Chapter 3: Close Quarters
Ruckus hadn't expected the grindylows to be so entranced with simple rubber ducks—he hoped that students listened to him and kept calm. He didn't want any of them reaching their hands where the little buggers could catch hold. Grindylows were famous for their tight grip, and they wouldn't shy away from attempted drownings.
@Alyss Gilmour and @Kim Mirroz had landed in the water—at least the grindylows near their boat stayed preoccupied with the ducks. "Levioso!" The two soaked girls were lifted from the water with a quick movement from Ruckus's wand, and he guided them carefully back to their boat. "Aer Calidus!" A blast of hot air channeled toward them from Ruckus's wand; the wind tunnel would cause them to be warm and toasty.
Unfortunately, since Ruckus had not given clear directions, many students were, in fact, sticking their hands in the water where grindylows might choose to grab. A few things happened simultaneously as he was busy making sure the two aforementioned girls didn't catch pneumonia.
@Angie Dixon, @Jun Mayumi Mochizuki, and @Aodhan Shaw foolishly attempt to save the useless muggle toys from the terrifying creatures. @Colby Vidler merely tries to knock them away from her boat.

Aodhan receives help from @Novalie Moon and @Sanguinius Demarest, which might be overkill, but he successfully wrenches the green duckie from the grindylow and it is now in his possession. Jun is successful all by herself, and she is now in possession of a red duckie. Angie has more of a struggle because her grindylow chooses to grab her hand instead and try to pull her into the water, but grindylows are a bit weaker out of the water, and she is able to stay in the boat. The duckie, however, is lost to the lake. Colby hits a grindylow near her so hard, it leaves the blue boat alone entirely. All four of the grindylows shake their little fists before disappearing.
But things are not over for Angie. The young girl had committed the sin of littering. An observant and possibly environmentally conscious grindylow would spot the act, and hurl the ginger candy back at the girl. The angry little menace starts creating large waves near the red boats.

Angie, Jun, @Mamori Anezaki, and @Corvinus Schröder easily stay in their boat despite the waves from one measly grindylow. The other red boat has more of an issue. @Lucian Allum, a boy Ruckus clocked as possibly being half-giant due to his great stature, attempts to strike the grindylow, but the action stretches him too far outside the boat and he falls out. @Maisie Gemmell, distracted by trying to steer a boat that has no steering apparatus, follows the large boy into the depths.
In what is probably the most foolish choice of the entire night so far, @Camilla Carter makes a "pspspspspsps" noise and tries to attract the grindylows to her boat as if they're cuddly puppies. Four grindylows drop their ducks and head for the purple boat. They begin crawling up the sides, causing the boat to rock.

Surprisingly, Camilla, @Lev Makarov, and @Meyra Lancaster manage to stay in. But poor @Lemmy LaRue is taken by surprise and falls overboard.
Just as Ruckus is about to lose his mind with three students in the water and agitated grindylows everywhere, the group of boats turns a corner.
Hogwarts in all its glory can now be seen in the distance. Right on their magical cue, all the duckies light up causing a phantasm of color to light up the night. This spooks the grindylows—each one disappearing below the surface as quickly as they came.
Thank Merlin, Ruckus thinks to himself. Fighting off a legion of grindylows was doable for the old caretaker, but this was a much cleaner solution.
Ruckus turns toward the castle with a sweeping gesture, "There she is! Hogwarts! Your new home!"
Just outside the little circle of light emanating from the duckies, a few limb-like masses pick Lucian, Lemmy, and Maisie up out of the water and plop them safely back in their boats. Ruckus turns back around and notices the three shivering first-years and sends a few more blasts of the hot-air charm their way. He asks nothing of how they got out of the water.
The caretaker turns back toward the castle again, standing up in his boat with one foot on the bow. His practiced sea legs move easily without rocking his boat. He's in an particular mood—he's either talking to no one or everyone; it's unclear. His eyes have gone to a faraway place.
"I'm glad ye all survived that encounter. Grindylows aren't too bad, more mischief makers than anything. There are much bigger monsters at sea to be worried about. Once I found meself in the Bermuda Triangle of all places on a muggle ship. It's said there's a terrible sea serpent there that enjoys wrecking things. And of course, we found it—turns out it was a large kelpie. Ten times bigger than the Loch Ness one I reckon."
It's very difficult to tell if this story is true or not, and Ruckus isn't looking back at his captive audience to see if a group of eleven-year-olds are even interested in a tall tale to begin with. But the green boat begins to rock a bit, shaking its riders. They might start to get the feeling that something very large is right below them, but it's impossible to see through the glow of the duckies.
"And that kelpie picked our whole ship right up in the air. Not a single muggle aboard could even fathom what was happening—probably thought it was a wave or freak storm or something."
Suddenly, the green boat shoots into the air! Novalie, Sanguinius, Aodhan, and @Vera Caird are now approximately five feet above the water.
"I looked the thing in the eye. And it looked back. There was a fearsome connection between us. I knew it would stop at nothing til I was gone."
As if punctuating Ruckus's sentence, the green boat begins to tip, teetering back and forth on whatever strange thing is holding it up.

I WILL NO LONGER BE UPDATING THE BOAT LIST. If you wish to enter the thread, please pick whichever color you would like and you may sit with other new students who join. Do not roleplay sitting in the same boat as the students listed above.
OOC Notes!
- This thread is open to all first-year students in the 2024-2025 school year.
- This is an "open thread," so feel free to join whenever, even if the boats are already on the move (in which case, act like you've been there the whole time). I'll keep the list of boats above up to date so that you know which boats are open for you to join. Please note in your first post which boat you are joining!
- I will be posting in this thread every 2ish weeks to do a "mod post." If you'd like to perform a moderated action, please state the action clearly in your post. You may only perform spells if they are indexed in your trunk. And do not roleplay reactions, follow-up actions, or results to your moderated action until I have clearly stated whether you were successful or not. You get one action per chapter.
- My mod posts will also be guiding you through the story, so you may only describe seeing what I've laid out so far. For example, if only the first chapter has been posted, you cannot see the castle.
The moderation of this thread has concluded. You may continue to join the thread and RP seeing all the above happen, but your character will not have interacted directly with any magical creatures nor may they steal a duck.- All RP rules apply. You do not need to be “indexed” to participate in this thread, all are welcome! Word count minimum per post is 200 words of your own work, not including quotes, OOC chat, or other people's words.
- Always feel free to send me any owl or DM if you have any questions or concerns.

| ===== | ===== 𝓣 hroughout all of the disarray the Grindylows were content in unleashing upon the bewildered first years, Sanguinius blinked at the red-haired girl, whose unruly vermillion coils had now turned into an almost identical shade of sun-kissed blonde like his, and for a split second - the sickness was replaced with a twisted sense of fascination with a bale of mild shock. Something had unexpected just occurred as she saddled herself up to lend him a helping hand, and he was, if not, struck with a childish spur of curiosity. It was as if the very essence of her identity had shifted before his eyes, and he was momentarily drawn to the peculiar piece of transformation of her hair, the ill-mannered urge to point it out nipped at his fingers like the frostbite on the rare frigid wintry days that would sweep through the Demarest's region of coastal Italy. It began as a gentle tingling, a warning signal sent by the body that something was amiss. A biting chill, that crept through the layers of warmth that was supposed to be set in the runes that littered nearly every hidden orifice in Crown's Peak, to settle deep within the bones like thick golden amber in a bee's nest. As he grew up, he would trace his fingers over the trenchant lines, feeling a sense of comfort in their presence, and relishing in the belief that they kept the cold and other horrors at bay. A silly whim that had been curated by the imagination, now that he recalled it. " I, yes, that's correct. " He jerkily nodded. With Novalie's combined strength adding to his, Sanguinius strained against the resistance of the murky waters, finally managing to wrestle Aodhan back into the safety of the boat of where he was very much not going to be made Grindylow lunch. Gasping for breath, he heaved him from the edge, the cool splash of the lake accentuating the urgency that was strewn with his actions. His heart raced, the sensation of adrenaline-- nearly addictive in it's wake-- coursing through his veins as he pulled him away, ensuring the other boy was secure from the treacherous grasp of the swirling depths. Sanguinius realized right away that he had to tip his head downwards to look at the boy. Aodhan Shaw was a person of small stature, his frame even more slight and delicate with lanky limbs to top it all off, he awfully reminded him of the porcelain dinnerware that were used as decorative ornaments in the Red Keep's parlor room. He knew his family were made up of tall individuals, as he himself was-- enhanced by the magic that was embedded deep in their crux, he did not know. Yet he couldn’t help but feel amused by the fact that most children his age were much shorter than him. It made a small chuckle slip past his lips, the first since he had boarded the train. But the crack in his demeanor swiftly reverted back to the despotic whip of harshness that stood in stark constrast to his voice. His inflection was not gentle like the dew that clung to morning grass nor was it playful like the rustle of leaves in a soft autumnal breeze, his inflection was a smooth, satinique and rich cadence— like the deep, resonant tones of a cello. Each syllable that came out of mouth next was carefully crafted to be every bit of what Sanguinius was raised to be. " What were you thinking? Next time you plan to take a green duck, of all things, in the middle of a lagoon with inhabitants lurking below in waiting, you should take a big reminder to be more mindful of your surroundings. " Sanguinius's intense gaze pierced through the dim light of the lanterns, searching for a flicker of understanding or remorse on the boy's face. When the silence stretched, taut with tension, as the recipient of his reprimand could not reply back, his lips curled downwards. He truly felt like he was scolding a toddler. " While I may not know of the experiences you've had, the world you're in now is unpredictable. The carelessness you displayed could easily lead to trouble you aren’t prepared for. Lady Luck seems to be on our side since that Grindylow didn't decide to call for backup, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to save you without a Revulsion Jinx in hand. " A spell that all students don't learn in their first year, Sanguinius scoffed in derision, Not unless they were looking for trouble on purpose. He loathed the insidious sensation of being rendered useless, a feeling that gnawed at his pride and dignity, it made him feel like an ensnared animal whose options were only to succumb to its fate. He wanted-- needed to have suitable armor to shield himself. " And what exactly is a... waffle and a tee - vee? A beauty product? " He sarcastically added, turning to face Novalie, unsure of what he had heard in the midst of hands clamoring to grab and shouts of unbridled delirium. The terms were unfamiliar and oddly foreign on his tongue, as if he were attempting to articulate a sentence in a language he had never honed before. Should he feel offended? " Were you ever diagnosed of having Wrackspurts - " As if his earlier words came back to bite him, he felt his feet swaying along to the uneven rhythm of the boat, causing him to lean against the fringes once more. Vision swimming right before his eyes, the sudden change of gravity prompted for the spew to wake up from its hibernation. He was never a fan of heights, and the sight of the colorful luminescence of the toy ducks getting farther and farther away only cemented it. Sanguinius felt as if the gods were playing a cruel joke on him, seeing that the castle of Hogwarts could now be seen from his point of view - but he was going to make sure he would live after this, and when, he would be making a formal complaint to the headmaster about the caretaker's job dismissal. Did he just hear him talking about a large kelpie? Oh, hell no. " I am going to kill everybody on this ship when it comes down to it! Do you hear me, Ruckus?! I AM GOING TO DO IT! IF MY DEATH IS IMMINENT, I WILL MAKE SURE YOUR DOWNFALL WILL BE ON MY HANDS! " He yelled, rather dramatically, with an animalistic growl escaping his throat. |

Right after she play-threatened Ice Lord, everything kind of slipped out of control. First, the outburst of the sickly kid who was in the boat with them, which was kinda rude if you asked her. She had understanding for seasickness and frustration, but not an explosion like that without preamble; her parents raised her better than that. Then the fresh addition to the Pink Panther filmography with those grindy-somethings in main role and Ice Lord filling in for Inspector Clouseau with his almost fumble.
She was going to help her crewmates pull the boy back into the boat, he didn't look that heavy, but by the time she finally grasped what was happening, they were out of danger. The grindy-buggers were swimming away into the depths before she managed to pay them much mind (catalogued away for research once again).
What did immediately draw her attention was the berating Waffles, as Vanilla Ice nicknamed him, was unleashing on Ice Lord. And that just wouldn't fly. Not after the boy mostly just tried to save a part of what probably took Ruckus a solid bit to set up and almost got drenched in the process.
"Cool it, Waffles! He didn't know."
Her tone was curt, very different from anything she'd let out of her mouth until then. She didn't stand up to drive her point further, just seeing Waffles standing next to Ice Lord made it clear he'd be towering over her anyway, but instead opted for very firmly tugging on his arm to make him sit down on the bench again.
The Wrackspurts comment didn't really make sense to her. Even though, within the context and the biting sarcasm imbued in every word, she didn't need much explanation.
"You might need to sweeten up if you want to keep being 'Waffles' to us, Sir Posh," she mumbled towards him, back to somewhat playful. Just to be sure she directed a look to Ice Lord and Vanilla Ice as if to check that they're okay.
Ruckus's seaman's tale would be an exciting experience for her were Hogwarts suddenly not just... there.
And going down?
Her hand was still pulling on Waffles' arm when the sudden rumbling shot them up into the air and the blonde boy started screaming his hysterics. She kept a firm grip on him and instinctively locked one of her feet under her seat. She threw her left arm into the space between all of them in the boat for anyone to grab.
Her stomach did one of those exhilirating swishes like when a car goes very fast over a tiny hill.

Left to right, there were so many grindylows appearing from out of the water and towards each boat. Little did anyone know was how good her sense of smell was. So far, so good. No grindylows were heading towards their boat any time soon. Though, Colby would not be shocked if one just appeared out of nowhere at any time.
Her green eyes looked around and saw how some of the students were being saved by the Caretaker himself and some had tried to keep themselves safe but either fell over into the water or was holding on for dear life. A student from the red boat looked like they were trying to punch a grindylow, but completely missed. This only made her wake up from focusing on those around her to what was happening right in front of her. Her nose twitched at the smell of grindylows and saw one coming her way. Colby's heart was beating exceptionally fast, but she had a sense of knowing what to do. She took a deep breath, clenched her fist, and gave a heaping blow to the grindylow that was coming after her.
It seemed as though it was a success as the grindylows left the blue boat alone and shook their fists while swimming away. Colby let out a great big sigh of relief while looking down at her feet. There, she could see six more feet. Only then did she remember that there were three other people on the boat with her. "You guys are so useless," she shouted angrily at them. They well deserved the anger seeing as it was Colby who 'saved' them from the horrid creature of the night.
She rolled her eyes and leaned back on the boat looking forward as the boats turned a corner. Instantly, the boats began to radiate in the color given. Her boat, the blue boat, was glowing the most beautiful hue of blue. At this time, all the grindylows began to back away and hide beneath the water once more. The thought of grindylows was now behind her as she stared at the most extravagant and beautiful castle before them. That was going to be her home for seven whole years. Even in that amount of time, she would not be able to see so much of the castle. There were apparently secret passageways and entrances, and countless number of rooms. Colby wondered what would be her hobby once she entered through those doors. Would she go on routine adventures around the castle? Would she focus entirely on her schoolwork? What kind of person will she be or become? The thought of all these questions, made her smile; her face blue from the light of the boat.
It seemed that they were out of the woods. Perhaps from here on out, it was a calm and steady ride towards the castle. Little would Colby know that more may be brewing beneath the water's surface, ready to greet some or all of the first years. Instead, boredom was greeting her as the Caretaker began to share a story about a Kelpie. Fun.

Novalie clapped her hands together with a wide grin as they successfully pulled Ice Lord back into the boat. But instead of laughter and cheers, Waffles began.. scolding him?
Novalie tilted her head slightly, her big eyes fixed on the blonde boy, confused by his sudden outburst.
"For someone from the slums, you sure talk a lot like a grandpa.", she remarked bluntly, not intending to insult him at all, just speaking her mind.
His words had triggered a memory of the grumpy elderly folks from back home, the ones who would complain whenever her and her friends’ football hit their windows. Sometimes, they'd even throw shoes at the kids and she’d laugh as they all fled, pretending to escape from monsters. A grin spread across the Ravenclaws' face as she recalled how much fun those moments had been.
But before anything more could happen, the boat started to wobble again, this time more violently. And then, without any warning, they were shot high into the air. Novalie’s eyes widened in surprise at first, but as the boat swayed dangerously, as if about to topple, her surprise quickly turned into exhilaration. A high-pitched, delighted scream escaped her throat, her excitement reaching its peak. Her hair, now such a pale blonde, practically glowed in the moonlight, while her eyes sparkled in a light, shimmering green. Even her skin, upon close inspection, seemed to glisten with tiny flecks of silver, making her almost resemble a little disco ball.
"Oh my god, oh my god!", she exclaimed, entirely thrilled by what was happening and blissfully unaware that this wasn’t just harmless fun. She completely tuned out Waffles’ screaming, Ice Lord's comment and Chocolate Sprinkles' demand to hold onto her. Oblivious to the danger and the fact that it probably wasn’t Ruckus behind this chaos,, Novalie threw her arms into the air as if she were on a roller coaster, eagerly anticipating the drop!
"Wohoo!", she yelled, fully immersed in the moment, making no effort to hold onto anything.
Glancing around, she noticed that the others were gripping onto each other for dear life.
Huh? Why were they holding on? That’s not how you enjoy the fun!
Without missing a beat, the girl reached for the nearest hand - in that case Ice Lord’s - and attempted to raise it high into the air along with hers, her grin widening playfully.
"Here, you have to do it like this!", she said with a laugh, looking back at the others, hoping they’d follow her lead in embracing the thrill.

| •••••••• | •••••••• 𝖘 anguinius was an accomplished expert in every aspect of the activity that was called swimming, thank you very much. Growing up in a villa that was situated right above the aggressive swells of the currents would have given everyone the inimitable ability to stay afloat instead of sinking right away like a rock. And he would have defended himself, rightfully so, about the misconception that-- Ice Lord, as he was fondly called, seemed intent on labeling him if he hadn't been so utterly consumed by the struggle to survive. Using Lemon Chocolate Sprinkle as an anchor in this untimely predicament, his other arm came to wrap around her waist, his fingers pressing in just enough to remain a steadfast grip into her side. He gritted his teeth together in a vague attempt to hold back a string of curses - whatever was causing the boat to teeter back and forth was a behemoth of a colossus. " Might as well put Sir Posh instead of my name on my gravestone, " Sanguinius gasped back to Vera with his voice lowering down to a reasonable volume, her hickory pigmented tresses brushing up against the bottom of his chin - creating a slight tickling sensation. " I do hope you hold on tight. I’d hate to add ‘rescuer of wayward damsels’ to your list of achievements if it means I’m gonna end up as fish food. " He rummaged through his brain, for the bits and pieces he had skimmed over about the occupants of the Great Lake on the Hogwarts Express. Magical beings that were almost as old as the castle of Hogwarts itself, tangible and elusive, had resided beneath the rippling surface, their shimmering forms often weaving in and out of the seaweed shrouded chasm - were the only details he could scrounge up. As his hands shook from the anxiety of being elevated high in the air, the scent of damp foliage and the crisp freshwater smell filled his nose, mingling with the salt of his own sweat. Desperation for the boat to come down, at least, clawed at his chest. " Hey, Metamorphagus! If you could kindly channel your inner bird or something along those lines, and fly us to safety, that would be greatly appreciated. But, as you know. No pressure! " Sanguinius shouted over his shoulder, a nervous edge to his voice, gobsmacked at the fact that she wasn't making an effort to keep herself rooted. He rolled his eyes and shook his head to himself. " Since you want to shine, the moment would be now. " In a sense, the four first years looked a little ridiculous with the way they were all clinging onto each other, Lord Ice and the Metamorphagi had formed some sort of an absurd makeshift chain, Sanguinius clocked after a few seconds, while the boat continued to swing from the backlash. He, himself, hoped that the boat wouldn't topple right over and land on the water with them upside down. |

There was always something amusing about those high-and-mighty completely losing their cool in unexpected situations.
As long as they weren't turning your poor ribs into literal bonemeal, that is.
"Watch the paws, Waffles. I'm ticklish," she hissed at the boy as a pained giggle squeezed by her teeth. She didn't let go or move away, though. In that moment it felt like a cop-out if she did. "I always hold on tight, but it might be a good idea to hold onto something besides me too."
Maybe matching his snark would be worth something at least.
While she wasn't scared of heights or the murky depths somewhere below them, the predicament was. unsettling to say the least. And Vanilla Ice wasn't helping with her arms up in the air. The errant memory of one of the Madagascar movies had her clamping her mouth shut as not to ask the now basically peroxide blonde if she liked lemurs.
Instead she leaned to peer over the edge of the boat, trying to see what caused them to be this high up, without jostling already shaken Waffles too much.
"So," she started to nobody in particular, conceding to another random idea popping into her brain as her field of vision slowly spread to include the faint glow of the duckies under them, "you think it's like in cartoons where if you look down, you fall?"
To be fair, she hasn't looked down completely yet, so there was nothing to worry about, right?

No spells? Not too surprising, but nothing to be ashamed of. The tone in her voice seemed that of someone with potential to be a leader, but not yet fully open. What was this girl capable of? Was she really driven enough and strong enough to be helpful in the endeavor they were about to face? Hard to say, but Lucian had some thoughts and curiosity on the girl as she took hold of an oar. She didn't seem afraid of Lucian, and if anything Lucian found that rather reassuring. Yet, he wasn't much of one to follow orders by someone who didn't actually have authority. He still agreed without saying a word, standing slightly up causing a bit of disbalance in the boat. It rocked a little, but Lucian showed no change in facial expression. He had to take a bit of action as needed. Yet the grindylows in question were rather annoying. Yet Lucian never really had experience fighting in a boat. His overwhelming size and an attempt to take a swing was more overwhelming than he anticipated. He tried to take a swing, but he swiftly lost his balance overreaching and falling overboard. Falling into the freezing lake, he fell deeper into the water as the freezing cold make it rather hard to concentrate on what was occurring. Yet... it was also somehow calming. No other students or even Ruckus could be heard.
Above the water was chaos, and below was peace. Yet within that dark peace was the unknown, and above the water was the known. Neither was comforting, and Lucian almost accepted the cold water as if felt a bit relieving to the aching stress in his body. Always pushing himself to be better, he almost wished he could breathe water and be capable to stay underwater for a bit longer. The shivering cold was making him feel a bit numb, but before he could ever lose feeling in his body he was swiftly grabbed by something. What, he couldn't tell. It was too dark, too murky and impossible to see. The only thing that could be seen was the sparkling colors of ducks floating atop the water. As Lucian flew through the air, he was safely placed back into his boat. A couples coughs and deep wheezes escaped the boy. Usually due to his giant nature, his endurance and capability to hold his breath underwater was really good. He just hadn't held his breath well before and lost a bit in himself due to being bewildered by whatever grabbed him. Looking at the dark wood of his boat, he could feel the hypothermia quickly taking his body. Luckily a hot gust of wind followed after being dropped, and Lucian's clothes and body felt better.
He stood up, readjusting his clothes a bit and looking around to understand what was occurring. He looked over towards his other boatmate(s). "You alright?" he asked concerningly in a rather low toned voice. Lucian was fine, he always was. There was no time for concern of himself. His giant nature is what allows him to endure and survive. He knew this, and always relied and thanked his grandparents for such a gift. It was other people he needed to dedicate more time towards. As such, he looked towards the other boats, with only a few words capable of escaping his voice as Ruckus told his story and the sight of Hogwarts was in view and the green vessel shot towards the sky: "Fersailedailr." -Fascinating - Giant
Action: Keeping an eye towards @Maisie Gemmell to provide a helping hand. This may include protection from grindylows or preventing them from falling out the boat.

First-Year Entrance
This was not going to go well. That probably should have been evident from the moment the grindylows attacked, but someone Maisie, even without a single spell to her memory, had felt confident that they could do it—she and the tall boy.
But it was not to be so.
What she had thought was an oar was nothing but the side of the boat, cloaked in the night light. "Darn it," she let out as her hand grazed the wood. She looked up at the boy, who was still silent and stoic, but caused no fuss. No, he was capable, just as she imagined he would be. He swung into action—literally, as she felt the boat topple and they both fell overboard.
Her breathing quickened. Her body shivered. And all around, everything was dark, possibly even darker than it had been above the water. Blinking under the waves, she kept a sharp eye for more grindylows in the dark waters, as her arms and legs started kicking, pushing her back up towards the surface.
But before she could even swim up that far, she felt something—an arm? a claw?—pull up on her robes and swiftly, she found herself breathing again, albeit a bit more rapidly. Her own coughs were meet equally by the boy across the boat. She pulled her cloak tighter around her, but this only made her shiver all the more.
"You alright?" he'd asked.
Quickly, she looked down at her limbs before looking back up at him. "I think so," she said, "Are you?" And then a glance towards the boat. It seemed to faired far better than they had done in that kerfuffle. "I'm sorry—I tried—it just happened so fast." Not that it mattered. Steering a magical boat was probably a stupid idea.
She let her breaths fill her up. Her eyelids fluttered shut and open again.
It was only the boy's strange word, still unrecognizable, but soft as a whisper that stirred her. Looking up, she caught her very first glance of the castle. And it was incredible. Nothing her parents could have said would have done it justice. She imagined the others in her boat were just as enamored.
And it was just in that romantic moment that the green boat sailed up into the sky. That—not the castle—might have been what stirred her companion. And it certainly stirred her. "Okay, new plan," she suggested, without fully thinking it through, "we'll each take a side." She scooted over to the left side of the boat, with absolutely no idea how she'd defend her side. Unlike him, she was fairly certainly she wouldn't be able to swing at anything that came for them.
Looking over at her boatmates, she added, "And if we go over again, we look for each other—extend a hand." Biting her lip, she hoped that wouldn't be necessary.
Action: Keeping a sharp eye for anything that seems off and manning one side of the boat to protect herself and @Lucian Allum.
