Drowning Preptober Prompts 2024

WEEK 1 PROMPTS:
Prompt 1:
The Barbarian | Write about an incident that would anger your character. Why would this make them angry? How do they deal with that anger?
"Can we really do this? Can we really take the boat back from Lure Island?" I whispered to my friends standing beside me, "It seems so easy when you make a plan but then... now we're going to actually do it, do you think we can?"

My friends Zia and Emma looked at each other and each of them put an arm around me. "Do you remember that day when I told you you were 4 minutes late to swimming with us that morning?" Zia asked.

"Yeah?" I questioned.

"The same day the people from Lure Island attacked the boat with poison bullets killing so many people." Emma added.

I shivered at the though and nodded.

"They killed so many of our friends on the boat. Remember Izzy? Remember Roro the dog?" Zia said.

I felt a surge in my stomach. What were my friends doing? "How is this reassuring?" I asked.

"And most importantly, they killed our family. DESTROYED our home." Emma yelled.

I had never heard her yell before. I could feel it though. The anger building up in my guts. The necklace felt heavy with power.

"We have nothing to lose Samantha. We can only benefit from this. We were made to do this. We have to do this. We can do this. Don't you agree Emma?" Zia asked.

Emma nodded. "Samantha, we're not going to let them win right? Not after they killed our friends, our dog, separated us from our parents, killed our mother and hurt Jake and other people on River Island! We can do this Samantha. If we can't, then no one else can."

The anger building up exploded. I felt as if I was on fire. I could do this. We were a team. We would do this for a better world. For my mother. For my friends. For everyone. And most importantly, for Jake. I wanted a life with him. Where my dreams of being his girlfriend could come true.

The supplies he needed were on that deck. And I had a feeling I could save him. "Hold on Jake, I'm going to save you." I whispered. And then I stood up. "We have no time to waste! LET'S GO TAKE BACK OUR HOME!! WE SHALL AVENGE THE LOST!!" I yelled.

My friends cheered. My pride swelled. But my anger stayed. It would help though. The more anger I had the more powerful I felt. This was how we would win.

WEEK 2 PROMPTS:
Prompt 7:
The Paladin | Write about a cause your character would fight for. Why is it so important to them?
"Mother no!" I screamed. "You can't just leave yourself behind! Come with us! We can sneak you onto the boat! No one will no and-"

I stopped. My mother had tears streaming down her face. So did I. She shook her head. "I can't sweetheart. I can't." she whispered, "There is no way I can make it to the boat without getting hit by the poison. I am weak and old. You are young and fast. You can make it."

I whimpered and ran up to her. She embraced me in a hug. For the last time. No. Why did this have to happen to me? I was normal. I had never known my dad and now I was losing my only other family. My mother.

"I need you to be strong sweetpea." she said. She took a necklace off her neck. It was the one with a tiny bottle on it. She placed it on my neck. "This will help you be strong."

And then she shoved a diary in my hand. Then she became serious. "When you go out there, it will be chaos. You need to get to the boat fast, and then head to River Island, not the USA. From there, you will meet people who will help you take back the boat. I know you can do this. I believe in you. And my very last wish, is for you to get that boat back. Please."

I nodded my head. I could not believe I was agreeing to this. But then again, what other choice did I have? I had pleaded with her. And we were running out of time. "Are you sure you can't come? And is there any chance you will live?" I asked, tears running down my face. I had to be strong. I would be strong.

"Likely no. But remember I love you. And one day, I'll see you in heaven." she said. She brushed the hair out of my face and hugged me for the last time. She placed a kiss on my left cheek and shoved me out the door. "Go get them mi reina!! Remember who you are! You're my daughter!"

And then I couldn't hear her or see her. I was running. I was falling. I was crying. But I was fighting. Because if there was anything worth fighting for left in this world it was her. It was family. And my friends. I couldn't let them die too.

I wouldn't let my mothers sacrifice go in vain. Oh no. I would do everything to fulfill my mothers wish. Everything.

WEEK 3 PROMPTS:
Prompt 10:
The Sorcerer | Write about your character discovering they have magic. What sort of magic is it? How will they use this magic?
The necklace. That was what was stopping the poison from spreading. It was hardly a surprise to Samantha at this point. Surprises were overrated.

Considering what had happened in the past, well, she wasn't sure how many days, nothing should be surprising. Her mother was dead, her home was gone, and now, magic existed in the form of this necklace?

Whatever. At least this was the only good surprise. I wasn't going to die. I guess that was good. Although a part of me wanted to join my mother. That is if I went to heaven. I hadn't done anything that made me deserve to go there.

But I had a job to finish. My mother's last wish was for me to get the boat back. And I was going to do that. So, yes the necklace was the only good surprise. That made me happy. It also explained why my mother gave it to me.

I wondered what other magic it did. And then I had an idea. I ran my hand down the sharp edge of the boat. It stung and I cried out wincing. But almost immediately, it healed. I grinned. This was a healing necklace! It healed me. It could heal others. I wondered what else it could do.

Feeling fine I hopped out of the bed and ran down to the bottom deck of the boat. I had to share the news. "GUYS! This necklace is special! It heals others!!" I demonstrated by cutting myself again, but less harshly and then showed my friends Zia and Emma how it healed.

"Wow," they said gasping. "That is cool!"

"My question is, what else can it do?" I asked.

"It could make us fly, or teleport us or it could help us read others minds or-" Zia started, ticking all the options off of her fingers.

"Or," Emma replied softly cutting Zia off, "It works to protect the wearer."

Zia stopped. "That's actually a good theory..." she said nodding her head.

I smiled. "Well, there's one way to find out!" I replied.

Zia and Emma turned to me, "Hey wait, I'm not sure if what I said was true!"

"Aw c'mon. Let's try something." I thought about it for a second. "I can jump off the boat! I know how to swim but the necklace should like help me out."

"Are you sure that's a good-" Emma started.

It was too late anyway. I took the stairs by twos to get to the upper deck and before they could change my mind I jumped into the water. It was cold and I made myself not swim. Yet somehow I was afloat.

And when I submerged myself in water, I could breathe. It was genius. Emma was a genius. It worked. Pulling myself out of the water, I grinned to my friends.

"Y'all are right!! It does work!!" I exclaimed.

"OK now get out of the water on to the boat!!" Emma yelled.

"Nah, I'm fine out here!" I said grinning, "I can even breathe under water!!" I would totally win every contest.

"SAMANTHA ALLIE LIU!" Zia shouted, "GET UP HERE!"

I sighed and pulled myself back onto the boat with my friends help. "That was fun!" I said grinning.

"Wait now I wanna try," Zia pouted.

"ZIA!" Emma exclaimed.

"Sorry Em," Zia sighed.

"You ca-" but I stopped as Emma glared at me. I guess it wasn't the best idea because of the poison. But either way, I was happy. And that was something. Despite all the terrible things that had happened recently my friends were there for me, and that was all I needed.

WEEK 4 PROMPTS:
Prompt 12:
The Wizard | Write about a centre of learning in your setting. Is it used regularly? Do people enjoy going there?
"A school?" I asked. I had heard that word before. But I had never been to a "school" before. After all, I was born and raised on the Aquamarine. Stop. Don't think about that right now Samantha. I was still traumatized.

"It's a place where people go to learn and are able to meet and hang out with friends," Jake replied kindly. I still owed him for giving me a tour of this whole place. He called it small. It seemed quite big to me.

However, this was the real world, not the Aquamarine. Things were so strange here. Back in the Aquamarine, there were tutors, one on ten sessions for 3 hours every day. Now you only have to go to school from Monday to Friday? But it was 6 hours of school?

"How many people did you say go to this school?" I asked.

"Everyone of age. Grades Kindergarten to Twelfth grade all in the same school. Basically you start school at 5 and end when you are 18. So I would say a few hundred?" Jake explained.

I gasped. Hundreds of people? I didn't even know hundreds of people! "Whoa." I replied. I just thought that through. How many new people would I meet? At the same time, I was scared.

"Trust me, you're gonna do great at school! The people are nice," Jake stopped, "Well mostly." He shook his head.

I raised my eyebrows. "Mostly?" I questioned.

He ignored me. "Now that you're out of the hospital, you'll start school on Monday!" he replied, "Warning though, Mr. Morris loves to drown on and talk in English. I would bring some food!"

He handed me the schedule. I opened it.

FOR SAMANTHA:

8:30 AM | Period 1: Math Grade 11 with Ms. Urso in room 222
9:15 AM | Period 2: English Grade 11 with Mr. Morris in room 345
10:00 AM | Period 3: Free period
10:45 AM | Brunch
11:00 AM | Period 4: Science Grade 11 with Mr. Donel in room 100
11:45 AM | Period 5: History with Ms. Rones in room 146
12:30 PM | Lunch
1:15 PM | Period 6: ELECTIVE (Elective choosing happens on the second week of school)
2:00 PM | Period 7: Swimming with Mr. Edwards in the Gym

The periods were the classes in order. These were my classes. These were the times. The places. The teachers. It was all quite overwhelming. However, I was grateful to Jake for explaining everything to me.

"Oh hey, you have a free period at the same time as me!" Jake exclaimed looking at his own schedule he had on his paper. "We could hang out!"

I grinned. That was going to be one thing I looked forward to. I owed him for sure and maybe in the beginning I had hated him but he was really nice. And maybe I had a teensy tiny itsy bitsy crush on him. But you didn't hear that from me.

"For sure!" I said. I stared at the school up ahead. It looked big but it was pretty. Many classrooms and a really pretty grassy area in the middle. This was my school. This was practically going to be home.

I had an actual home here with all my other friends and some people supervising us, but I was going to spend lots of time at this school. I had to do well. I had to make a good impression. I wondered where my other friends were and how they were taking this information.

It would be okay. If the people at this school would like me, then maybe I could convince them to help me get the Aquamarine back. But I deserved some time for myself first.

So this was my plan. Two months of time to relax, and then the real planning to take our ship back would begin. After all, I had to fulfill my mother's promise to me.
