Personality:
Mathis is an intelligent young boy, with some sort of fascination for the dark and the mysterious. He can seem a bit distant and hard to reach, but he is very loyal to those he trusts. He comes from an ancient magical family, and it is noticeable at first when you meet him. He has a lot of charm, and can change the feeling in a room as he just senses what to say. Underneath the surface he is just a boy who likes to have fun, read a lot and hike in the woods around his home. His parents taught him that magic isn’t only power, but also a great responsibility, and he is determined to life his life like that.

History:

Mathis was born on May 2, 2012, in the ancient magical family Noir. They live in Belgium, in the outskirts of a small place called Tenneville. They live in an ancient mansion, passed down through generations, full with books on magic, magical objects and portraits of their ancestors.
His father, Etienne Noir, is an auror for the ministry in Belgium, specialised in finding dark magic. He has a great eye for details and a strong sense of justice. He is strict but just, and always encourages his children to work hard and never chose the easy path. He taught them the dangers of the dark arts and that it is important to always do the right thing.
His mother, Amélie Noir (born Rousseau), is a Botanic expert. She tends to and delivers a variety of magical plants to Healers and Potion brewers. She is originally from France, and graduated from Beauxbatons excelling in Herbology. She has a kind personality, which is a great addition to the firm hand of Etienne. She raised her children with love and patience, and encourages them to find their own path in the magical world. She has a passion for magical plants, and she passed her love for nature and caring for others on to Mathis.
Mathis has a sister, Elise Noir, who is seventeen. She is in her last year at Beauxbatons, and is excelling in Charms and Duelling. She is very popular and has lots of friends. She is charismatic and confident. She is very protective for Mathis, although sometimes she can be a bit too dominant. Despite her popularity and busy schedule, she always makes time for her little brother.
The last one in the family is Mathis’ younger brother Léon Noir, who is eight years old. He is a very curious young boy, always looking to impress his older siblings. He has lots of energy, asks a lot of questions and has a lot of ideas. He looks up to Mathis and Elise, and hopes to be as talented as them one day.
The Noirs are a close family, with an emphasis on tradition and honour. They are a well respected old wizarding family, and the children feel a bit pressured to live up to the parents’ high expectations. Nevertheless, there is a lot of love between the members of the family. And as strict as the parents are, they support their children in everything they do.
In their younger years, the Noir children were raised at home and home schooled until they are old enough to attend Beauxbatons. Their parents each had their own career, but they managed their hours to be with the children as much as they could. There are quite a few years between each sibling, which meant that Mathis was mostly dependent on his own. From the moment he could read, he spent a lot of time in the family library, reading every book he could find. He also enjoyed going outside, hiking in the large woods surrounding their home. At first, his sister took him for hikes and adventures. He looked up to her, and she protected him. They had made a treehouse together where they spent a lot of time. When Elise left for Beauxbatons, he went alone till his younger brother was old enough to come along. He showed Léon the treehouse they built and became a mentor for him.
Once a year, during the summer holidays, they take a family trip together to the south of France. They are invited by a friend of their mother, whom she attended Beauxbatons with. It is on one of these holidays, more specifically the one between his first and second year at school, that Mathis met Ruby. She was there on a family vacation too, and they met as they were both exploring their surroundings. In the week that followed they became friends and promised to keep in touch during the school year. It was during this holiday that Mathis was attacked by an unknown werewolf. Ruby found him after the attack and promised to keep his secret to herself.

First Magic:
Mathis’ first instance happened in the family library. He had been there earlier with his mother, who had read a story about magical creatures. She had placed the book back on the shelf, not realising it was a high shelf that Mathis couldn’t reach. Later that day, Mathis, who was five years old at the time, returned to the library for the book. But as hard as he tried, he couldn’t reach it. He stared and stared at the book, holding out his little hands. And suddenly the book started to slide towards the end of the shelf. Mathis jumped up and down, excited as the book came to him. As it reached the end of the shelf, it slowly tipped over the edge and, lightly as a feather, landed in Mathis’ outstretched little hands.

It was just a night like the others, a warm summer night. Mathis and his family were on a family vacation in the South of France. A week full of sun, see and not a care in the world. He had finished his first year at Beauxbatons, and he hadn’t started to think about the next year. They rented a nice cottage at the edge of a forest, and next to some lavender fields. Everything seemed perfect.

Mathis was sitting outside, gazing at the night sky where the full moon was rising. His parents were inside, preparing dinner, and his younger brother was playing at the other side of the house. He felt strangely restless, a feeling he couldn’t place. It felt like something invisible was in the air, something he couldn’t understand.

“Mathis, veux-tu m’aider?” Mathis, could you help me? his mother called from inside. He stood up and went inside, but he couldn’t loose that strange feeling. The evening continued, and after dinner Mathis decided to go out for a little walk to try and shake off that feeling. Maybe being alone, walking, could arrange his thoughts.

He left the cottage and went into the forest. The moon stood high in the sky, shining her light through the trees, making it easy for Mathis to see where he walked. It was nice outside, the air had cooled down, and the silence in the forest made him relax. He continued his path for a while, retracing his steps he had taken a lot this holiday.

But the strange feeling seemed to stay with him. He even had the feeling someone was following him. He stopped and turned around, his eyes scanning the forest around him. “Y a-t-il quelqu’un là-bas?” Is someone there? he asked, with a little tremble in his voice. The forest remained silent. Off course there is nobody, stop being paranoid, he said to himself, trying to convince him he hadn’t heard something.

And then he definitely heard a noise, low and threatening, somewhere behind him. He quickly turned around, and for a fraction of a second he thought he was dreaming. Something moved between the trees. A shadow, too big for an animal, too quick for a human. Mathis’ heart started to race, and instinctively he took a few steps back. But the creature moved closer. Mathis saw the glow in its eyes, yellow and intense, and he knew he had to run as fast as he could. His legs felt like lead, but he pushed his body and started to run. Branches from the trees hit him in the face, but he didn’t even notice it. Behind him he heard the panting of the beast, getting louder as it came closer.

He tried to run even faster, but he tripped over a tree root and fell onto the ground. Before he could get back up, he felt something heavy fell onto him. A sharp pain shot through his shoulder, as the teeth of the beast pierced his flesh. He yelled, and tried to get away from the beast. Suddenly it let him go, and he turned around. The wound on his shoulder burned like fire, and he didn’t have the strength to move. He braced himself and thought he was going to die. The creature, which he now recognised as a werewolf, looked at him with his yellow eyes. Suddenly, as of some kind of miracle, the wolf turned around and left him there. He disappeared between the trees, his panting fading away in the distance. Mathis tried to stand up, but he felt so weak from the pain and the loss of blood. His head was spinning, and he was afraid he would loose consciousness.

He didn’t know how much time had passed, but suddenly he heard a voice getting closer. Someone was calling his name. He knew that voice, and he was so glad someone had found him. “Mathis?” Ruby asked, her voice trembling at the sight of him. “What happened?”

Mathis didn’t know how she got there or how she found him. But hope grew in his chest that maybe he could survive this. Ruby fell on her knees next to him, face full of concern. “Something… attacked me,” he said, with a small voice. He saw the blood running down his arm. Ruby took out her sweater and pushed down on his shoulder. He grunted in pain. He tried to get up with the help from Ruby. “We need to get out of here,” she said. “That thing might come back.” She put his good arm around her shoulder and almost dragged him through the forest. He didn’t know how she got there or how she knew he was there, he was just glad he had help to get out of the forest. But every step hurt, and the road seemed endless.

As they reached Mathis’ house, his parents stood at the door, waiting for him to come home. His mother let out a scream when they saw him. She ran at him and helped him inside. “Ce qui s’est passé? Qui a fait ça?” What happened? Who did this? She placed him on the couch.

Ruby went in after them. “We need to get a Healer, it doesn’t look good.” His father Etienne nodded and left the room. His sister Elise came in with some hot water and towels. She took place next to her mother and they started to clean the wound.

Not long after that, a French Healer arrived. He was a friend of the family and helped them when they needed something when they were in France. He examined the wound carefully, but his eyes darkened with the second. “This doesn’t look like a normal wound,” he said. “These are marks from a werewolf.” These words left the room in shock. It was bad enough Mathis was attacked by some beast, but now this beast had left his mark on him. It slowly dawned to Mathis. On the next full moon, he also would become such a monster.

“What does that mean?” asked Elise. “It means,” the Healer began carefully, “that now he is bitten on a full moon, the curse is placed onto him. He will now change into a werewolf too, every full moon.” Elise started to cry. Mathis could only stare in front of him, too shocked to say a word. Ruby stayed close to him, with her hand on his good arm. He couldn’t admit it, but the support was very welcome. She didn’t say anything.

The Healer attended the wounds, and gave Mathis some healing potions, but he kept a worried look on his face. “The wound will heal, although it will leave a scar. But the curse I can’t undo. You need to prepare for next month. There is a special potion that is used in this case. It’s called Wolfsbane Potion. You can contact a specialised Healer when you get back home, and they will help you get the potion. You will also need to contact the school, and they will provide it for him during the school year to keep him and others safe. Try to get some sleep and we’ll continue this in the morning when I return.” He turned around and left them.

Mathis didn’t sleep much that night. He wanted to stay on the couch. Ruby had decided to stay after she got permission from her parents. Mathis was very grateful for a friend like that. She hadn’t left him alone and wanted to stay and comfort him. He hoped she would keep his secret for him, he would need some good friends if it ever got out. Eventually, his eyes fell close and he drifted of into a restless sleep.

Abilities:
Charmer (497/400 words)

From a young age, Mathis was used to formal diners and family gatherings. He met quite a few prominent wizarding families. While other kids would be shy, Mathis showed confidence and charm. He knew how to behave, when to give a compliment or make a joke to release the tension in the room. His presence made the room seem lighter, which would make any conversation much more enjoyable. His family and friends all loved when he was around.

It was clear this charm was a heritance given down by his ancestors. There were hundreds of stories about ancestors who were famous for their diplomatic skills, their ability to convince or manipulate others and their natural appealing nature. Mathis’ parents noticed this when he was still very little. They made sure he was aware of this ability, learned him how to control it and that it was not to be abused. It is a very strong ability, and could easily be used for gaining an advantage or just always getting your way. As Mathis was little, he used this on his mother more than once, trying to get what he wanted. His father was a little bit more immune to it, and has always been firm with him for using this ability for the good. He learned him he could use it better to help people than to gain advantage for himself. This would earn him much more respect later on in life.

On one of their holidays his mother took him to a market in a wizard town not far from where they were staying. She noticed a rather beautiful vase at a little stall, and was thinking to purchase it. The seller asked a lot of money , and at first they said no to the purchase. They went on looking for something similar, but couldn’t find anything. They went back to the seller, but he wouldn’t sell it for less. Mathis tried to help his mother. With a mix of flattery and playful comments he was able to get a discount on the vase his mother liked. The seller himself didn’t notice until later that he himself had become the victim of Mathis’ subtle manipulation.

He had met Ruby while on a holiday in France. They were both hiking when they crossed each other in a field. Mathis was still too young for romance, but he felt some sort of connection between them. She was shy and started walking faster to pass him, looking at her shoes. He knew he wanted to know who she was, so he used his charm to say something to her. He was polite and friendly, and complimented her for the nice braid she made in her hair. It made Ruby talk to him, and they ended up taking the rest of their hike together. Ruby felt a strange sense of attraction to this boy. They connected on this holiday, and made the foundation of a friendship, despite their differences.
