pocket storing some band aids, gauze and bandages. She always took those to Hogwarts balls after realizing how catastrophic they could be. Some might think her odd for taking muggle medical supplies to a magical event, but she didn’t care. Eun-ji learned long ago that not everything could be solved by magic and she liked to be prepared.

Even though the plan for today's evening was a little foolish, there were some beneficial aspects to it as well. For once, the young ballerina didn’t need to stand among the crowd, anxiously awaiting her date. She was glad to have a Ravenclaw partner this time, so they could walk down the treacherous staircase together, and although Peri was annoyingly perceptive, she found that she rather enjoyed his company. They may have not been close friends, but she always respected him and as it turned out, they both loved to dance! She was certainly anticipating having a date who actually wanted to dance and who had skills to match her own. And should her presence at his side help him with his own romantic pursuits? Well, that would be an added bonus. Besides if…no…when things went sideways, she knew he would have her back and she would have his. They’ve done it before and they could do it again.

Before dancing however, there would be games. Peri suggested to join one, and once again, Eun-ji said yes against her better judgement. Regardless of her unwillingness to socialise, as a proper Ravenclaw, how could she not want to try her luck at a mystery solving game? Not to mention, it was apparently a no magic zone and she somewhat missed the world devoid of magic. No matter how dazzling it was, there was darkness constantly lurking beneath all that glimmer. It could get suffocating at times, which made her long for her father's less complicated one.

Hand in hand, the pair arrived to the Great Hall, which had to be crossed in order to get to the game in question. The room was decorated as magnificently as always and they certainly weren’t exactly inconspicuous themselves. Peri looked handsome as ever even without a fancy suit. His pure-blood upbringing, giving him that perfect gentleman aura and just the right amount of mystery to intrigue the eye. It was hard to understand how someone like him struggled to win the heart of his lady. Then again, love was not so simple. She would know. After all, Eun-ji wore her fiery red dress and came here for the very same reason. Contrary to what her grandparents wished, she didn’t like to be the center of attention but she was used to wearing flashy outfits by now, which came in handy tonight. She also realised how much easier it was when you had someone equally flashy by your side while doing so.

Feeling a light squeeze on her arm, Eun-ji turned to look at her partner. “I think so.” She nodded with a soft smile, reading the unspoken question from his gaze and tone of voice. In truth, the witch was still not entirely certain, she was doing the right thing yet her own voice was as calm and steady as always. She was not one to back down easily once she made up her mind about something. Whatever was meant to happen tonight, she would let it happen. Scanning the path before them the witch sighed. “I wonder why they went through all that effort to decorate if they were just going to blind us by the fog.” She hoped it wouldn’t be as bad as it looked. Tripping and twisting an ankle was not how she wanted her evening to start.

─────Kenzie listened intently as Alex expressed her nerves about the night awaiting them downstairs. As she placed the final touches of blush and mascara on her craftily pampered complexion, she simply giggled and shook her head. She looked at Alex through the mirror, as one does instead of simply turning their head, and shifted her focus to adjusting her framing pieces of hair, curling them for about the tenth time of the evening.

─────“Lex, calm down!” she giggled, using her fingers to adjust her updo. “You look absolutely gorgeous! If he doesn’t like you tonight and doesn’t treat you like the absolute Princess you are, then he’s going to have to deal with me.” Prat was Kenzie’s other best friend, and although she loved him, she’s been itching for a reason to beat him up. Context? You get none.

─────Kenzie stood up in her own gown. It was custom made in the Muggle world, courtesy of her parents, of course. It was her ‘back to school’ gift, designed and created specifically for tonight. It was a gorgeous, elegantly layered, gothic inspired, black dress; fit with a corset, lace sleeves, gloves, and a lace collar. She went with classic diamond earrings as her trademark accessory. She looked poised and elegant…regal, even…in her gown. She shuffled over excitedly to where Alex was standing with her shoes and placed her hands on the brunette’s shoulders gently.

─────“Darling, my appearance pales in comparison to your beauty. I am merely but a hermit living in your shadow,” she said in a funny and overly dramatically posh voice, before walking over to her own bed and slipping on her own pair of heels. She didn’t mind wearing heels all night. Not only was she simply just used to it, having worn heels to many formal events and galas with her parents in the past, but she wasn’t planning on spending a lot of time on her feet. Unlike Alex and Prat, Kenzie did not have a date to the ball, and that was just as well. Instead of throwing it all on the dance floor, she was quite content to sit at a table for the majority of the evening, and her feet would thank her for it. After her shoes were secured, she stood once more and looked at her full outfit in the mirror. I don’t look too bad…

─────Alex soon grabbed her hand and rushed to the door of their dorm, leaving Kenzie with just enough time to make sure her wand was tucked safely away in a hidden pocket of her dress, and they made their way through the castle. At last, they arrived at the Great Hall and Kenzie marveled and gawked foolishly at how beautifully decorated it was. Alex pulled Kenzie to the side and began to freak out a little at her appearance, to which Kenzie laughed and grabbed the girl’s shoulders. “Lex! You look amazing, your teeth look just fine!”

─────She smiled back at Alex and watched as the girl dashed into the Great Hall. She chuckled and shook her head, before taking a deep breath and slowly entering the Hall herself. No one was waiting for her so she took her time, admiring the decorations and atmosphere. She slowly trudged her way through the Hall until she reached the wall next to a few tables. She put her back against that wall and breathed out, looking around at the crowd. She couldn’t see where Alex had gone, and despite her naturally tall height being increased by her heels, she couldn’t make out any friendly faces she could recognize.

─────So, she stayed right there, standing against the wall and bobbing her head slightly to the beat of the music.
