While the world enjoyed the glorious burst of summers glow Matthew was holed up in his room spending days upon days surrounded by texts, letters and any other materials his mentor had been able to provide. All his work, all his training had formulated to this moment where he found himself entirely alone stood in a prepared stance in front of the training dummies of the defence against the dark arts classroom. While the rest of his classmates were tangled up in the trivial pursuits of reunions, he stood alone with practised poise a powerful stance he had studied in the photography that splayed the pages of Duelling Championship textbooks and newspaper articles.

Matthew had left Hogwarts last year with a solidary focus, he would learn to defend himself no matter the cost, no matter the risk. It had been almost unbearable to resist using his magic during the Summer months and his wand clearly agreed as the hunger for release gathered in his arm causing the fingertips of his hand to buzz with a soft hum of power. It was tantalising, intoxicating even, and desired to be set free.

Setting the target to life it began racing around the room wheeling in defensive movement strategies he recognised from his studies, so steadying his breath to slow the world around him he calculated it’s pathing. The speed in which it harnessed sparked nothing but ravenous excitement through his spirit as he was reborn into the magical world. All that time unable to harness the gifts inside of him were over for he felt magic fill the air around him lighting the darkest of corners with twinkling light, after last year he was unsure if Hogwarts felt like home, but magic certainly did.

Finally it was time, having calculated his opponents intents he was ready to attempt the spell he had devoted most of his time to perfecting. Of course such efforts were difficult when magic itself was forbidden outside of the school but in his heart, he knew his magic would only amplify the effort he had made and knew he would succeed, he had to. Letting his wand go light in his fingers the eloquent wood danced within his hand and moving his wrist to motion the wand in a hook like movement he exclaimed the incantation “Petrificus Totalus.”

Suddenly a white flash erupted from his wand and in the aftermath all that was heard in the silence was the clatter of the dummy falling lifeless to the floor completely locked in paralysis. All his work had paid off just as he intended, and he couldn’t be happier. After a year of feeling powerless, uneducated in a world not meant for him he finally felt he had proved his place. Proved it to himself for no one else mattered, only he could tell himself who he was to be just as his father had said.

With his introduction to the Viridian Vipers going better than he ever could have imagined Matthew felt himself even more inspired than before to continue to build his depth of knowledge and seek out spells further than his current study. Pulling books from the library he stumbled upon a slightly nastier hex than those he had previously learned. The teeth growing hex was as simple in Latin incantation as it was in description yet if used offensively was sure to deal a significant amount of physical damage not to mention the emotional.

Occasionally Matthew found himself at moral odds when learning and hexes seemed to exist in a particular grey area that he could never find a way to categorise. In a way the spell could simply be a product of medical dentistry or fall in the category of glamour magic but something about its hex status made him worry about all the ways it had been used to punish or maim the undeserving. Magic had such beauty to it but much like a double edged blade their was a sharpness that could cut and bleed those that reached for it.

Cherry wood wand balancing between his forefingers Matthew paced the floor of the classroom weighing such moral fibres in his heavy mind. Having started this journey to defend himself against the threats of magic and those who wield it, he worried that by starting on this path he would be as complacent with magic as those who were raised on it. Small frightening visions of him becoming the kind of person who would purposefully use such magic darkly lay worried seeds in the garden of his heart. Yet perhaps that was the very reason why he had to learn, with every piece of knowledge came understanding and with understanding he could pick a stance and make the choice of who he was to be.

That was what his father had instilled in him before he left for his Second Year. Matthew had come home skewed in confusion about who he was and how much magic had changed him but now he knew better. Change was something we had to actively work towards and seek out, your actions define who you are and in those actions is always choice. Now wielding his wand he drew out the incantation and without the willingness of another target he turned the wand on himself directing the point towards his canines. Muttering "Densageo" he envisioned the teeth growing large like fangs and within seconds they began to grow matching his vision perfectly.

Seeing the control he had over the spell eased the root of his worry slightly but the effortless way in which he had performed a magic that could be so easily used for dark means would continue to weigh on him for the rest of the day. In the comfort of his room he found himself wondering into the long night and decided that perhaps he was looking at it all wrong. Maybe magic itself was not innately dark or light but much like choosing who you wanted to be, spells were influenced by their caster. It was easy to blame a spell for its darkness but all magic required intention and could that really be placed on the spell. The night would eventually fade into dreamless sleep but the question would filter his view for far long after.

Snakes had a mesmerising appearance that hid behind a deadly nature. Such small creatures were capable of taking down foes far beyond their size with nothing but a bite. When they ate they consumed entirely breaking down their prey until nothing remained. Predators that were not only smart but could hide and had evolved to their environments in colour laying in wait, stalking their victim until the precise moment to strike. Matthew having grown up in the Scottish city of Glasgow had never come across any of the three species that inhabited the UK but that was all about to change today.

At least he had hoped it would but after almost one hundred failed attempts to conjure the beast he was starting to believe the whispers that weaved the dark corners of the Slytherin common room. Whispers from the ignorant who used an ancient bigots opinions of blood purity to hide their hate. Yet with Salazar Slytherins natural affinity for snakes and his hatred of muggleborn wizards Matthew was beginning to wonder if it really was an ancient blood curse preventing him from his casting. Luckily the boy was growing to be one stubborn bastard and he had no interest in allowing some dead old fart to have such power over his life.

Holding his wand between the bridge of his index and middle finger he lightly rolled it up the bridge in a calming motion that made the cherry wood feel like an extension of his hand. Without a phone or computer to hand he had resorted to grabbing a book of reptiles in order to help aid visualisation of the creature he had only pictured mentally. Due to his new found status as a duellist of the Viridian Vipers he couldn't help but be drawn towards the family of snakes and on each of his attempts he had hoped he may summon a viper, particularly the white-lipped tree viper that had slithered its way deep into his consciousness. Only then lost in thought had he realised his mistake, intention was always key in magic and conjuring needed a set intention, a set image. Matthew couldn't simply summon forth a snake he had to envision it and summon it from his mind.

Flipping his wand from his fingers into his grasp he drew one sharp line seeing the spectrum of green scales wrapping themselves into form and once he could imagine it as clear as the book in front of him he spoke the incantation, "Serpensortia." Eyes closed he waited with baited breath expecting some kind of large backfire to blow up in his face yet moments passed with his eyes glued shut and in the silence there was nothing but a feint hiss. The boy had been so shocked upon opening his eyes to the creature that he lost his footing completely and stumbled backwards falling with a painful thud.

In any ordinary situation Matthew would have found himself readying the bruise paste for his injury, but gentle hisses had become vengeful and as he refocused on the room he noticed that the book had been launched at his summon in the commotion. Completely at a loss of control he desperately gripped his wand as the very real, very venomous snake began weaving itself towards him. Unlike the previous spell he had thus far found no reason to practice the vanishing spell given their wasn't a snake in sight to do so. Yet Matthew's magic had always been instinctive, intuitive. Drawing the unnecessarily complex wand movement particularly in comparison to its counterpart he practically screamed the incantation "Vipera Evanesca!" and watched as luminous scales cracked away into nothingness, the danger banishing with them.
