"Easter Break is going to be bloody incredible!!" Nat exclaimed.
Nat was gleeful she had a friend who lived in a town so close to Gloucestershire. She was especially excited she would have Kenzie to herself when it felt like Kenzie was spending all of her time with that other kid, who was, of course, also a Gryffindor. How convenient...Kenzie and Nat had barely a schedule that aligned, on top of that...It felt to Nat like she hadn't had a chance to just sit down and have a long conversation with the elusive Kenzie for months now! Being able to walk the Grounds with Kenzie before Easter Break, and Kenzie, seemingly out of the blue, dropping the plan that they'd travel to their homes together, and each visit each other's house for some part of it, was insane! Nat couldn't be more pleased. Maybe she was worthy of someone's friendship, after all!!
Having been an introverted, homeschooled kid her whole life, Nat didn't really know how to socialize or make friends. Furthermore, as a homebody who absolutely adored her family, Nat missed home, a lot, every day. Having someone close to her home to talk to was incredibly comfortable for her, when 1st Year had just felt so bloody lonely so far! But now, everything would be better, she knew!! Grasping at this slim feeling of control, she felt nearly tunnel-visioned with excitement:
"We could have sleepovers! Bake cupcakes! My mum is so good at baking cupcakes!! YOU HAVE A POOL! OH, MY GAWSH! WE CAN GO SWIMMING!! You'll meet my parents!! They'll love you!!...Especially my dad--I mean, he's a muggleborn, so I feel like he'll get you better, y'know?!" she rambled mindlessly. "I'll show you all the things we wixen-born have that you haven't dreamt of before!! Oh! It's gonna be so fun, Kenzie!! I love spending time with you!!" She gazed at her friend, eyes shining with joy. She chose her, at last!!

"I can't wait to meet them, too!" Nat grinned to Kenzie as the girls walked downhill, slowly approaching the shoreline of the Great Lake. She had heard much about Mrs. Agatha and Carson earlier in the year, and it filled her with happiness at the thought of finally meeting them!
Nat hesitated when Kenzie inquired that of her family. "I...Uhm. I might have to get back to you," she said, shortly. Nat figured she'd talk to her parents and they'd work something out, and she'd report back to Kenzie with it being no problem in the end.
See, in Nat's mind, she hastily considered how Kenzie had been at Hogwarts for seven months and, therefore, knew the issue that occurred with having magical families interacting with muggles. Sure, a magical family could disguise itself, but it'd be difficult and take planning to do. The magical family had to be sure it wouldn't get in trouble with the Ministry. That's why she had to talk with her family. Kenzie would surely understand all of this!
"I meeean, my parents always warned me about having muggles over. Y'know...? My family is magical; we can't change ourselves for muggles!"
Being so young, Nat had a habit of saying things vaguely, whilst assuming others would fill in the gaps the way she was thinking about her phrasing, and that others would, therefore, assume she meant as well as she did. To her, this was, obviously, her explaining her family didn't want to get in trouble with the law, and that they'd find a way to accommodate Kenzie's family. Nat thought nothing more of this interaction; like the past many, it floated out of her memory into irrelevancy.
Not observing Kenzie's face at all, even more tunnel-visioned in her excitement, Nat spewed, "We are going to have the best break, Kenz! I'm so glad you chose me for once. It'll be really nice! School has definitely separated us, but it's nice to have something WE planned together in OUR off-time for once!! Oh, man, I'm so happy!!"

Nat thought she picked up on Kenzie's silence; then, Kenzie went on. "It’s getting quite late, I should probably head on up so I can get packed before tomorrow."
"That's fair!" Nat responded, now, after her own slight hesitance, quickening her rate of speech out of relief. "I guess, I'll just let you know what's going on with my family regarding seeing yours tomorrow!" Nat wasn't sure if Kenzie was even listening anymore. Wow, she must be really tired, Nat surmised, feeling guilty about keeping Kenzie out so late...and hoping she, herself was right.
See, deep down, Nat's thoughts were somewhere different: Kenzie had asked to see her for Easter Break, so she couldn't possibly hate her that much! What would Nat have even said...? She had a slight inkling that she hadn't been clear enough about...something, despite forgetting the details of the interaction; regardless, she decided it was fine and shrugged off her worries for the moment. This would come back to eat away at her later that night, despite attempts to imagine more fun scenarios instead; over time, perhaps to protect her sanity, she'd compartmentalize this worry until it was hard to recover the details of it, same with what she did with most other notions she didn't want to face.
"Goodnight. You should think about going inside soon, too. The Prefects are bound to start roaming any minute."
"Oh, you're right! That's a good point. I really don't want to get you in trouble, or me," Nat laughed sheepishly, feeling rising shame and anxiety deep in her chest despite only her loose awareness as to why, exactly.
Nat watched Kenzie turn her heel, as though she, herself were in some kind of tunnel, once again; this time, this feeling was due to anxiety, and not excitement. "Erm...goodnight," she called, aimlessly quietly, after Kenzie; if she'd wanted the message to be caught by Kenzie's ears, she would've tried a little harder to speak up. Alas, Nat was so used to her voice being one commonly tossed aside by the breeze, struggling to be heard regarding how she really felt.
Nat waited patiently until Kenzie was a bit away, and, on top of that, chose a different route, dreading the thought of running back into her after she'd already said goodbye. She headed for the flighty Eagles' nest, hoping to daydream her way into ignorance and fantasy, just as she'd habitually done for her whole life for the sake of her own comfort.
