Letter No. 1 / 7 April, 2024

Dearest Natalie
Dear Natalie
Natalie,

I hope the train ride was good. I’m sorry I wasn’t on the train. Something came up with my parents, and they aren’t home for Easter Break like we thought. I just received word this morning, so I will be staying at Hogwarts over break. I know this means we won’t be able to hang out over break like we planned, and I’m sorry for the inconvenience. Have a good Easter, and I will hopefully see you again when you come back to the castle.

Happy Easter!

Kenzie

P.S: I will not be able to receive or send out any letters from here while break is going on, so we will have to wait until you return in order to talk!

Kenzie sat hunched over the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall during breakfast, hastily scribbling onto a spare piece of parchment. There had been no correspondence with her parents that morning. A large part of Kenzie felt guilty for lying to Natalie, but it was the only thing that sounded like a reasonable enough excuse for canceling plans so last-minute. After what had happened the night before on the grounds, after what Natalie had said about muggles and (by extension) Kenzie, she was fairly upset by the time she reached the Gryffindor common room. So upset, in fact, that she wasn’t sure she wanted to go home over the Easter holiday after all. She’d much rather stay at the castle with Alex, who had comforted her and invited Kenzie to stay with her at Hogwarts over the break instead.

She was sure that after some time away, she would be calm enough to see through her own feelings and understand Natalie’s point of view. She decided that after the two week holiday, when Natalie returned to the school, she would sit her down over some tea and simply tell Natalie that her words had hurt her, and they would reconcile and move on. That was the plan, at least.

So, Kenzie addressed the letter to her friend’s home, where she would receive it later that day. She folded it up nicely and graciously handed it to the school owl and watched as it took flight, letter in tow. Then, she went back up to her dorm to get ready for a full day of studying and relaxing, anticipating a holiday break full of fun and adventure with Alex.

Unbeknownst to Kenzie, however, that owl never made it to the Anderson Residence. It was intercepted by a lightning strike about halfway through the journey, and the letter (so very important in the future of their friendship) was lost to the elements; its contents and existence unknown to the eager Ravenclaw girl of which it was intended.
